Development Educator

What do YOU want to learn in 4-H this year?

Whether you are a youth or a volunteer, the question of “What do you want to learn in 4-H this year?” is a simple but really important question. Before we plow full force into 2020, it is valuable for us to each pause to consider this question. In our already busy lives, how can we make sure we get the most out of this tremendous youth program that we call “4-H”?

4-H Members in 3rd Grade & Older Did you know that you can still add 4-H projects to your 4HOnline profile until January 15? We encourage you to sign up for any projects that you think you might be interested in learning about. This way, if a new learning opportunity comes up, we know that you might be interested and can send you that information. Plus, if you want to exhibit in specific departments at the fair, you need to be enrolled in the corresponding 4-H project. You can find a chart comparing 4-H Projects with County Fair Departments in the New Family section of the 4-H Forms & Resources website: https://green.extension.wisc.edu/4-h-youth-development/4-h-forms/ What new ideas/skills/experiences do I want to learn, try and/or discover about this project this year? Once you have finalized your 4-H projects for the year, we strongly encourage members to identify at least one new idea, skill, or experience they want to learn or try this year, in each project. Remember, our 4-H member goals should be about learning and growing, and within our own control. You will need this goal(s) for your 4-H Record Book, whether you are doing the 4-H County Record Book or the 4-H Minimal Record Book. 4-H Record Book information is also available on the 4-H Forms & Resources website.

4-H Project Leaders (Youth & Adults) We also encourage our 4-H Project Leaders to set 4-H goals! Setting goals can help you prioritize your opportunities and help you fulfill the Green County 4-H expectations that every leader contributes to planning and leading at least 1 project meeting or activity. Leadership goals might include:

-Hold a project meeting to help members learn about a project topic. -Arrange for a group/club tour of an area business related to your project. -Plan a community service project that offers member hands-on experience with the

project. -Invite a guest speaker to your 4-H club to talk about a project topic.

I look forward to seeing how our 4-H members and leaders make the best 4-H project learning even better through meaningful goals that challenge us to continue to learn and grow. Ellen Andrews 4-H Youth Development Educator

What new ideas, skills or experiences do you want to learn, try or experience in your project this year?

4-H Meats Judging Contest Learn more about this great opportunity for 4-H youth held at the UW-Madison campus – Saturday, April 25, 2020. Contestants will have the opportunity to evaluate classes for beef, swine and lamb carcasses, hams, place retail cuts, identify retail cuts, complete a label exercise and much more. Resource material and contest information can be found here: https://fyi.extension.wisc.edu/youthlivestock/programs/4hmeatscontest/ The Green County coach for 4-H Meats Judging contests will be Dani Schneider. Please contact her at 608-354-5434 if you are interested in participating!

Livestock & Meat Judging Practices Hello everyone, my name is Danielle Schneider, Organizational Leader for Hiawatha. When I was a Green County 4-H member, I competed in many judging competitions that happen outside of the county fair that are available for grades 3-13 to participate. Since graduating, I’ve noticed there are no kids from Green County participating in several of the judging competitions that I enjoyed most as a member. I would like to change this, and I would be willing to coach anyone that is interested. These contests can expand your knowledge of meat cuts, breeds and species, and you can make new friends and great connections. Please read the two articles above about the upcoming competitions, and contact me if you’re interested!

Livestock Premise ID Livestock Premise Registration Numbers must be obtained for the location(s) where your animals are housed. A Livestock Premise ID number must be obtained for all animal projects with the exception of cats, dogs, & rabbits. The livestock premise registration program is intended to protect animal health, as well as the security of the food chain. Any person who keeps one or more livestock animals at a location in Wisconsin is required to register that location. To “keep livestock” means to own, feed, house, confine or care for livestock, or to exercise legal or physical control over livestock. To register for a livestock premise ID number online, visit the website at www.wiid.org. If you have any questions, please contact the Extension Office at 608-328-9440. NOTE: NO FAIR ENTRY will be accepted at the fair office for showing without a premise ID number for all animal projects (excluding cats, dogs & rabbits)!

Dairy

Reminder: Dairy Rule Change for County Fair Registered animals are not allowed to show in the Grade classes. Exhibitors and Owners and their immediate families found in violation of this rule will forfeit all awards and be permanently banned from any exhibiting at the Green County Fair. Immediate family includes children and step-children of both the exhibitor and owner.

