Cities at the front line

75,5% of population is living in urban area, 80% en 2015.( Ademe 2007)

Access to European funding requires 75% of the project target related to Lisbon Strategy ( Innovation and Competitivity), orGoteborg Strategy ( Sustainable Development).

Local Authorities direct 15% France GHG emissions.(Ademe)

Cities concentrate 2/3 of worldwide energy consumption. Consumption will show 60% of increase by 2030 (IEA).

Technology is only enabling

• Individual metering systems are used more and more often.

• However, simply installing the technical equipment is not enough

• Its also of crucial importance to understand the lifestyle and behaviour of the people using the equipment as well as to understand the correlation between energy consumption and human lifestyle.

• A demand side management strategy has been developed in order to raise awareness among tenants.

• Making a building more energy efficient is now not only up to the building owner, there are currently several incentives also for tenants.

The components

A behaviour related energy saving strategy has been developed in Växjö. This strategy aims at lowering tenants' energy consumption by 10 %.

The project consists in installing individual meters for heating, electricity and water.

A display or a web based system is used for visualising the energy consumption.

Summary

When comparing these apartmentsequipped with the display to anaverage apartment in Sweden:• 34 % lower energy consumption• 43% lower domestic hot waterConsumption

The comparison in terms of electricityis made to apartments which havethe economic incentives as well asthey pay for their own energyconsumption.

The comparison in terms ofsaved energy for domestic hot wateris made to apartments where the costis included in the rent, and thereforein that case they don’t have theeconomic incentives
