TOUR OF HISTORIC POINTS IN OLD BLADENSBURG

Th e tour of historic points in old Bladensburg arranged by the B1andensburgHistorical Society was held on Sunday, June 9. At the conclusion of the tour, refr eshment s were served at Bostwick House in Bladensburg. Th e fund s deri ved from the tourare devoted to the restorat ion of historic point s in Bladensburg.

At the conclusion of the tour, re freshments were served free of charge atBostwic k House in Bladensburg. Th e fund s derived from the tour will be devotedto the restorati on of histori c points in Bladensburg.

Th e following is a summary of the places included in the tour :

BLADENSBURG

Si tuated at the head of river navigati on the pioneer town of Bladensburg wasan outpost of international trade, even before its formal creation in 1742. Shipsdirect from Liverp ool and other European port s brid ged the Atlantic, sailed throughthe upp er eas tern bran ch of the Ana costia River and dropp er anchor in forty feetof water at Bladensburg, approximately where now stands the P eace Cross at theinte rsec tion of the Defense Highway and the Baltimore-Washington Boulevard .. Of recent years, with the growth of int erest in histori c spots, Blad ensburg isbeing reclaimed from the mould of years. About a year ago civic mind ed persons ofthe town and vicini ty formed th e Bladensburg Histori cal Socie ty for the purpose ofmarking historic sites and preservin g colonial building wherever possibl e.

Th e movement was well received and the Socie ty now has a county-widerepr esent ation of persons int erested in historic Bladensburg. Work has gone forwardrapidly and the Socie ty has gathered considerable data concern ing the early historyof the town. It is the int ent ion of the Socie ty to have architectural plan s drawn ofthe old homes now standing and to preserve at least one old home as a headquartersand museum . Blad ensburg, named aft er Th omas Bladen, proprietary Governor ofMaryland from 1742 to 1747, was established by an ac t of the Maryland Legislatureat or near a place called Garrison's Landing. The town was surveyed and laidout in sixty, one-acre lots which were bought from Miss Eugenia Calvert , Propri etr essof the land and a descend ant of the Lord s Baltimore. Nam es of some of the ori ginallot owners are interesting in that a few of the old buildings now standing inBladensburg have been tra ced to them as build ers.

Aside from its early prominence as a port, Blad ensburg is chiefly known asthe site of the old duelin g ground where Commodore Stephan Decatur and JamesBarron and other famous men of the time settled their disput es with pistols ; alsoas the site of the Battl e of Bladensburg in the War of 1812; as the birthplace ofWilliam Wirt , Att orn ey General of the Unit ed States; as the home of BenjaminStoddert, First Secretary of the Navy, of Bishop Will iam P inkn ey and as th estopping place of General Washin gton on many of his trips from Mt. Vernon toAnna polis, Philadelphia and New York.

It was from Bladensburg that Samuel F. B. Morse sent his first telegraph messag eto Washin gton and it was here that Corn ell laid the foundation of his fortune byerec ting unsightl y poles to support tel egraph wires to avoid earth curre nts .

1. Carlton Mill

Two famous old mills played a prominent part in the early history of Bladensbur g and contributed to the wealth and commercial life of the town. These millswere known as Carlton Mill and Avalon Mill. Th e former still stands but Avalonbas fallen a victim to desecration, having been tom down for the value of its buildingmaterial.

2. George Washington Tavern

In the early life of Bladensburg, tavern s played an important part. At one timethr ee well-known tavern s flouri shed in Bladensburg, namely, th e George WashingtonTavern , the Wirt House and the Palo Alto Tavern. Th e Wirt House, owned by thefath er of William Wirt , famous American lawyer who was coun sel for the Governmentin th e prosecution of Aaron Burr, and Attorn ey General under Madi son and Jefferson, has long since disapp eared, but the Palo Alto established in 1734 still stands in rebuiltform. Th e George Washin gton Tavern built in 1732 still stands in an excellent stateof preservation and has always been used as a tavern . Th e old swinging sign bearingGeorge Washington's picture which hun g in front of the Inn fell to pieces aboutfifteen years ago. George Washin gton and Patrick Henry stopped there on their wayfrom Mt. Vern on to Philadelph ia to att end the Continent al Congress in 1775. In theautumn of the same year, Martha Washin gton also stopped there on her way to visitGeneral Washin gton at Cambridge where he was in command of the Cont inentalforces. Th e old tavern is built entirely of bri ck, laid in Flemish bond and the dat eof its erection is painted on its southern end.

