Chapters 24-26

Summary: Industrialization & Imperialism

At the same time as the Enlightenment and French Revolution, there was another important change happening in Europe called the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution was likely the second most important event in the history of the world. This development of technology and factories helped Europe become the most powerful region in the world because countries could use machines to manufacture goods faster and cheaper. Now able to manufacture goods faster, many businesses became very profitable, and the quality of life improved for many Europeans.

After Europe became more powerful economically, many European countries also used their technology to control foreign lands like Africa and India. This process of European nations building empires is known as imperialism. Imperialism made the European countries even richer and more powerful but disrupted life in Africa and Asia. Two countries, China and Japan, attempted to stop Europeans from taking them over. China was unsuccessful and declined, while Japan was able to industrialize and advance like Europe.
