Music and movement help children to develop sociallyMusic creates joyMusic, singing and movement are great ways of working with children. Singing and music create joy and make children want to move their bodies, and as children’s musical learn-ing is linked with movement, rhythmics are an obvious tool that should be used. Musi-cal forms of play stimulate children’s senses, ideas, language, imagination and their social and emotional developments. Children can develop and reinforce their social experiences through music and movement if they’re giventhe opportunity to do so in secure surroundings at preschool together with children and adults that they know. This is why this rhythmics material is one of many tools provided by Free of Bullying.Tolerance, respect, care and courage are the four basic values in Free of Bullying, and all four are included in the rhythmics exercises. Many of the activities involve trust and games that require cooperation.

If not, you can just sing along to the CD. A couple of the very simple songs can be performed without accompaniment at all.

How to get started:

• Hold a rhythmics session every week

• Ask 12-15 children to participate

• Make your rhythmics sessions 40-45 min-utes long (or adapt the time to suit your group of children)

• The adults should familiarise themselves with every song and activity in advance so that everything flows smoothly

• The adults should set a

good example: if you sing

along, the children will as

well

• Rhythmics activities should take place in a location which is quiet and where there’s plenty of space

Use the music on an everyday basisThis material has been developed for pre-school children, but it can be used in crèches and early primary school as well. The music is suitable for the individual activities and games. The songs

can also be used independently with other games and activities taking place within the preschool. Get the children to play the CD themselves and dance, sing and play to it. The songs can also be used for performances in front of other preschools, or in front of

parents at events. Sheet music is provided, with melo-dy lines and chords to the songs, in case you’d like to play along.

• You could involve some of the discussion boards between games

• Finish off your rhythmics session with a massage or relaxation (page 20)

When the children have played the games a few times, they’re sure to have ideas on how to extend the game. When the children create a new activity to go with a song, they feel a sense of “ownership” of the material, so engaging and motivating them.

Page 7:   · Web viewEvery time the word “stop” is sung, they stop and make the stop sign with their hands. When there’s a pause in the music, they all freeze. When there’s a pause

Structure of the gamesEach and every game in the booklet describes the structure of the song. A means “verse”.B means “chorus”. If you see AAB, for exam-ple, this means that the song is made up of two verses and a chorus. The same letters are used in the sections in the sheet music. The move-ments for each section are described in the descriptions of each game.

An alternative game to the track is described for every game, along with a detailed de-scription of the game and a list of any props needed.

There are eight different songs and games in total. The last three pieces of music are in-strumentals devised for the Free of Bullying massage programme, The person you touch, you do not bully.

By Anders Bøgelund, composer and music teacher.

BAMSEVEN [BUDDY BEAR] - game

Form:[A|A|B|A|A|B|A|A]

Materials:MaracasBuddy Bear

Preparation:The children all have maracas and sit in a circle.

Game:To sing along with the song and shake their maracas to the melody/solo - 16 beats. The maracas represent Buddy Bear. A child hides his (her) maraca somewhere on his body. It could be on his head, under his shirt or under his trousers.

A: “Bamseven…”. While the verse is sung, the children hold out their arms in a questioning manner.

A: “Bamseven…” The children look out for Buddy Bear, holding their hands up to their foreheads. Eventually the maraca is found and the song continues with the B section.

B: “Instrumental solo” Everybody plays during the instrumental. Eventually, someone finds a new place on their body where they can hide the maraca.

A, A and B: Same as above.

A, A: Everybody joins in with the verses with their maracas.

Alternative:The children sit with their eyes closed in a circle, with their hands behind their backs. One child walks around behind the group with Buddy Bear. The child places Buddy Bear in the hands of one of the other children. They all keep their hands behind their backs. They all sing while somebody is picked to guess who has Buddy Bear behind their back.

If older children are playing this game, Buddy Bear can be passed from hand to hand behind their backs while they’re singing the song. When the person whose turn it is says “STOP!”, the carer or a child who’s been picked and is standing with his back to the others has to guess who has Buddy Bear.