3. Ross House

Anoth er famous old building, one contained in most books on colonial architecture, is the Ross House built by Dr. David Ross in 1749. No house in thevillage can boast of being more historic than thi s one, for it was here that theBrit ish troops mad e their headquarters during the Battle of Bladensburg, August24, 1814. After the Battle of Bladensburg, the building was used as a hospitalfor both Brit ish and American soldie rs, and legend has it that man y soldiers whodied th ere were buried in the backyard. If possibl e, the Blad ensburg HistoricalSociety would lik e to purchase and restore this famous old building and use it asits headquarters and museum. Dionysius Sheriff and Mary Ann Hill , grandparentsof our Historian , Regina Magrud er Hill, lived in this house ju st after their marriagein 1857.

The Magruder House

Th e Magrud er House, was as nearly as can be learned buil t in 1733. By whomit is not positively known. By those who have long known th e place it was the"Doctor's House". It was also the home of Dr. Archibald Magruder for man yyears. George Washin gton's Diary shows that he stopped at Bladensburg at th ehome of Dr. Harv ey. Bicent ennial investigators fixed upon thi s house as th e Harveyresidence, but were unabl e to develop beyond doubt that thi s was the house.

Th e house has heen selected as the most typical of Dut ch Colonial Ar chit ecturein Southern Maryland. It contains quit e a number of pieces of the ori ginal hard ware such as "H" strap hinges and three locks, two of which bear the Britishstamp of "Carpente r and Son," with the Lion and Unicorn design. Th ese locksare still in good workin g order.

Th e basement is int er estin g in that it discloses the type of ar chitecture andthe substantia l way of constr ucting. Th e ki tchen fire-place is one of the largestnoted. The rin g to which unruly slaves were tied is still in the floor at thedun geon entra nce. Th ere are those recentl y living who claim to have seen theslaves cha ined to thi s r ing.

He became Secretary of the Navy und erJohn Adams, th e second President , in 1798, and continued in office und er ThomasJ efferson but resigned in 1801. Both he and his wife are buri ed at Addi son' sChapel near Seat Pleasant, Prince George' s County .

Th e house at Bealls Pleasure, or "Th e Dairy" as it was called by Mrs. Stoddertis built entirely of bri ck, made of clay tak en from the place as is shown by largeexcavations still existing.

Th e house at Bealls Pleasure has long been known as "T he Old Brick House"and was owned as early as 1840 by Lemuel Sheriff who died in 1843, shortly aft erhis youngest son was born . Lemuel Sheriff marri ed Susan Beall Greenfield Youn g,the dau ghter of Mawdit Youn g and Elizab eth Truman Beall. She was th e greatgrea t grandda ughter of Col. Ninian Beall who owned the land as part of a grantin 1706 from Lord Baltim ore, und er the nam e of Bealls Pleasure. Lemu el Sheriff'sthr ee sons were born in "The Old Brick House", th ese sons being: George BeallSheriff 0837·1918) , Lemuel Sheri ff 0843·1866) and Dionysiu s Thaddeus, knownas Thad 084{)·1904) . 7. Parthenon Heights

One of th e finest examples of colonial ar chit ecture to be found in Bladensburgis the old man sion which is called Parthenon Height s. It stands on a hill overlookin g the town and probably suggested the Acropolis at Athens, hence its nam e.It is believed that the house was built in 1743, although this dat e is not authenticated, but John Row, the or iginal lot holder, and archit ects assert that thepanelin g and woodwork of the interior came from the cabin of a sailing vessel.Th e building passed into the hands of the Rogers family , lind Dr. Harris Rogers, noted scientist and inventor of und er sea wirel ess mad e his home there. Thi s househas now (1958 ) been taken down and the Bladensburg Hi gh School stands on partof the land .

8. The Evans House

What is now kn own as the Evans House was originally the old Market Master 'sHouse in Blad ensburg. On the lots adjoining, space was set asid e for a mark et andwarehouses. Thi s old house was built about 1760, by Christopher Lowndes ofstone and br ick. It is one story and a half high and is an out standing point ofhistori c int erest in Bladensbu rg. Th e main part of the house is original , two wingshaving been erected lat er. It is now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Evan s.

9. Bostwi ck House

Bostwick House, the best pr eserved of the colonial buildings in Bladensburgproper , and the most int erestin g archit ecturally, was built in 1746 by Chri stopherLownd es, rich merchant of Chelsea, England . Lloyd Lownd es, his great grandsonbecame governor of Maryland.

