    On behalf of the jury I would like to heartily congratulate this year’s worthy winners of the European Language Label and the Language Ambassador Award.

    The European Language Label recognises creative and inventive ways to improve the quality of language teaching and learning. Innovative approaches to language learning in the classroom and to developing awareness about language in the community are as important as ever, since they are key to raising standards and consciousness of excellence. Year after year in this competition, the jury works hard, through the processes of intensive examination, short listing and site visits, to ensure that the hallmark of excellence is clearly evident in each award-winning project.

    As in previous years, innovation and excellence are immediately recognisable in the eleven projects awarded the Label this year, which cover a wide range of successful ideas and effectively attested approaches and methods. Award-winning projects like these provide a potential source of inspiration for others working with different languages and in different contexts. As we continue to confront economic obstacles, more than ever, we need to identify and award the innovators in our fi eld and to learn from those who create fl exible responses and encourage initiative.

    This year again we equally honour the outstanding winners of The Language Ambassador Award 2010. This award recognises the inspirational achievements of individuals in the fi eld of language learning and language education.

    Bronntar An Séala Eorpach Teanga orthu siúd ar fad a dhéanann éacht maidir le foghlaim agus cur chun cinn teangacha. Bíonn an chruthaitheacht agus an nuálacht araon go smior i gconaí iontu. Féachann baill an ghiúire chuige go mbíonn faobhar an fheabhais i gcónaí ar na tionscadail a roghnaítear don duais seo trí dhianscrúdú cáiréiseach a dhéanamh ar na hiarratais go léir agus trí dhul chun agallaimh leo siúd a bhíonn ar an ngearrliosta acu.

    Is 11 buaiteoirí den scoth atá againn anseo arís i mbliana a mbeidh a moladh á chanadh againn go léir ar ndóigh i gcaitheamh na hócáide seo inniu agus i bhfad ina diaidh. Agus an saol ag teannadh orainn le tamall de mhíonna anuas, tá géarghá anois, níos mó ná riamh, le daoine ar nós na mbuaiteoirí seo a thugann spreagadh intinne, misneach agus lón samhlaíochta dúinn. Go scaipe siad fuinneamh an fheabhais agus na cruthaitheachta inár measc agus go ngrioga siad chun na nuálachta sinn.

    Tréaslaímid chomh maith céanna le buaiteoirí uaisle Duais an Ambasadóra Teanga 2010. Tugtar aitheantas trí mheán na duaise seo do dhaoine áirithe mar gur rugadar an báire leo agus iad ag foghlaim, ag múineadh agus ag cur teangacha chun cinn. Nach iontach na scéalta atá acu!     The project aims to promote and value bilingualism in primary school through the creation of dual language texts. Both children learning English as an additional language (EAL) and Irish-born children are involved in the project. During the process, EAL children engage in planning, drafting, editing and producing a fi nal draft of a book written in both their home language (L1) and in English (L2). Irish children write their dual language books in both Irish and English. Children are encouraged to write on topics of interest to them and books are illustrated appropriately. Each book contains the same material written in both languages, which enables the transfer of skills across languages. Children can use this opportunity to think and write in their home language, which can be a rare occurrence in an English dominated society. Similarly, Irish-born children are enabled to develop the skills of writing in Irish and to transfer language skills between English and Irish. EAL children who are less competent in their home language can use the opportunity to work with their parents in home language writing. This fosters the involvement of parents, which is essential for effective learning.

    After the books are created, children present and read their books to groups of their peers. They discuss the process of writing the books and are given an opportunity to express themselves through their fi rst language. The project in turn provides future reading material for other language learners in the school and there is also the opportunity to record stories on audio cassette to allow for future reading and listening activities.

    The creation of dual language books promotes bilingualism and encourages children to share their experiences and knowledge of different languages and cultures among family, peers and teachers. The project enables teachers and students alike to accept and acknowledge different languages in the school community. It communicates respect for other cultures and fosters an interest in the language experiences of children. Essentially this project enhances the status of children as language learners and provides them with an opportunity to demonstrate their skills as authors and bilingual language learners.

