Televisando lasasambleas deLawrence
La batalla ha estado andando por mucho tiempo de si lasreuniones de las juntas gubernamentales y sub-comités deben sertelevisados en la Ciudad de Lawrence. Pensamos que muchasdecisiones muy importantes tienen lugar en esas asambleas y elpúblico tiene derecho a estar al tanto de todo lo que se mueve en susvecindarios antes de que las cosas sucedan.
Televisar las reuniones trae los temas a sus hogares y es unabendición. Algunos de nosotros no tenemos el lujo de pasar horasen el ayuntamiento; otros están privados de la habilidad de viajar pormuchas razones. ¡Para eso es que tenemos la tecnología! Algunoschairmen han expresado su deseo de que sus reuniones so seantelevisadas pero insistimos que ellos no deben escoger.
Ahora la excusa es que si la ciudad quiere ahorrar dinero y lostransmitirá solamente si hay un voluntario disponible para operar elequipo. Pues bien, la semana pasada Bill Collins estaba en laaudiencia listo para ofrecerse, tres concejales estaban presentes peronadie abrió la oficina del concilio para que él tuviera acceso a lascámaras. Otra cosa, la ciudad recibe fondos de Comcast de lo quenosotros pagamos mensualmente por nuestra cuenta del cable. Otrosdos operadores reciben su paga por hacer ese trabajo, ¿por quéentonces solamente ciertas reuniones se ven?
La transparencia debe ser exigida.

The battle has been brewing for quite a long time as to whetherthe boards and sub-committee meetings should be televised in theCity of Lawrence. We believe that very important decisions are madeat those times and the public should be aware of everything thatmoves in their neighborhoods before things happen.
Televising the meetings brings the issues into their homes and itis a blessing. Some of us don’t have the luxury to spend hours atCity Hall; others are deprived of the ability to travel for many differentreasons. That’s why we have the technology! Some chairmen haveexpressed a desire not to have their meetings televised but we insistthat they should not have a choice.
Now the excuse is that the city wants to save money and willonly broadcast the meetings if a volunteer is available to operate theequipment. Well, last week Bill Collins was in the audience ready tovolunteer, three councilors were present and no one opened thecouncil office so that he could have access to the cameras. Also, thecity receives funds from Comcast from what we as subscribers payevery month in our cable bill. Two other operators get paid for doingthat job, why then only certain meetings get shown?
Transparency is a must!

Uno de los aspectos más importantesde toda comunidad es gozar de una buenasalud y de contar con recursos ymecanismos que promuevan políticasidóneas en beneficio de una mejor calidadde vida.
Sin dudas que este es el principalfundamento del Mayor’s Task Health Force(MHTF) y de cada una de lasorganizaciones y agencias allírepresentadas.
El pasado viernes, 26 de enero, el MHTFbajo el lema “Mejorando el Acceso alCuidado de Salud a través de laColaboración” realizó una Cumbre de Salud,en el salón de conferencias de Sal’sRestaurant con la finalidad de analizar loslogros alcanzados por el mismo desde sucreación y celebrar los progresos que hanconseguido.
A todo esto se agrega que el HealthSummit del 2007 tuviera como meta avanzaren incluir en su agenda la nueva era de unareforma en el cuidado de salud.
En la actividad que fue realizada de9am-2pm, miembros de entidades que sededican a educar a la comunidad sobre loscuidados de salud y proveer lasherramientas necesarias para disfrutar deun mejor estilo de vida. Allí hablaron desdediferentes perspectivas sobre la necesidadde que en Massachusetts se ponga enmarcha una ley que promueva una reformade salud que permita poner mayor atencióna las discrepancias del cáncer y a una mejorinvestigación científica.
El 17 de enero del 2003, el Mayor’sHealth Task Force, auspició la primeracumbre de salud a todo lo ancho de laciudad. En ese entonces, proveedores decuidado de salud, legisladores y líderescomunitarios se enfocaron en determinar lasprioridades de salud.
En el 2002 el Alcalde de la Ciudad deLawrence Michael J. Sullivan se reunió conun grupo de profesionales del sector de lasalud para conformar una organizacióndentro de su administración enfocada abuscar alternativas y detectar los principalesproblemas en el área de la salud queconciernen a la comunidad en general.
Formalmente, el grupo se crea en el 2003bajo el nombre Mayor’s Health Task Forcey su trabajo está dirigido a llevar educacióny crear conciencia en la comunidad encuanto a la salud pública.
En ese tiempo, solo dos latinasconformaban el grupo: Milagros Grullon,quien fue designada por el alcalde comocoordinadora del mismo y Niurka Aybar.
Aybar recibió un reconocimientodurante la actividad por su trabajo dentrodel MHTF.
El alcalde Michael J. Sullivan, se refirióa los logros del MHTF y los esfuerzos decada una de las agencias en llevar un mensajeclaro sobre el cuidado de salud, destacó laimportancia de trabajar juntos por unacomunidad más saludable, por un Lawrencecon mejor calidad de vida.