Interested in the new town, Chri stopher Lowndes purc hased three lots andbegan the erec tion of a large bri ck house. It was built on the crest of a hill andfrom th e road to the house there is a broad deep garden with five terraces.

Th e house, with large square chimneys towerin g at each end was well builtof bri ck brou ght as ballast in the Lowndes ships from England and handhewntimb ers. Th e foundation was twenty-eight inches thi ck an d of a stone not foundin thi s vicinity so that it, too, was probably balla st. As the main entrance dooropens, one enters a wide hall which leads throu gh the house from a lar ge frontporch to the garden in the rear. On one side of the hall a sta ir case point sthe way to the upp er stories, and to the right and left heavy doors open into big,high-ceilin ged rooms. In the room to the right , the drawing room, is an arnatehand-carved marble mantel seven feet high and eleven feet long, and a fireplacein which big logs are still bein g burned. To the left is the dining room with itshand-carved marbl e mant el and age-dark ened black walnut paneling and fine pieces

Although construc tion of th e house was sta rted in 1742, it was not comple teduntil 1746, and the present excelle nt condition testifi es to th e care with which itwas built. Against a south wall a massive butt ress lean s, and in its base ar e tworoom s once used as a jail for unruly slaves.

Benjamin Stoddert, first Secre tary of th e Navy, in 1798, married Rebecca ,daughter of Chri stopher Lownd es, and lived at Bostwi ck . In 1824, on th e occasionof his la st visit to Ameri ca, General Lafayette and his cavalca de of distin gui sh edmen wer e met by Colonel Brice and escorted to Bostwi ck wher e a large receptionwas given in his honor. Aft er the death of Benjamin Stodde rt, Bostwi ck becameth e property of Colonel Bri ce whose daught er married J udge J ohn Steven and wasin th e family for nin ety-three year s. It is now the propert y of James H . Kyner .

In th e basement are to be found most int erestin g old wooden locks and keys.Th e hou se also conta ins its ori ginal doors an d mant els.

In ord er to shorten the tour only the ab ove places wer e included in th epresent itin erary but persons int erested in research will also want to visit suchfamou s old places in Bladensburg as th e duelin g grounds, the Spa Spri ng, th e ParketHou se, Evergreen Cemetery, the Bish op Pinkney House and Blenh eim.

"John Bowie, Jr ., b. 1708 at 'Brookwood' , married first in 1729, Mary Offutt, dau ghter of William Offutt and Mary Brock, his wife."

That thi s sta tement is true is proved by the Wills of WiJliam Offutt and ofhis wife Mary Brock Offutt .

Will iam Offutt made his Will on November 10, 1732, which was probatedJune 10, 1734 (Wills: Liber 21, folio 92-95, Hall of Records, Annapolis, Md. Aphotostat copy is on file in the Records of the American Clan Gregor Society.)In thi s Will William Offutt states : " I have alr eady suffic iently provided for mysons William and Jam es Offutt , and for my daughters Sarah and the wife ofTh omas Harris, and Mary the wife of John Bowie, lr' To each of the ahove nameddaughters he leaves "a gold rin g of th e price of twenty shill ings sterling,"

In the Will of Mary (Brock) Offutt , wife of William Offutt, mad e March 9,1748 and probated September 11, 1748, she devises " to the children of my deceaseddau ghter Mary Bowie". (See, Across the Years in Prince George's County, byEffie Gwynn Bowie, page 637.)

Th e children of John Bowie, Jr., and his wife Mary Offutt were : WilliamBowie, Jr., later called 3rd, 0 730-1753) , who married Rachel Pottinger, and Mar yBowie (1732-1804,) who marri ed Jam es Magruder (1723-1790/5 ) , son of NinianMagrud er and his wife Elizabeth Brewer.

Because of th e fact that John Bowie, Jr., did not marry Mary Beall, grand.daught er of Col. Ninian Beall , does not eliminate th e Beall ancestry of theirchildren. Jam es Magrud er, who marri ed the dau ghter of J ohn Bowie, Jr., andMary Offutt Bowie, was the son of Ninian Magrud er and his wife Sarah Beall ; andthe son of John Bowie, Jr. and Mary Offutt Bowie, William Bowie, J r., later called3rd., married Ersula Bur gess, the dau ghter of Richard Bur gess and his wife ElizabethMagrud er, who was the dau ght er of John Magrud er of " Dunblane" he being th eson of Samuel Magrud er and Sarah Beall (traditionally the dau ght er of ColonelNinian Beal\) .