Féadann na leanaí tairbhe a bhaint as an deis seo chun smaoineamh agus scríobh ina dteanga dhúchais, rud nach féidir leo a dhéanamh go ró-mhinic i sochaí ina bhfuil an Béarla in uachtar. Ar an gcuma céanna cuirtear ar chumas na leanaí a rugadh in Éirinn a gcuid scileanna scríofa sa Ghaeilge a fhorbairt agus scileanna teanga a aistriú idir Béarla agus Gaeilge. Mar thoradh ar an obair seo soláthróidh an tionscadal ábhar léitheoireachta amach anseo d’fhoghlaimeoirí teanga eile sa scoil chomh maith leis an deis scéalta a thaifeadadh ar chloschaiséad le haghaidh tuilleadh gníomhaíochtaí léitheoireachta agus éisteachta.

    Nuair a dhéantar leabhair dhátheangacha cuirtear an dátheangachas chun cinn. Spreagtar leanaí chun a gcuid taithí agus a gcuid eolais ar theangacha agus ar chultúir éagsúla aa chomhroinnt i measc a gclann, a gcomhpháirtithe agus a múinteoirí. Cuireann an tionscadal ar chumas na múinteoirí agus na ndaltaí araon glacadh le teangacha éagsúla i bpobal na scoile agus aitheantas a thabhairt dóibh. Tugann sé le fi os go bhfuil meas ar chultúir eile agus cothaíonn sé suim san eispéiris teanga a bhíonn ag leanaí. Is é bun agus barr an tionscadail go gcuirtear le stádas leanaí mar fhoghlaimeoirí teanga agus go

    dtugtar an deis dóibh a gcuid scileanna a thaispeáint mar údair agus mar fhoghlaimeoirí teanga dátheangacha.

  • The objective of ClubLeabhar.com is to motivate people in Ireland and in other countries around the world to read Irish books, and to give them an opportunity to share their opinions on the texts. In general, only one or two hundred copies of published Irish books are sold per annum and it is the club’s target to signifi cantly increase the sales of Irish books.

    It only takes a moment to register with the club at www.clubleabhar.com and there is no fee. There is a focus on a new book every month and members are able to discuss the work on the online forum. Individuals can remain as members of the online community but the club also aims to motivate members to come together once a month in various centres around Ireland and abroad to discuss the book of the month.

    It is the club’s policy to avoid books which are very complicated and academic. Priority is given to novels and collections of short stories, but from time to time other genres are featured. There is a mixture of newly published books and classics which are still in print.

    The comprehensive glossaries of the most diffi cult words and phrases in the books, are an invaluable support to those members who are learning Irish.

    ClubLeabhar.com also makes available, a list of existing Irish-language book clubs in Ireland and abroad, and the advice and support that is available to members if they are interested in setting up their own book club. There is also an online list of book shops which sell Irish books and links to sites such as litriocht.com and siopa.ie which are easy for members of ClubLeabhar.com to use if they want to discuss or buy any books.

  • EuroCatering is a language learning tool for trainees and workers in the Hotel and Catering industry based on the analysis of trainees’ linguistic and cultural needs while on placement abroad in the hospitality sector. The end product is web-based, and trainees and workers in the Hotel and Catering industry, who wish to undertake a work placement abroad, may access this professional language learning programme in seven languages, free of charge.

    The partnership team was composed of language and vocational teachers, and administrators in vocational training institutions from seven different EU countries: Belgium, France, Ireland, Norway, Slovenia, Spain and the UK. The online language learning programme is available in Dutch, English, French, Galician, Norwegian, Slovenian and Spanish, and contains a professional glossary of 1,500 restaurant and culinary terms in written, audio and graphics form. It is a complete pedagogical tool which allows for self-instructed or teacher-guided learning. Exercises are included to reinforce the learning, along with a video

    of pertinent gestures for restaurant and kitchen service and a glossary of cultural orientation facts for working in the seven countries. The programme, which is freely available to all upon registration online, is linked to a learning platform, Moodle, with open-ended links for blogging, using chatroom, forums and YouTube.

    Jury commentsAdded value comes from the wide variety of languages on offer, including lesser-used languages such as Galician. It had very clear objectives and results and is now being implemented successfully…Motivation is very strong from users of the new resource who have found it user-friendly and relevant to their vocational needs, both language-wise and in the cultural notes…Strong motivation also from the resource designers and teachers who are now able to make use of this new resource as a basis for their courses…The nature of the material is such that it is used on open days and helps present an appealing side of language learning…EuroCatering provides an attractive resource to non-academic, vocationally-

    oriented language learners both for independent study on Moodle and for classroom based sessions. It makes an appropriate use of technology, including the possibility of learners downloading fi les onto their iPod while on placements abroad…Interestingly, cultural fi les distinguish between Belgian and French contexts and between English and Irish.

