body -whether it be 3 or 5 members – costs nothing extra in a town budget. Such a Board would make decisions in the interest of the greater good while working to keep taxes down. All duties and functions of the office should and would be carried out in a business-like atmosphere by all board members interacting in a transparent man-ner at a stated meeting and the minutes posted in a timely fashion.
Many Deering residents feel that is not the case currently in Deering. For what-ever reason there is evidence of dysfunc-tion, duplicity, and a lack of integrity. Such a situation could cost us dearly!
The size of a town has little to do with the fundamental requirements for being a good member of a board of selectmen. The number of board members, however, just might determine the quality of perfor-mance of a board of selectmen!
It is my opinion, after much study and talking with others in other communities, that it would be well worth the work and time that would be required to bring a five-member board of selectmen to Deering. Consider voting YES on Article 2 on the Ballot March 13.
Doris E. Beane, Deering***********************************
To the Editor:I am compelled to correct misinforma-
tion circulating regarding the proposed Zoning Amendment asking whether to include 3 town-owned, historic buildings in Henniker's Historic District.
First, the ways these three buildings and park are being used would not be af-fected. Nor would any proposed additional use or change of use. Any use permitted in the underlying Zoning District is permitted in the Historic District. Also, temporary uses of the park are not a concern of the Commission.Second, routine maintenance of the existing structures within the Histor-ic District is of no interest to the Commis-sion. Painting and decorating, for example, do not require approval when they do not compromise a building’s historical or architectural integrity. Approval is required for any erection, alteration, relocation or demolition of a structure and for any re-pairs, alterations, or improvements to the interior of a structure. The intent is to safe-guard the historical and architectural value of the building. The only way to insure that is through a review of any proposed work.
Third, the application process is quite simple. Hearings are scheduled in a timely manner and notice of approval given with-in reasonable time. The Commission has worked successfully with applications from the town for improvements within the cur-rent Historic District, for examples, when renovating Town Hall, replacing fencing around the ball field, and, most recently, new signage. The town would be the only applicant since these are all town-owned buildings.
Article XXIX of the town's Zoning Regulations pertain to Historic District and outline the commission's authority. It can be found on the town website.
The Commission is bound to safeguard the heritage of the town as it is represented in structures of historic and architectural value within the Historic District. It is meant to preserve elements of the town's cultural, social, and political history. This level of review by the commission will allow these buildings to be preserved, protected, used and enjoyed, hopefully, for hundreds more years. The amendment deserves town support.
Jon Evans, Henniker************************************

The Henniker Selectmen dealt with a vari-ety of issues at their Tuesday meeting. A par-ent from Hillsborough, who tuitions her child at the Henniker Community School asked if her child could participate in the town's youth athletic programs. The board decided to allow the child to play through this September, but that no other non-resident children would be allowed to play until a policy was developed.
On the suggestion of Selectman Leo
Aucoin, the board deferred action on replac-ing the 30 year old boiler at the Waste Water Treatment Plant pending a decision on the energy improvement plan.
Road Agent Carl Knapp was given per-mission to award the Temple Road Bridge replacement contract to Mitchie Corp.
The board voted to apply for a grant to make the Eastern end of Old Concord Road an "Economic Revitalization Zone". The
designation would allow existing and new businesses in the zone to receive capital gains tax relief. It would also prevent residential and multi-family development in the area.
Finally, Rescue Squad Chief Tom French, told the board that Henniker had received a "Heart Safe Community Award" based on the level of equipment and training available to his squad. He also gave the board a tour of the town's new ambulance.
Henniker designated a 'Heart Safe Community'
