  • SECRETARY’S REPORTI am pleased to present the West Beach Surf Life Saving Club Annual Report for Season 2012/13.

There is something special about West Beach Surf Life Saving Club. Whether this is your first year, or you care not to think about how many Friday nights you've spent in the top room over the years, there is an undeniable sense of community and inclusion about us. Those of us who have ever lived as expats know that feeling of having family that isn’t family. That’s West Beach. We are a Club who nurtures our talent, who encourages participation and who gives back to the community. The Pink Swim is an example of that. As a community group, we are always fundraising. The fact that we can look at our community as a whole and fundraise for another worthy cause is part of the reason we are growing as a club.

However, with growth comes responsibility. Every member needs to be accountable for giving back at least as much as they get from the club. To watch our President (post cardiac surgery) and our Club Member of the Year (with a very damaged knee) argue over who was the least sick to undertake a particular manual task, is a show of what this club is about. We have a wonderful core group of tireless workers. They’ll be the ones down here at six am packing trailers. Early to carnivals to put up tents and last to leave collecting all the left behind clothing. They’re the ones writing submissions for grants, doing extra patrols, sweeping sand from downstairs when no one is watching, training our members and working the BBQ at home events even though they sometimes miss the races of their own children. We need more of these people though. We need to embrace and develop the culture of inclusion we have so people are more likely to help out, and everyone feels they have contributed to the growing success of our club.

DIRECTOR OF MEMBER SERVICES REPORTThe season starts with a bang with registrations. Thanks to all the people who helped with registration this year, in particular  Don Murchland, Linda Fox and Christine Newberry, who assisted with the bulk of the processing. Christine Newberry continued to do a sterling job with our newsletter before handing it over to Jo Varney and Leila Nazimi who continue to keep us up to date with West Beach news. Thanks girls. Thanks to Tracy Ellis and Anne Green who have been managing the uniform shop each Saturday. Have you noticed how smart our competitors and supporters look in our new range of West Beach wear? This was a massive task, thank you Sarah Goodwin and Lucy McGill for all your efforts.

Our club presentation nights were both successful and I would like to thank David Afford, Paul Rafanelli and the Surf Club Cafe team for setting up the club. I would also like to thank the staff for the wonderful service and food on both nights. Thanks to the amazing Kevin Richardson for being MC for the evening.

  • PRESIDENT’S REPORTYet another successful Season at West Beach. Quite sobering in the knowledge that due to health reasons I was unable to do as much as I wanted to, yet the Club still went on to achieve even better results across the board this Season. This is due to the tireless efforts of the Board Members and their committees and working groups. This truly shows that the West Beach Surf Lifesaving Club runs on its membership volunteering their time and being well coordinated by those committees and working groups put in place by the Board.

I would like to thank and acknowledge our Club Patron this year, the Federal Minister for Hindmarsh, Mr Steve Georganas who has been very supportive and available to the Club. I would also like to thank Mayor Kirsten Alexander for her support throughout the Season as well as the ongoing support from Councillor Jim Fitzpatrick. I look forward to our continuing partnership with these members of government at all levels.

It has been a very long Season for everyone. With Adelaide hosting ‘Rescue 2012’, the Lifesaving World Championships, in November, Patrols started much earlier than normal placing a heavier burden on our members. Having ‘Rescue 2012’ in November and the Australian Championships in late April also led to a very long Summer Competition Season.

SecretaryThis season Kirsty Mead was elected to the position of Club Secretary. Kirsty has adapted quickly to the role and has been a great support throughout the season to myself and the other Board Members. The role of Secretary is also responsible for the preparation of this Annual Report. This is a huge task and I thank her for her efforts.

Member ServicesKathleen O’Riley again took on the portfolio of Member Services. As well as managing this portfolio, Kathleen has assisted greatly towards the coordination of the Education and Training portfolio which was not filled individually on the Board this season.

As in recent years, the Annual Dinner and Presentation Night were held at the Club. This Season, the format of the evening was changed slightly to streamline the official part of the evening to allow more social time. This seems to have worked well with some positive feedback already. Thanks to Kevin Richardson for taking on the MC role and keeping everyone on track.

This season also saw the Club dedicate one of the Club Swims to the raising of money and awareness for Breast Cancer. The Club Swim was opened to members of the public and the entry fees and other monies raised were donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation. The total raised was $957.75 which was outstanding.

  • FinanceThe Club’s financial position improved significantly this Season. Thanks to David Afford for his efforts in this area, we managed to increase our income streams whilst limiting our expenses. This would not have been possible without the support of Paul Rafanelli ensuring the Café is run efficiently or the support of Christine Newberry and Tracy Ellis in their efforts in ensuring we secure much needed funds through Grants and Sponsors.

This season saw significant capital spending again in the Lifesaving, Facilities and Surf Sports Areas largely paid for by Grants and Sponsorship Monies. The club acquired a new ATV, a number of competition Boards and Skis, a new Pergola over the Slab as well as new air conditioning and gas heating in the Café.

FacilitiesThe West Beach Surf Lifesaving Club continues to be rejuvenated and developed with a new Pergola and Heating and Air Conditioning installed. The Café continues to make a profit and supply much needed funds into the Clubs accounts. Through the hard work of Paul Rafanelli and the Staff, the Café has seen significant increases in Income whilst containing cost this season. This lead to a much healthier profit margin. There is always a trade-off between making money and accommodating our Members and Supporters.