    The logainm.ie project (2007-2010) was initiated by FIONTAR, Dublin City University’s Irish-medium teaching and research unit, in collaboration with the Placenames Branch of the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, who also part-funded the project.

    The principal objective of Phase I of the project was to make Irish placenames that had been approved by the Placenames Branch, available through the internet. The outcomes of the project will increase access to language learning and teaching resources related to Irish placenames among the general public, and has provided a database management system for the staff of the Placenames Branch. Educational resources, mapping tools and sound fi les were developed and added to the website during Phase II.

    The Logainm.ie resource can be used by educators, learners, those involved in research, linguists, the media and of course by the Placenames Branch. It is a public resource for Irish people at home and abroad, and for all those who appreciate the rich heritage of Irish placenames.

    FIONTAR created this public resource in close collaboration with the Placenames Branch, whose primary function is to research the correct Irish-language form of placenames throughout Ireland and to publish them for offi cial use. The project provides access to the entire work on placenames which has been carried out by the Irish State since its foundation.

    Work on logainm.ie is ongoing and more placenames, sound fi les and new interactive features will be added to the website.

    Bunachar Logainmneacha na hÉireann: Placenames Database of IrelandFIONTAR (Ollscoil Chathair Bhaile Átha Cliath)

  • This project ran from January to April 2010 with a group of seventeen fi rst-year students of German at the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown. The student group comprised a mixture of school leavers and mature students who ranged in age from 17 to 47. Approximately half the group were beginners in the language while the remainder had studied German to Leaving Certifi cate level. Students were enrolled on a degree course in either International Business or in General Business and were taking German as one of six modules in the second semester of their fi rst year. The student body contained a wide range of cultural backgrounds and eight students had a language other than English as their fi rst language.

    At the beginning of the project, students set up an individual blog using www.blogger.com. The blog was used to cover topics which would be included in an oral examination at the end of the semester i.e. myself, my home, hobbies, holidays, college life and work. For each task,

    students were required to make a simple text posting to their blog and/or to use an application specifi ed by the instructor to create materials to upload to or embed in their blog. The following applications were used for this purpose: PowerPoint, Voki, Voice Thread and Movie Maker. Instructor feedback was provided via the blog comment function following each task and students were encouraged to act on this feedback and alter their blog postings accordingly.

    The project was particularly innovative in the use of technologies which enable learners to record their voice and to integrate sound with video, images and text. The use of an individualised blog catered to the diverse needs of what was a particularly diverse group of students. The comment function on the blog allowed the instructor to provide individual feedback in a timely fashion and to monitor how the students acted upon it and integrated their feedback into their work.

    The aim of this project was to enhance Spanish language learning at St Laurence’s through a whole-school project centred on the infl uence of the piñata on Spanish/Mexican culture. It was also intended that all children in the school would experience a true piñata breaking event. To achieve this, the project coordinators set about putting a differentiated programme in place for the various class levels. Project work, group-work, art and craft, music and drama were all used to facilitate the children’s learning. Particular emphasis was placed upon the use of Spanish as the medium through which the learning occurred. The origins and meaning of the varying piñata customs were researched and studied. Following this, the children worked together to construct piñatas. These were put on display in the school hall where they remained until the annual Spanish week in the school. During this week workshops were held for all classes where each child was given an opportunity to play the piñata game and enjoy the treats.

    The personnel involved in setting up this project included the school principal, the

    visiting Spanish teacher, a Comenius Assistant and the class teachers.

    This project has been added to the school plan for Spanish and it is now an annual event.

    Jury commentsThe children used their creativity and imagination in making the piñatas…Knowledge of the Spanish language/Mexican culture were acquired through formal teaching and arts and crafts, and most importantly, through participation in the breaking of the piñata celebrations…The children very much appear to enjoy the Spanish class. The younger children love going home with a sweet/trinket. All children look forward to the celebration particularly when the teachers get a chance to join in and are blindfolded…The signifi cance and history of the piñata is exploited to the full by embracing the tradition of fi estas in Spanish/Mexican culture in a celebratory fashion in a school setting. Imagination was required by the school principal to spearhead this project as well as the obvious creative talents of the visiting Spanish teacher.