GEORGE TOWNCopied from " Early Days of Washin gton"

By Sally Somervell Mackall

The town originally consisted of sixty acres of land, part s of tracts owned byGeorge Beall and George Gordon. In the year 1751 the Maryland Legislatureauthorized Henry Wri ght Crabb, John Needham , J ohn Clagett, Jam es Perry, andDavid Lynn, commissioners ; to lay out a town on the Potoma c River, above themouth of Rock Creek, in Frederi ck County, Maryland . Th e commissioners meton September the eighteenth, 1751, and elected Alexand er Beall clerk and surveyor, and Josiah Beall , coroner. Mr. Gordon and Mr. Beall , havin g refused to sell thetract selected by the commissioners, it was condemned and appraised at two hundredand eighty pound s currency, which was offered to Messrs. Beall and Gordon, withthe privilege of selecting two lots. Mr. Gordon chose lots 48 and 52, but Mr. Beallwas very indi gnant and refused to recognize in any way the proceedin gs of thecommissioners, whereupon he was notified that unless he made his selection withinten days, he could only blame himself. Cherry Alley, with its narrow winding stree ts, was the court endof town. In 1783 there was no public buryin g grounds. Prominent families had privateones adjo ining their homes. Nini an Beall 's lot was on Gay Street. Samu el Beall was one of the memb ers of the Marylandconvention who ord ered the signing of the Declaration of Ind ependence; one ofhis Maj esty' s justices of the peace, and is to-day spoken of as one of the "ImmortalTwelve", because he took such an active part in repudiating th e Stamp Act, notonly giving life and prop ert y for his country's cause, but sending more sons to th ewar than any known man .

His oldest son, Brooke Beall , one of the executors of his fath er' s will, wasan extensive, importing merchant of Georgetown, and also Clerk of MontgomeryCourt. He resided at Beallmont, their country seat, now own y his granddaughter .Mrs. Brooke Beall was highly gifted in face and form, of a ovable disposition, cultivated and attractive. Th eir home was the meetin g place 0 the gallant andthe brave. General Washin gton was a frequ ent visitor, and enjoy .d sitt ing on abroad veranda on moon-light nights, near by the old-tim e jessamin e, listening toMrs. Beall's charming guitar . In the distance the splash of the hoatrnan's oar andthe silver sheen on the moon-lit waters formed a scene of loveliness ever to beremembered.

The Beall esta te extended alon g Rock Cree k for miles, amid scenes of enchantingpeace and qui etude, broken now and then by the voice of the wood-robin, and thesparkling wat er of th e cree k, as it ru shes over its rocky bed, th e air redolent withwild grape and sweet-smelling honey-suckle. Th e new Park of Washington is apart of thi s prop erty.

A considerable portion was bought by Mr . Pierce, more than a hundred yearsago, from Leonard Mackall, whose wife was Catherin e Beall . Th e old Pi erc e Millis still standing, and ridin g along, one can see the old capstone marked 1001, I.P.

Mrs. Washin gtonlived on the south side of Road Street in the house now owned by ColumbusAlexander's family. The great phil anthropist, William W. Corcoran, bought fifteenadditional acres of thi s land, known as the Rock of Dumbarton, for thr ee thou sanddollars, which he pre sent ed to the town as a burying ground. His contributions toOak Hill at differ ent tim es amounted to twent y thou sand dollars. Th e pla ce hasbeen greatly enlarged and is now one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the country .

George C. Washington's dau ght er , Eleanor Ann , was the first to be laid torest in thi s spot. She lies where, durin g her life, she was wont to ske tch. Herminiatures of her moth er, and of Thomas Beall of George, and his wife, are nowin possession of Mr. Thom as Harrison. (See A.C.G.S. Year Book 1947, P . 92.)

Th e Chieftain's Reception was a most enjoyable and colorful affair. Th e time passed all too quickly, when the Pip er s began to assemble in thehallway and signal th e guests to follow. Th e Band played anumb er of Scottis h Songs as they proceeded while th ose followin g mad e effortsto sing th em.