Manifestó que este estado estaconsiderado como uno de los lugares conmejor perspectiva de salud pública.
Meehan dijo sentirse halagado de queLawrence se haya convertido en la primeraciudad en el estado en poner en marcha unainiciativa de esta categoría, (MHTF) la cualpodría ser imitada en otras ciudades.

La nieve no fue un impedimento para elVicegobernador Timothy P. Murray paraparticipar en el desayuno anual presentadopor la Cámara de Comercio del Valle deMerrimack con los alcaldes del valle. Habíauna duda de si la primera tormenta de nievelo forzara a cancelar, pero siendo deWorcester, “estamos acostumbrados a serenterrados en nieve, dos pulgadas nosignifican nada”, expresó el vicegobernadoren sus palabras de apertura.
Este fue el cuarto viaje de Murray aesta área. La primera vez, cuando fuepresentado como candidato por su amigoel Concejal at-Large y Presidente delConcilio, Patrick J. Blanchette. El segundofue como vicegobernador-electo, cuandovino a dar las gracias en una breve visitadurante una función de recaudación defondos para Blanchette, y la tercera, desdeluego, cuando junto al Gobernador DevalPatrick visitaron Merrimack College en laFiesta de la Victoria.
Murray se impresionó mucho con laasistencia. Más de 300 personas sereunieron en Andover Country Club elviernes, 19 de enero, 2007, en una fríamañana invernal para escuchar a susalcaldes en lo que el vicegobernador calificóde colaboración. “Es una palabra muyimportante, es de la única forma de que lascosas se hagan a cualquier nivel, en la casa,en el negocio y en el gobierno, y envuelvecomunicación e interacción”, dijo Murray.