Form:[intro|A|A|A|A|solo|A|outro]

Materials:Ball

Preparation:The children sit in pairs facing each other, three metres apart and with their legs spread. Each pair has a ball.

Game:Intro, A, A: As it says in the verse the children sing, they roll the ball to one another.

A, A: They all stand up, and then they throw the ball to one another.

Solo, A, outro: The ball is put away and the children dance with their partners.

TANGLOPPEN TAGE [SANDHOPPER TAGE] – game

Form:[A|B|A|B|A|B|solo|A|B]

Materials:Stones, chestnuts, Lego bricks or pasta spirals (alternative).

Preparation:Practice the rhythm to be slapped on your legs and clapped with your hands.

Game:A, B x 3: “Tangloppen Tage kom…” Everybody stands in a circle and first slaps their legs and then claps their hands. This rhythm is repeated while the song about poor Tage is sung. During the interlude between verses, the children swap places in the circle so that they end up in a different place and standing next to new friends.

Solo: All the children kneel down and play the coolest air guitar solo.

A and B: Repeat the song with rhythm.

Alternative:Swapping game (based on an idea by Lotte Kærså): The children kneel close together in a circle – shoulder to shoulder. They all have a chestnut or similar (pasta spirals, Lego bricks, stones) in each hand. Instead of clapping the rhythm, they swap their chestnuts with the child on their right. They then sit up and take the two chestnuts in front of them. This swapping game has to take place at the same rhythm as the one the children were clapping.

Instead of using chestnuts and suchlike, the children could pass Buddy Bear all the way round the circle.

TROLDEFEST [TROLL PARTY] - game

Form:[A|A|B|A|B|B|A|B]

Materials:Troll tails (string)Paper ballsBin (wastebasket)

Preparation:Tie a string around each child’s tummy so that it ends up as a tail behind them. If you like, you can make tails using elastic bands with tails attached.

Before starting the game, each child crumples a piece of paper into a ball and throws it on the floor.

Game:Trolls can sometimes be naughtier than anyone! We’re going to look like little rogues here and go to a troll party being held by the witches in the forest. Everybody wears a little troll tail that people can grab hold of when they’re dancing.

Everybody curls up on the floor and goes to sleep, not forgetting to snore loudly like a real troll!

A: “Da klokken slog 12…” All the trolls wake up. They look around and stand up. They go looking round the forest and are curious, and they look very cheeky.

A: “Én efter én…” Everyone picks up their paper ball from the ground and goes over to the bin.

B: “Heksespyt og…” They drop their paper balls in the bin, and they all use a big spoon to show how they’re stirring the cauldron.

A: “Da klokken…” The children form a circle in which they all hold onto the troll tail of the person in front of them.

B x 2: “La la la…” All the trolls dance round in the circle and sing in the troll choir.

A: “Da klokken…” The circle breaks up, and the trolls all walk a long way “home” to lie down and sleep.

B: “La la la…” They all sing sleepily with the troll choir and then lie down to sleep.

JEG SIGER STOP [I SAY STOP] - game

Form:[A|B|A|B|solo|A|B]

Preparation:Talk to the children about “being able to say no”. About how important it is to be brave and be able to be the person who says “stop”. A good friend asks other people to stop teasing.

When dancing to this song, the children will use the stop sign signalled by holding out an arm with the palm of the hand facing away from them.

Game:A: “Hvis du er en drillepind…” Everybody dances round to the music however they like. Every time the word “stop” is sung, they stop and make the stop sign with their hands. When there’s a pause in the music, they all freeze.

B: “Jeg siger stop…” They all stand still, sing along with the chorus and show the stop sign.

A and B: Same as above.

Solo: They all run round in a long row. They all run after the person in front of them in the row and do the same movements as that person (like in the Kongens efterfølger game).

A and B: Same as before.