REPORT OF TH E CHIEFTAIN

REV. DA IEL RANDALL MAGRUDERA N NUAL MEETI NG, O CTORER 18, 1958

Greeting to the Annual Meeting of the Ameri can Clan Gregor Socie ty, whichbrin gs us to the threshold of the first fifty years of our Organi zat ion. It is for usa happy occasion, and one that just ifies the vision and foresight of our founder s.We think gratefully toda y of Dr. Edward Ma y Magruder and Dr. J esse Ewell whosedream it was that reall y brought our Society into existence. Th ese and all th eother members back in 1909 insp ire us today as we approach our first half century .

And so we look forward to a splendid celebration in 1959 to mark our semicentennial. It is with grea t sa tisfac tion that we will serve und er our new Chiefta in,Dr. Roger Gregory Magruder , who will carryon the tradit ion of his dist inguishedfath er , Dr. Edward May Magrud er , our first Chie fta in. We have also reason toexpect that thi s next Gatherin g will be honour ed by the presence of Major GregorMacGregor and his bride, rep resent ing our Heredit ar y Chie fta in, Si r MalcolmMacGregor of MacGregor, his fath er . Th ey will have our most cordial welcome. So do we turn a new page in th e life of our American Society, and look forward toa brill iant future.

It is not enough for us to dwell in the past , to th ink of the long historyof our Clan and its glories and persecut ions and triumphs. We might say th atthe chie f cha rac te ristic of the Clan was its re fusa l to be exter mina ted and itsdetermin ati on to survive. How well they succeeded is attes ted by our pr esencein Ameri ca today. And sure ly it is laid upon us to repr odu ce in the life aroundus in our generation th ose noble qualiti es which are our pri zed inheritance. Wemust be a Society of the future. We must inspire th ose who are to follow us tocarry on right royall y.

Th er e ar e two matt ers much on my heart that I would lik e to leave with youtoda y.

First: We must have eventua lly our perm anent headquart ers where 'ourarchives can be availa ble at all tim es, and all th e interest ing thin gs th at haveaccumul at ed through the yea rs can be exhibi ted . For the present, th ank s toMrs. van den Ber g and Miss Hill we arc doing ad mira bly in thi s respect , havin ga room in their ap artment for thi s purpose. For the time bein g, thi s serves uswell , but we do look forwar d to a more perman ent arrangement for the years tocome.

38 YEAR B OOK AMERICAN CLAN GREGOR SOCIETY

Second: Thi s is the point I have been urging these several years, and thatis a substantial Endowment Fund to yield the necessary incom e as we enlarge ourscope. Since its beginning our Societ y has lived from hand to mouth. That is notreally Scotch thrift! If from 1909 on , one hundred dollars a year could have beenput into a savings bank to roll up at compound int erest we would be in clovertoday. But it is not too late. We have alr eady made a lIleginning, and if ourmemb ers will only do what they can every year, and rememb er the AmericanClan Gregor Socie ty in their wills, I am very opt imistic in regard to our future.

ACCEPTANCE REMARKSof

Dr. Roger Gregory Magruder, ChieftainClan smen and Hon ored Guests:

As we are assembl ed in the fort y-ninth year of the founding of the AmericanClan Gregor Society, and as I stand here as the newly elected Chieftain, I shouldlik e to project my th ought s back over a peri od of years.

An awareness of th e existence of thi s Society is among my earlies t recollectionsas a very small lad . In the autumn of th ose years, when the air became briskand country-side began to tak e on its brilliant fall coloring, there was a noti ceabl eincrease in activ ity in the home of my fath er, the first Chieftain of thi s Society.Th e time was approachin g for the annual Gathering of the Ameri can Clan GregorSociety in Washin gton . Th ere was clan talk when we gathere d at mealtime. Th etypewriter and telephone were worked overtime as he wrot e lett ers to clan members, prepared hi s annual address ; and mad e arrangement s to be away from the practiceof medicin e for th e grea t occasion.

At oth er times we were regal ed in a realistic manner with stories of th eMacGre gors and feats of Rob Roy, Robert Bru ce, and other famou s highlanders. As a result, nothing would suffice until I owned a claymore. Thi s was mad e froma wood splint; the kind used in sett ing fra ctured bones in those days. Thi s weaponwas one of my earlies t prized possessions.

Now, thi s short foreword is enough to show that my interest in our Scottishancestry was stimulated at an early age, and has continued through the ensuingyears.