Estimado Dr. Pano: El mes pasado le diagnosticaron cáncer de mama a mi mamá. Estoy muy preocupada y no sé si yo lo tenga en el futuro.
Lamento lo del cáncer de su mamá, es un diagnóstico atemorizante difícil de aceptar. Al igual que muchas enfermedades, el cáncer de mama definitivamente incluye factores genéticos (relacionados con la familia). Sin embargo, existen muchísimos factores que aumentan o disminuyen la probabilidad de que tenga cáncer de mama, y algunos están bajo su control. Los factores de riesgo como los antecedentes familiares son simplemente eso, factores de riesgo. Hay muchas personas sin factores de riesgo y tienen cáncer de mama, mientras que otras tienen un “riesgo alto” y no lo padecen. Pero no se equivoque, cuando se trata de su salud, usted controla muchas cosas. Simplemente porque a su madre le diagnosticaron cáncer no significa que el ejercicio, la dieta y el estrés no influyan en su salud y el riesgo de tener cáncer. De igual modo, si fuma, ¡deje de hacerlo! Así disminuirá el riesgo de padecer cáncer de mama, además de tener muchos otros beneficios para la salud. Consulte a su médico acerca de estos y otros factores para que tenga una idea más clara de sus factores de riesgo. Es muy importante que se haga una mastografía cada año.
Estimado Dr. Pano: Todos los inviernos me dan gripes muy fuertes y acabo pasando mucho tiempo en cama sin ir a trabajar. ¿Cómo puedo acabar con este ciclo tan horrible?
No cabe duda que la gripe cobra su cuota. Cada año, miles de personas se enferman de gripe con gravedad variable. Algunas personas sienten garganta irritada, fiebre, cansancio y dolormuscular, pero otras tienen síntomas más serios que dan como resultado enfermedades que ponen en peligro la vida.
Tiene razón en que cuando le da gripe, lo mejor es tomarlo con calma, ya que evita que se fortalezca el virus. La forma más eficaz de evitarla es vacunarse antes de que empiece la temporada de gripes. La vacuna será una prevención contra la gripe o, si se enferma, será menos fuerte, aunque la vacuna no evita resfriados ni otras enfermedades.
Hay otras cosas fáciles y eficaces que puede hacer para evitar la gripe como lavarse con frecuencia las manos, dormir y comer bien. ¡Buena suerte en su lucha por evitar la gripe este invierno!

Estimado Dr. Pano: Algunos conocidos saben que tengo hipertensión y se alarman mucho, pero no me voy a morir de eso, ¿o sí?
De hecho, la hipertensión se conoce como “el asesino silencioso”, con lo que quiere decirse que muchas personas no saben que la padecen porque tiene pocos síntomas e incluso quienes lo saben, rara vez reciben tratamiento. Una hipertensión no tratada puede provocar un infarto, embolia, insuficiencia renal y insuficiencia cardiaca que llegan a ser mortales. Las personas que saben que tienen hipertensión deben consultar regularmente al médico, hacer ejercicio, controlar su dieta y, sobre todo, no fumar. Las personas que no son hipertensas pero que están en riesgo de tenerla, deben revisarse periódicamente las concentraciones de colesterol y presión arterial. Si no sabe si está en riesgo, debe consultar a su proveedor de atención médica. La hipertensión no le impide tener una larga vida, pero si no la atiende, podría acortarla.
El éxito fue dulce – literalmente – para cuatro estudiantes Artes Culinarias de laEscuela Técnica de Greater Lawrence que prepararon y sirvieron pasteles a principios deeste mes en el Gran Vestíbulo de la Casa de Estado el día de la inauguracióngubernamental. Emmanuel Vasquez, Sheila Schlesinger, Cristóbal Poe y Dyanna Ortega,junto con Líder de Grupo de Servicio Heidi Riccio, viajó a la Casa de Estado el 4 de eneropara servir pasteles a centenares de constituyentes que hicieron cola para estrechar lamano del recién elegido Gobernador Deval Patrick.
Los estudiantes de GLTS tuvieron la oportunidad de conocer al nuevo Gobernador ytener su foto tomada con la esposa de gobernador, la Sra. Diane Patrick, y con laRepresentante Estatal Barbara L’Italien (D- 18vo de Essex).
Greater Lawrence Tecnical School fue una de 16 escuelas técnicas a través del estadoque tomó parte en esta actividad gubernamental.

