Festivals and conferences play a vital role in ensuring that Canadian films from all corners of our country are discovered

and enjoyed, and that Canadian talent is in the spotlight. Cartoon Connection Canada provides a unique opportunity to do just that!

Canadian projects are brought to the screen by vibrant teams that care deeply about creating the best possible product and reaching audiences at home and abroad.

At Telefilm Canada, we are committed to seeing even bigger; and are supported in this endeavour by a growing number of public and private partners, both Canadian and foreign. We are also counting on your commitment so that our talent and their stories may take their rightful place.

Our focus is on diversity, a great Canadian asset. We encourage the next generation to dare to make their first feature films. Indigenous filmmakers now enjoy more support, and we have seen our industry come together to support the shared goal of gender parity. We know that these voices will revitalize Canada’s rich cultural heritage and ensure its bright future.

Thank you and enjoy the conference!

C artoon Connection brings us together once again in beautiful Québec City. It is with much enthusiasm that the

Canada Media Fund (CMF) joins this event that brings together the industry and the public around animation stories. Funny, educative or deeply moving stories that shape our culture and mark our collective imagination.

In these times of industry transformation, I con gratulate your determination and commitment to the animation sector. The stories you give life to on screen allow us to dream and learn, but they also contribute to the growth of the digital economy.

Animation represents an important compo-nent of Canada’s thriving audiovisual content indus try. In fact, since 2010, the CMF has invested more than $130M in over 200 animation pro duc tions. Thanks to our dedicated incentives with funding agencies around the world, we also in–vest to generate coproduction opportunities for Canadian animation creators. We look forward to building on these successes and sharing the wealth of creative talent Canada has to offer.

Thank you to Cartoon Connection and Pixel Québec for making this event possible. While past years have given rise to fruitful exchanges, partnerships and business opportunities, I can only wish as much if not more to the partici pants of this 2018 edition.

The QFTC is proud to have supported Cartoon Connection since its very first edition.

Over the years, this event has become a major one for the animation industry. In an ever-changing business environment, exchanging with professionals from Europe, South America and, of course, Quebec and Canada strengthens our respective ability to innovate and showcase our products internationally.

Cartoon Connection plays a key role in a number of areas, including the international marketing of Quebec producers’ intellectual property.

This structuring role does more than just promote our companies in major markets; ultimately, it’s about creating a sustainable collaboration that is essential to maintaining a diverse offer in international markets.

The Council is proud to be a part of this important event, and in doing so, continues to fulfil its mandate of developing Quebec’s audiovisual industry.

Enjoy the event, and may Cartoon Connection enjoy continued success!

For this 9th edition in Canada, we are very pleased to announce that there are a re-cord number of participating companies

(113 companies registered) for which we are organizing business meetings, the keystones of this annual event. Among these companies, we should mention the presence of about thirty investors and buyers as well as around a hundred producers.

The European delegation will be composed of 19 different countries, also a première, demonstrating the attractiveness of Canada as a leading partner for cooperation and co-productions between our two continents. We hope that the projects that will be presented at these meetings will further strengthen these relationships and encourage the emergence of lasting professional ties between European and Canadian producers, broadcasters and distributors.

In order to complete these collaborations, each year Cartoon offers opportunities for Canadian producers associated with a European project to participate in our two annual co-production platforms: Cartoon Forum in Toulouse in September (for TV series: 1000 participants, 250 buyers, +80 projects pitched) and Cartoon Movie in March (for

Cartoon Connection encourages the emergence of lasting professional ties

feature films: 900 participants, 265 buyers, 60 projects pitched).

At the most recent Cartoon Forum, which has just ended, 17 Canadians were present, some of whom came to pitch 5 projects in co-production with Europe and 2 other purely Canadian projects hosted as winners of the Cartoon Connection Awards 2017.

For this 9th edition, among all the projects that will be discussed during the bilateral meetings, we will again put 4 Canadian projects in the limelight by awarding them a “Cartoon Connection Award”: a sesame that will allow the recipients to directly access Cartoon Forum or Cartoon Movie in 2019.

I warmly thank our faithful partner, the Creative Europe / MEDIA Programme of the European Union and our co-organizer, Pixel, as well as all its Canadian partners.

The new global appetite for premium animated content seems inexhaustible. To stand out, it’s now essential to invest in

the right talent and push for innovation in both financing and creativity. But here’s the thing: achieving these objectives requires the right partners.

For almost nine years now, Cartoon Connection Canada has been helping you in this regard. And, each year, many of you have shared your successes and discoveries with us. This touches us deeply and once again confirms the relevance and necessity of our event in a rapidly evolving industry.

It is therefore with renewed pleasure that I will take part in this 9th edition. The Pixel Québec creative team and I are proud to provide you with this extraordinary space for sharing, meeting and invention focused on the development and exploitation of exceptional intellectual properties.

Therefore take full advantage of this opportunity to fuel your imagination and knowledge, as well as to acquire new partners.

Don’t hesitate to take an active part in our many conferences and “one on one” meetings: Cartoon Connection Canada (organized jointly with CARTOON of Belgium), by its very nature, provides unique opportunities to forge friendlier and closer relationships with the many attending producers and broadcasters from Europe, North America and Latin America.

In closing, I would like to warmly thank some of the partners essential to this year’s Cartoon Connection Canada: Creative Europe / Media, Ville de Québec, Téléfilm Canada, Fonds des talents, Gouvernement du Québec, Fonds des médias du Canada, SODEC, Bureau du Cinéma et de la Télévision du Québec, Fonds Capital Culture, Productions 10e Ave, and Alliance Média Jeunesse.

And now, whether you’re from here or abroad, here’s the time to experience magical and profitable moments of creation and exchange. May your projects live up to your ambitions!
