“nang” means “Miss, Mrs., word used before or in place of name of women or right.”“sip song” means “twelve girls”“Nang Sip Song” means “twelve girls”This tale goes like this

A couple had twelve daughters. The family was too poor to find enough food to eat. Many times the husband and wife did not have anything to eat because their children ate it up. They decided to leave their little daughters in the forest.

One day father and mother took all the twelve little girls into the deep forest a long way from home. They told their daughters to wait there. They said they had to go to the toilet. The couple ran away quickly from the children. The little girls lived on fruit and vegetables in the deep forest.

Many years later, heavy rain came and so there was a lot of rice to eat. The couple thought of their children. They went into the deep forest to look for the girls. When they met their daughters, their children did not know them. They did not understand the human language. The children were afraid of their father and mother.

Finally, the husband and wife had to leave all the twelve girls to live in the forest until they became apes.

and Thao Buahiang. In their childhoods, these three children liked going out to play with villagers’ children. Their father was not satisfied with them. He told them not to go out to play and have fun with villagers’ children again. The triplets could not bear it, so they sneaked out of the palace to play with their friends again. The father was very angry. He ordered the soldiers to kill the triplets. But the mother asked for mercy. The three children were sent to study knowledge of magic. They appreciated their mother, so they were ordained as novices. After the period of the Buddhist Lent, they left the novicehood. The triplets wandered into the forest to study knowledge of magic. They met a widowed giantess who disguised herself as a human being. She cared for the three children, accepted them as her step-sons, and taught them all her knowledge of magic.

One day the giantess went into the forest for pleasure. The three boys happened to see many carcasses and bones of humans and animals which the giantess killed and ate. They were afraid and escaped from the giantess’s house. When the giantess came back home, she followed the children. When she saw her step-sons and knew that they did not want to live with her any longer, she gave them magic weapons and talismans. These things were in only one thing. It was a magic silk thread to wear around the neck. It was able to prevent fierce animals and ghosts. And each magic silk thread could make the boy disguise himself as a bird if he wished. The three boys then disguised themselves as birds and flew to venture many places. Every boy when grew up had his spouse. Whenever they faced a bad situation, they

(ดดแปลงจากปราโมทย นาสารย. 2548 : 371)

A fierce tiger was lying upon the hole of a cobra. The snake could hardly breathe so it bit the tiger to death.

A hermit came across the dead tiger and he pitied it. He used his magic to make the tiger recover from death. When the tiger was alive again, it was very angry with the hermit. It said the hermit had disturbed its sleep. It would kill and eat him. The hermit told the tiger all the truth but it did not believe him. They started a quarrel.

The tiger and the hermit went to a god for judgement. The bad god said the tiger was right. The hermit was not satisfied so they went to see the king of bulls. The cowardly king of bulls said the tiger was right. The hermit saw that the judgement was unfair so they went to see the king of apes. The timid king of apes said the hermit was wrong. The hermit saw that the judgement of the king of apes was unjust so they went to see the king of rabbits. The wise king of rabbits took the tiger and the hermit to see the place where the incident had really happened. The judge rabbit told the tiger to lie down upon the cobra’s hole to

เนอหาบทท 5Tale 5 : Kong Khao Noi Kha Mae

A Kong Khao (or Klong Khao in Thai) is a bamboo box for containing sticky rice. The word noi means “small”. Kong Khao Noi Kha Mae means “because the rice-box was small, he killed his own mother.” Phra Thad means a relic of Buddha. A relic may be a bone, a tooth, a piece of hair, or anything from the body. Each thing is regarded as holy. In general, most people think that Phra Thad is a pagoda or a stupa for containing relics of the Buddha or remains of a high-ranking monk or a royal person. Here in this tale, Phra Thad refers to the stupa containing remains (bones) of a mother who was killed by her own hungry son.

This tale goes like this :Long ago, at Ban Tad Thong, a village in

Yasothon, there lived a mother and her son. They were rice farmers like their neighbours. Early in the

67

morning the son went to work on a small rice field, and every morning his mother brought him his breakfast.

One day in the rice farming season, the son left home before dawn to plough the field. He worked late that morning. The sun shone brightly and it was hot. The young man was hungry. While working, he looked and looked many times for his mother. But she did not appear. After a long while, she showed up at last. He scolded his mother rudely. The mother said she had just come from the temple on the Buddhist holiday for merit making. She quickly opened the boxes of food and asked her son to eat his breakfast. When the hungry young man saw the small rice-box, he became very angry. He said, “There is not enough rice in this small rice-box for me to eat. Why don’t you bring me bigger one?” His mother said, This rice-box is small but there is much rice in it, dear son. Please eat it and you’ll be full.”

He was very hungry and he became more angry. With a heavy yoke he hit his mother hard on her head . The poor old woman fell down on the ground and died pitifully.

The sinful young man sat down and hungrily ate his breakfast. He became very full quickly. There was a lot of rice still left in the small rice-box. When his hunger and anger went away from him, his conscience came back to him. Now he felt for his mother. The son held his mother’s body tightly and cried sadly for a long time. His matricide (killing his own mother) made the young man unhappy. He could neither eat nor sleep for many days and nights. Some senior monks suggested that he should build a rice-box-shape stupa as a monument to remind people of his great sin. The young man entered monkhood for the rest of his life. The stupa he built was called “Phra Thad Kong Khao Noi Kha Mae.” But today for a better feeling and for tourism it is called “Phra Thad Kong Khao Noi.”

Tale : 6 Thao Kam Kadam An ugly-looking baby boy was born to a poor

family. He looked like a dirty black monkey. His parents hated him and put him on a raft and floated him out along the river stream. Indra transformed himself into a black crow and saved the baby. Indra gave him a place to live and food to eat. Because the baby was black like a crow so the crow looked after him, he was called Thao Kam Kadam.

When he became a young man, he lived with Ya Chom Suan (an old woman who was the chief of gardeners to look after the king’s garden) He worked hard and Ya Chom Suan was kind to him.

One fine day, all the seven daughters of the king of Inthapat City visited the garden. Thao Kam Kadam watched them secretly and fell in love with the youngest sister, Nang Lun. His heart was full of love.

During the night he played his khaen (a popular Isan woodwind instrument) along the city streets. His music was very sweet and impressive. Nang Lun liked it very much. The king told Thao Kam Kadam to play the khaen in the palace. Nang Lun and Thao Kam Kadam had a chance to talk to each other there.

Later, Thao Kam Kadam wanted to marry Nang Lun. He asked Ya Chom Suan to beg for permission from Nang Lun’s father. Ya Chom Suan went to see the king and told him about her wish. The king asked for a very large amount of money and a great deal of gold.

Indra came to help. He gave Ya Chom Suan money, gold and everything the king wanted. Indra
