2019 RECIPIENTS
PROGRAM
INFORMATION
Summer internships offer robust learning/work
experiences that help students advance their
academic interests and careers. Unfortunately, a
number of great internships are unpaid, and
therefore not an option for many students with
limited financial resources. To help address this,
the Macalester Summer Internship Grant
(MSIG) program was created to offer financial
support for students to do full and part-time
10-week long internships anywhere in the
world. Now in its fifth year, the 2019 program
awarded grants to 39 students, primarily those
with significant financial need, to help defray
living expenses for the duration of the unpaid
internship (i.e. housing, travel, food, etc.). Grants
of $5000 were awarded for full time internships,
and half grants of $2500 were awarded for
part-time internships or for interns whose
housing was provided (e.g. living at home).
Internships are registered for academic credit,
supported academically by a Macalester faculty
sponsor and administratively by Career
Exploration. The students' internships were
monitored and assessed throughout the summer
to ensure the learning experiences developed
appropriately and positively. Students were
asked to reflect on their experience through a
final paper and poster shared at a public
presentation in the fall of 2019.

Being in the classroom is a good starting
point but being on the ground and
practically working through the
challenges makes the issues in public
health more real and thus more urgent.

This internship opened doors to me that I didn't
know existed. I was given opportunities that
challenged my understanding of class and privilege
and my plans for my career and vocation, filled
gaps in my classroom understanding of our
government, and exposed me to many of the
problems in the United States' political system.

It was truly life changing. I am now strongly
considering psychology/psychiatry for women who
have been victims of abuse, specifically in Latin
America, as a career path. This is probably the
closest I have gotten to finding a vocation that
I truly feel passionate about.

If I had to summarize my time as a Nurseries Assistant
for the WRC [Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of
Minnesota], I could simply say ‘my dream job'. The work
feels meaningful, gratifying, and challenging, and I’m
beyond grateful that I had this grant to be able to afford
the work that I have done.

Through engaging with the institutional goals of World Without
Genocide, I have expanded both my academic understanding of
human rights, and the politics and people who are trying to bring
human rights to the forefront of local, national, and international
agendas. . . . Throughout the summer, my professional and
academic understanding of real-life human rights advocacy has
grown immensely, which would not have been possible without
the Macalester Summer Internship Grant.