    Language Trap is an innovative language learning video game for Leaving Certifi cate German students. The game aims to immerse students in an interactive game world that seamlessly blends language learning with motivating game play. Through the use of personalisation techniques and technologies, Language Trap uniquely tailors the learning experience to each player. Each student is presented with learning content suitable for their abilities and is supported with guidance and feedback that is tailored around their experiences.

    Through the use of an interactive dialogue system the game allows students to practice guiding and interacting with relevant German conversations.Game features:• Synthesised speech used to aid aural comprehension• Adaptive dialogue diffi culty• Tailored feedback, guidance and

    encouragement• Students and teachers involved in the design of the game• Learning content relevant to the curriculum• Free-to-play for language students

    The evaluation of the project took place between October 2009 and May 2010 with fi ve secondary schools in Dublin and Wicklow. In total over 80 students played the game and provided their feedback through questionnaires.

    The project has shown that there is a desire among language students aged 16-18 for highly interactive game-based learning. Considering the familiarity of the target group with computer games (>75% have played educational computer games), it is an encouraging result to fi nd that the students are eager and willing to pursue game-based learning.

    Although this project focuses on German language learning, the game design and technologies involved can be applied to any language. It is hoped that the project will continue to contribute to research in the area of personalised educational games.

    Chruthaigh an tionscadal go bhfuil éileamh i measc mac léinn teanga idir 16-18 mbliana d’aois ar fhoghlaim trí chluiche a bhfuil a lán idirghníomhaíocht ag gabháil leis.   • SpEakWise combines new technologies e.g. WebCT, Moodle, Survey Monkey, and video-conferencing, with more traditional approaches to teaching and learning. The aim is to raise cultural awareness and pragmatic linguistic competence. Third-level students develop their intercultural communication skills through the target language in partnership with students following the same course in another European university. The project, which was awarded a Learning Innovation Grant from TCD in 2007, was initiated by Dr Gillian Martin in the Department of Germanic Studies, TCD, in collaboration with two colleagues, Dr Helen O’Sullivan and Dr Breffni O’Rourke. Since October 2007, the course has run in parallel, for one semester per year, both in TCD and in a German (University of Hildesheim) or Austrian (University of Vienna) partner university. Participants in TCD are primarily fi nal-year students of Business Studies and German; their counterparts in Austria and Germany come from a range of disciplines.

    Opportunities for authentic intercultural communication in the language learning

    classroom are limited. SpEakWise addresses this limitation by enabling students to explore and test, in real time, theories of intercultural communication, and to engage in problem-solving and decision-making in the target language. The course materials, authored by Dr Helen O’Sullivan, encourage students to consider their attitudes to other cultures, to examine their own implicit cultural values and to refl ect on how culture shapes how we use language and how we behave in certain settings. The individual and team activities include non-participant observation, critical incident analysis, discourse completion tests, refl ective journal writing and a video-conference negotiation. Each week students in TCD and the partner university work on an activity, post their comments to Moodle and then engage in real-time discussion. Activities and discussions are in both English and German.

    SpEakWise has evolved since its inception and will continue to be responsive to new technologies and to the feedback received by course participants. This process of continuous feedback, in turn, enables the

    Jury commentsThe more advanced students were trained so that they could be English language student teachers for those individuals who could not be accommodated immediately. If this strategy had not been used, many of the potential course participants would have been lost…Positive participation and positive feedback from the project have encouraged learners to continue with their language studies and progress into further or higher education. The project co-ordinator and teachers have benefi ted from the high level of commitment and enthusiasm displayed by the course participants… The holistic approach adopted in Co. Laois VEC to the learning of English can continuously be fi ne-tuned to facilitate the successful integration of foreign-nationals into life and work in Ireland.

    anti-racism and intercultural initiatives, an artistic endeavour with the Arts Offi ce at Laois Co. Council and a community radio documentary series entitled How to Learn English in Ireland. ESOL learners also avail of the centre’s Peer Mentoring Programme where the more advanced English language learners (Volunteer Peer Mentors) offer an immediate support network for incoming students and facilitate English language conversation classes. Feedback from participants involved in activities indicated that learning English was the fi rst and most fundamental step towards involvement in their local communities and towards full and equal participation in Irish society.

