States emerged as the world leader in a number of critical areas – politics, economics, military power, and human and civil rights. Now, in the opening decades of the 21st century, observers are

wondering…is America is losing its edge?

Issue #1 Obesity in America More than 1/3 of adult Americans are obese.

Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death.

In 2008, medical costs associated with obesity were estimated at $147 billion; the medical costs for people who are obese were $1,429 higher than those of normal weight.

Issue #2 Racial Tensions

The number of complaints related to race and ethnicity filed against colleges and universities rose to 860 in 2013 from 555 in 2009, according to the Office for Civil Rights at the federal Education Department.

Racial tension is the dark side of the land of the free and the home of the brave. The fact that it hasn't torn us apart in 236 years is encouraging; the fact that it won't go away disheartening. How divided are we? Depends on the day I guess.

A scholar argues, “Widely unequal societies don't function effectively or have stable economies and even the rich will pay a steep price if economic inequalities continue to worsen.

Income levels have dropped and less people are moving up the corporate ladder to higher tax brackets.

Candidates reference the other candidate twice as much during speeches as what their own beliefs are.

The divide is growing between these two parties.
