This years rally was attended byJohn Thornhill, Robert Sheridan,Kate Shersdan, Pat Fysh, DaveWeinstock and Chris Fysh for theduration of the rally.

ln addltion we were joined byDave Peek on Friday night, Daveand Pam Garmen on Saturday.and Mike Duckett on Sunday.

John trailed his Tiki 21 , 'Felix',down from Coventry and we as-sembled it on Friday afternoon.Robert and Kate sailed theirHinamoa over from Portsm outhHarbour and Pat, Chris and I pro-vided our Heavenly Twins. Elara,as a base boat. I would Iike topoi n t out th at there was a 1 00%improvement on the num ber ofW harram designed boats attend-ing over the previous year!

The rally staded on the Fridaynight when we aII met at HannibalsRestaufant for a meal and a chat.Then on Saturday we sailed fromLangstone Sailing Club to EastHead where we anchored Elara,and different crews sailed the twoW harram designs around. Felixdeveloped a mast step problemafter the shroud Iashings came off.W e alI applied our best brains tothe problem and m ade a tem po-rary repair, but the m ast headblock for the main halyards wasalso broken and sailing was re-stricted to the Hinamoa for the restof the day. That evening we wentashore at East Head for a Barbe-CUe.

On Sunday morning l went to thetop of Felix's mast in the boson'schair to replace the broken mastblock. W e aII had breakfast aboardElara. W e sailed from East Headto Priory Bay on the Isle of W hite.

There was just enough sea breezeto give us a good sail across theSolent.

John was delighted with the sailset that he was now getting andwas going very fast. W e did havea minor mishap on Esara when weIost the dinghy that we were tow-ing. I got in to the dinghy to attacha new palnter and the wash from acontainer ship set m e adrift. ElaraIooked pretty ugly when she camestraight at me at speed. After aIate Iunch, Robed and Kate sailedto Podsmouth from Priory Bay.The rest of us sailed for the Chich-ester Harbour entrance but endedup motoring back as the seabreeze died. W e returned toLangstone Sailing Club and putthe boats on the m oorings overnight.

The following day l helped Johnput the boat on the trailer ready forhim to tow hom e. W e had attlearned a Iot from sailing the boatsand sharing our knowledge. W eenjoyed the hot, sunny weatherand the good company; and arenow looking fofward to meetingevery one in Plym outh.

W e now use Peel-ply for almostevery application and the aboveexample we take to its naturalconclusion: On the hull panels ofour Tiki 38, after dry fitting andtrimm ing, we now coat the ''inside''side with epoxy and Peel-ply thewhole panel. W hen ready, we tearoff the Peel-ply, coat the stringersand bulkhead edges with epoxy asper norm al gluing technique sim-pIy screw the panel in place andclean up. No need for marking outthe stringers and bulkhead posi-tions on the panel and then sand-ing between the Iines. There are four pieces ofDotlglas Fir (25mm x 1 2mm)across for strength with drainholes in front of each. Then fitsome hatches in the top with elas-tic and toggles so you don't losethem . This provides quite a Iot ofstowage on deck but of course itwill get wet. I keep mooring warps,boat hook, sail ties and the mastfoot gaiter in here. The com pass ismounted on a duplicate hatchcover.

The compass is the type used ondlnghies such as Lasers and Igenerally use the offset marks justas in a dinghy. The two offset val-ues can be set on counters On ei-ther side of the com pass.

Another thing l keep here is awedge to use with the outboard. Ichanged to a new outboard(Yamaha to Johnson) and onething 1 didn't check was the tran-som angle. The Johnson 4 doesn'tfit on a verlical transom . Thewedge is on a Ianyard so 1 don'tIose it or need three hands when IIift the engine out.

stayed there 2 months sailing onlyfrom Pomichet to Camaret andpreparing the trip,W e Ieft Camaret the 1 6th of Au-gust with my two sisters and m eon board. Gulf of Biscay was verykind with us, so we arrived easilyin Cerdeira, north west of Spain af-ter having fished our first nicetuna.

