Angle-controlled tightening: ITH option ALPHA
Introduction
Process
1. Torque range: One pre-defined torque M1 is applied on the
bolt connection until all gaps between all components are
closed. That is the point where the threshold torque is
reached.
2. Angle range: After threshold torque the angle range begins:
Control parameter tightening angle α is applied on the bolt
connection.
3. ITH ALPHA sensor controls torque M1 and tightening angle α
4. Tightening process ends after reaching tightening angle α
5. ITH ALPHA software offers process evaluation, for example
automatically generated Excel- or PDF-protocols.
Advantage of less affection by friction: higher precision
1. Angle range is not affected by friction values: The angle
range uses the tightening angle α as a control parameter.
This range is independent from friction effects, which could
be occurring. This leads to higher precision and higher
repeatability of the whole bolting procedure.
2. Digital ITH application software: Easy set-up and
management of all relevant application parameters,
available for ITH EDS Professional and ITH ADS Professional.
3. Low αA-factors (tightening factors): When designing bolting
joints you can calculate with small αA-factors* from 1.2 to
1.4 in most cases. (source VDI 2230).

Angle-controlled tightening is a method, where the achieved bolt
elongation l is measured indirectly. l is calculated from the
(theoretical) relation between bolt pitch P and tightening angle α.

From achieved bolt elongation l you can gain insights about the
reached assembly preload FM, which is your target value when
tightening bolt connections (source VDI 2230).
In general the modular and flexible system ALPHA can be used and upgraded to ITH
Torque Wrench Systems of types CX and D-Flex.

Automatic bolting: ITH Auto-Torque With optional ITH Auto-Torque you can speed up your bolting procedures and increase your process quality, because every cycle of the process will be performed with same speed, same duration and same force. 1. Pre-setting of the target values torque [Nm or ft•·lbs] and
tightening angle α (only with optional system ALPHA) via the multifunction display.
2. Work safety by „Dead man‘s switch“: The system only works if the user activates the „Dead man‘s switch“.
3. The required pressure will be generated automatically and step-by-step by the ITH hydraulic pump.

4. Easy control for the user: When reaching the pre-set target values the system stops automatically and signals „Bolt ready“ by a green lamp on the remote.
5. Compatibility - ITH recommends using Auto-Torque function on type CX or type D-Flex hydraulic torque wrench systems. - Auto-Torque function in always included when ordering ITH System ALPHA for hydraulic torque wrenches.
Optional digital documentation system „Docu“ offers easy application management and a clear recording of the results. 1. Configuration of applications and jobs
Easy set-up of standardized bolting profiles via PC or alternatively via multi-function remote.
2. Determination of the parameters Setting up hydraulic torque wrench type, target torque values, tightening angles (system ALPHA only) and further relevant parameters.
3. Data transfer via SD-card Multi-function remote is equipped with a SD-card slot for data transfer.
4. Easy documentation of the results Bolting process results are transferred to clear designed Excel-sheets or PDF-files on PC.

Low Profile Cassette Type D-Flex
Features
1. Smallest read radiuses The special ITH design concepts make the cassettes fit into smallest bolt spacings between 2 bolts. For example the D-FLEX are ready to be used on ASME B16.5 flanges or MSS SP-44 flanges

On-site ready, robust and flexible: The D-Flex 5 tightens steel beam bolts of a ropeway, powered by a hydraulic pump unit type Hydro-DAX 18.

1. High-performance housing compact, hardened, made out of ultra-light material

For radially limited spaces and bolts, which are hard to loosen
Ready for overhead applications Designed to fit on widely varying supporting conditions
Applications
Design benefit: The CX fits into radially limited spaces.
Dual-hose TWIN-swivel connection offers various options to position the hydraulic hoses.
Click & Change: Inserts can be changed quickly and locked safely.
The reaction arm can be adjusted in 360° along the splined housing. The asymmetrical design allows set-up of the reaction arm in both directions.
Features
A handle-bar can be mounted on and off the housing of the CX easily for an easier handling.
Fast and easy one-man operation by the remote of the hydraulic pump Hydro-DAX 18.

Type DRS
Existing nuts can be adapted with DRS-VE Easy maintainable component design:
Hydraulic cylinder, ratchet system, housing, support plate. This allows fast quick replacements of worn parts.

Features
1. Closed Steel Housing
2. Splined output for square insert types DRS-VE, power wrench inserts type DMS-KSE and hex-wrench inserts DMS-SE .
3. Light-weight reaction arm with extra-strong reaction plate, asymmetrical shape adjustable in both directions offers optimal reaction points.
4. Splined housing in addition to 360° rotation the reaction arm can be adjusted up and down along three positions.
5. TWIN-swivel-connection with two swivel points for maximum flexibility when positioning the tool and hose.

Features
The asymmetrical reaction arm can be set-up in both directions, as shown in the reverse direction on this DRS 50 used for the tower joint connection of a crane
On this piston compressor the reaction arm of this DRS 50 is in position 1, nearest to the drive
TWIN-swivel connection offers various options to position the hydraulic hose.
Using the Touch-control lock the reaction arm is easily secured on the splined housing, no extra parts or tools required.
The reaction arm can be adjusted in three positions along the housing as well as in 360°.
Flexible reaction arm can be adjusted flexibly to different supporting conditions like this cast housing.

Features
1. Compact Design Slim profile and small head radius fit easily into tight locations.
2. Hexagon output accepts for several inserts: hex-reducer type DKS-A, socket type DKS-AN, square drive type DKS-AV hex drive adapter DKS-AS.
3. Extra strong support plate direct support for constant and repetitive supporting conditions. An extra or excessive bending moment is avoided. The plate is a ware part and can be exchanged easily.
4. Component design Single acting hydraulic cylinder, patented ratchet system and strong 2-component housing allows for quick and easy maintenance.

Direct reaction point: excessive torsion and bending stresses are avoided by reacting directly against the plate.

Design benefit: Slim profile design fits in spaces with very limited height clearances.
Small head radius allows the DKS to be used on bolts which are in very close distance to the component wall.

Application examples
Higher precision by the angle-controlled
tightening with the ITH system ALPHA:
An ALPHA sensor (red) can be attached easily to
every ITH hydraulic torque wrench, like for
example on this D-Flex 5.
The reduced head radius makes the D-Flex fit
into smallest bolt spacings, which is beneficial for
all kinds of applications. The small head
radiusses are designed to match flange standards
MSS SP-44 and ASME B16.5.

Before first delivery and after maintenance all ITH Nut Runners are
tested and calibrated on dynamic torque measurement unit (DAkkS
certified). Measured values are recorded on an ITH test certificate.
All ITH business procedures – including development, production
and distribution of bolting tools and testing equipment – are
