A baptism was held on the last scheduled Saturday night service of the summer. The child being baptized was Behrett Kenneth Vail, son of Zach and Korryn Vail. Proud grandparents are Ken & Denise Fenne and great grandmother is Gerneen Zurkirchen.
Above, Pastor Kim is in the process of preforming the baptism service. Below, Pastor Kim, with assistance from Behrett, is placing the water on his head while he plays in the water. After getting water on his hand, Behrett then blessed his mother’s head.
On Sunday, August 13th, the final concert in the park was held. Everyone in attendance enjoyed the popular Madison Area Ukulele Initiative as they returned for their annual New Glarus appearance. They played folk, pop and jazz tunes from the 1920s to the present for all to sing. Dave & Sally Landmark raised money for the stained glass fund by selling ice cream and toppings.

Rosalie and Ron, the Swiss Alphorns and the Männer Chor of New Glarus, helped bring a bit of Switzerland to Swiss Church on August 6th during the Swiss celebration of Volksfest. The Alphorns played during the call to worship. Ron and Rosalie played before the service started and the Männer Chor sang four songs during the service. Everyone in attendance thoroughly enjoyed the gift of music each group provided.
About a hundred grownups and kids alike enjoyed good food and games at the Swiss Church Community Picnic held on Sunday, August 20th at Veterans Memorial Park. The day was cloudy and comfortable for everyone including our members from the New Glarus Home who arrived by shuttle. There was plenty of food so no one went home hungry. Thanks to Beau Alderman for coordinating a wonderful time that was had by all.
Pastor’s Message Rev. Kim Moeller
Missional Church. This is a phrase that is all the rage in church vitality circles. But what does it mean and is it something we at Swiss Church should care about?
While missional church definitions can vary greatly, I use the phrase to refer to a community called together by God to love God and to serve as the necessary hands and feet to bring God’s realm of hope and healing together with Jesus’ love and grace to the world. A missional church is
concerned with more than maintaining programs for existing members; it is called to mobilize its people both individually and as a community to daily self-sacrifice for the hurting world around them. A missional church is both inwardly strong and outwardly focused.
Too often, churches can become more like membership clubs, fixated on maintaining the status quo--building upkeep, meeting members' desires, and protecting its cultural privilege in society--rather than on God's ministry in the world. These churches focus only on the people and issues “inside the church walls”.
Congregations that are truly missional are motivated to make a difference in the lives of others, especially those outside their congregation. They do so because they believe that is what Jesus calls his followers to do.
Doug Powe, director of the Lewis Center for Church Leadership, offers two questions to help us evaluate if we are truly missional or are we just pretending to be as a means to an end. He asks, “Is our purpose to make a difference in the lives of others, under God’s leading? Or is our purpose to help others as a means of promoting or growing the church?” If we evaluate a ministry by the number of new members it brings to the church, we are not being truly missional.
So as we work to be good stewards of our beautiful campus, let’s remember that a building is not the church. It can be an important tool but it is people who are the church. And Jesus calls us to bring hope and healing not just to those who enter our church to worship, but also to those in our neighborhoods, our towns, and our world. Are we stepping out of our comfort zone to build relationships with others—especially those who may be very different than ourselves--or are we more likely to do ministry from a place of comfort?
I am proud of the many ways we at Swiss Church are missional—our activities at the New Glarus Home and Lodge, as well as the many volunteer hours and financial support to Habitat for Humanity, Green Cares Food Pantry, Family Promise, Salvation Army, All God’s Children in El Salvador, as well as our ministry to our neighbors through the cemetery.
Let us continue and expand our commitment to be the hands and feet of Jesus, to work to bring God’s realm of hope and healing together with Jesus’ love and grace to our world. Let us never forget the words of Jesus when asked to name the most important commandment, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these."

Planned Giving Review
The Planned Giving Committee of Swiss Church meets quarterly to monitor Endowment Fund performance and review other issues important to the Fund. Members of the committee include Jon Ziltner, Carrie Krahenbuhl, Dan Truttmann, Chris Kiesz and Kim Bright.
During the April and July meetings so far in 2017, the committee has approved recommendations to consistory for recipients of 2016 interest earnings, a recommendation to change the investment choice for Endowment Funds, is overseeing the re-print of the Planned Giving Bylaws following Congregation approval of edits at the February 2017 annual meeting, and is preparing a “Fact Sheet” for distributing with the new Planned Giving brochure to help potential donors with donation options that can often be complex and confusing.
The Endowment Fund earned $6,686.03 in interest during 2016, and the committee recommended to Consistory that it be distributed in the following manner consistent with the Bylaws;
1. 20% Benevolent Interests of the Congregation, the recommendation is for this amount to be split equally between Green Cares Food Pantry and Green County Habitat for Humanity. 2. 10-50% Innovative Ministries not financed by our General Fund, the recommendation is for 45% to be spent on an audio visual project for the sanctuary. 3. 10% Christian Education or Higher Education in Christian Ed, the recommendation is for this amount to be spent on adult Christian education programming at Swiss Church. 4. Up to 25% Capital Improvements, the recommendation is for the full 25% to be spent on capital improvements, with the choice left to consistory among the several projects we currently face.
Please note that these are recommendations from the Planned Giving committee to Consistory, and Consistory has the final approval and option to change as they see fit.
The Committee also recommended to Consistory that the investment choice for the Endowment Fund be changed from it's current 100% allocation to the Moderate Balanced fund at United Church Funds. Planned Giving Bylaws state that once the fund exceeds $50,000 in size, income must be emphasized over growth in the way the fund is invested. The Moderate Balanced fund has an Equity to Income ratio of 60% to 40%. Moving 50% of Endowment Funds from Moderate Balanced to Conservative Balanced and its 35% Equity to 65% Income ratio, would bring the total fund back into compliance with Bylaw directions to “emphasize income over growth” now that the fund has reached a Book Value of $298,608 and Market Value of $472,806. Like the interest recipients, the Committee only recommends to Consistory, where final approval ultimately resides.
If anyone has questions or comments for the Planned Giving committee, please contact any of us listed above, or contact the church office.
Thank you! The Planned Giving Committee