4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl The Dairy Bowl is a “quiz bowl” competition where all questions deal with dairy topics. Teams of four members compete with each other in giving oral answers to questions posed by a moderator. This 4-H competition will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2020 on the UW-Madison campus. For more information, please go to: https://fyi.extension.wisc.edu/dairyyouth/2019-dairy-quiz-bowl-contest-rules-and-entry-information/

Beef Beef Showmanship Rule Again this year, all youth interested in participating in beef showmanship at the Green County Fair must enter showmanship (Dept 2, Class M) when submitting online fair entries in order to participate in the showmanship classes.

Market Heifer Class There will again be a market heifer class in the Beef Department for the 2020 Green County Fair. These animals will be shown by weight, not by breed, and they will follow the same auction criteria. Beef heifers will need to be shown in either the breeding classes or market class, but not both. However, the same Market Heifer can participate in a beef class and a Performance Class.

Swine 2020 Swine I.D. Procedure Similar to last year, Green County Fair Swine Exhibitors will be required to self-identify their pigs. We will no longer do the DNA identification. Exhibitors will be required to tag their pigs with RFID tags, picked up at the Green County Extension office and do picture identifications for each fair pig. There will be no upfront cost to the exhibitor this year, as the Green County Meat Animal Auction Committee covers the cost of the tags. Swine exhibitors will be required to pick up their Identification kits and tags, tag their pigs and return their picture forms to the Extension office between March 30 and April 17 to exhibit their pigs at the 2020 fair. The Green County Extension office will again loan out ear

taggers for exhibitors to use for tagging their pigs. The taggers must be returned to the Extension office and will be sanitized before being given to another farm to prevent the spread of disease. Exhibitors will not be required to pay a fee for each Identification kit when they pick them up. 4-H Leaders and Agriculture instructors will be allowed to pick up ID kits for their members. However, they will be required to sign for all the kits that they pick up at the Extension office. The kit will include YQCA information, Swine Picture Identification Forms and RFID ear tags. The Identification Forms must be returned to the Extension office by April 17. The forms should be delivered directly to the Extension office and not be mailed. Wisconsin Pork Association Youth Pig Project The Wisconsin Pork Association Youth Committee is once again offering Youth Pig Project scholarships. These scholarships are designed to assist 4-H and FFA members in establishing swine projects that can lead to development of life skills and career opportunities in the Wisconsin pork industry. 4-H and FFA youth are eligible to apply for a $50.00 scholarship used to offset costs associated with their 2020 pig project. Scholarships will be awarded in three age divisions, as follows: Ages 9-12, 13-15, and 16-19 (as of January 1, 2020). Thanks to support from pig breeders throughout the state, at least twenty $50.00 scholarships will be awarded this spring. Interested youth may download the scholarship application form from the WPA website at www.wppa.org/youth-pig-project or call the WPA office at 608-723-7551 to have a copy mailed.

Reminder: Exhibiting Swine in other states As a reminder, if you exhibit pigs in another state and the pigs return to Wisconsin after the show, you must notify the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) of the movement before returning to Wisconsin and before exhibiting the same pigs at the Green County Fair. The WI DATCP may issue you an import permit, and upon re-entry into Wisconsin, the pigs, herd of origin, or both will be quarantined until a herd plan is developed and approved.

Sheep & Goats Goat Committee Meeting Tuesday, January 14, 2020 6:30—7:30pm Rooms 2 & 3, Green County Justice Center, Monroe All project members and leaders are welcome!

Performance Lamb Class Again this year at the Green County Fair, the performance lamb class will be the same as held last year. Please make sure to consult the 2020 Fairbook for the specific class when submitting your online Fair entries in May.