Lifesaving ServicesWhilst the Club Membership increased this Season and we had some 40 odd new Award Members become active, our actual Patrolling numbers only rose slightly. This indicates that we had a number of Patrolling Members not return this Season. To continue the growth in our Patrol base, we need to now concentrate efforts in retaining some of these members.

The Club once again provided all its Lifesaving Services obligations without any breaches as well as performing extremely well in the Patrol Efficiency Tests performed during the Season. This is a credit to the standard of our volunteer members who sign on to Patrol.

There was one significant event this Season with the tragic loss of an International Student who, as it appears, tried to swim around the West Beach Boat Ramp on Christmas Day. Unfortunately our Patrol was not notified until very late in the event as the focus was on where the person went missing from which was south of the Boat Ramp breakwater.

Thanks to Sarah Tinkham for managing this portfolio again this season. It is a major undertaking to try to plan and schedule so many volunteers for Patrols and to ensure the balance of members needs with the contractual obligations to State Centre.

Training and EducationThis season saw responsibility for this portfolio spread across a number of Directors and heavily reliant on the sub-committee setup. Thanks to Kathleen O’Riley, Christine Newberry and Sarah Tinkham on the Board for their roles in ensuring all our members are trained under new awards and/or tested for their proficiency in current awards. Thanks must also go to Heinrich Hofer the Bronze Medallion coordinator, all our other Trainers and Assessors, as well as Tracy Afford in her coordination role, for ensuring the success of this Area.

Thanks to Peter Taylor for his efforts in the Clubs work with the CALD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) Communities this season and to Steven Rypp with his work in the Active After Schools program and other Council initiatives.

  • Surf Sports1st place at the SA Pool State Championships and 2nd place at the SA Senior State Championships really highlights the Clubs achievements this Season. We also saw medal winning performances at ‘Rescue 2012’ (International Lifesaving World Championships) here in Adelaide. West Beach now boasts a number of World Champions as well as a World Record Holder. Congratulations to all the clubs competitive members who represented West Beach at the State, National and World level.

This Season saw West Beach again host the Senior and Junior State Qualifying Carnivals. As usual, the entire club membership came together to provide a smooth, well run event. Whilst this is a very big task, the financial return from the event makes it worthwhile. Thanks to Sarah Goodwin and Sarah Tinkham for their roles in this event as well as to all the organising committee members and workers on the day. One sight I will not forget quickly is that of things going full circle, with past President Rupert Perry and past Vice President Bob Wilson cooking the BBQ.

Thanks to Sarah Goodwin for her exceptional performance in both managing this portfolio, but also competing at the highest level winning numerous State, National and World medals.

Youth DevelopmentThe ‘Westies Crew’ continues to help provide a pathway for our Junior members to proceed into the Senior Club. This season saw the club recognised as a ‘Duke of Edinburgh’ site with 24 members registered for their Bronze Award. Thanks to Graeme Cunningham for his work in getting this area running.

The Junior program continued to grow this Season with increased levels of members and participation. This program continues to produce many fine Lifesavers, all very confident in their swimming and rescue abilities. These are life lessons that will never leave them.

This Season saw West Beach host the ‘Nipperthon’. The event ran extremely well and was well supported by other Clubs. This set a great base from which we can work on to grow this event. Thanks to Brenda Thornton and all the organising committee and volunteers for putting on such a successful event.

Thanks to Jim Hettner for taking on the Youth Development portfolio again this Season.

ConclusionIn conclusion, I would like to thank all the members of the West Beach Surf Lifesaving Club, its Sponsors and supporters for another successful and fulfilling Season. I would especially like to thank the Board for their help and support over the last 12 months.

  • TIN SHEDDERS REPORTAnother year has gone and the Tin Shedders have made a contribution to the club as well as keeping up a very important social relationship with each other. Our monthly lunches in the club cafe are an important part of keeping the group together. We all have a strong dedication to our club and although most members don’t see us very often, you can be assured that we all support you in one way or another. Two of our members, Barry Maloney and Barry Presgrave were nominated and accepted as Life Members this year. One of our boys did much research on the background of both Barrys and put together a very comprehensive submission which was accepted by your Management Committee. We celebrated this event with a special lunch where David Afford presented the boys with a certificate each as recognition of their Life Membership.Another initiative we have started, and will continue, is to give personal profiles of some of our deceased and current Tin Shedders. People who have made a significant contribution, not only to this club but to other community development projects. To date we have profiled Nancy Fischer OAM (deceased), Leon Eddy and Robin Kidney. Each of these old members have made huge contributions either inside or outside of this club. We will continue to profile other past members. We continue to run the Bunnings BBQ’s on every first Monday of the month. These have proved to be a valuable cash resource for the club and we are committed to at least the end of this calendar year. So let me provide a few statistics for your benefit, statistics that prove there’s money in ‘snags’ and fried onion.• Our biggest day was on the Labour Day holiday 2012, cooking and selling 84 kilos of sausages

(1176 sausages) with a profit of $2276.00.• Next biggest day was Easter Monday this year, $1847.00 profit.• We commenced these BBQ’s in April 2011, and after Easter Monday this year we had completed

26 BBQ’s in total, with a total profit of $22,735.00.• At the end of this calendar year we will expect that total to reach close to $30,000.