Camp AweSumDear Friends,I recently had the opportunity to work as a volunteer occupational therapist at Camp AweSum, a camp for children and young adults with Autism Spectrum Conditions, at Moon Beach Camp in St. Germain. As many of you are aware, the UCC church as two beautiful camping facilities in Wisconsin; Pilgrim Camp in Green Lake and Moon Beach Camp in St. Germain. For the past fourteen years, Moon Beach has been pairing with Camp AweSum, and providing a beautiful location for both their youth and family camps. I have volunteered for three summers at the family camp, and it has been amazing to watch children grow, both in skills and height! Camp AweSum provides an incredible experience to families, with daily respite built in for parents, fun activities for children including horseback riding, archery, drumming, water front activities, arts and crafts, and sports/games activities. In addition, children have access to a sensory room, including multiple outdoor sensory swings to meet their unique sensory needs. Many children and adults on the Autism Spectrum experience differences in how they process sensory information from the environment and part of my role at camp is to assist helping each camper and counselor identify the camper's sensory needs and address those needs. Many campers require noise cancelling headphones to block out noises, swinging to provide calming sensory input, or a weighted vest or blanket to assist with better knowing where their body is in space. In the afternoon, parents and children have time together to swim, kayak, go sailing, and just relax by the lake. The motto of camp is "respected, protected, loved, and accepted" and it's really amazing to see how this motto carries through to making a very relaxing, safe environment where children with Autism Spectrum Conditions are able to "be themselves" and families feel a sense of belonging. During the past year, plans have been developed for a new two story Welcome Building at Moon Beach that would house a very large, new sensory room that would provide for additional sensory strategies for our children with Autism Spectrum Conditions. Indoor swings, opportunities for jumping and climbing safely, and areas where children can have quiet space (ie. built in open cubbies under the stairs) while still being supervised by their counselor staff have been discussed and planned for. As an occupational therapist, it gives me great joy to see the United Church of Christ camps not only welcome with open arms families who have children with special needs, but make a long term commitment to meeting the needs of this population of campers. The building will also house the Canteen, workshop, and conference rooms. Currently, the Campital Campaign is in process. If you would like more information about how to support the amazing work that is happing at Moon Beach and Camp AweSum, please feel free to contact me or to check out ucci.org for more information.

Swiss Church Trivia TeamBeginning Tuesday, September 12, 7:00pm at Toffler’s
Pastor Kim is organizing a Swiss Church Trivia Team once again for Tuesday night trivia competition beginning September 12 at Toffler’s in New Glarus. We care more about having fun than winning so we want anyone and everyone who likes playing trivia—even if you think you’re not very good at it. You never know what random factoid you might know that no one else remembers. Send Kim an email ([email protected]) if you want to jump on the trivia band wagon. You don’t need to commit to playing every week—we’re a low pressure, low-commitment group.
Faith and Film: Watch and Discuss “Selma!”Sunday, September 17 at 3:30“Selma” is the unforgettable true story that chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965 when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernay's "Selma" tells the story of how Dr. King and others brought about change that forever altered history. How does our faith, whatever our beliefs, inform our actions on behalf of social justice? Given the challenges to racial unity and understanding that we, as a country, are currently facing, what can we learn from Dr. King's work?
We’ll meet at Pastor Kim’s house, 508 2nd Street (OK to park in driveway) at 3:30. We’ll nosh and watch the movie followed by 20-30 minutes of conversation and community. We’ll talk, we’ll agree and we will disagree, but always in a respectful, non-judgmental environment. Ultimately, we will seek to come to a deeper understanding of our own stories, the stories of others, and our stories of the Divine. Swiss UCC provides popcorn and hot water/tea. Thank you to all who bring something to share. RSVP: [email protected] or call the church office.Next Film: Chocolat on October 29th.
