Research Opportunity

You are invited to consider joining an interesting research project analyzing mother-

child conversations about their disagreements (for example, about getting their

homework done, cleaning their rooms, fighting with siblings). The children are

5th graders, so 10 or 11 years old.

This semester, the professors involved in the research (Drs. Carlo, Ispa, and Horstman)

are looking for students who are detail-oriented and enjoy thinking about parent-child

interaction. The work will involve watching videotapes of mother-child conversations

and transcribing (typing word-for-word) what they say. The families who participated

in the research are African American, European American, and Latino, and we plan to

match transcribers with families of the same ethnicity. All work will be done in Gentry

Hall. About twice a month, we will schedule a meeting to give everyone an

opportunity to discuss their observations and practice some coding.

This rich learning opportunity is available as a volunteer research experience (which

looks great for a resume!), for academic credit, or for pay through the Work Study

program and additional options. Please email Dr. Haley Horstman

at [email protected] if you are interested!