Among the social organization s of the world, perhaps non e ha s so capturedpublic ima gination as the Sco tt ish clan system. Th e reason is not difficult to find, for it has carried down into the modern world th e great principles of tribalism andinh eritance, from which people elsewhere, have so often strayed, but to which th ehuman ra ce ever re turns for inspiration. Gentility is, of all thin gs, estee med themost valuable in the mind of the Scott ish peopl e; and pride of an cestry has produc ed very beneficial effects on their character. "Proud as a Scot" has become asaying all over the world.

It has been said that a decent respect for the experiences and sett led convictions of the past is a mark of a great people. By the existence of, th e purposeand vigor of the Ameri can Clan Gregor Society, we have shown that we havethis respect. It is our privil ege and duty as MacGregors by the manner in which

we conduct our lives and by the example we set, to pass on to future generationsthose qualities of greatness and character, which have descend ed to us.

Th ese are grave and forebodin g times, both at home and abroad. An extremelypowerful and sinister force is at work throu ghout th e world , att empting by devious, decepti ve and varied methods to capture th e minds of men, to twist and destroythose prin ciples of government upon which our grea t country was found ed, andwhich have stood the test of time, and to regiment and enslave the human ra ce.It has been stated that eterna l vigilance is the pri ce of libert y. Th e grea t prophetIsaiah , in exhorting his people in time of troubl e, said, "Look unto the ro ck,whence ye are hewn." In these troubled times, it behooves us all to look unt othe grea t herit age, which our ancestors of Celti c orig in have hand ed down to us,and, th en ever be on guard and stand firm for those prin cipl es of fidelit y, lib ert yand self-government, which had their origin in the roots of the great and heroic past.

It is with feelings of honor and proudn ess as Chieftain that I look forward tomy duti es. I shall endeavor to carryon the work of this Society in accordancewith the same high standards exemplified by the former Chieftains of th e Ameri canClan Gregor Societ y.

SUSIE DRANE REY OLDS1871-1958

By Her Daughter

EULA AGNES REYNOLDS LIPSCOMB

Susie Eugeni a Dran e Reynold s was born Novemb er 21, 1871, near Thomson inColumbia Coun ty, Georgia, and died Novemb er 28, 1958, at her home in Arlington,Virginia, where she had lived for the past nin eteen years. After a brief servicein Alexandria, Virginia, she was tak en to Thomson, Georgia, for funeral servicesat the Th omson Meth odist Church where she had long been a memb er . She wasburied beside her husband, William Bunyan Reynold s, in th e famil y cemet ery atHarlem, Georgia .

She was the dau ght er of General Ste phen Dran e and his second wife, SusanFrancis Hamrick. General Stephen Drane (1798-1880) served in 1818 underGeneral Andrew Jackson who highl y compliment ed him as an accompli shed andread y soldier. He was mad e Bri gadi er General for the counties of Richmond,Columbia and Warren and promoted to Maj or General for the Divisions of Columbia,Richmond, Warren , Green, Han cock and Taliaferro. Throughout his long life,General Dran e bore the character of "an honest man , the nobl est work of God".This, along with man y othe r good characteristics, he passed on to hi s youngestchild, Susie Eu genia , whose life was a testimony to her motto, "Honesty is thebest policy."

Susie Dran e's pat ernal grandparents wer e William Drane and CassandraMagrud er , dau ghter of Ninian Beall Magruder of Mar yland . William Dran e (17651847) was the son of Anthony Dran e of Prince Georges County, Maryland. Hewas recru ited in the patriot arm y during the Revolutionary War and was withins ix miles of Yorktown at th e tim e of the surrender of Cornwallis. William Dran emigrat ed to Georgi a in 1790 and sett led in Columbia County on land that heobtained partly by purchase and partly by grant from the State of Georgia. Thusit happened that Susie Eugenia Dran e was born in Georgia on that part of WilliamDran e's plant ati on that was inh erit ed by her fath er , General Ste phen Dran e.

In 1890, Susie E. Drane married William Bun yan Reynolds (1856·1924 ). Ofthis uni on were born nine childre n, one of whom, Eui e Frances, died in infancy.Surviving are four dau ghter s : Anna Loui se Reynolds of Washin gton , D. C.; JuliaSue and Kitty Leila Reynolds of Arlin gton, Vir ginia ; and Mrs. H. Robert Lipscomb(Eula Agnes) of Alexandria, Virgini a ; four sons : Walter Drane Reynold s of Alexandria, Virginia ; William Homer Reynolds of J acksonville, Florida; Boykin ArnoldReynolds of Wash ington, D. c.; and Joseph Step hen Reynolds of Laf ayett e, Loui siana.Th ere ar e six gra ndchildren and six great grandc hildren.

