Reader’s Workshop Ask your child: Ask me what is happening in the Read Aloud Gooseberry Park. Ask me more nonfiction text features I learned about this week. Ask me how these features help a reader. I continue to look for and use text features to help me become an expert on a topic I am reading in a book so I can share my knowledge with others! I continue to use post-it notes to capture ideas and to write I WONDER statements about the topic. What are some topics you are an expert on from reading Writer’s Workshop: Ask your child: As a nonfiction writer I can write Nonfiction Chapter Books, Stories That Teach, How-To- Books and Question and Answer books. I am using mentor texts. I am finding books like those I want to write and letting the authors of those books mentor me. I am trying to use text features like the Mrs. Smoral’s Class November 2, 2018 Math Workshop: Ask your child: Tell me about the calendar markers on the November calendar grid. What kind of clocks are on the markers? Ask me about making rectangles with color tiles and then writing equations to describe the rectangles. I am learning to add numbers on an open ended number line. What are the multiples of 3, 4, and 5? What are landmark numbers? Numbers that have a 0 or 5 in the tens place. How do landmark numbers help me add and subtract? Word Study: Ask your child: Ask me the new word feature I am practicing with my new set of word study words. I am learning about synonyms, antonyms, and homophones. Ask your child: Ask me what is happening in

the Read Aloud Gooseberry Park.

Ask me more nonfiction text features I learned about this week. Ask me how these features help a reader. I continue to look for and use text features to help me become an expert on a topic I am reading in a book so I can share my knowledge with others!

I continue to use post-it notes to capture ideas and to write I WONDER statements about the topic.

What are some topics you are an expert on from reading nonfiction books this week?

Ask me about the Reader’s Theater, The Ugly Pumpkin.What was my part? I am learning fluent readers read with expression, good tone of voice and adjust their voice depending on the size of the audience. Ask me which classes came to our Reader’s Theater.

Writer’s Workshop: Ask your child: As a nonfiction writer I can write Nonfiction Chapter Books, Stories

That Teach, How-To-Books and Question and Answer books. I am using mentor texts. I am finding books like those I want to

write and letting the authors of those books mentor me. I am trying to use text features like the table of contents, pictures

with captions, diagrams and labels, bold face words and a glossary in my nonfiction books.

I am rereading my writing to myself and my peers noticing the places where I can make my writing even better!

MATH VOCABULARY: unknown, decompose, difference, odd, even, greater than, less than, thousand, related facts, fact families, estimate, place value, digital clock, analog clock, elapsed time.

Word Study: Ask your child: Ask me the new word feature I am practicing with my new

set of word study words. I am learning about synonyms, antonyms, and homophones.

Ask me some examples of these kinds of words. I look for these word types as I sort my word study words each week.

I am working in the iReady vocabulary app learning many new words. Ask me a few new words I have learned!
