P R I E S T F I E L D S CHAIRMAN’S WELCOMEWelcome everyone to Priestfields for the last 1st XV home game of the season and what a cracker it is! Our opponents today are Camberley who along with ourselves, Sevenoaks and Brighton are locked in a titanic battle for promotion. With just two games remaining, we head the league, whilst Camberley and Sevenoaks are one point behind and Brighton just four points adrift. Any of the four clubs could end up finishing in the top two key places. Before the game, over one hundred and twenty club sponsors and Vice Presidents are attending a pre match lunch. All of these guys provide vital support to our community rugby club and we thank them wholeheartedly for their generosity.

The club remains very busy every weekend. We hosted a very successful Kent U11’s tournament on the 24th March, a brilliant girls 7’s tournament last Sunday and this Sunday (7th April) we host the Kent U13’s finals, which promises to be a huge event with over 600 participants! Thanks to everyone who gives up their time to organise and run these events. The minis go on Easter tour next weekend and I hope you all have a fantastic time.

Other dates for your diaries;

• 13th April 1st XV away to Havant• 13th April U16’s host Sudbury• 14th April German Girls touring team• 24th April O2 touch begins• 26th April St Georges Day/Cockney night - see advert later in programme• 4th May Kent v Cornwall at Priestfields• 3rd to 6th May Girls tour to Worthing• 10th May Senior Club Dinner• 7th June Summer Ball

I hope you have another great day at Medway RFC.

Bread of Heaven

Guide me, O thou great redeemer,Pilgrim through this barren land;I am weak, but thou art mighty,Hold me with thy powerful hand;Bread of heaven, bread of heavenFeed me till I want no more;Feed me till I want no more.

Open now the crystal fountainWhence the healing stream doth flow;Let the fire and cloudy pillarLead me all my journey through:Strong deliverer, strong deliverer;Be thou still my strength and shield;Be thou still my strength and shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan,Bid my anxious fears subside;Death of death, and hell’s destructionLand me safe on Canaan’s side:Songs of praises, songs of praises,I will ever give to thee;I will ever give to thee.

MATCH REPORTMedway travelled to the South coast on Saturday to take on Brighton in a vital top of the table clash with both sides vying for promotion. The ground announcer, pre-match, spoke of the prospect of a titanic battle between these two sides and so it tuned out to be. This was a pulsating affair which was not decided until the final play of the game.Medway started the stronger and from the kick off dominated possession and went through the phases. Winger Alfie Orris was stopped short with some great defence. Brighton’s first possession saw them kick the ball away and subsequently concede a penalty. Medway kicked for the corner and a well worked line out saw Billy Humphrey crash over in the corner for an unconverted try. 0-5.On 13 minutes Brighton came back. A number of short carries by them were thwarted but from a 5 metre scrum the home fly half showed a bit of brilliance attacking the line and a fine offload put the centre over for another unconverted try. 5-5.Medway responded immediately from the kick off. Good work in the line out from Stubbington, Panikoula and Humphrey provided quality ball for the backs. Good handling put Orris away beating the defence to score in the corner. Harvey landed the difficult conversion and Medway led 5-12.At the half way point of the half Medway were dominating possession and despite going close did not manage to break the home defence until the 27th minute. A penalty won at the scrum was kicked deep into Brighton territory. The resultant line out ball went through a number of phases with Tom Beaumont, Dan Huntley and Max Easton playing prominent roles. As they drove close to the home line Amon Panikoula was fed the ball in space and he scampered over for an excellent team try. Harvey kicked the conversion and Medway increased their lead to 5-19.On 33 minutes Medway score the all important bonus point try through Dan Huntley. Excellent line out work provides the platform for him to slice through the home defence for an unconverted try and a lead of 5-24.On 36 minutes both teams lose players to injury. Medway lock Max Easton was replaced by back row forward Lewis Stimpson. The home centre and Captain was also forced from the field. The last few minutes of the half was all Brighton. Having won two penalties in front of the posts they opted for scrums to try and eat into the deficit. Despite winning both scrums and pounding the Medway line the visitors defence held strong to make the half time score 5-24.The second half started with Medway handing the home side possession following a kicking error. Brighton were clinical in punishing the error the home fly half putting his winger in for a converted try. 12-24.Medway came back within 5 minutes when Harvey kicked a penalty following a home infringement at scrum time. 12-27.Immediately from the kick off Medway made another