Parecería que este 26 de enero, fechainolvidable para los dominicanossucumbiera ante las bajas temperaturas delpasado viernes. Sin dudas que para muchosla fecha pasó desapercibida y junto al olvidodel natalicio del patricio Juan Pablo Duarte,quedó perdido en un enero friolento esesentimiento patriótico que identifica a losdominicanos.
Pese al olvido de unos cuantos, ungrupo de entusiastas dominicanosdesafiaron el clima y recordaron la grandezade un hombre cuyos ideales prevalecen porencima de la indiferencia de algunos.
El pasado viernes, la Tertulia Don PedroMir que coordina el poeta César SánchezBeras realizó en Casa Dominicana unencuentro para recordar el 194 aniversariodel nacimiento del más grande hombre queha parido la República Dominicana: JuanPablo Duarte.
La actividad no se circunscribió a laconcebida conferencia sobre el legado, vida,obra y muerte de Duarte; sino que presentóa un Duarte, precursor de la filosofía, amantede la poesía y una figura que hay querescatar.
El sacerdote Joel Almonó nos habló deun Duarte y sus ideas bifurcadas en su almade poeta, permitiéndonos conocer al patriciomás allá de sus ideales de libertad.
Almonó señaló dos facetas queidentificaron a Duarte. Estas fueron susideas filosóficas y sus pálpitos poéticos,“los cuales eran volcanes que estallabanen lavas de palabras y fuego salpicados derojo amor a la Patria y a los hombres”.
El expositor recordó que a su regresoal país en 1833, Duarte se dedicó a la tareade buscar a sus amigos para explicarles lanecesidad de crear conciencia y organizaral pueblo para conquistar la libertad y hacerde la patria el hogar de los quisqueyanos.
“Juan Pablo Duarte creó dosinstrumentos idóneos para esos fines, la
Trinitaria la cual tenía un doble enfoque: elteológico y el político. Trinitaria viene detres y hace alusión al número místico tres,que engloba la Santísima Trinidad”, dijo.
Añade el religioso que la SantísimaTrinidad fue precisamente el lema que elamante de las libertades utilizó paraencabezar el juramento trinitario.
Consideró además que cuando lasbotas del ejército español mancillaron elsuelo patrio, debido a que el entreguitaPedro Santana, permitió el ultraje a ladignidad de la nación. Las represionesbrotaron por doquier y el concepto denación apareció en los labios del Patricio yen el exilio su poema “Canto de Guerra”.
“Hoy día encontramos a muchosSantanas que no solo la entregan sino queolvidan que es la madre nación, madre patria,madre libertad, madre epopeya, madre futuroy la madre de nuestros nietos, ella es la
Nación Dominicana”, apuntó.En el evento el historiador Jorge Tapia
habló sobre la descendencia de Duarte y surelación con el tirano Pedro Santana.
Mientras, Juan Alberto Felipe escritordominicano residente en Boston leyó variospoemas dedicados a Duarte. En uno de esospoemas su autor cuestiona el papel jugadopor la historia y el afán de presentar a Duarteomnipotente e inalcanzable.
“Debemos de realizar una labor derescate de la figura de Duarte, la cual hasido escondida, para que no podamosimitarla”, dijo Felipe y asegura que Duarte,no fue un semidiós y que trató de darnosuna independencia que fue secuestradaantes de nacer.

El poema termina diciendo:Crecía contigo creyendo conocerteAhora, Duarte Padre de la Patria,Ahora que he crecido… te entiendo…En este nuevo tiempo, nos toca… desde losdientes hasta la sangreRescatar la patria… la patria separadaque dejasteRescatar la patria, independizarla ylibertarlaAhora te entiendo… Duarte padre de lapatria.

El pasado domingo, 28 de enero, el díaantes que el administrador municipal deLowell Bernie Lynch y otros líderes de laciudad lanzaran el plan de 10 años de laciudad para eliminar la falta de viviendas,más de 100 miembros del clero local y líderesdel Proyecto del Valle de Merrimack (MVP)se reunieron de 6 a 7 P.M. en el césped de laIglesia Episcopal de St. Anne en el centrode Lowell en una vigilia al aire libre y serviciode oración. El servicio tuvo lugar en apoyoa las metas del administrador municipalquien tiene como meta terminar la falta devivienda, mientras que lo desafía a asegurarque incluirá viviendas económicas cuandolos planes sean confirmados para lareurbanización del Distrito del Canal deHamilton este febrero.