Market Lamb & Market Goat Weigh-In Saturday, April 18, 2020 9:00 - 11:00 AM Green County Fairgrounds, Barn 7 Each exhibitor can identify a maximum of five market lambs and five market goats. The maximum weight for all market lambs is 105 pounds at the pre-fair weigh-in on April 18. Market lambs weighing more than 105 pounds at the pre-fair weigh-in will not be eligible to exhibit at the Green County Fair. There is no minimum weight for lambs or goats at the weigh-in. There are no minimum or maximum weights at fair time to be able to exhibit market lambs or goats at the Green County Fair. However, exhibitors are reminded that to be eligible to sell a lamb in the county fair auction they must weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. Exhibitors will get paid up to a maximum weight of 150 pounds for lambs that sold in the auction. Only the Grand and Reserve Champion Market Goats will be allowed to sell in the 2020 Auction. Market Goats must meet a minimum weight of 45 pounds to sell and will be paid up to a maximum weight of 100 pounds. If the market classes for goats increase enough in numbers, more goats may be allowed to sell in the future. If you would like assistance in determining the ideal weight range for lambs or goats to bring to the pre-fair weigh-in, please contact your 4-H sheep project leader or Vo-Ag Instructor.

Horse & Pony

Upcoming Horse Committee Meetings Tuesday, January 14, 2020 Tuesday, February 11, 2020 Tuesday, March 10, 2020 Tuesday, April 14, 2020 Tuesday, May 12, 2020 Tuesday, June 9, 2020

The 4-H Horse & Pony Committee will meet the 2nd Tuesday of every month. All meetings will be held in the WisLine Room of the Justice Center from 6:30 - 7:30 PM. All horse project members are welcome to attend!

Horse Project Kick-off Meeting Sunday, February 2, 2020 1:00 - 3:00 PM Rooms 2 & 3, Green County Justice Center, Monroe

Any youth interested in participating in the 4-H horse & pony project this year should plan to attend this meeting. We’ll have registration paperwork available for you, and you’ll be

able to pay your dues and ask any questions you might have. All horse families will be receiving a mailing with more information in mid-January. All horse project registration paperwork and fees need to be turned in to the Extension office by Friday, February 28 at 4:30pm. For additional information, contact Kristina Foster at [email protected].

Horse Department - Important Changes! The 4-H Horse Committee, with review and approval by the County Fair Board, has made important changes to qualifications to participate in the 2020 Green County Pre-Fair Horse Show (June 27), County Fair Horse Show (July 11) , Speed Show (July 12 - now on Sunday!). The goal of the changes is to put greater emphasis on safe riding and handling practices, while decreasing the burden of outgoing requirements, once a safe threshold is met. These changes will be fully explained at the 4-H Horse Project Kick-off, Sunday, February 2nd @ 1:00pm at the Justice Center.

Key points to note... The "Education & Service Form" will NOT be required this

year. Participation in educational clinics is still encouraged, but not required.

Each youth exhibitor will be required to pass a "Safety Riding Test" with each horse they intend to use in any of the 3 Fair shows. If a youth will only be using a horse for halter classes, then they will only need to pass the Basic Handling portion of the test. Once a rider/horse combination has passed the test, that combination does not need to repeat the test in future years. The 4-H Horse Committee will be publishing a schedule and hosting numerous opportunities (ride nights & clinics) to learn about and test on safe handling and riding. An exhibitor may repeat the test as many times as necessary to demonstrate safe handling and riding practices. Safety is the goal! A copy of the "Safety Riding Test" is available on the 4-H Horse Project website: https://green.extension.wisc.edu/4-h-youth-development/4-h-projects/horses/

The 4-H Horse Committee wants Ride Nights and Horse Clinics (and Safety Riding Testing) to be accessible to all Junior Fair Horse Exhibitors. If you know of a boarding facility or indoor riding facility in Green County that is willing to host a Ride Night or lead a clinic, please contact Ellen Andrews at the Extension Office, so that we can pass this along to our 4-H Horse Committee.

Every family still needs to plan on volunteering at our Pre-Fair and Fair Horse Shows. These shows take many, many volunteers. If we don't have enough volunteers, then we simply can't offer these show opportunities. If you need to recruit grandparents, extended family, friends & neighbors to help fulfill your family's volunteer expectation at these shows, then please plan ahead and do that. These shows are not solely the responsibility of the 4-H Horse Committee members.