She was a wonde rful wife an d moth er. Her family was her life and worldin which she, forgetful of self and thoughtful of othe rs, found contentment. Livingon a plan tat ion and havin g a lar ge family to look aft er , her hands were neveridle. But despite her man y chores, she could still find time to make a dress fora doll, cook tea cakes and ginger cakes, and even mak e gingerbread boys and girlsfor our amusement. As the result of her determ inati on that her children have thebest educa tion possibl e, two of her sons att end ed college and her four dau ghtersare university grad ua tes.

In 1931, Su sie Drane Reynold s moved from Georgia to Wa shington , D. C.Knowi ng that th e Dran es and Magruders from whom she was descend ed , came fromMaryland, she became int erested in the famil y genealogy. As a result of her effor ts,the an cestrial lin e was traced back to Alexander Magruder , Immi grant , and shebecam e a memb er of th e Ameri can Clan Grego r Soc iety of which her dau ght er ,Anna Loui se, is now Scribe.

Having a keen, alert mind she was quite a read er, espec ia lly of history. Andwhat a memory! Wheth er she were asked th e year Queen Vict oria died , th e birthdat e of one of the relatives, the dinner menu for a cer tain party man y years before,or who visited on such-and-such a dat e, ten, fifteen or twent y years ago ; she hadthe answer . She would have mad e an excelle nt genea logist, as she had two of th echaracte ristics necessary for that lin e of research, that is ; a genuine love for peopl eand the ability to rememb er family relations. She kn ew th e connec tions of almo stevery family in I\lcDuffi e and Columbia Counties, Georgia, th e dat es of births, marriages and deat hs bein g so ind elibly imprinted up on her mind, that she neverforgot and could produce them at a moment's noti ce.

There were stored in her memory num erous poems and maxims that she wouldrecite at the opportune tim e-when she wished to driv e hom e a lesson. Forexample, if we were postponing a job tha t needed to be don e, she might say," P rocras tination is the thi ef of tim e" , or " Never put off until tom orr ow that whichyou can do today", or "A stitc h in tim e saves nine-and sometimes ninet y-nine."If we bought something we didn't need , she would ag ain qu ote Ben Franklin," He who buys what he does not need, will soon need what he cannot bu y" , or"A fool and his mon ey are soon parted." Oh , yes, she was very thrifty-due inpart to her Scottish ancestry.

Her dry humor oft en mad e us chu ckl e. She had certain express ions thatI have never heard anyone else use, as when she would say, "This coffee is asstrong as acce fortis." I never kn ew exactly what thi s Latin meant, but I thoroughlyunderstood that her coffee was en tirely too stro ng . If she wished to give th eimpression that a person was ab sent-minded, she would say, "His mind seems tobe down at Sis Phoebe' s house." Her favorite express ion when she desir ed tolet it be known that her health was not up to par was, " I feel as if I had beensent for and went and wouldn't do aft er I got th ere." A stateme nt that she didn'tund erstand might brin g for th thi s ej ac ulation : "Now, will someone please unravelth at for rne-" At tim es, when man y things happened at once , as th e ringing ofth e phone, a knocking at the door, the boiling over of th e soup, etc., she wouldcome up with, "Sometimes I wish I were in the middle of th e Ok efenok ee Swamp."Of cour se, she didn't mean thi s, for she lik ed people ; and no one was morehospitable than she . Wh en we had a party, even in her last yea rs, she would stayup to th e very end though it might la st until aft er midnight .

It was from mamma that I learned th e words and tun es to man y old familiarsongs like, " Afte r the Ball ," "When you Hear the First Whippoorwill Call"," Listen to the Mocking Bird", and "Up on th e Hou se Top." Onl y a few da ysbefore she died, she was singing thi s Civil-War song, rememb ering all of th e word s :

"0, yes, I am a Southern girl

I glory in the name;

And boast it with far greater pride

Than glittering wealth or fame.

My homespun dress is plain I know

My hat's palmetto too,

But then it shows what Southern girls

For Southern rights will do.

I envy not the Northern girl

Her robes of beauty rare,

Though diamonds grace her snowy neck

And pearls bedeck her hair.

Choru s

Hurrah! Hurrah! for the sunny South

so dear!

Three cheers for the homespun dress

That Southern ladies wear!"