    The overall purpose of this project is to respect and embrace all learners accessing the centre, to take practical steps to promote language learning, and to cater for cultural diversity. The project gives all learners and tutors the opportunity to refl ect on the intercultural dimension to Adult Education and highlights how equality, diversity and cultural difference can be positively embraced throughout Co. Laois VEC.

    The aims of this project are to support English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) learners, from various ethnic backgrounds, to break down language and communication barriers and give them the necessary language skills to integrate more effectively into Irish society. The project also aims to provide all learners and tutors with a platform to assert their culture and individuality with confi dence.

    In addition to attending classes, ESOL learners and tutors are invited to participate in a variety of activities that take place in the Adult Learning Centre throughout the year. Activities either target the specifi c language needs of ESOL learners or have a whole-centre approach which caters for the language needs of all learners and tutors accessing the centre. All activities are approached with enthusiasm, the overall aim being to encourage as many people as possible to participate.

    SCENARIO is a new bilingual (English - German), peer-reviewed, online journal, bridging the fi elds of arts and foreign-/second-language education.

    The concept of language teaching as a science became an accepted view in the course of the 20th century. In contrast, SCENARIO aims at promoting foreign – and second-language teaching and learning as a form of art, and ultimately works towards a performative turn in modern language education.

    The journal responds to the needs of language teachers, scholars, theatre professionals and drama- and theatre-in-education specialists, for a platform within which they can engage in interdisciplinary and intercultural dialogue. SCENARIO readers are introduced to innovative concepts of drama-based language teaching and learning, and models of teaching practice which can be adapted to different target groups and institutional settings.

    The editors intend to stimulate the

    subject debate in the area of (theatre) arts and foreign-/second- language education• through an extensive research bibliography on SCENARIO’s homepage • by making interested colleagues aware of new publications, upcoming events and hot links • and also through book publications based on selected contributions to SCENARIO. The members of the 16 strong Advisory Board represent language teaching institutions in fi ve EU countries in addition to Canada.   • The aim of this project was to create a European language game which promoted Irish as a European language along with French, German, Italian and Spanish, in a fun way. The game, developed as a ‘mini-company’ by a Transition Year group, combines both language and cultural education in an interesting and fun method of learning. It has three different levels which allow it to be used by different age groups i.e. Level 1 is for primary school children, Level 2 is for secondary school students who are revising for exams, and Level 3 is for business people and tourists who are visiting a European country. The students also felt that Level 3 could be used by senior citizen groups who may want to learn a few key phrases of a European language as well as fun facts about a country and its culture. A unique aspect of the game is that each of the cards was hand-designed by the production director. Furthermore, Euromazing Languages is the only game on the market which promotes Irish on an equal level with other, more widely-spoken, European languages.

    Jury commentsThese language games (Irish, Spanish, French, German and Italian) bring fun into language learning. There are clear objectives and expected results ... The development of the game for Irish refl ects the added value of the project since there are no other such resources for Irish…The colourful and artistic presentation of the game, at three learning levels, should motivate learners and teachers. Students, parents and teachers from primary schools where modern European languages are taught have purchased the product, indicating enthusiasm and motivation to learn…This original game…has involved the students concerned in developing a range of skills including business and management skills, the use of technology, and language teaching and learning skills. The project is creative and original in terms of the product itself and in aiming it at different groups of people – students, people travelling abroad and senior citizens who wish to learn languages…The cards also include some basic cultural information relating to each of the languages in question…This product is sustainable and could easily be

    further developed e.g. by developing more questions and cards, targeting a more advanced audience etc.

Ba í ‘mionchuideachta’ de chuid grúpa idirbhliana a d’fhorbair an cluiche seo ina gceanglaítear oideachas teanga agus oideachas cultúrtha i modh foghlama suimiúil spraíúil. Gabhann trí leibhéal difriúla leis an gcluiche ar shlí gur féidir le haoisghrúpaí éagsúla é a úsáid, mar seo a leanas: Leibhéal 1 do dhaltaí bunscoile, Leibhéal 2 do dhaltaí meánscoile atá ag staidéar i gcomhair scrúduithe agus Leibhéal 3 do lucht gnó agus do thurasóirí atá ag tabhairt cuairte ar thír Eorpach. He is recognised worldwide as a leading proponent of the theory of language learner autonomy, and has been a driving force behind many signifi cant language education initiatives nationally and internationally. He is an outstanding scholar, compelling communicator, and a prolifi c and successful publisher. His work has infl uenced and inspired language students, teachers, teacher trainers and policy-makers across the world, and it continues to do so. Professor Little’s many accomplishments, his rigorous intellect, industry, imagination and clear-sightedness, combine to make him one of Ireland’s, and Europe’s, chief language ambassadors.

