ONE MITZVAH, PERFORMED WHOLEHEARTEDLYThis time of year is one that carries a number of dimensions within it, one of which is a stance of openness to new learning and new perspectives on our lives and our world. In this spirit, I would like to share the following reflection from my teacher and colleague, Rabbi Jacob Staub, a faculty member at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. May we all be inscribed for a good and sweet new year.~Rabbi Steve

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is a time for teshuvah—returning to the divinely commanded path, the Torah, that was revealed at Mount Sinai (Exodus 20), from which we have each invariably strayed over the course of the year. According to Jewish traditions, the Torah includes 613 commandments.

Why aren’t Jews overwhelmed by the sheer number of commandments? Why don’t Jews feel condemned by the need to observe of the commandments, as Paul assumed to be the case in his Epistles?

The approach of Hasidic teachers to this question may be helpful to all people who seek to commune with the divine presence. They observe that the biblical verse, "Cursed be the one who does not observe and do the terms of the Torah" (Deuteronomy 27: 26) makes no sense, because nobody is able to observe all 613 commandments.

Their response: Each of the 613 commandments contains the other 612. If a person observes even one of the commandments with wholehearted devotion and a full heart, it is as if he or she observes them all. Why? Because the purpose of each commandment is to arouse our awareness that we are in God’s hands, that we are not in charge, that without the constant sustenance of God’s loving embrace, we would be unable to survive. Thus, observing one commandment wholeheartedly removes the “curse” of being separated from God and serves as the pathway to breaking open our hearts and letting God’s love in.

For seekers who are burdened by a sense of their own sinfulness and alienation from God, this Hasidic guidance provides a way to reconcile that is not overwhelming. Choose a commandment: blessing God as you eat a ripe peach; working in a soup kitchen; reconciling with a family member from whom you have been estranged; lighting the Sabbath candles. Perform the commandment wholeheartedly, mindful that you are connecting with the divine, that you are doing teshuvah. And bask in the loving light.

THIS YEAR, THE HIGH HOLY DAYS ARE RIGHT ON TIME Rabbi Staub

robyn novickHAGIGA HAPPENINGS

NEW SHINSHIN (ISRAEL EMISSARY) WILL WORK WITH HAGIGA AND TEENS

We are extremely fortunate to have Itamar Meromi join our community this year as a ShinShin, Israel emissary. The community has funded him (and three others) to work with our youth to enhance their educational experience. In past years Kol HaLev has had only brief contact (3 or so times during the year), but this year we are a dedicated site and Itamar plans to be with us for all our Hagiga days that he is in town, as well as work with our high school youth group. Itamar has written the following to introduce himself to our community:

My name is Itamar Meromi and I am thrilled to start my time in Cleveland, and thankful for the amazing opportunity. I wanted you to know a little bit about me. I'm 19 years old and in Israel I live with my mom, Yael. I have two sisters, Ronni (22) and Shakked (26); both are currently studying at the university. Shakked just got married last month and I am very excited about it! My father, Gonnen z"l, passed away six years ago of cancer.

I live in Manof, which is a really small town (this type of settlement is called in Hebrew Yishuv) located in the Galilee, the north of Israel. The community in Manof is very special, and was founded by a group of South African Jews that made Aliyah. I love living there, and this place is a huge part of my identity.

My high school majors were music, history and biology. Though it could get pretty difficult and intense sometimes, I enjoyed school. It was interesting and my friends are amazing! I was both glad and sad for high school to come to an end.

Music is a big part of my life. I play a few instruments including guitar, bass guitar and drums. I listen to music any time I can. From a very young age my parents and mostly my father listened to a lot of music with me, and that made music a very special thing. My favorite artists are Neil Young, David Bowie, The Beatles and many more!

Besides music, I love playing soccer. I played professionally until the age of 16, when due to a bad injury I was forced to quit. I still play with my friends at least a few times a week. I also enjoy watching soccer, and my favorite club is F.C. Barcelona.

Hiking and traveling are other activities which interest and excite me. I hike a lot in Israel, and I think it's the best way to get to know the country! I also travel a lot with my family. We try to do it as much as we can. We like to travel to places around the world which are very different from what we know, such as Ethiopia, China, Vietnam and Morocco.

In the summer of 9th grade, I joined an amazing organization called "Seeds of Peace" by participating in a multinational summer camp near Portland, Maine. The organization's purpose is to create a dialogue between people from conflicted areas such as the Middle East and South Asia.

