Dear Friends in Christ,

Isaiah invites us to, "...walk in the light of The Lord." in the very first week of the Advent scriptures that kicks off this series of reflections for our Lectionary Based Small Christian Communities. This edition continues through the Christmas Season and concludes with the eighth weekend of Ordinary Time.

Even after the great light of Christ has come to us at Christmas and guided us at Epiphany, Isaiah and Matthew's Gospel remind us that, "a people who walk in darkness shall see a great light!"

Look for other powerful references to light in these readings and open yourselves up to the growing illumination of your shared discussion, prayer, reflection and fellowship that this resource encourages.

Please always remember what Jesus proclaims towards the end of this guide, "You are the light of the world!" and what we hear early in Advent, that "The Lord will come unexpectedly...” in your discussion.

God bless you in your shared faith.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Terry Keehan

The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. In days to come, the mountain of the LORD’s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it.Many peoples shall come and say,“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob;that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.”For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples;they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning hooks;nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!

Brothers and sisters, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near.Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us live honourably as in the day, not in reviling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy.Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

GOSPELMatthew 24:37-44A reading from the holy Gospelaccording to Matthew

Jesus spoke to his disciples:“As the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man.Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left.Keep awake, therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.”

FAITH SHARING QUESTIONS

1. In the course of your daily life, what does it mean to “walk in the light of the Lord”?

2. Considering the current state of the world, what would have to happen to make Isaiah’s prophecy in the first reading a reality?

3. What does it take to live the “wakeful” life that Paul describes?

4. How strongly do you feel that you are prepared for the “end times”?

5. What spiritual practices do you find helpful in “staying awake” spiritually?

SOCIAL JUSTICE QUESTION

Life’s “busyness” and distractions make it difficult to stay alert and ready at a moment’s notice, especially the lives of those less fortunate as they are burdened to continually meet their basic needs of food, clothing and shelter. What justice issue are you being called to be “awakened” to confront?

FIRST READINGIsaiah 11:1-10A reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah

On that day: A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the LORD shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.His delight shall be in the fear of the LORD.He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins. The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder’s den. They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.

On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.

SECOND READINGRomans 15:4-9A reading from the Letter of Saint Paulto the Romans

Brothers and sisters:Whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised on behalf of the truth of God and in order that he might confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written: “Therefore I will confess you among the Gentiles, and sing praises to your name.”

GOSPELMatthew 3:1-12A reading from the holy Gospelaccording to Matthew

In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near. This is the one of whom the Prophet Isaiah spoke when he said, “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.’”Now John wore clothing of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, John said to them, “You brood of vipers!Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?Bear fruit worthy of repentance.Do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham.Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.I baptize you with water for repentance, but the one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals.

He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

FAITH SHARING QUESTIONS

1. “The wolf shall live with the lamb”, “the leopard shall lie down with the kid”: what would it take to achieve this in your family, your neighborhood, your church?

2. Paul teaches that the Scriptures are the fertile ground for hope. Have you found that to be true? If yes, in what way? If no, why not?

3. Has there been someone who has been a ‘voice crying out in the wilderness’ for you? What message did that ‘voice’ impart to you?

4. What are some of the concrete ways that you/we can “Prepare the way of the Lord” today?

5. The theme of Hope runs through all three readings. What are the signs of hope in each of the readings? Why is hope such an important virtue in the life of a Christian?

SOCIAL JUSTICE QUESTION

How do you tap into Jesus’ compassionate love to bring about justice in an unjust world?

FIRST READINGIsaiah 35:1-6a, 10A reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah

The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the LORD, the majesty of our God.Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees.Say to those who are of a fearful heart, “Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God.He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come to save you.”Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.And the ransomed of the Lord will return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they will shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

SECOND READINGJames 5:7-10A reading from the Letter of Saint James

Be patient, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You also must be patient.Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near.Brothers and sisters, do not grumble against one another, so that you may not be judged.See, the Judge is standing at the doors! As an example of suffering and patience, brothers and sisters, take the Prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

GOSPELMatthew 11:2-11A reading from the holy Gospelaccording to Matthew

When John the Baptist heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples who said to Jesus, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?”Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. And blessed is anyone who takes no offence at me.”As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out to the desert to look at?A reed swayed by the wind? What then did you go out to see?Someone dressed in soft robes?Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces. What then did you go out to see? A Prophet?Yes, I tell you, and more than a Prophet. This is the one about whom it is written, “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”

FIRST READINGIsaiah 7:10-14A reading from thebook of the Prophet Isaiah

The LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying,“Ask for a sign of the LORD your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven.”But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the LORD to the test.”Then Isaiah said: “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary the people, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign.Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel.”

SECOND READINGRomans 1:1-7A reading from the Letter of Saint Paulto the Romans

From Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle set apart for the Gospel of God, which God promised beforehand through his Prophets in the holy Scriptures: the Gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord.Through Christ we have received grace and apostleship, to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of his name, including yourselves who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. To all God’s beloved in Rome, who are called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

GOSPELMatthew 1:18-24A reading from the holy Gospelaccording to Matthew

The birth of Jesus the Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the Prophet: “Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means “God is with us.”When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the Angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife.

FAITH SHARING QUESTIONS

1. Have there been times when you were afraid to ask God for something? If so, what might have been the reason?

2. When have you in times of trial or stress received a sign of God’s love?

4. What gifts/talents have you been given by God that you use to proclaim the Gospel?

5. Discuss a time when “doing the right thing” caused you embarrassment or discomfort. What enabled you to do it anyway?

6. In what ways have you experienced the “Coming of the Lord” this Advent? Are you ready to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas?

