Rabbi Meir Lebush Malbim (nineteenth century) suggests that Isaac went out every afternoon to the place where an angel had appeared to Hagar, Be’er Lachai Ro’i, to meditate at a place that had become associated with sanctity. Thus ‘the field’ where Isaac went for inspiration was in Be’er Lachai Ro’i, the place that had been sanctified, first, by his father’s concubine. Although Hagar was not Isaac’s mother, Isaac acknowledged the spiritual vision that she had received and he wanted to connect with it. A contrasting explanation is offered by Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai in the Zohar. Although the verse says that Isaac came from Be’er Lachai Ro’i, the field where he practiced his meditation was elsewhere. The Zohar associates it with ‘the field’ mentioned earlier in the sidra namely the field with the Cave of Machpelah, where Sarah was buried. There, says the Zohar, Isaac perceived a perfume what seemed to him, a perfume from Paradise, and felt the closeness of the Shechina. In other words, Isaac went to his mother’s grave in order to collect his thoughts before making the most important decision of his life: his marriage. Throughout Jewish history whenever Jews have faced life-challenging circumstances, they have gone, if at all possible, to the graves of their parents to pray and be inspired to make the right decision. The oldest Jewish post biblical work, Megilat Taanit (the Scroll of Fasts) writes that 25 Marcheshvan was a semi Yom Tov. It commemorated the day in appr. 350 BCE, when the Jews were able to settle in Shomron having previously been excluded by the Cutiim (Samaritans.)

For calendrical purposes the Jewish month is calculated to start at the time of the molad, lit. ‘birth’ when the new moon is born. This is the moment when the moon becomes invisible, between the end of the old month and the beginning of the new. The real time varies slightly from month to month. For calendar calculations an average time is used and in many communities this time is announced or communicated when the Blessing of the New Month takes place. For the month of KISLEV the molad will be on Wednesday 11th November at 6.35 pm and 11 chalakim.