De no ser así sóloharía la falta de viviendas y albergue peoresproblemas en nuestra ciudad peor”.
La Ciudad de Lowell trabajaactualmente en planes para lareurbanización del Jackson/Appleton/Middlesex St. (JAM Plan) área del centrocomercial, incluyendo el Distrito de 15 acresdel Canal de Hamilton en la Calle de Jackson.El Plan original de la JAM menciona eldesarrollo de más de 1000 condominios deuso mixto con precio del mercado y sininclusión de viviendas razonables.
Hay casi una docena de cuarterías en
el área del Plan de la JAM. Muchosresidentes de estas casas han dicho que siellos son desplazados por lareurbanización—si sus propietarios vendeno si sus alquileres suben a causa delaburguesamiento—ellos no tendrán ningúnotro lugar a donde ir a parar sino a losrefugios o a “Tent City” (la Ciudad deTiendas de Campañas), una comunidad depersonas sin hogar que viven en tiendas decampañas en los bancos del Río deMerrimack.

Recientemente una publicación latinalocal se lamentaba en términos inflamatoriosy racistas del desarrollo del edificio de WoodMill por Robert Ansin. La autora especulóque esto daría entrada a unos 500 a 600residentes blancos en Lawrence. Laescritora estaba muy disgustada porqueesta migración blanca anticipada en nuestraciudad afectaría mucho la participaciónlatina en elecciones futuras, lo cualasegurará la victoria para candidatosblancos y derrota para los candidatoslatinos. Aún más, ella insinuó que lasunidades residenciales en el Wood Mill sonvaloradas en un nivel para mantener a loslatinos afuera porque, como la escritoraindicó, los latinos no pueden comprar a talesprecios. Asombrosamente estossentimientos fueron resonados enprogramas en español en la radio localdespués de su publicación.
Yo siempre quedo desconcertado de loslenguajes racistas de escritores latinoscomo esta que piensan que hay unaconspiración grande entre los blancos parabloquear a los latinos del proceso político.Aparentemente la falta de éxito político enlas urnas no es debido a la falta de
candidatos calificados sino a un planmaestro al estilo del Klan inventado y puestoen marcha por los supervisores blancos enel ayuntamiento y en nuestros vecindarios.(Estoy seguro que no entenderán elsarcasmo).
Leí los comentarios impresos variasveces e hice que otros los leyeran por igualpara cerciorarme de que vi las cosascorrectamente. Sólo el rugir de un cerebroconfundido y amargo de un fanático podríarelacionar uno de los proyectos másambiciosos de desarrollo económico quenuestra ciudad haya visto en mucho tiempocon una tentativa racista tan abierta comopara desentrañar la participación latina enel proceso electoral.
Sólo en Lawrence podemos encontrarataques en un proyecto económico multi-millonario fundado privadamente, que todosesperamos que revitalizará la economía dela ciudad, aunque vale mencionar que notiene ninguna garantía de éxito, que seaobjeto de términos diseñados para inflamary ventilar las emociones racistas dentro dela comunidad latina contra sus vecinosblancos. Esto en una ciudad que ayudó anuestro estado a elegir al primer gobernador
negro en nuestra historia. Esto en unaciudad que hace todo lo que sea necesariopara cumplir con los mandatos federales yestatales con tal de ayudar a los votanteslatinos en el proceso de las elecciones. Estoen una ciudad que ha presenciado un saltoenorme en el número de propietarios latinosdebido a la expansión del programa paraprimeros compradores de viviendas de laciudad.
Aún más asombroso es el silencio de lacomunidad latina al no denunciar estasobservaciones. Me duele ver la aceptaciónaparente de esta racialmente motivadainvención, la cual no tiene el fin de unirnosen un propósito común para mejorar nuestraciudad sino diseñada para solamente dividirnuestra comunidad aún más. Imagínese lareacción si un blanco profesa la idea quenosotros no podemos dejar mudar a máslatinos porque ellos se apoderarán denuestra política.