None of this would have been possible without the help of our Tin Shed mates and colleagues, and very importantly, the generous supplier of all our food, Sausages, Onions and Bread, all at “mates rates” and delivered on site at Bunnings by Saints Meat. Thank you Shannon.A few weeks back my wife and I represented the club at a Bunnings function where they thanked some of the BBQ participants for their involvement, and for their dedication in raising funds for community organisations. Bunnings also see this involvement as great PR for their organisation and I made it quite clear to Bunnings that this was a two way street, without them we wouldn’t have the opportunity to assist our clubs. The evening wound up with a surprise for each of the organisations who had taken the time to attend this small function. We were told that we could go out into the store and select $300.00 worth of product that would help our club or that we could raffle to raise further funds. My wife, Chris, and I selected a four burner Jumbuck BBQ with side burner, stainless steel hood, thermometer and underneath storage to be used for a raffle at our club. This we thought was a great gesture from Bunnings.

All the Tin Shedders have great pleasure in seeing how this club is progressing and although most of us do not participate in any active way you can be assured you have our support. We congratulate you all on a great year.

  • DIRECTOR OF FACILITIES REPORTIt has been a big twelve months for the club, in terms of both record revenue, and changes throughout our facilities. The enjoyment of sitting under the new pergola or experiencing pleasant room temperatures inside the club provided by our new air conditioning and gas heaters has created an inviting environment to share a meal or a drink.

Highlights include the clubs’ ability to run special events with a high level of expertise including the State Qualification carnival, Nipperthon and Surf Rescue night for the Rescue 2012 event. This involves an enormous amount of planning and coordination between all areas of the club.

Part of the ever growing challenges is keeping our record keeping up to date. We successfully completed audits from Charles Sturt Council, Safe Work SA and the Liquor License Commission, and were nominated for six awards in the Club SA awards. Unfortunately, despite great efforts, we did not succeed this year.

A great big thank you to the small band of workers who helped on working bees and also throughout the year on club improvements such as a new sliding door down stairs, painting repairs, polished floors and continuous cleaning of the down stairs area.

Our cost reduction initiatives have included installing new LED down lights (cost saving $300/month), replacing refrigerated air conditioners with evaporative air conditioning and having a dedicated glass fridge.

Other initiatives have included participating in the Adelaide City Bike Scheme, offering free push bikes to ride, and trialling a second coffee machine outside. Both have been well received by customers.

Our redevelopment committee, headed by Kevin Richardson, has become involved in looking at a number of options available in our quest for new or modified clubrooms. Members will be updated throughout the year on the progress.

Appreciation for our hard working café staff headed by Brian Durack and Head Chef Kate who always performs at a high level, underlined by having every Thursday night booked out in January and hosting numerous functions throughout the year. An increase of over $100,000 in revenue from last year was reported, reflecting the great work from all staff.

Once again, thank you for the support from the Board, and members for their assistance and guidance in contributing to the West Beach Surf Lifesaving Club.

  • DIRECTOR OF LIFE SAVING SERVICES

It has been a longer patrol season than normal this season, due to Worlds being hosted by South Australia. This made for at least one extra patrol per patrol group. A very big thank you goes out to all patrolling members, especially the patrol captains and vice captains. Without your leadership it would be impossible for us to fulfil our patrol obligations.

West Beach hosted our very first Nipperthon, and both Junior and Senior qualifying carnivals. It’s a credit to our clubbies who go above and beyond when the club needs it. They were both huge carnivals and a very big thank you goes out to those who helped water cover and those who supplied first aid assistance.

Thanks to all who gave up their own time to help with Radio room duties this season. The new facilities at State Centre (Barcoo Rd) are fantastic and make it a little easier, rather then heading to the old Lonsdale Boat shed.

Thank you to Kirsten McNamara for being the First Aid Officer this season. Her constant checking of the First Aid kits and stock in the cupboard, has made my job that little bit easier.

Thank you to Darren Tinkham for continuing the maintenance and upkeep of the power craft area. He has been responsible for implementing a maintenance and replacement plan for our power craft. This will allow us to have up to date equipment and when it comes to resale we will benefit more as a club.

Thank you to Dennis Hay for his tireless efforts when it comes to our patrols. Since the implementation of the Patrol Efficiency Competition last season I feel that we have a healthy rivalry between patrol groups and this in turn helps us keep our knowledge up to speed.

Once again, thank you to all those who helped me this year. Without your help it makes me a very busy woman.

  • Patrol Efficiency Inspections 2012/13

    Internal Patrol Inspections were conducted throughout the season and every patrol had to undergo an inspection in the following areas;

EquipmentUniformsDHL Shelter and SurroundIRBSignalsTheory PaperFirst Aid Scenario

The following results were obtained by each patrol:

Congratulations to all of the patrols for their efforts over the season as the final scores were all quite close in the end. A special mention goes to Alpha Patrol and Hotel Patrol for scoring 1055 out of a possible 1060. However, the winning patrol for the season was Hotel, which won on a count back of the number of patrol hours as well as attendance. Congratulations to the members of Hotel Patrol and Tracy Afford (captain) for her organisation and leadership skills. Keep up the excellent work!Hopefully, Patrol Inspections were a positive learning experience for all patrolling members and they helped to improve our organisation and efficiency.