Dogs

Dog Quiz Bowl Love dogs? Want to learn more about dogs? Join the Dog Quiz Bowl team! Dog Quiz Bowl will begin around early March and will be on Friday evenings. All Dog Quiz Bowl sessions will be held at the Green County Justice Center in Monroe. Please contact Krista Bethke at [email protected] if you are interested. Dog Project – Important Info! For the 2019-2020 4-H Year, the countywide 4-H Dog Project will not be offering Obedience and Showmanship Training programs. Members will be encouraged to seek outside opportunities to gain the necessary training. In order to exhibit in Showmanship or Obedience at the County Fair, youth will need to submit health forms and written documentation that they have completed an obedience training program with their dog during the current year or previous years (past 4-H obedience training will count, but puppy socializing classes will not count). The 4-H Agility training program will continue for 2020, and will also require youth to submit health forms and written documentation

that they have previously completed an obedience program with their dog. The capacity of the 4-H program is only as great as the capacity of volunteers willing to step forward and contribute their time and talent to make opportunities available. If you or someone you know would be interested in offering a 4-H Obedience and Showmanship Training program at the club or county level, please contact Ellen at the Extension Office.

Cats Cat Committee Meeting Wednesday, February 5, 2020 7:00—8:00pm Room 1, Green County Justice Center, Monroe All project members and leaders are welcome at this meeting to share ideas for fun learning opportunities this year!

2020 Green County Fair Updates

Department 1 – Dairy Registered animals are not allowed to show in the Grade classes. Exhibitors and Owners and their immediate families found in violation of this rule will forfeit all awards and be permanently banned from any exhibiting at the Green County Fair. Immediate family includes children and step-children of both the exhibitor and owner. Dairy Showmanship will switch order this year and Dairy Animals will be shown oldest to youngest, immediately following club herds.

Department 2 - Beef Again this year, all youth interested in participating in beef showmanship at the Green County Fair must enter showmanship (Dept 2, Class M) when submitting online fair entries in order to participate in the showmanship classes. Again this year—Market Heifers can be weighed in to show at the Green County Fair as well as participate in the Beef Performance Class.

Department 3 - Swine There will be no cost of identifying swine this year through the Green County Extension Office. The Green County Meat Animal Auction Committee continues to graciously cover the cost of the ear tags. There will be NO DNA sampling, instead the tags and a picture ID process will be used. Identification kits may be picked up starting Mar. 30 and must be returned by April 17.

Department 4 - Sheep This year at the Green County Fair, the performance lamb class will be the same as held last year. Please make sure to consult the 2020 Fairbook for the specific class when submitting your online Fair entries in May.

Page 11: January/February 2020Jan 12, 2019  · green.extension.wisc.edu/4-h-youth-development/-----

Alternate Entries Dairy exhibitors, as well as Beef and Sheep breeding stock exhibitors, will be allowed one alternate entry. Alternate does NOT have to be in the same class, but it must be listed on the fair entry form. Showmanship - All Animal Departments Youth must enter showmanship on their fair entry form to participate in the showmanship classes. Meat Animal Auction - Residency Rule The county residency rule has been removed from the Meat Animal Auction requirements. Youth must be a member of a Green County 4-H Club or FFA chapter to sell in 2020.

Meat Animal Auction - Other Fair Auctions Exhibitors who sell animals in any other Fair Meat Animal Auction are not eligible to sell at the Green County Fair Meat Animal Auctions that same year. The only exception to this rule would be if their animals are sold through the Governor’s Auction at the WI State Fair. Youth may also participate in other Youth Fair Auctions where their animals are not sold without losing their eligibility to participate in the Green County Fair Meat Animal Auction.

2020 WI State Fair Updates Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) Certification Again this year, Wisconsin will use the YQCA program, a youth education certification program on the issues of animal welfare, food safety and character education.

For 2020, this certification will be required of: All Green County Fair Exhibitors whose animals stay

overnight at the Fair (Dairy, Beef, Swine, Sheep, Goats, Poultry & Rabbits)– must complete and submit certificate number as part of the Green County Fair Entry process in May.

WI State Fair Junior Animal Exhibitors (Dairy, Beef, Swine, Sheep, Goats, Poultry & Rabbits) – must complete and submit certification number as part of WSF entry process.

YQCA gives families more flexibility in gaining this required certification, by offering them three methods: Face-to-face Training (60 minutes) – Offered in early-March

2020; Must register online at a cost of $3/person/year for the face-to-face training. Dates for the Face-to-Face trainings will be Saturday, March 14, 9:00-10:00am and Wednesday, March 18, 6:00-7:00pm. Face-to-face trainings will require pre-registration and payment.