HAZ UN PLANNo es solamente importante desarrollarun plan para las metas de la vida a largoplazo, sino también para las metas a cortoplazo. A largo plazo, pregúntate dóndequisieras estar en los próximos cinco, diezo 20 años. Si tu meta es a corto plazo,pregúntate donde quieres estar en el plazode un año, ya que afectará a otras metasfinancieras, como la compra de una casao de un automóvil. Una vez que sepas loque es importante, puedes empezar apensar en los pasos que se necesitaránpara lograr tus metas. El clero y los líderes del Proyecto delValle de Merrimack se han reunido ya dosveces con Bernie Lynch el administradormunicipal para pedirle que comience elproceso de la aplicación para un Capítulo40R (Crecimiento Inteligente) dezonificación para el área del JAM Plan antesque el contratista para el Distrito del Canalde Hamilton sea escogido en las próximaspocas semanas. En diciembre, líderes deMVP entregaron 500 cartas de miembros delas congregaciones de la fe y sindicatos quevisitaron al administrador municipalpidiéndole empezar el proceso de laaplicación 40R.
“Nosotros no estamos pidiendo a laciudad que haga más viviendas razonables,”Frace dijo, “le proponemos una situación
en que todos ganan, donde las personas dela ciudad podrían obtener más viviendasrazonables, y por la financiación 40R, laciudad podría obtener más dinero para eldesarrollo del JAM Plan”.
El plan requiere que el 20% de todaslas viviendas nuevas sean económicas, ybasada en el JAM Plan original con 1000nuevas viviendas que traerían hasta $3.6millones en fondos del estado a la ciudad.Otras ciudades y pueblos en el Valle deMerrimack, incluyendo Haverhill y NorthAndover, han solicitado para proveerproyectos semejantes de reurbanización.
La Ciudad tiene en la actualidad $8millones de déficit este año fiscal y seenfrenta a cortes de servicios críticosincluyendo a la policía, para balancear elpresupuesto. Pero aún con los estímulosfinancieros, el administrador municipaltodavía no se ha comprometido a solicitaruna planilla para zonificación bajo 40R.
Los líderes de MVP se han reunidotambién con varios concejales de la Ciudadde Lowell. Por lo pronto, los ConcejalesRita Mercier, Bud Caulfield y Jim Milinazzose han comprometido a apoyar el 20% deviviendas razonables en el JAM Plan. ElConcejal George Ramirez dijo que él no creedebe haber viviendas de ninguna clase enel JAM Plan, pero de haberlas él apoyaráque aparten el 20% de las unidades comounidades económicas para hacer el proyectoelegible para 40R.
El 30 de enero el Departamento dePlanificación y Desarrollo de la Ciudad delLowell recibió las aplicaciones finales detres compañías que potencialmentepudieran conseguir el contrato para elDistrito del Canal de Hamilton: TrinityFinancial of Boston; Struever Brothers,Eccles & Rousse of Baltimore; y unapropuesta conjunta por Leyland Allianceand Cornisa Associates. Los líderes deMVP creen que será más fácil de obtenervivienda razonable en el Distrito si la Ciudadnegocia esto como parte de la venta a lasempresas constructoras en las próximassemanas.