I enjoyed the opportunity to help our club improve efficiency and gained valuable experience in this area. Thank you.

  • DIRECTOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENTThe 2012/13 season has again been rewarding in both the competition arena, and in the education of our young Lifesavers. One of our high points this year was the number of U14s, and one U13, who qualified for their Surf Rescue Certificate and then competed at both senior & junior carnivals in the second part of the season.

West Beach SLSC regularly had about 150 Juniors on the beach each Saturday afternoon and about 70 attending carnivals. The focus for next year is not just to improve our juniors’ skills, but to encourage more of our younger members to get involved with Surf Life Saving competition. This will not only improve our club spirit but also help improve the surf skills of all our juniors. We have a large group of U8s moving into the U9s next season, most of them keen to compete, so the aim should be to take 90 plus juniors to State Titles next year.

The first half of the season we concentrated on education. We made this as interesting as possible by holding all sessions on the beach and setting theory in a practical environment. This was all completed before Christmas with a record number of kids completing their SRC and joining our patrol groups.

The second half of our season was focused on the competition and skills side of surf lifesaving with Mini Nipperthons, and endless swim, board paddling, running and flag events. West Beach also ran the Nipperthon for the first time this year and it was great to see so many children compete, this event will be bigger next year and we will encourage all of our juniors to participate.

    U6/U7/U8 Little Beachies Coordinator-Melissa Davis-Bishop

We’ve had another fantastic season, helped hugely by great weather for most Saturdays.

A new wave of Under 6’s were introduced to surf life saving for the first time and have shown great progress over the summer. A strong group of Under 8’s are well prepared for the 2 hour long sessions as they move up to Under 9 next season and many are looking forward to the opportunity to test their skills against other clubs at carnivals. To assist in this transition, we introduced an Advanced Skills session after Christmas which preceded our normal 3pm start time. Participation was by invitation after demonstrating a high level of skill development at our normal session and the focus of this advanced session was on learning the rules of carnival competition and improved technique. The 7-10 children embraced the challenge and I am confident that West Beach will maintain its strong presence at state competition with these skilful youngsters coming through. Thank you to Todd Schultz for helping me with these sessions.

With an average attendance of over 39 children at each of our 19 sessions, from the beginning of November until the end of March, we conducted our 3-4pm Saturday sessions in ability not just age based groups. The 3 groups were capably and very enthusiastically lead by Briony Goodfellow, Todd Schultz, Damien Ellis, Anthony Thomas & myself. Nic Ostrognay & Abby Thomas formed our efficient administration team. Thank you all for your commitment again this season.

With a high adult to child ratio required, we certainly wouldn’t have been able to run the program without the valued help of many parents. I know that our children love seeing mum and dad get involved (i.e. wet) and it reinforces that junior surf life saving is a truly family focused activity.

  • Our ‘Little Beachies’ program is a great introduction to surf life saving and an integral part of our Juniors and as my own children move into the last age group of it next season, I look forward to helping a new team learn the ropes to keep it going for the next wave of children.

U9 Age Managers Rob Hettner Dave Gray Nikki Ostrognay

The 2013 / 2013 West Beach U9's had a great first season. The children progressed really well with the step up to Under 9s and for some, competition and carnivals. Whilst there was a focus on skills development and education, with the help of the parents and age managers, we were able to achieve this in a fun and inclusive fashion so that we had improvement from everyone over the season. We finished off the year well with some great results at State Titles and a really good shaving cream fight. Again thanks to the parents who helped out each week, without their help we would only achieve a fraction of what we get through. Special thanks to Nicky, Dave and Scott. We have a good team and are looking forward to 2013/14.

U10 Age Managers Jo Varney Rod Ostrognay Fleur Koplin

The West Beach U10's had another wonderful season; full of fun, friendship and fitness. We were very proud to see our group continue to develop their surf skills. I am particularly proud of the improvement of the group in their confidence and competence in swimming in rough seas. This competence is highlighted by the fact that nearly half of the group have completed the club swim at least once this year. The looks on their faces as they compete against some of the older swimmers is priceless. A big thank you to Fleur for helping out with all the admin work and to all the parents who helped the U10's find their towels, goggles, food, warm clothing-and who often help me out by finding time for a friendly chat. Now we are all looking forward to next season for some more fun in the sea.

U11 Age Managers Phil Dawkins Darren Thorne Emma Thorne Brianna Richards

Fantastic year for the U/11’s West Beach Surf Life Savers. Our Saturday numbers more than doubled, as did our Carnival competitor numbers. With the help of Seniors Emma and Brianna, we increased our surf skill knowledge and had a lot of fun along  the way.  All of our girls and boys made the West Beach Club proud with their commitment, determination and team work, which was highlighted with a fantastic “ALL IN” team celebration late on the Sunday of State Titles.

U12 Age Managers Dave Ellis & Tony Nash

The 2012/13 season saw the Under 12 squad start with 17 members and this was maintained throughout the year. We had 14 of the 17 Under 12’s regularly competing in carnivals throughout the season, always with club pride and determination.

The enthusiasm and hard work really did start to pay off in the second half of the season, with all of the children becoming stronger in the water with the board and swim events. It was especially pleasing to see the number of children attending the additional weekly training sessions in boards, swimming and iron person throughout the year. Our surf swimming is really improving and it is so good to see so many of the U12’s in the senior club swim each week.

