Message of Vice – Chancellor

Dear Student,

The KSOU came into existence in 1996 and till date, it has been trying its best to provide distance education system through available means. In this context, I feel extremely happy and proud to welcome those who seek admission for Fine Arts degree program. There are many reasons as to why distance education is popular from the traditional education across the world. Now a days it is quite possible for a student to fulfill the thirst for higher education in Fine Arts through multimedia being at his/her own place. This Face to Face Fine Arts local coaching system is supportive and having motivating factor to have better awareness in the field of Fine Arts.

Our University has granted permission to start Face to Face Fine Arts education at SALA Mysore, from the academic year 2010-11. This system helps more for the Fine Arts Students academic progress. I can say this is an innovative Fine Arts education system introduced for the first time in India.

In the context of universalization and with the back ground where technologies are becoming modernized more and more, there is an urgent need to convert our ancient arts suitable to the demand of modern society and also there is an urgent need to resurrect and resuscitate our cultural knowledge. It is highly essential to introduce modern art besides ancient art which have pre-eminent place in Indian culture as there is an urgent need to have knowledge of invigorating art traditional and contemporary visual and performing arts. Our prime motto is to facilitate those who are very much interested and have aesthetic taste in Fine Arts.

I have full confidence that all of you can shape your future with this type of awareness and study by completing degree programs in the field of Fine Arts to become more competitive in the near future.

The Principles of the Distance Education:Self-Instructional Lessons:

Distance education simply means imparting education from a distance. In this system of education the teacher and the student are physically separated. The Students are supplied with printed material written in a self instructional mode. Course material is specially designed by a team of experts from industrious faculty, from learning institutions and in-house faculty of the university. The curriculum designed is subject to strict scrutiny by the content experts and experienced professors before adoption by the university. Whenever necessary, supplement printed material, video, audio cassettes /debates, discussions, workshops and they can be in the form of lectures.

Academic Counseling: Counseling is an important activity in distance education. It is totally different

from conventional class room teaching. Counselors answer the student’s question in these sessions besides clarifying their doubts and help them to overcome difficulties, which they may face while going through the text. These counseling sessions also give the students an opportunity to interact with their peers.

Credit System (Assignments): Assignments are integral components of distance education. Assignments serve

the purpose of evaluation of the student’s comprehension. The local counselors evaluate these assignments and also provide feedback on the student’s performance. A copy of the evaluated assignments will be shown to the student by the coordinator or as part of the learning activity.

Project Report:

10

A brief account of Local Art EducationIntroduction:

India is an abode of Inborn and inbred Artists. Our folk literature – mythology – legends and the history of time and place reveal this fact. The places of jubilant artistic heritage and importance have proved this saying. Apart from this, our renowned, noted luminaries – outstanding and Creative personalities like Vyasa, Vasista, Valmiki, kalidasa, Sarvajna and countless many others. Memorable sculptors like Kashyapa, Jakkanna, Dankana, Aristanemi, Cheeraghatti, Chirtalekha, Chitrada sangaiah, Raja Ravivarma, Narada, Bharatamuni, Matangamuni, the Lord Sri Krishna, Hanumantha, Akka mahadevi, Meera, Tansen, Thayagaraja like innumerable musicians never had acquired any university formal degrees.

But all these above mentioned gems and pearls like personalities of our land out of their commendable and spell – bound, artistic talent attracted the attention of the whole world. By the grace of inbred artists the flood of pilgrims across the world has been flowing into the country, to Visit and enjoy the indelible tourist spots, where each stone Carving are whispering and singing gently. Historical Monuments have left the legacy behind the earth.

At the same time millions and Billions of foreign exchange is flowing into the land which is added revenue to the country through national exchange. Such great Artists were neglected and condemned as they were not academically qualified and did not possess formal university degree. The trend of condemning this great inborn artist conspicuously appeared after the establishment of academic modern conventional universities. Now, to get rid of distress minds, the prime aim and the only way of introducing local art education. In this regard the SALA academy is striving hard to introduce art degrees to all those who are having inborn artistic skill and talent. This is the pioneer and quiet new concept in the whole country.

The Specialty and introduction of Local Art Education (Face to Face) The practical oriented art education cannot be taught to the students those who are at a distance through credit unit system of written ready made lessons. On line education system is not accessible to the poor and the students of rural parts. Yet video conference education needs crores of rupees investment. This is not possible for the study centers. Therefore a new teaching method is innovated to impart art education through local art education. This has been made applicable only to art education. KSOU imparts Fine arts education in the form of local art education through SALA. But this may not be the complete distance education. In this art education the student gets proper teaching from their local art teacher in the direct education method as well as mutual faith. Therefore

17

this is a kind of traditional education. The student has to obtain attendance certificate from their local art teacher for attending classes and submit the same to SALA.

It is pledge to rejuvenate the amateurs’ art talents in the direction of local art education. This method is not applicable to the other educational aspects. Because, the art education is a special imaginary and feeling related and skillful expression based education.

The local art means, the art student achieves skill by receiving tuition from the local art teacher who may be from their place or nearest one. The SALA provides the necessary fundamental classic knowledge in Fine Arts through the special contact classes from the veteran and renowned art lecturers.

The local distance education is different from that of the general distance education. Because this study psychologically depends on mental and caliber ability of the art student. The education which is a brain and heart related cannot be studied by dividing into units and credits. The student needs complete freedom in this study as it is depended on practical essentiality and the mental inspiration and spirit of the student. Therefore Art education has been considered as unrelated to distance education.

Here, the classic subjects are gained by experience by doing practical’s continuously. It cannot be taught this practical oriented art education through mere readymade lessons only. Therefore, it is insisted, that the art student should get tuition privately from the locally available art teacher. It is made compulsory, that the art student has to obtain attendance certificate from the local art teacher.

There will be no division of credit unit in the lessons which we supply to the student. Here, the art student is an emotional being. Hence, it is rather difficult for the art student to study everyday about units and credits as compulsory one. The art student studies complete texts through the teacher only. Therefore, it is the duty of the educational authorities to provide free and open opportunity to student according to his psychological inspiration.

We do all necessary arrangements at the time of contact classes and provide lessons, demonstrations from the academic professional artists at national level. This has its own influence and help to artistic personality development. This type of varied influence cannot be gained only by the local art teachers. So, our SALA has a special program to bring the students under the influence of veteran artists.

In one academic period, 15 days classes will be held continuously from morning till evening in a day. For the remaining period the student receives tuition privately and obtain attendance certificate.