basic error and conceded a penalty. Brighton kicked for the corner. A well executed line out saw them score a deserved converted try. 19-27.Medway having made errors looked to regain composure and through retaining possession get back into the game. Good continuity play with Stimpson, Petch, Clement, Stubbington and O’Leary all contributing wins another kickable penalty which Harvey duly obliged to make the score 19-30.Medway make some more changes with Sharpe replacing Redman, who has been carrying a leg injury, and Sandison replacing Humphrey at hooker.Medway were in possession when a handling error gifted Brighton possession and following their own good continuity work score a well worked try under the posts. The conversion added brought the score to 26-30. The vocal home support was now getting behind their team. Brighton were getting on top of the visitors whose own errors were contributing to a fine fightback from the home side. That fightback was completed when Medway turned the ball over at line out and a rampant Brighton scored an unconverted try to lead for the first time 31-30.With just 6 minutes on the clock left Medway needed to compose themselves. Keeping possession and making no errors were the key to them securing victory. Brighton had field position but a good breakout from Charlie Wardzynski gave Medway field position. They recycled the ball and Sharpe and Stimpson carried well. Brighton conceded a penalty at the breakdown and Harvey kicked Medway back into the lead 31-33.This was a pulsating affair. From the kick off Brighton pinned Medway back deep in their 22. Under pressure Medway retained possession and eventually broke out Orris carrying upfield well. The ball was then moved in field only for Zach Garratt to be high tackled. The referee signalled that there were 2 minutes left to play. With a slender lead Medway opted to kick for the corner rather than posts. The resultant line out saw Medway drive for the line but Brighton thwarted this. Medway went through the phases retaining possession to run the clock out and just as the time was up Sam Garofalo found himself up against a front row forward and his sharpness saw him beat the defender and score to seal a hard fought victory. The try was unconverted and Medway had won this absorbing match 31-38.Coach Taff Gwilliam said ‘….this was always going to be a big ask to come here and win with a bonus point. We are delighted to have done so. However having gone into half time in control of the game at 24-5 we have to take a hard look at ourselves with the number of basic errors we committed. Those errors against a quality side like Brighton saw us fall behind near the end so we are delighted to have shown the composure to secure victory in those final few minutes’. He added ‘Both sides could have won and despite losing the two bonus points Brighton gained still keeps them in the hunt’.

A keen sportsman, his father had played cricket for Essex 2nd XI before moving to the Medway Towns, Fred was encouraged to join Rochester Rugby Club by a good friend Jack Lindsay.A much-enjoyed camping holiday of those far-off years was a trip on a tandem in partnership with Jack Lindsay, all the way to Devon and back. At a local pub, one evening they discovered scrumpy, which he used to recall resulted in an interesting cycle back to the camp-site along the unlit roads.Another young player to join the club shortly after WW2 was Wally Elvy, who nick-named Fred “the Flying Whinger.” Despite this they became firm friends with the two meeting up for Fred’s 90th birthday at Fred’s second home, the Con Club on Gillingham High Street.Fred spent most of his working career with the Laing Construction Group as a Digger Driver, where he was remembered by John Vyse for ‘his consummate ability to sleep in his JCB, in-spite-of all the noise going on around him!’ He met and married Margaret (Midge to her friends and Fred) who somehow managed to put up with Fred and his love of rugby. He worked abroad, in Iraq and Poland, off and on. Along the way, Margaret and Fred were joined by daughters, Brigitte, Wendy, Tina and Michelle.Fred has been a regular supporter and character of the club over the years and regularly travelled away on the team coach with the first team.Fred enjoyed his food, with his best meal cooked by himself at home being steak and chips, washed down with more than one glass of wine, and possibly finished off with some brandy!!Fred died recently before his 92nd birthday. He will be missed but not forgotten.