Newcomers to the squad showed particularly good growth in their skills throughout the year with spirited performances in the beach, swim and board events at club competitions. The “old hands” in the squad continued to show the way by regularly making the finals in their events, and at training would lift the bar for everyone to follow. The later part of the season saw every member of

West Beach Surf Life Saving Club Inc

    29

  • the squad reaching a final or two on competition day which was a just reward for all of their hard work

Particularly pleasing were the results at State Titles when our beach relay team made the final, and at all other team events having at least one team on the final start line. The age group again showed that we have the physical ability to be competition winners, but just as importantly, the competitors showed tremendous resilience when things didn’t quite go the way we would have hoped.

We would like to thank all members of the under 12 squad for their dedication and perseverance throughout the year. We are also grateful the support of their parents and families for making 2012/13 season so special for the Under 12’s, and we look forward to seeing everyone next season.

U13 Age Managers Martyn Talbot Christian Huntington Helen Fillery

Another very enjoyable and pleasing season over for the U13’s. Time for a rest before we start preseason for next year, our last in juniors before venturing into seniors.

This season the theory component for the group was based around the SRC award. Around half the group turned 13 during the season, so those kids did their SRC exam, and all confidently completed the award. Congratulations to you all. The SRC award is an important step for the kids on their way to their Bronze award. It allows the kids to step up and compete at seniors in the U15’s and provide safety on our beaches when doing their rostered patrols. The rest of the U13’s will complete their SRC award later this year and early next season.

On the competition side we regularly had 14 plus kids at all the carnivals which allowed us to field 3 or more teams in every event. We found the other clubs had new faces coming through and doing well at carnivals. Our kids kept pace with them, not always winning but flying the West Beach Flag and putting in a winning effort.

A few of the kids competed in the U15’s at Seniors, showing great competitive skills against opponents far bigger and stronger. They did themselves and the club proud with strong performances only just missing out on finals in some cases.

The Australia Day Nipperthon ran at West Beach was a great day. The U13’s had 7 children compete in this gruelling event. All 7 finished strongly with our highest placing a third in the girls.

We now move from Nipper boards to Mals next season, something I know all the children are looking forward to. A few have already tried them out and are progressing well.  A new set of paddling skills are required and I’m sure all the children will adapt.

I look forward to the next season and on behalf of Donna, Christian and myself just want to say congratulations and thank you to all the kids and their parents for a very enjoyable season.

The start of the season saw 7 of the group head to Surf House to complete the first SRC consolidated course. They were part of a group of 15 from a total of 6 clubs. The group enjoyed the experience of not only completing the SRC in only 3 days but also mixing with members from other clubs.

As a result of the first course being a success, Jack, Ben and Scott, after completing their initial training at West Beach during nippers, completed their SRC in the second consolidated SRC run by Surf House.

A final group completed their SRC at West Beach in January.

The first half of the season we had a split group with a small number completing SRC training, others on patrol and the girls consisting of Asha, Ellen, Eimear, Alex, Kelsey, Jordan and Brooke assisting age group managers with water cover and training. Many positive comments were received from this exercise from both the girls, age managers and parents. All the girls made the comment “the kids don’t listen to what we say”!

We welcomed back Abbey Thomas to the group this season after a number of seasons on the beach helping Mum with U8’s. Abbey participated in 5 man R&R, March Past and ran a Cameron leg at states to ensure we were able to field 3 teams to accommodate all competitors.

This season we only had 12 competitors at carnivals and states however we had a further 4, Jack Nash, Jack Beasley, Jacob Soderholm and Matilda Perry complete their SRC and started patrols. This group has proven that in surf life saving there is something for everyone to be involved in.

We say goodbye to Julie Goldner and Bonnie Richadson from our Junior ranks as they will be moving on to Senior carnivals and training next year and thank them for their time and efforts for the past many years. Brad on the other hand will be with us for many years yet, with his youngest starting in the U9s next year.

    Westies Crew

Thanks to Julie Goldner for her efforts in this area. While we have been successful in retaining many of our Youth, more can be done. With Steve Perry and Luke Hillier as our respective coaches we have not only maintained many of our young members but attracted more to our club. Dave Afford has started some of our younger members competing in the IRB comps but we need to offer pathways into Surf Boats and other areas such as First Aid and March Past amongst others. We now have more trained sweeps so should be able to have a couple of U23/U19 boat crews ready for next year. We need to find someone qualified and able to train some of our youth in First Aid and R&R-an area we can improve our numbers in.

A big thank you to all the West Beach members who supported our Juniors by providing water cover, official duties at carnivals, and on Saturday afternoons and weekday training. We also had many Mums working behind the scenes this year in an administrative role which was a big help. A special thank you to Brenda Thornton, Christine Newberry and Linda Fox for their efforts in this area.

Thank you to all our junior membership and senior management for their support and encouragement throughout the year, we look forward to improving our program and encouraging more children to take up life saving as a life style next year and improve their skills in the surf.

  • DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION AND TRAININGI am writing as a care taker for the Director of Education and Training. In the absence of a dedicated Director in this area, a number of amazing people have stepped up to make training and development work for the season. Heinrich Hofer put his hand up to be in charge of all things Bronze and, along with Dennis Hay, Steve Rypp, Sally Perry and Sarah Goodwin, this team of dedicated trainers trained 40 people in their Bronze Medallion.Dennis Hay, Graeme Cunningham, Mel Davis Bishop and State Centre also trained 23 of our juniors in their SRC.

