Detailed Instructions – Classroom Use: I. For the Teacher

A. What is the מצוה of סיפור יציאת מצרים? 1. The telling over of what happened by יציאת מצרים in order to instill 'אמונת ה in the child. 2. The word הגדה comes from the root word גד which, according to the Gra, means sinew. Just as the

sinew connects the skeleton, the main frame of the body, to the muscles and organs, the הגדה connects a Yid to Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

3. The purpose of giving over the הגדה is to connect the child’s neshama to Hakadosh Baruch Hu through אמונה חושית.

B. Why is the סיפור יציאת בצרים such an important מצוה? 1. The question becomes stronger when we compare this מצוה to other מצוות:

a. The מצוה of חינוך הבנים is written in the Torah only once. The mitzvah of ור יציאת מצריםסיפ is written once in פרשת בא, in, פרשת וארא and in the הגדה. תורה •

o למען תזכר את יום צאתך מארץ מצרים כל ימי חייך o למען תספר באזני בנך ובן בנך את אשר התעללתי במצרים

הגדה in the פסוקים •o ואמרת אליו בעבור זה עשה ה' לי בצאתי ממצרים o הוציאנו ה' ממצרים מבית עבדים ואמרת אליו בחזק יד

b. The experience of מעמד הר סיניand מתן תורה is included in the שש זכירות but there is no specific מצוה to tell our children about it. By mitzrayim, there is a specific mitzvah to tell it over to our children. There is a המסור of בן אחר בן that have been told the story.

c. There is also no specific day to tell our children about מתן תורה. We are specifically commanded by ליל הסדר to tell over the story of בשעה שמצה ומרור מונחים לפניו :יצירת בצרים.

2. If we look at the פסוק in ת באפרש , a question arises: פרשת בא פבוק ב "למען תספר באזני בנך ובן בנך את אשר התעללתי במצרים... וידעתם כי אני ה'"Why is למען in singular and וידעתם is in plural?

a. Rabbi Yehoshua m’Belz: when they went out of mitzrayim, the only children who weren’t there at yetzias mitzrayim were moshe’s children as it says “וישמע יתרו’ – Yisro heard and brought moshe’s wife and children toward bnei yisrael. את אשת משה ואת שני בניה ויבא יתרו אל" משה אל המדבר

b. The first year of סיפור יצירת מצרים, the mitzvah was only applicable to Moshe and his children. c. When a person is מצווה to do something, Hashem gives him a special siyata dishmaya

Where do we see the siyata dishmaya in telling over סיפור יציאת מצרים? When Moshe gave over the story to his children, he put the כח into all future דורות to do so. He gave us the ability to instill 'אמונת ה in our children. כדי שיהא כח לכל הדורות להנחיל אמונת ה'

3. Rav Shamshon Rephael Hirsch asks “why is יציאת מצרים different than מתן מורה and קריעת ים סוף? a. At the moment of שראל בני י ,יציאת מצרים became a nation. Until then, in mitzrayim, we were

under the rule of another nation; we did not have the ability to further our own needs and desires. When we left, we were free to follow our own rule. Thus, we received a “constitution” – the Torah with laws and rules to follow.

II. For the Student

Go through the timeline from בריאת העולם through יציאת מצרים using the פסוקים of the הגדה as reference. Seeing the timeline in this perspective, we see how every point is intricately designed to fulfill the promises of ברית בין הבתרים. This realization leads us to see והקבה בצילנו .that Hashem is constantly with us and everything that happens is part of His Master Plan ,מידם

A. בריאת העולם 1. For whom did Hashem create the wordl?

Rashi on Possuk Aleph in Beraishis – בשביל תורה ובשביל ישרעל

B. אבינו אברהם חיי - אבותינו היו זרה עבודה עובדימתחלה 1. Who was the first person to know Hashem? Avraham 2. We are praising Hashem for choosing Avraham and allowing us to know about Hashem.

Avraham made people realize that avoda zara is הבל and they must follow Hashem. Because of his influence, many people became גרים; they are like his תלמידים. He instilled in all future generations the knowledge that there is a Hashem and the ability to teach others that there is a Hashem. This is why we say אלוקנו ואלוקי אברהם.