What a fabulous day on Sunday 31st March (Mothers Day!) over 250 girls playing at Medway RFC in the Kent X7s.

Absolutely outstanding rugby across all ages groups...thank you one & all...C’mon Medway!

April 1939 – Dr JC Sleigh, medical officer for Chatham who referees for Rochester RFC criticised Rugby Union Laws when he spoke at the Club’s Annual Dinner and Ladies Night at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Chatham. “The great difficulty in rugger now is the scrum rules!” Rochester, he declared, played rugby as it should be played. They played to enjoy it, so that their opponents could.” Dinner was followed by dancing and diversions. (Right) The Prince of Wales, Railway St, Chatham

April 1949 - Rochester City RFC put out three sides for the first time post-war with the 1st XV drawing 3-3 with Greys RFC. Frank Cousins obtained the Rochester try. The A XV lost a well contested game at Betteshanger Colliery where the miners obtained the only try. Ron Chaston almost saved the game for Rochester in the closing minutes but failed with a long-distance penalty.

April 1959 – Despite finishing two players short, Rochester gained a well-deserved 11 points to 3 victory at home to Unilever RFC. Wally Elvy, their scrum-half, went off with an early rib injury. When play resumed, a good attack resulted in Tony Shepherd scoring a try which Mick Kenny converted. Shortly afterwards, Shepherd went off injured and missed the remainder of the game. Ron Jones then kicked a penalty before Dave Lower completed and excellent afternoon with try to give Rochester a decisive win. Credit must go to the home side for their unfailing efforts despite such a handicap.

April 1969 – On Easter Saturday, the club hosted to Bonymaen RFC from Swansea. In conditions very favourable for running rugby, Rochester won by 20 points to nil with Mick Burford scoring two opportunist tries to make him joint top scorer for the season with John Morley. Where were the wingers? This brought up their twelfth victory of the season which equalled the club record and skipper Tony Evans topped the hundred points mark for the first time. April 1979 – Medway RFC are pleased to welcome John Carpenter home to Priestfields for today’s game. John arrived in this area to work at the Isle of Grain power station in the early 1970s and joined Rochester RFC and soon found himself on the fund-raising and social committee.

(Right) A very youthful John Carpenter – circa 1975

By the 1974-75 season John had taken on the very important role of Colts (Under 19s) manager. During the summer months John played cricket with Sherwood C.C. who, at that time, used Priestfields for their home venue. A fellow Sherwood CCmember, and former assistant secretary to the one and only Ron Thomas, Ron Hopwood, is also here today. By the time John moved on in 1978, he had also seen Club action on the ‘Sevens’ Committee and become a Vice President. Good to see you back John.

April 1989 – The Club’s annual dinner was held at their Priestfields clubhouse where Mr Trevor Howard of the Gravesend RFC was the Guest of Honour. Jim Fray gave the Reply on behalf of the club. This was his 25th

(Left) A dapper Jim Fray, guest speaker at the 1993-94 Maidstone RFC Dinner

April 1999 – In the Medway RFC Mini Festival, U 8s shared the honours in a 15-15 draw in their final. Sam Garofalo (our regular 1st XV scrum-half this year), Matthew Wadhams, Sam Rogers and James Winston all played well. Meanwhile, the Medway U 9 Tigers battled their way through to win

Kent Festival glory at Westcombe Park beating Maidstone in the final. The Medway U 11s, led by skipper Billy Humphrey (hopefully in action in today’s game), played well but were unable to reach the final stages.

April 2009 – Following two back to back league defeats, Medway, before a huge crowd at Priestfields, clinched their third successive league title by defeating Cranbrook by 28 points to 14. Rob Ellis opened the scoring following some good interplay by Green and Wadsworth. Ellis then got a second and Medway led 18-0 at the break.

(Right) Kevin Kimble

A rare Kevin Kimble try put them further ahead. Cranbrook scored twice to make it 25-14. However, the home team drove forward, the ball was delivered to Glen Wadsworth and a ‘majestic’ dropped-goal sealed the championship and promotion to London 4.