Tracy Afford volunteered to take on the role of managing training registrations whereby keen trainees were encouraged to register their intent to train. Tracy would then assign them to training groups and allocate trainers. This new system has worked well. The challenge for the future, as it has been for the last few years, is to get more people at our club involved in assessment. Without assessors, the club would not be able to fully operate. The CALD Community Program continues to be a great success story for our club. Thanks to Peter Taylor for his hard work and dedication with the group. From an education and training point of view, I believe it is critical to be involved in community programs to try to increase our junior membership base and be strategic heading into the future. Steven Rypp also ran the Charles Sturt Council Holiday Program again this year. Thanks to Steven and his band of helpers who helped look after the children.  Kathleen O’Riley

West Beach has had a huge season and the competition area keeps improving every year. This shows that you don’t have to be the biggest club to be successful. You can’t buy success. You can only continue to build on your foundations over time and the West Beach members have been doing this now for over 10 years.

West Beach competitors continue to excel in competitions this year achieving the following results at States:

    · Junior States 4th

    · Senior States 3rd

    · Masters States 4th

    · Overall West Beach achieved 3rd in the State Competitions for 2012/13

We are not far behind the leaders in our Seniors and next year I hope we can move up the ladder again. We saw a drop down the ladder in both Junior and Masters but this is not a poor reflection on the club, it simply indicates that other clubs have increased their junior numbers and are becoming more competitive, following the West Beach lead.

Seniors had an amazing season and have been steadily improving from our years of training. We can thank the great efforts and support from our competitors, our coaches and our supportive parents. We are fortunate that we have a culture within the club that many people are involved as support crew, handlers, officials, committee members, and in many other areas. I hope that this involvement continues as we are continuing to grow as a club. To see that in six years West Beach has gone from 9th in Seniors to 3rd is amazing. Our presence was very evident on the beach with West Beach caps everywhere, in all age groups and in both male and female.

We did improve in most areas of Surf Lifesaving disciplines. West Beach SLSC took valuable points from our closest competitors this year in Champion Life Saver, U23 and Open March-Past and R&R. However, we still need to encourage more people to become involved in R&R, U17 March Past, U17 & Open Champion Patrol and First Aid. We also need coordinators and coaches in these areas.

Beach events (2km, Flags and Sprints) showed we have some very talented runners in this club and I would like to thank them for their loyalty and commitment. West Beach, in both Senior States and Masters, had a huge participation and I was personally impressed at how much we dominated the 2km. Our U15 Girls and U17 boys won their relays at Senior State putting West Beach on the map as a club with big beach future. We are still working on our beach area with Luke and would love to see some recruitment from all age groups. This is an area that our closest competitors are very dominant in and is an area of focus for us for next season.

Boards section has had an outstanding season of training and commitment this year with many fantastic results across all ages and genders. We are showing other clubs that we have the best coaches and board program in SA. A very encouraging sign for the club is that even during winter, we are getting up to thirty paddlers to training. In summer this number increases to well above forty. One of the biggest highlights for West Beach was the winning the Open Men’s Board relay, with not one Open competitor. These boys beat a star studded line up to win the prestigious team event. Congratulations to Liam and Megan for winning their age groups with some brilliant racing.

Board Riding had a few representatives whom are getting some solid results, but it would be great to see more competing next year. Easy points can be won, especially in junior age group and all female categories. Well done to Jordan Green for being our only West Beach competitor at Aussies this year.

West Beach had a fantastic season in the multi-discipline events coming 2nd in Open Men’s Taplin and Life Saver relay. Board rescues and iron person events are areas where West Beach is continually getting great results, in a variety of age groups and genders.

  • Skis had a small, but a very hard working, group who achieved much success this season. West Beach have Juniors, Seniors and Masters who won many medals and are looking very good for putting the club on the map at Worlds in November this year. Congratulations to Owen Mcleod and Greg Perry for their win at States in their age groups with some courageous racing to the finish line.

Surf Rescue Competition had a group of 20 competitors this year and came back with 10 medals in Champion Life Saver. I think that we could do even better next season but we need to start training earlier. We are looking at putting in a few Champion Patrol teams in coming seasons too. Please let me know if you are keen to participate or help coach in these areas. A great effort by Ben Zuill, Jayden Ellis, Megan Domarecki, Roxy Pena and myself representing West Beach at the Australian Life Saving Championships in Champion Life Saver. We had only one First Aid team this year and would love to have some teams in all age groups next season. Congratulations to Max Richardson and Ellen Newberry for their 3rd place in the U14 First Aid competition.

March Past have had big couple of seasons and have shown what hard work and commitment can achieve. Well done to the U23 March Past team for coming 3rd and the Open team for their consistent effort and commitment this season. Next year we are looking at both U17 and U23 teams, so help us with coordinating and coaching these groups by encouraging more of our youth into representing us in March past.

The Swim Team had a fantastic season winning medals in many individual events in a variety of age groups. Surf race, Belt race, Tube race and Tube Rescue races. West Beach dominated in the swim teams at Senior States : Women’s U15-2nd, U17 1st, U19-1st, Open-2nd and Men’s U15-4th, U17-2nd , U19-3rd, Open-2nd.