Alternative:The music can also be used for the traditional Musical Statues dance. The children all dance around, and when the music stops they all stand still. The children can also play Musical Chairs, where they have to find a chair to sit on when the mu-sic stops. One variant of Musical Chairs involves using fewer chairs. Then, then the music stops, the children have to help one another to find somewhere to sit by sharing a chair or letting some-one else sit on their knee.

KOM SÆT DIG HER [COME AND SIT HERE] – game

Form:[intro|A|A|A|outro]

Materials:Silk scarves

Preparation:The children split up into two groups and everyone is given a silk scarf. They have to practise mirror dancing with each other so that they know what mirror dancing is.

Game:Silk scarf ballet/mirror dance. Each child has a silk scarf in their hand. Half of the children start off by just watching, while the other half are out on the floor.

Intro: The children out on the floor sit cross-legged. When the music begins, they grow slowly and gently, like flowers. They wave their scarves gently in the air.

A: “Kom sæt dig…” The children run round on the floor, waving their scarves and drawing pic-tures in the air and performing a ballet for the children watching. When the verse has finished, every child runs over and swaps places with one of the audience.

A: “Kom sæt dig…” Now the second group of children perform a scarf ballet for their audience. When this verse has finished, every child invites one of the children watching to come and join in the ballet so they can all dance together.

A: “Kom lad mig…” The children now stand and face one another in pairs and do a mirror dance with their scarves, using calm, gentle movements.

Outro: The children slowly sit down cross-legged and finish off by placing their scarves over their heads.

Alternative:You can also use the entire song for a mirror dance.

This is a quiet song which can also be used as a comforting song or for relaxation.

VI ER VENNER [WE ARE FRIENDS] - game

Form:[A|B|A|B|B|B|B]

Materials:Parachute/sheetBalloonsBall (alternativs)Buddy Bear (alternativs)

Preparation:Blow up a number of balloons, equivalent to about half the number of children taking part in the game.

Game:The parachute is spread out and the children spread out around the parachute. They crouch down and grab hold of the edge of the parachute with both hands. Place balloons in the middle of the parachute.

A, B, A: They all then move the parachute up and down gently and try to get the balloons to fly into the air.

B x 4: The parachute is removed and everybody stands up. The children now have to keep the balloons in the air by tapping them.

It’s important to make sure that nobody grabs hold of the balloons. They have to remain up in the air the whole time. As there aren’t enough balloons to go round, the children have to be patient and wait for a balloon to come to them which they can tap.

Alternative:The parachute game can also be played with a ball which rolls around on the parachute between all the children. When the ball stops by one of the children, he or she can take hold of the ball and throw it into the middle of the parachute. You can also use Buddy Bear instead of a ball so that he can enjoy a ride on the parachute.

You can finish off by making a cave under the parachute. Some children hold the parachute, while the others crawl into the cave. Even the parachute holders can peek into the cave and see what’s going on and join in with the chat. The cave provides a golden opportunity to talk calmly with the children. If Buddy Bear is there, the children can also sing “Kom sæt dig her” and cuddle their bears.

Music for massage

Three of these tracks have been written to go with the massage programme in the bookletThe person you touch, you do not bully.

9.Morgen ved strand 10.Aften med stjerner 11.Prelude II

This music can also be used for general relaxation, which is a splendid end to a rhythmics session.

You can use bubbles for the end of the session if you like. Play the “Prelude II” track and ask the children to choose a space on the floor and lie on their backs. The children should all find their own space to lie in. While they lie listening to the music with their eyes closed, the carer walks round quietly and blows bubbles over the children. The intention is not for the children to catch the bubbles, but just for them to lie still and watch the bubbles float gently down over them. The children can also lie with their eyes open and enjoy watching the colours in the bubbles.

Recipe for bubble mix• 1 cup of liquid detergent

• 3 cups of water

• 1/8 cup of glycerine (sold in supermarkets, chemists or similar) You don’t need the glycerine to make the bubbles, but it does make the bubbles last a lot longer.