3. By יציאת מצרים, most of the Yidden were עובדי עבודה זרה and intermingled among the goyim. Hashem sent Moshe Rabbeinu to separate us from the מצרים. Hashem made us into an עם .סגולה

C. חיי יצחק -ואתן לו את יצחק 1. Hashem chose יצחק over ישמעאל and gave him ירושת הארץ.

D. יעקב חיי -מצרימה ירדו ובניו ויעקב

1. The going down to מצרים was the beginning of the formulation of Klal Yisrael. E. ברית בין הבתריםב ברוך שומר הבטחתו לישראל... כמה שאמר לאברהם אבינו

1. We thank Hashem for two things: Hashem promised ארבה את זרעך and ירוש הארץ And כי ביצחק יקרה לך זרע

the only way Hsahem will keep the – עקב תשמעו את המשפטים הרלה ושמע ה'... את הברית .2promise is if we keep the Torah.

3. What does it mean that Hashem wll only keep the promise if we are good? Won’t Hashem anyway keep the promises to Avraham?

The promises of זרע and ארץ could also refer to Yishmael. But Hashem did a חסד and chose the בני יצחק to receive these promises because we keep the Torah.

F. לכלותנו והקב"ה מצילנו מידם עלינו עומדים ודור דור שבכל ולנו.... אלא לאבותינו שעמדה היאו 1. The promise of the ברית בין הבתרים brought us out of Mitzrayim. This promise is still helping us

today in every צרה of גלות throughout the דורות. Hashem showed Avraham all the future גלוות and promised that He would stay with us throughout.

2. Here we see the extent of Hsahem’s love for Avraham. Hashem doesn’t get rid of the אויבים, rather he saves us from their hands. He does it only because He loves עם ישראל. In every

generation, Hsahem brings us an אויב just so He can save us from them. The whole world should see that we are a special nation that Hashem loves.

3. Note: A teacher can give over this חיזוק to her students to support them throughout the צרות that are going on in our days -the global and private צרות. They will know and feel that Hashem will save them.

G. ארמי עובד אבי... וירד מצרימה... ויהי שם לגוי גדול עצום ורב 1. Paroh said “כל הבן היאורה תשליחהו”. Lavan wanted to לאבד, to get rid of Yaakov; he wanted to

take everything away from him: his family and wealth. Because he wanted it so strongly, Hsahem considered it as if he really did so. מחשבה כמעשה. Hsahem saved Yaakov in the זכות of the promise to אברהם.

2. Everything Hashem did in Yakov’s life was to bring him down to MItzrayim. H. וירד מצרים... ויגר שם

1. The shevatim and Yaakov did not want to live in mitzrayim. They intended to stay in mitzrayim just until the רעב was over. Hashem told Yaakov that he must stay in mitzrayim because of ברית .they remained there to live ,בין הבתרים

I. במתי מעט 1. They went down with 70 people. This is not מעט inherently, only in comparison to the amount

of people that left מצרים by יציאת מצרים. J. ויהי שם לגוי.. גדול עצום ורב

1. Am Yisrael became a very special nation in mitzrayim. Usually, when people move to a new country, they become lost within that country; they take over the culture and religion of their surrounding nation and the nation gets smaller. Bnei Yisrael remained apart in Mitzrayim. They kept their identity through “language, clothing, and religion”. They became a huge nation apart from their host nation. They remained different even as they grew.

K. ויענונו... ויתן עלינו עבודה קשה 1. The mitzriim became upset that Klal Yisarel remained apart and grew. They tried to harm Klal

Yisrael by giving them work that breaks the body and placed רשעים over them to work them to exhaustion. By doing different מלאכות.

2. Pharoah called all the mitriim and the yidden to work. The first day, everyone including pharaoh worked. The yidden tried very hard to please pharaoh and they worked extremely hard. Slowly, over seeral days, the mitzriim stopped working and only the Yidden remained working. Pharoah demanded the same output of bricks each day as the first day when the YIdden overexherted themselves.

3. Usually when a person works for a king, he doesn’t mind the work because it is special for the king. Generally, he gets honor or rewards for doing so. The mitzriim made the YIdden feel lowly and degraded; this made the work even harder. David Hamelech davened in Tehillim not to give him the יסורים of being subservient to a נבל, to someone who would degrade him.

4. The mian difficulty of שעבוד מצרים was the evil and degrading manner with which they were treated.

L. ונצעק אל ה' אלקי אבותינו וישמע ד' את קולנו 1. Klal Yisrael turned to Hashem out of desperation and cried that Hashem should bring the גאולה

in the zechus of the avos. Rav Shimshon Pincus says that it wasn’t a verbal tefillah. It was a cry that came straight -ונצעק .2

from the heart; this type of Tefillah is צעקה. Out of desperation, they cried out. M. וירא את ענינו ואת עמלינו ואת לחצנו N. ובזרע נטויה שתים ויוצאני ה' ממצרים ביד חזקה ובזרע נטויה במרא גדול ובאותות ובמופתים ביד חזקה שתים