Surf Boats had a quieter season as the competition in Seniors and Masters were very strong. Boats are the back bone of any surf club and we have had a successful year with many new rowers. We need Junior crews (U19 / U23 men and women) and Open Women crews. Let’s get recruiting, as there are many points to gain in these areas. Thank you Sarah Lindsey for all her organisation in boats this season, also a big thank you to all the sweeps for their time and effort that helped out with training.

West Beach are the current State Champion Club in Pool Life Saving. We were hugely successful with many Australian records being broken, and even a few World Records by Joanne Sutcliffe and Grant Simpson. I would love to see more masters embrace this next season as there are many points to be won here also. World Life Saving Championships showcased multiple outstanding results, with West Beach walking away with 30 medals in total. Next season is looking exciting with the inclusion of U12 and U13. West Beach have some great swimmers and are looking at some potentially amazing results. To go back to back on this would be great.

West Beach are getting into IRB competition this season after a long layoff, so jump on board. If you like waves, going fast and high thrills, then this sport is for you. We are looking for competitors from juniors through to experienced drivers and swimmers to gain the crew or relevant award.

The West Beach Masters had another great year with a few new faces out there racing. More fantastic team results, with everyone jumping in to fill in teams if required. It would be great to see a lot more out there on individual’s day, as we dropped from 3rd to 4th this season. We need a lot more younger crew 30-40 year olds both male and female. If you know anyone interested, encourage them to come along next season.

Briony Goodfellow, without doubt one of the hardest working masters athletes I have ever met, won many individual and team medals at states this season. Congratulations on her silver in the ski race and bronze in the board. These results have been a long time coming for her, and are

  • reflection of all the time and commitment she puts in. She a great role for young and old and even have the nippers wanting to be a super fit grandmother when they get older.

The Nipperthon was a huge success, thank you to the committee and the work parties who made this day so successful. 150 entrants for this event is a great start and we would like to increase the size next year.

Senior and Junior State qualifiers were held at West Beach. This is a huge event held over an entire weekend and would not take place if we didn’t have the support of all members. Again, fantastic work by the committee and the different work parties who made this day happen. Thank you for continuous help and support of these events; they help our club raise a huge amount of money.

A number of people have coached within the different disciplines and the Club thanks you for the time you have spent developing our athletes. Many more people are needed though; we are a growing club and the more successful we become the more people we need to help out with Junior Coaching, Development and water cover.

Special thanks to Steve Perry, Peter Zuill, Jim Hettner, Melissa Davis Bishop, Greg Perry, Colin Lindsey, Luke Hilyard, Jesse Rafanelli, David Richardson, TJ Scott, Jessica Ireland and Martin Talbot for all their work in coaching the West Beach athletes this season.

Huge thank you to the SAME parents and athletes who pack and unpack the trailer for every carnival, set up the tent and support their kids racing on the beach. Thank you from the club for your ongoing support, time, effort and commitment to the club.

Age Managers spend hours week after week working with our developing athletes from a young age. Thanks for the time spent working with our future. Always show courtesy and respect to our age managers because it is an important but sometimes difficult job.

A huge thank you to all the officials who helped at carnivals. We are very grateful for your time and effort Heinrich Hofer, Christine Newberry, Damian Newberry, Peter Zuill, Anne-Marie Russell, Anne Green, Kirsty Mead, Susan Highett, Lynn Foster-Berg, Lorenz Klass, Jenny Bee, Helen Fillery, David Fillery, Melissa Davis-Bishop, Peter McManus, Graeme Cunningham, Jane Gilbert and Matt Jenkin for officiating this year. SLSSA required us to have a certain number of officials at all carnivals which we were able to achieve. Please consider becoming an official to lighten the load on others. Thanks to all our officials for the hours they spend on the beach.

Thanks to all those who provided water cover over the season. Thank you to Denis Hay, Stephen Rypp and Peter Taylor for getting everyone proficient this year. This is a huge job and one that needs to get done every year. Also, thank you Heinrich Hofer , Denis Hay, Melissa Davis-Bishop and Graeme Cunningham. These people are our SRC and Bronze Trainers, providing the instruction for relevant awards. Without this training the competitors cannot compete, so thank you for all your hours spent.

Parents - the encouragement shown, not only to your own children, but to others, continues to be a real strength of the club. Well done and keep supporting all the athletes and their Age Managers / Coaches in the coming years of competition.

Patrolling Members - thanks to all those who patrolled our beach and filled in for our competitors when they were unable to attend. It is through this understanding and support we were able to keep improving at a state and national level. Sarah Tinkham, you have done amazing job this year, it been a big one and I have a huge appreciation for all that you do for this club.

The Club as a whole strongly supports the sporting activities of its members with, not only, opportunities to be coached and to compete, but provision of equipment for the athletes to use.

  • This is a big commitment from the club and the competition team thanks the club members for this support.

Through training and competing together our athletes have shown great team spirit. Keep up the good work.

A number of people have commented on the strengthening friendships within the club members and not only between those of similar ages but also from young ones to those that have a few more years of experience.

We have had another very successful year and plans are well on track to continue this success in the future. So get involved, put your hand up and try something new. If we are going to continue to climb the tree of success then a few things need to happen. We need people to continue to bring down new members to West Beach, ones that have never done Surf Life Saving before. They could be anybody- your class mate, someone from your work or people from another sporting club you are involved in. So get recruiting guys. As always more helpers spread the load so please consider offering to help in some way.