Online Training (60-90 minutes) – Available 24/7 which allows exhibitors flexibility to take the course at their convenience; Will contain 3 modules, tailored to youth age categories (ages 8-11, 12-14, 15-18 & 19-21); Each module will conclude with a 10 question quiz, with opportunities to go back into the modules to find the correct answers or retake the quiz after 1 hour; Must

register online at a cost of $12/person/year for the online training.

Test-out option-again this year youth ages 12 ($36), 15 ($48), and 19 ($36) may choose the test-out option. Youth must score 80% or better and you will only be charged if you pass the test. If you don’t pass, you will be instructed to take the web-based training.

Green County 4-H Communications Contest Sunday, February 23, 2020

Green County Justice Center Registration Begins at 1:30 PM

DIVISIONS WILL PROMPTLY START AT 2:00 PM

Registration deadline for this event is Sunday, February 16.

Presenting or speaking before a group or audience is an important life skill to develop. The goal of the Green County 4-H Communications Contest is to give 4-H youth an opportunity to develop and polish these skills in a supportive and encouraging environment. 4-H participants will be evaluated and provided constructive feedback on their presentation, each receiving a certificate of participation and a participation ribbon (gr. K-2) or ribbon placing (gr. 3-13). This year’s Communication Contest will have three divisions. Youth are eligible to submit one entry in each division. SPEAKING DIVISION DEMONSTRATION DIVISION NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION DIVISION SPEAKING DIVISION: Participants in the SPEAKING DIVISION will be categorized by Grade Level, each with a grade appropriate time limit. Grade Levels: Cloverbud (Grades K-2): 1-3 minutes Beginner (Grades 3-5): 2-4 minutes

Intermediate (Grades 6-8): 3-5 minutes Senior (Grades 9 & Up): 4-7 minutes

SPEAKING DIVISION participants (K-13) will have the choice of presenting prose, poetry or a traditional speech. Prose/Poetry – Options include: prose reading, poetry reading, a memorized piece, storytelling (where the story is

told and not read), or an interpretive speech (a speech that had originally been written and presented by someone else). You may edit your selection to meet the time requirement. Original poetry or stories can also be used. Presentations will be critiqued on use of introduction, voice, expression and appropriateness of material.

-If reading the selection, text should be mounted on construction paper instead of reading from a book. -You should prepare and memorize an introduction that includes credit to the author(s) and any transitions

that are needed if you have more than one piece. -NO props or costumes are permitted. -**Cloverbuds are invited, but NOT limited, to reciting from memory the 4-H Pledge.

4-H Pledge: I Pledge My Head to Clearer Thinking; My Heart To Greater Loyalty; My Hands To Larger Service; My Health To Better Living; For My Club, My Community, My Country and My World.

Traditional Speech – Pick a topic of your choice and write an original, factual speech about it. This could be about a

4-H project you love or a current issue you are concerned about. Your speech could inform, persuade, or motivate your audience. You may use note cards during your presentation, but do not read your speech from your notes. You may also use visuals (posters, charts, diagrams, power point) to help you deliver your speech, but NOT props or costumes. (Keep in mind, this is a speech, not a demonstration.)

DEMONSTRATION DIVISION: Participants in the DEMONSTRATION DIVISION will be categorized by Grade Level, with a grade appropriate time limit. Grade Levels: Cloverbud (Grades K-2): 2-4 minutes Beginner (Grades 3-5): 3-6 minutes

Intermediate (Grades 6-8): 5-10 minutes Senior (Grades 9 & Up): 5-10 minutes

In this division, 4-H youth members demonstrate individually or with another member as a team entry. A topic is chosen, often from a 4-H project. Props and visual aids are required, as well as homemade posters or presentations using computer software. A successful demonstration will show the audience and judges several steps in a process, such as preparing a cooked dish, grooming an animal, etc. Demonstrations are followed by a question and answer period with the judge and audience. Individual Demonstration Team Demonstration This contest will replace the County Fair Demonstration Contest. Members enrolled in the 4-H Demonstration Project (Grades 3-13) can earn fair premium, if they present a demonstration at this contest and then again in the Hospitality Tent at the County Fair, and list the demonstration as an entry on their County Fair Entry form.

NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION DIVISION: Entries in this division must be on a 4-H topic or theme, and must be the original work of the exhibitor, within the current 4-H year. The name, club and grade of the 4-H member should be clearly displayed on the exhibit (i.e. back of poster, inside cover of scrapbook, DVD case). No copyrighted ideas.
