Troops to Teachers (m) was established in 1994 as a Department of Defense program. It isfunded by the U.S. Department of Education and is managed by the Defense Activity forNon-Traditional Education Support (DANTES)in Pensacola, Florida.

The Center for Recruitment and Retention based at the NC Department of Public Instruction, isthe headquarters for the North Carolina TTT program.

The primary objective of TTTis to help recruit quality teachers for schools that serve low-incomefamilies throughout the United States. TTT helps relieve the teacher shortages, especially inmath, science, special education and other high-need subject areas, and assists militarypersonnel in making a successful transition to a second career in teaching.

TTT provides a $5,000.00 stipend toassist military personnel who are:(1) reti red,(2) within one year of retiring with an

approved retirement date, or(3) honorably discharged with 6 or

more years of service and willing toobligate in the active reserves ona three-year contract.

Additional stipend requirements are:• The stipend may only be used to reimburse costs

associated with approved teacher licensure programs.• A bachelor's degree is a prerequisite for funding

education programs in academic areas.• The degree must also be from a regionally

accredited college or university.• TTT participants are obligated to teach for three

years in a high-need school district.

Participants hired to teach in a school where 50% or more of the students are on free or reducedcost lunches or the school's Individual Disability Education Act (IDEA) percentage meets the criteriaspecified by the Department of Education are eligible for a $10,000.00 bonus. Acceptance of anymonies obligates the Troops to Teachers participant to teach for three years in such a high-need school.
