Amsterdam Science Park is located on the eastern side of the city easily accessible by public transport and road. The science park is home to the scientists from all over the world and is renowned for innovation, high tech startups, innovative companies and home to the highest concentration of publicly funded research in the Netherlands. Recently the Dutch institute for space research expertise, SRON decided to relocate to the Science Park as well as Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX), one of the largest Internet exchanges globally. How do we relate to and what is our position in these scientific and technological developments? How can we translate this into something tangible and what is its visible potential? That is our theme for this edition of the Urban Campsite project. ‘THE ART OF TECH-LIVING’. Man is undergoing through the greatest technological developments in history. We will explore how these innovations will help us grow a sustainable society where technological advances will enhanced our quality of living. Our location in Amsterdam Science Park represents the diversity of our future. Anna’s Tuin & Ruigte (Anna’s Garden & Wildernis) on the north side, experiments with both permaculture and returning land to its natural habitat. Turn to the south and you will see the developments that houses organizations such as the UvA faculty of Sciences, the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) and related companies which find their home in the Science Park. # THE ASSIGNMENT In this assignment we look for the similarities between art and science. Can we expand both beyond their known disciplines and experiment with new ideas? Our challenge is to bring art and science together in this fashion. The question arises, HOW CAN INOVATION (TECHNOLOGICAL) AND SUSTAINABILITY ENRICH OUR LIVES? How does it feel, smell, taste or sound? How does it sleep, what does it look like? We have asked scientists and students from the University of Amsterdam (UvA), de Vrije Universiteit (VU), the Hogeschool of Amsterdam, and entrepreneurs connected to the Science Park to think about how innovations can be used with regard to energy, food production, sanitation and other facilities required to run the campsite. We ask you to think about these concepts in the sphere of design and innovation, to create a concept answering these challenges and translate those into design that answers the challenges of innovative urban development. # CONNECTION ART AND SCIENCE The aim of the Urban Campsite project is to bring together both the artist and scientist that must be clear. Their collaboration will strengthen the connection of the different disciplines and enhance the fruition of the project. Artists are invited to come forward with suggestions, originate ideas, elaborate further on their assignments associated with the project and work together with scientists and students. Ideas, questions and queries will be put towards the participating science community, they will decide who is best suited to support the artist in realizing the successful completion of the project. This collaboration can take form in sharing knowledge but also for instance in the supply of building materials or actual physical assistance. Participating parties from the science park have expressed their enthusiasm to play their part in realizing the goals set forward by the Urban Campsite organization. Collaboration is off course not a mandatory requirement neither do we expect that all requests for assistance can be answered. # PRACTICAL REQUIREMENTS Accommodation should sleep at least two persons, accommodation of four was very popular at the last edition. Accommodation should be wind and rain proof (74 km/ hr, 40 kts), consideration should be given to wet conditions with regard to the sleeping area. The object will be put on grass or sandy soil, consider the drainage and securing. Fire regulations must be adhered to. No loose parts which can be moved by the wind. Extra space for some storage, think of luggage and personal effects. Accommodation should be able to be secured. Accommodation should be available for use from June 1st through August 31st 2017, dissembled and removed the first week of September. We will provide two mattresses (140cm x 200cm) and bedding. 06-11-16

BRIEFING URBANCAMPSITE AMSTERDAM

Your participation in our 2017 Urban Campsite project is well appreciated. This briefing will explain more about the details such as location, the actual assignment, compensation and planning with regard to the sleeping accommodation you will design and build.

# THEME & LOCATION

We have found a great location for our Urban Campsite project during the summer 2017.

# THE ASSIGNMENT

In this assignment we look for the similarities between art and science. Can we expand both beyond their known disciplines and experiment with new ideas? Our challenge is to bring art and science together in this fashion.

The question arises, HOW CAN INOVATION (TECHNOLOGICAL) AND SUSTAINABILITY ENRICH OUR LIVES?How does it feel, smell, taste or sound? How does it sleep, what does it look like?

We have asked scientists and students from the University of Amsterdam (UvA), de Vrije Universiteit (VU), the Hogeschool of Amsterdam, and entrepreneurs connected to the Science Park to

think about how innovations can be used with regard to energy, food production, sanitation and other facilities required to run the campsite.

We ask you to think about these concepts in the sphere of design and innovation, to create a concept answering these challenges and translate those into design that answers the challenges of innovative urban development.

# CONNECTION ART AND SCIENCE

Their collaboration will strengthen the connection of the different disciplines and enhance the fruition of the project.Artists are invited to come forward with suggestions, originate ideas, elaborate further on their assignments associated with the project and work together with scientists and students.Ideas, questions and queries will be put towards the participating science community, they will decide who is best suited to support the artist in realizing the successful completion of the project. This collaboration can take form in sharing knowledge but also for instance in the supply of building materials or actual physical assistance.

Participating parties from the science park have expressed their enthusiasm to play their part in realizing the goals set forward by the Urban Campsite organization.Collaboration is off course not a mandatory requirement neither do we expect that all requests for assistance can be answered.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection of the 12 sleep objects we place on Urban From all entries our advisory board will select twelve designs to take part in the 2017 Urban Campsite Amsterdam project.

Entries will be judged on the following criteria:• The relationship between assignment and design.• How will your work feature in the whole concept. The board will look at quality, talent and feasibility, will your work create a buzz with both our sleeping guests and visitors alike.• The practicality of the design as a sleeping accommodation.

Members of the advisory board:Maike van Stiphout - studied landscape architecture at the Wageningen University and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. In 1993 she founded DS Landscape Architects. She served on the ASMAL committee and the Culture Council and is a member of several quality teams and advisory groups. She is a jury member of the Heritage Award, the Prize for Cultural Heritage of the European Union, and has been a guest lecturer at the academies of architecture in Arnhem and Amsterdam.

Sander Borsje – Neighborhood Workshop Noorderhof en Boomhuttenfest foundation

Michel de Rooij – Nowhere Foundation

Holger Nickisch – Member of the Board at Stichting AtelierWG, former director Kunstfort Vijfhuizen

Kees Diepenveen – municipal executive board member city of Utrecht, owner Dromen, Denken en Doen.

# COMPENSATION

Compensation for building material, labour and transport is €3.500 (incl. VAT).When the occupancy rate during the project’s running period is greater than 50% (45 nights), €35 for each additional night’s booking will be due to the artist.Although we have ran both project in 2013 and 2015 artistically and financially successfully, we must add a cautionary note that we do depend on subsidies. The expectation is that the subsidies applied for will be granted for the 2017 edition. Would there be an unexpected shortfall in our finances we will communicate this to all involved as soon as possible. We will make sure the budget covers all expenses and costs.

# PLANNING

Submit your plans including sketches, drafts or ideas by DECEMBER 20th.Please indicate if you are interested or willing to cooperate with a member of the Science Park team. Elaborate how you feel the different disciplines will work in your design and tell us how we can assist getting the right people to collaborate.