    Dr Konstantin DoulamisDepartment of ClassicsUniversity College Cork

    Dr Konstantin Doulamis, a native Greek speaker, was educated in Classics at the Universities of Cyprus, Oxford, and Exeter. Since 2004 he has been a Lecturer in the Classics Department at University College Cork. His qualifi cation for the post of Language Ambassador rests mainly upon his work teaching Ancient Greek at the annual UCC International Summer School and his successful promotion of Modern Greek in the University curriculum and beyond. But his linguistic skills encompass, beyond his extraordinary grasp of English, fl uency also in French, Spanish, and Italian.

    Art Ó SúilleabháinIonad Oideachais Mhaigh Eo

    Art Ó Súilleabháin is the Director of Mayo Education Centre and has worked tirelessly for the Irish language for over 25 years. He has committed a huge amount of voluntary time and energy for schools and teachers, developed teaching resources and promoted Irish to all age groups through both writing and broadcasting. Although not a native speaker, he became a passionate proponent of Irish since learning it as a ten year old in Galway. Later in 1983 he played a major role in establishing the Gaelscoil in Castlebar and served as Chair of the Board for many years. His newest project www.bladair.com is a blog as Gaeilge for pupils, teachers and the wider community.

    Neasa Ní DhomhnaillColáiste an Phiarsaigh

    Neasa has been promoting English, Irish, French, Italian and Latin in an all-Irish secondary school environment for more than 30 years. She was responsible, with the help of the PPLI (Post-Primary Languages Initiative), for ensuring that Italian became a subject available to students at Coláiste an Phiarsaigh. Neasa has worked to create a wide range of teaching resources over the years to fi t in with teaching languages in an all-Irish environment. She also started the tradition of school trips so that pupils gained an awareness of the languages they were learning. As well as this, she does volunteer work teaching English to people who have recently arrived in Ireland, and helping them to integrate into society. Over the years she has taken under her wing, trainee teachers, both Irish and foreign, and helped them to develop their teaching skills. She is a noble and knowledgeable person with a passion for languages and she succeeds in transferring the same interest and love of language learning to other people.

Tá aitheantas air ar fud an domhain mar dhuine a thacaíonn le féinriar an fhoghlaimeora agus is eisean atá faoi deara teacht chun cinn mórán tionscnamh in oideachas teanga sa tír seo agus thar lear. Scoláire den scoth agus cumarsáidí láidir is ea é agus foilsitheoir rathúil ina theannta sin. Tá sé ag obair mar Léachtóir i Roinn an Léinn Chlasaicigh i gColáiste Ollscoile Chorcaí ó 2004 i leith. Cháiligh sé mar Ambasadóir Teanga na Bliana go mór mór de bharr a chuid oibre i múineadh na Gréigise Arsa i Scoil Samhraidh Idirnáisiúnta Bhliantúil a reáchtáiltear i gCholáiste Ollscoile Chorcaí agus de bharr gur éirigh leis an Nua-Ghréigis a chur chun cinn i gcuraclam na hOllscoile agus níos faide anonn.     Is é stiúrthóir Ionad Oideachais Mhaigh Eo é Art Ó Súilleabháin. Tá sé ag obair gan stad gan staonadh ar son na Gaeilge le breis is 25 bliana anuas. Tá méid ollmhór ama agus fuinnimh caite aige go deonach ar mhaithe le scoileanna agus múinteoirí. Tá acmhainní múinte forbartha aige agus tá an Ghaeilge curtha chun cinn aige i measc gach aoisghrúpa lena chuid scríbhneoireachta agus craoltóireachta. Cé nach cainteoir dúchais é thosaigh sé ar an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn le díograis ó d’fhoghlaim sé í nuair a bhí sé ina bhuachaill 10 mbliana d’aois i nGaillimh. Ina dhiaidh sin, sa bhliain 1983, chabhraigh sé go mór chun Gaelscoil i gCaisleán an Bharraigh a bhunú agus d’fhóin sé mar chathaoirleach an Bhoird ar feadh na mblianta fada.