Since 3rd grade I am a proud member of "Ha'Ihud Ha'Haklai" (in English – the farmer's union) youth movement. It has nothing to do with farming, though. It is very important to me. The values the movement stands for and everything that it gave me will remain in my heart forever. I will follow them for the rest of my life.

I hope I was able to let you know me a little bit. I am very excited to get to know all of you, and to make connections for life.

I have deeply enjoyed the time that I have spent with Itamar so far and I think you will find, as I have, he is an excellent addition to the Kol HaLev community.

Kol tuv, All my best,Robyn

We send wishes for a refuah shleimah, a complete and speedy healing, to Abe Chasin, Selma Gwatkin, Sue Kisch, Ron Kohn, Ben Lewis and Pauline Raymond,. We would love to hear from you if you or another Kol HaLev member you know of would like to be included on this list.

Thanks to Robin Shell, who was the August Monthly Co-ordinator. During the month, members provided rides and sent cards.

Hesed Volunteer Opportunities

Over the years, many of you have volunteered to receive emails from Lotsa Helping Hands and from us personally letting you know when a Kol HaLev member is in need of some support. We are all so grateful for the countless meals, rides, and other gestures of loving kindness that many of you have shared with others through the meaningful work of Hesed.

During this season of inner reflection, the Hesed Committee wants to invite you to participate in a simple survey that gives the opportunity for you to share with us ways that you would like to become involved or continue participating in the work of Kol HaLev’s Hesed Committee. For various reasons, including acknowledging that some people don’t want to fill out surveys during the holidays, we have created an online survey that will remain open until the end of October.

Please take a minute now to answer only two questions by clicking here.

Sincerely, Robin Holzman and Martha SchubertHesed Committee Co-Chairs

If you wish to participate in the work of the Hesed Committee, or if you know of anyone who may need the support of our committee, please contact Rabbi Steve or Robin Holzman ([email protected]) and Martha Schubert ([email protected]), Hesed Co-chairs.

The October Meeting will be Thursday, October 27, at the home of Anne Adamson. We will discuss The Secret Chord: A Novel by Geraldine Brooks. (320 pages, a Kindle version exists).

A review from Amazon.com: With more than two million copies of her novels sold, New York Times bestselling author Geraldine Brooks has achieved both popular and critical acclaim. Now, Brooks takes on one of literature’s richest and most enigmatic figures: a man who shimmers between history and legend. Peeling away the myth to bring David to life in Second Iron Age Israel, Brooks traces the arc of his journey from obscurity to fame, from shepherd to soldier, from hero to traitor, from beloved king to murderous despot and into his remorseful and diminished dotage.

The Secret Chord provides new context for some of the best-known episodes of David’s life while also focusing on others, even more remarkable and emotionally intense, that have been neglected. We see David through the eyes of those who love him or fear him—from the prophet Natan, voice of his conscience, to his wives Mikhal, Avigail, and Batsheva, and finally to Solomon, the late-born son who redeems his Lear-like old age. Brooks has an uncanny ability to hear and transform characters from history, and this beautifully written, unvarnished saga of faith, desire, family, ambition, betrayal, and power will enthrall her many fans.

The November book will be My Mother’s Wars by Lillian Faderman. All Kol HaLev members are welcome to attend the book group. For more information about the group look at our web page (kolhalev.net/book_group) and contact Kevin ([email protected]) to be added to the group’s e-mail list.

WATCH HIGH HOLY DAYS SERVICES FROM HOME!

If circumstances have you unable to come to High Holy Day services, don't forget that Kol HaLev livestreams Erev Rosh Hashanah, Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur services. To watch the livestream, just point your web browser to the Kol HaLev website, to http://kolhalev.net/live-stream.

RELIGIOUS PRACTICES COMMITTEE SEEKS YOUNG MEMBERS

The Religious Practices Committee is feeling a bit light, and would like a couple more members. As we are currently heavy on members with, shall we say, substantial years under our belts, we would particularly like a couple of congregants on the younger side. If you are interested, or would like to hear more about the committee, call Bruce Fallick at 440-318-1035 (home) or 216-579-2970 (work).

SIGN UP AS SHOMER, A MEMBER OF THE SAFETY CORPS

The Hebrew and rabbinic phrase, Kol Yisrael Arevim Zeh B'Zeh, translates freely as "All of Israel is responsible for each other." In our case, we can translate it as, "I've got your back!"

Please take some time during the upcoming holidays to live out this principle. Sign up as a shomer —a member of the Safety Corps, helping to ensure that everything is safe and orderly during our High Holy Days.