  • B O A R D R E P O R TThis year saw West Beach become one of the strongest clubs in the competition on boards. It wasn't that long ago we only had a few paddlers. Although committed, they didn't have the team to provide the social enjoyment as well as the competitive challenges that come from larger teams. They did, however, set the foundations for where we sit today.

It hasn't happened overnight, but through the hard work of all supporting parents and the continued commitment by the committee members, we have seen the club embrace one of the most strenuous disciplines in surf. The paddlers are, however, the ones who can lay claim to the growth in this sport within the club. It is their enthusiasm, dedication and enjoyment that promotes it to others and makes it such a social event, as well as hard training.

We had so many outstanding efforts and competitors this year. I would first like to thank all paddlers who committed to the year. YOU ARE ALL the reason that I enjoy coming down and witnessing the growth in your skill, ability and enjoyment of this sport. I feel especially humbled by your trust and belief in me.

The year saw our board paddlers dominate throughout the season. To me as a coach we work towards States and Nationals but it is the way you race and train throughout the year that helps you prepare for the big events. From an Open perspective our team is still so young with only one open board paddler- the rest are U19 down to U15. Yet everyone will sacrifice personal glory for the sake of a team result.

So many raced up and beyond their years to stamp their authority in the team events.

Firstly, congratulations to Megan Domerecki for coming back from a nasty accident last year to gain strength and confidence and win the individual U17 boards. Megan was another who realised her potential, and I suspect this is only the start.

To Liam Cliffford who won the U19 board race showing timing and skill in a three person run off at the end of the race to claim the victory. Great effort and his excitement was testament to the level of competition.

To Ben Zuill who, although he finished 2nd in the open board, showed true grit and was only pipped on the line.

The U17 Girls were also winners with the inclusion of Roxy. The U19 boys won in convincing style but one of my dreams of the club winning an open board relay came to fruition in the Open Mens event. More extraordinary considering we started with an under 15 in Lochie Barreau, our second paddler was an U17 in Matt Zuill and finishing off with a tremendous exit and run was U19 paddler Ben Zuill.

All this is was possible because of the depth through the ranks. We are still not a big club but all have big hearts, and many times when an athlete looked spent they would get up and go again.

Finally, this year’s recipient of the board award is Roxy Pena. She came to our club at the start of winter training and from the start wasted no time in getting into the sessions and showing she meant business. It was her commitment at training sessions and personal sacrifice for the teams when the club needed her, that has earned her the award for this season. Well done Roxy, welcome home.

We have worked hard to get where we are but we shouldn't be complacent. We still have a long way to go and so far I’m enjoying the ride.....

  • S K I R E P O R TThe Ski area is slowly building strength and depth. As older longer serving paddlers pull on the pogies, the clubs younger, stronger paddlers are stepping up to the plate.

This season again saw a long grind over winter as the Cooly competitors prepared themselves for the big race in Queensland in October. This did bring many others out and along for the ride, and provided a great base for the tough season to follow. Liam, Matt and Ben Zuill powered through the cold nights to help prepare for the Cooly, and although Liam suffered injury just before the race, the Zuills acquitted themselves. Thanks also to Pete Zuill for picking up the trailer twice a week to get it down to the Pat and the drop offs for down winders.

We had a good number of female competitors start training this year and get a taste of Surfski paddling. Thanks to Greg Perry who worked on a Sunday session over winter. Emma Perry, Sarah Goodwin, Lisette Claridge and Jess Ireland were regulars through the week. One person who improved and benefited more with the technique training early was Briony Goodfellow. She worked hard throughout the year and greatly improved her fitness and speed for the Masters States.

Jayden Ellis developed the most through the year. He epitomizes how dedication and session concentration can improve your strength and ability so quickly. He coupled the ski sessions with a season in kayaks and looks a force to be reckoned with next year and into the future.

Glen Rypp had a solid season and again showed us his world quality with some strong performances at Worlds and proving he is one of the favorites for the open championships. With some outstanding paddles in the Taplin and Lifesaver relay he showed us a precursor to the Open ski final where he was second by the narrowest of margins in a hard and fast final.

I would like to take an opportunity to congratulate Owen for receiving this year’s ski award. Owen Mcleod had an interrupted start this year with injury plaguing his preseason. When he was able to start back at a reasonable level he had to make up a lot of ground in fitness, strength and fighting some inner demons. He is developing into a mature athlete and through some introspection and self belief he was able to claw back to his previous confidence, subsequently going back to back with individual ski wins from last year in a very tight, but gutsy finish to just edge out Ben Zuill for a first in the U19 ski. He is as gifted a paddler as I have seen and he can write his future in the sport if he so desires.

Finally I would like to thank Dave Richardson for his Beginner Saturday sessions and the increase in general members finding enjoyment in the practice of ski paddling. Although the bulk of my time is spent working with the competitors I get great enjoyment from seeing the excitement and joy from those experiencing paddling for the first time. To hear those new to the sport describe wonderful moments in the boat that I now take for granted (or can’t remember) helps me put into perspective how important this discipline and organisation is for physical and mental health.

Thanks to all for a great year, your dedication and support.
