Build BackgroundHelp children use their knowledge about animals to make connections with the text. Build interest by asking a question such as the following: ¿Qué mascotas poco comunes han visto o sobre cuáles han escuchado hablar? ¿Qué animal sería la mejor mascota? Read the title and author and talk about the cover photo. Explain to children that this book will give them some new ideas about different kinds of pets.

Introduce the TextGuide children through the text, noting important ideas and nonfi ction features. Help with unfamiliar language so they can read the text successfully. Give special attention to target vocabulary. Here are some suggestions:

Page 3: Tell children that this book gives information about a lot of animals that make good pets. Explain that the author organized the information by grouping together pets that have something in common.

Page 6: Ask children to read the sentence with the highlighted word: Los hámsters pueden ser mascotas maravillosas.