I sailed along the coast of Spainand Portugal and arrived in Seixalnear Lisboa in the beginning ofSeptem ber. A lot of cruising boatswere trapped In Lisboa waiting forbetter weather. l was too. Firsttime l set sails for Madeira theweather got worst and I had tocom e back to Lisboa after 3 nightsat sea and my jib ripped. Tendays later l Ieft again and arrivedin Porto Santo (Madeira) 5 daysIater. It was my first overnlghtnavigation single-handed. I wasquiet happy! There I've met Mal-colm, a PCA member sailing on acat. From Madeira I went to Ca-naries Islands with a very nicestop in Salvages Islands between.

From Canaries I set sails the 6thDecember to cross the Atlantic. A1-though the sea was quiet roughthis year it was a easy and quietfast trip, always downwind. I ar-rived in French Guyana 3 weeksIater. Thls was the harder job asm y bloody outboard was out. there

Reliving the Bastille Day at seaQ? Ou est Madame Guillotine

were strong squalls or no wind andcurrent on this coast is verystrong. I moored in Mahury's riverand enjoyed very much Guyana.

From there I sailed to the Carlb-bean, up to Guadeloupe. I had tobe back in France in June so I IeftGuadeloupe at the end of April,heading straight to Pomichet -South Bretagne. It was quite aIong crossing far more difficultthan the first one, although I hadno big trouble with my Tiki. Apartfrom a iot of variables and lightwinds I had a few gales, especially4 days with wlnd force 7-9. Thecat behaved very well though Iworried, unnecessarily, about therudders. l didn't have one but l'mconvinced that a Para-anchorwould have been useful and thatthe Tiki 26 could endure heavlerweather with it.

I arrived in Pom ichet after 45 days

at sea and enjoyed a Iot findingagain family and friends. l've beenver'y happy with this ''around theNorth Atlantic'' trip and I believe noother boats could have given meso m uch for that amount of m oney.

W e are about 1 0 M South of Cadizin a place called Sancti Petri. W ehave been here five days and arehaving great difficulty decidlng toleave - particularly as the wind out-side is bang on the nose. The en-try rem inded m e of Brittany withIeading marks through rocks.Once inside you have the W altonback waters as they m ust havebeen in the 1 930s.

W e have been very well Iooked af-ter by a Iocal member, SantiagoGarcia-cubillana, who found us inGibraltar and told us to hop in.You will gather that this is the yearof the big drag South. W e hope toreach Culatra but the winds havebeen very contrary. The first 1 001'..1 were fine but the Costa de1 SoIIs a real drag.

Glbraltar was better than we ex-pected - keep the monkeys butthey have a very fine cave upthere. W e holed up in Tarifa whilea westerly blew and really enjoyedour 3 days at anchor particularlyafter 6 days in Gibraltar marinas.W hile in Gibraltar we m ade the bigdecision to buy an 8hp engine.W e put it off for a Iong time but fi-nally decided. Luckily we tookalong a tape m easure and discov-ered it wouldn't fit. Nor would any-thing else in Gibradtar (haven't triedHonda or Mariner yet) so the Maltasoldiers on. Jen Ioves it and I mustadmit I was wrong about it. But itwon't get us back up the Rhonethat's for sure!

The big diference com ing out atGibraltar is TIDES. Forgotten alIabout them , we had. W e cele-brated yesterday by putting her onthe sand and scrubbing her off.Looks Iovely she does. Today wewoke up to thick mist and decided

to do some more ships work sowe put her on the mud this timeand of course the sun cam e out!But the wind was on the nose sowe were glad to spend the daysewing up the stern tram polinethat you gave us before we Ieft(Steve & Sandy that is). lt's donevery well and is very useful forstoring safety gear and fenders.About 4ft of stitching had com e un-done. Cadiz was a Iovely placewith narrow shady streets but themarina was at the end of a 1 km .concrete strip! 2 days - a visit totown for chads and a lot of wash-ing. Next night we were in Rotabut we picked the night of the rockfestival. Mistake. Jet ski-ers yesterday (Sunday) but quietthis morning with Iots of birds andwe have had a couple of brief vis-its from a family of wild pigs. In anhour or so we will drift up river.The right bank is the boundary ofthe Donana national park.

But still the winds blow westerlyand Podugal seems a bit of adream we shall see.