She loved flowers, particularly red roses, her favorit e bein g the Paul Scarl et;and as long as she was abl e, she had a flower garden. However, she took speci alprid e in her vegetable garden from which fresh vegetables were available for herfamily and friend s any season of the year.

Her talent for sewing was very evident. She mad e all of the clothes for herlarge famil y. We marveled at her painstaking sti tches , neat button holes, daintytuck s, shirr ings, ruffles and lace insertions.

"Aunt Susie" as she was affectionately called, not only by her nieces andnephews, but by many of her friend s who liked nothing bett er than to enjoy herhospitality, was a much-loved person. She leaves a void which cannot be filled forher generosity, unselfishness, pati ence and genuine kindness were unequ aled. Herchief concern was to mak e life eas ier for those about her . A niece, who wasalways very close to her, wrote : "S he is one of the outstanding examples of peoplewho left the world a bett er place than they found it. She blessed every life thatshe touched, and now she will continue to bless others th rou gh the people whoknew and loved her, becau se to kn ow Aunt Susie-her goodness, her gentleness, her loving kindn ess-to remember her and to cherish her great gifts of life andof living is to become a bett er person, a grea ter soul. She was a hlessing to usall the da ys of her lif e and she left us a great heritage."

Her life may be fittin gly summarized by a porti on of the Scrip ture that theReverend Dan Brewster gave in eulogy of her :

"Who can find a virtuous woman ? For her price is far above rub ies.

"S trength and honor are her clothing ; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

"S he openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law ofkindness.

"S he looketh well to the ways of her household, an d eateth not the bread ofidl eness.

"Her children arise up and call her blessed ; her husband also, and he praisethher.

"Many dau ght er s have done virtuously, but thou excelles t them all."

Mrs. Brandon's early life was spent on the famil y plantation in Warren County,Mississippi ; but lat er she lived in Natchez, Mississippi, wher e she took an activepart in the community life. She was a devout memb er of th e Epi scopal Church,a memb er of th e Nat chez Gard en Club, and th e oldest memb er of the NatchezHistori cal Society. Recently, a Nat chez histo rian , Mrs. Edith Wyatt Moore , dedicateda book to Mrs. Brand on in appreciation of her int er est and encouragement. Afterthe death of her husband Mrs. Brandon left Nat chez to share jointly a home inAtlanta with her sister and her s ister 's fri end, Miss Maude Eherhardt. She survived thi s younge r sister, hut the friend ca red for her as tend erly as a daughterwould car e for a moth er.

Her two chief interests were in genea logical research, especially in regard toher own and relat ed famili es, and in state and local history. Th ese she pursuedwith tir eless dili gence and enjoyment and was most generous in sharing th e resultsof her lahors with the man y who appealed to her. Locall y, she investi gated courtrecord s, inscriptions in vari ous cemeteries, church records, and lihrary records. Shemade more th an one trip to Mar yland to follow up, record , and file similar investigations . With intense devotion she cherished the objec ts, docum ent s, portraits, andminiatures connec ted with her famil y history. She has contributed to our ClanGrego r Year Book interes ting memoirs of General Leonard Covington (in 1917)and of his broth er , Alexand er Coving ton (i n 1929) . In colla boration she editedand published a biogra phy of Gene ral Coving ton written by B. L. C. Wailes in 1861.

Nellie Brand on was a gifted woman who had an unu sual capaci ty for makingand holdin g friend s. Th ese fr iend s and a numher of colla teral relati ves will alwa yshold her in loving memory. Perhaps the dominant quality of her per sonality washer enthusiasm. Some one has sai d, "Let us bewar e of losin g our enthusiasms; letus ever glory in somethi ng." This was her instin cti ve attitude. Her life mad eman y demands and included real hardship s, especially in the years of Reconstruction; but she was never defeat ed nor discouraged. A wond erful source of streng thto all who wer e near her , she had such enthusiasm for livin g that she gave inspiration to oth er lives. As her latt er years brought infirmities that would hav ebeen unb earable to man y, she kept her gallant courage to the end. She couldglory in communication with her loved ones and in th e int erest s that had qui ckenedher mind for so long. We believe that she entered the Heaven World with enthu siasti c anti cipation of the joys prepared for God 's servants who hav e departedthi s life in His faith and fear.

As we go to press word is received of th e death on April 24, 1959, of our lovedformer Chieftain, Mr. Frank Cecil Magrud er , a Life Memb er and a memb er of theCouncil at the time of his death.