If you can walk the circle of our building and are able to operate a cell phone to call 911 in case of emergency, you are qualified to be a shomer.

The High Holy Days are many members’ favorite time to make contributions to Kol HaLev. At this time of year, many people donate to the High Holy Day Flower Fund, in addition to traditional donations made in honor of or in memory of an important person in their lives. Two new funds--theRabbiJeffandDebScheinFundandtheHesed Fund -- round out a list of worthy funds which includes The Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund, the Dudley Dinner Fund, and the General Fund. Donations will be acknowledged in a fall newsletter.

DONATIONS & TIKKUN OLAM, cont'd.

tikkun olam

Each year during Yom Kippur, Kol HaLev members organize multiple tikkun olam opportunities for our community. This year, thanks to Nancy Rubel, Jonathan Wilhelm and Elliot Posner and Gillian Weiss, we have three agencies accepting a range of contributions, including volunteer hours, canned goods and money. Envelopes and collection bins will be available in the Ratner lobby during Yom Kippur, Oct. 11 & 12.

In support of

Founded in 1985, Mazon (http://mazon.org/) has long been a favorite High Holidays tikkum olam project for Kol HaLev members. As in previous years, donation envelopes will be on the information table outside of services beginning on Rosh Hashanah. Grab an envelope, insert your check made out to Mazon, seal it, and return it to the basket on the table where the other materials are located, No postage is necessary; we will send all the checks together as a collective donation from Kol HaLev, each in its orignal sealed envelope so that your donation amount will remain confidential.

In support of US Together

A couple years ago, international events sparked renewed interest among Kol HaLev members in providing aid to refugees through HIAS, a national Jewish organization long committed to assisting refugees.

This year, Kol HaLev has committed to becoming more actively involved with US Together (http://ustogether.us/), a HIAS-affiliated refuge resettlement agency with a local focus, with offices in Cleveland Heights, Columbus and Toledo. There a number of ways Kol HaLev members can become involved in U.S. Together.

Donate. We will have envelopes available beginning on Rosh Hashanah and through Yom Kippur, for making a donation to US Together. As with Mazon (above), you can bring a sealed, confidential, donation back to Kol HaLev; all donations will be delivered to US Together as a single gift from the Kol HaLev community.

Help organize the fundraiser. Elliot Posner ([email protected]) and Gillian Weiss ([email protected]) will be helping with US Together’s spring fundraising gala. If you would like to work with Elliot and Gillian to make

this a successful event, please contact them directly.

Be Kol Halev’s liaison. The US Together staff needs assistance of all sorts in their daily efforts to support the settlement of refugees in our area. We are looking for a Kol Halev member who would stay in close contact with the staff and keep interested community members apprised of US Together’s needs. Please contact Elliot or Nancy ([email protected]) if you’re interested.

Stay informed. Sign up with US Together (email [email protected] and ask to be added to her mailing list) for information about events and issues of concern to refugees in our area and across the country and world. Over time, we hope to make a significant and meaningful contribution to the lives of refugees here in Northeast Ohio.

In support of AIDS TASK FORCE:

Please donate to the Pantry at the AIDS Task Force of Greater Cleveland (www.aidstaskforce.org). Bring your bagged goods to the lobby on Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur morning; all items will be ready to be picked up by the Pantry during the afternoon of Yom Kippur. The Pantry has been very specific in expressing their needs, so please bring the following items:

Food items: Boxed macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, canned chicken, tuna and other meats are needed most. Boxed milk and canned vegetables also appreciated. Please check expiration dates. Supplements (like Boost or Ensure) are not needed this year.

Personal Hygiene products: Toilet paper and Kleenex are needed most, along with shave cream, disposable razors, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, soap. Travel sizes are especially appreciated.

Todah rabah (Thank you)!

Sunday, October 16, 2016

10 am to 12 noon at the Ratner School

We will be building the sukkah next to the gym, which can be accessed through the back parking lot. Design and

building is led by Jack Brodsky & David Williams. We will not be able to do it without at least 10 volunteers.

Please let Robyn know if you will be able to help, [email protected] or 216-320-1498.

Join the community as we celebrate, break bread and of course sing in our sukkah.

Please bring a potluck dish to share with the community. The dishes should be vegetarian/dairy or parve and nut-free. Please bring enough for 8-10 people:

A-H – main dish ~ I-P – salads/side dishes ~ Q-Z – dessert or drink

In keeping with our goal of becoming a more sustainable community, we encourage members to bring their own reusable plates, cups, utensils and napkins to our potluck