SOCIAL JUSTICE QUESTION

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness – on them light has shone. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

The Epiphany of the Lord • January 8, 2017

GOSPELMatthew 2:1-12A reading from the holy Gospelaccording to Matthew

In the time of King Herod after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men came from the east came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising and have come to pay him homage.”When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for it has been written by the Prophet: ‘And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah; are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’”Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I too may also go and pay him homage.”When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy.

On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

The LORD said to me: “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.”And now the LORD says who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honoured in the sight of the LORD, for my God has become my strength. He says, “It is too small a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”

GOSPELJohn 1:29-34A reading from the holy Gospelaccording to John

John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me come a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.”And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and remain on him.I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

FAITH SHARING QUESTIONS

1. The Lord called the Israelites to be a light to the nations. What does the Lord expect of our community of faith? In what ways are we living up to that expectation? In what ways could we improve?

2. How and when do you most often recognize that ‘God has become my strength’?

3. Paul reminds the Corinthians that they are a ‘sanctified community’. What are the characteristics that a ‘sanctified community’ should possess?

4. Do you think that it is harder to be a disciple of the Lord today than it was in the time of Paul’s Corinth? Why/ why not?

5. In the Gospel John acknowledges that ‘I did not know him’ referring to Jesus. Can you remember a time in your own life when you could have said the same?

6. How would you respond if someone asked if you have a personal relationship with Jesus? How would you explain your answer?

SOCIAL JUSTICE QUESTION

John the Baptist challenges us to be a witness of the power of the Holy Spirit. In terms of justice, what does this look like? What is the cost of this witnessing?

3 rd Sunday in Ordinary Time January 22, 2017

First ReadingIsaiah 9.1-4A reading from thebook of the Prophet Isaiah

There will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time the Lord brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness - on them light has shone. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.

Second Reading1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17-18A reading from the first Letter of Saint Paulto the Corinthians

I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. What I mean is that each of you says, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.”Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you?Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the Gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. For the message about the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

GospelMatthew 4:12-23A reading from the holy Gospelaccording to Matthew

When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through the Prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles - the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.”From that time Jesus began to proclaim “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”As he was walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of people.”Immediately they left their nets and followed him.As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them.Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.

Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.

3. Have you been part of a faith community that struggled with divisions? Were they healed? If so, how? If not, what prevented the healing?

4. In accepting the invitation to follow Christ what have you left behind? What do you still need to leave behind?

5. What do you think it might have been about the message of Jesus that inspired the disciples to follow Him? What is it about the message of Jesus that inspires you to follow Him?

SOCIAL JUSTICE QUESTION

First ReadingZephaniah 2.3, 3.12-13A reading from thebook of the Prophet Zephaniah

Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land, who do his commands; seek righteousness, seek humility; perhaps you may be hidden on the day of the Lord’s wrath. For I will leave in the midst of you a people humble and lowly. They shall seek refuge in the name of the Lord – the remnant of Israel; they shall do no wrong and utter no lies, nor shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouths. Then they will pasture and lie down, and no one shall make them afraid.

Second Reading1 Corinthians 1.26-31A reading from the first Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians

Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God.God is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in order that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

GospelMatthew 5.1-12A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.Blessed are those who are persecuted for Righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the Prophets who were before you.”

Thus says the LORD: Is this not the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not hide yourself from your own kin? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindication shall go before you, the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am!If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil, if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday.

Second Reading1 Corinthians 2:1-5A reading from the firstLetter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians

When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling,My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.

Jesus said to his disciples: “You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but it is thrown out and trampled under foot. You are the light of the world.A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before human beings, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”

If you choose, you can keep the commandments, and they will save you.If you trust in God, you too shall live, and to act faithfully is a matter of your own choice. The Lord has placed before you fire and water; stretch forth your hand for whichever you choose. Before each person are life and death, good and evil and whichever one chooses, that shall be given. For great is the wisdom of the Lord; he is mighty in power and sees everything; his eyes are on those who fear him, and he knows every human action. He has not commanded anyone to be wicked, and has not given anyone permission to sin.

Second Reading1 Corinthians 2:6-10A reading from the first Letter of Saint Paulto the Corinthians

Brothers and sisters:Among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish. But we speak God’s wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory.None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. As it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him.”These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.

GospelMatthew 5:17-37A reading from the holy Gospelaccording to Matthew

Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not murder’; and ‘whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.’But I say to you that the one who is angry with their brother or sister, will be liable to judgement; and whoever insults their brother or sister, will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to the hell of fire.So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift.

Come to terms quickly with your accuser while the two of you are on the way to court, or your acccuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison.Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell.It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce’..But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.Again you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.’But I say to you: Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.

GospelMatthew 6:24-34A reading from the holy Gospelaccording to Matthew

Jesus taught his disciples, saying, “No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear.Is not life more than food; and the body more than clothing?Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to their span of life? And why do you worry about clothing?Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin. yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you – you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own.Today’s trouble is enough for today.”

FAITH SHARING QUESTIONS

1. In times of distress and trial how have you been reminded that God will not abandon you?

2. Why do you think that some are not able to accept that God will not abandon them? How strong is your personal belief that God will not abandon you?

3. What defines a ‘trusting steward’? How do you see yourself in this regard?

5. What do you worry about? How does worrying diminish faith or stunt the growth of faith?