UN PUNTO DE VISTA

El día doce dediciembre próximopasado mi madrehubiera celebrado sunoventa y cuatroaniversario. En esamisma fecha hacecuarenta y un años, ala relativamente joven
edad de cincuenta y tres, fue extraída enuna camilla del cuarto de operaciones de unhospital en Boston donde le habíanencontrado un tumor de un ovario que lamataría aproximadamente nueve meses mástarde. Desde luego, esas son las realidadesde la vida. Estamos acostumbrados a ellas,no nos gusta, pero tenemos que aceptarlas.Nadie está inmune a esa realidad. Unocontinúa con su vida y sus memorias hastaun día en que ambas se disuelven también.Eso es lo que llamamos existencia.
Esta pasada semana, sin embargo, tuvela oportunidad de recordar a mi madre deuna manera algo diferente. En una brevevisita familiar a Miami, Florida, me enteréque una prima maternal de quien estuve muycercano por muchos años anteriores, sehallaba hospitalizada. Hacía poco la habíandiagnosticado de cáncer avanzado en unpulmón y había sufrido recientemente unepisodio de su epilepsia crónica que la forzóa ingresar en la unidad de cuidado intensivodel hospital.
Encontrarme de nuevo con estaenvejecida mujer fue una experiencia muyemotiva. Ella siempre ha sido una personamuy vivaracha y despreocupada quedesplegaba constantemente una sonrisacontagiosa y brillante bajo sus grandes ydulces ojos azules, una rareza en nuestrafamilia de ojos castaños. Ayudaba acualquiera sin vacilarlo y ha estado casadacon el mismo hombre por los últimoscincuenta y tres años, un marido que ahoraconfronta con cierta desesperación lapenosa decisión de colocar a su amadaesposa en un sistema de soporte de vidaartificial que seguramente se la hará máslarga al alto costo de su calidad.
Cuando se nos permitió a mi esposa y am entrar a la habitación de mi prima parauna breve visita, la enfermera tuvo quechequear su brazalete de identificación paracerciorarnos que ella era la persona queestábamos buscando. Ni mi esposa ni yopudimos reconocer en su expresión débil ycansada al pariente vivaz con quiencelebrábamos festividades de familia en unpasado lejano. Nos miró con muchacuriosidad y finalmente, abriendo más suscansados ojos azules con sorpresa, fuecapaz de reconocernos y llamarnos pornuestros nombres. Bajo esas condicionesde pena y tristeza comenzó una visita conalguien que había sido una persona muydiferente en un pasado distante y feliz.
Después que dejamos atrás la permitidabreve visita en el hospital, me vino a la mentela persona que había comenzado esa relacióncon esta prima que obviamente seencuentra ahora al final de su jornada: mimadre. Pero esa fue la madre que yo noconocí, no la madre que conocí. Casi porfuerza de gravedad decidí entonces explorardentro de las memorias de quien fue mimadre, de donde había venido en mi vida ycuanto de esa persona fue partícipe en el
éxito que ahora disfruto como ser humano.Sufrido y difícil de hacer, pero invito a mislectores a que miren dentro de ustedesmismos donde seguramente encontraránuna persona similar con la que han estadoen contacto en sus vidas pero cuyoheroísmo no conocieron directamente. Unpoco de historia podría ayudar.

Tampocopuedo vincularme con mi abuela materna.Ella se casó de nuevo y llegó a tener doshijos más hasta que también murió derepente. Mi madre tenía once añosentonces. Era esa unaépoca en que las personas se unían los unoscon los otros porque lo único que teníaneran esos unos y otros y estoy convencidoque su padrastro hizo todo lo que pudotambién para no faltarle a esos huérfanos,aunque los detalles obviamentesobrehumanos de cómo lo hizo nuncaconocí o tengo disponible para contar enesta historia.
Los años han pasado; los de mi madredesafortunadamente muy rápidos. Mi vida,con su apoyo y amor inicial a mi lado hallegado a pináculos que siempre he miradocon orgullo. Pero pensando en esa asustadaniña de seis años y después de once quenunca conocí y que obviamente tomódecisiones de esperanza y amor para viviruna vida de dedicación que eventualmenteme tocó a mí y a mi hermana como madreadulta, me hizo reconocer que no estamossolos en este mundo; que no somosnosotros solamente los creadores sinotambién los beneficiarios de nuestrodestino. Me sonrío cuando pienso en losdeditos pequeños y frágiles de una niñaasustada de seis años que tuvo fuerzatodavía para jugar un papel tan importanteen moldear la arcilla que es hoy día laescultura de mi vida.

Theodor “Ted” Seuss Geisel (1904-1991), better known tothe world as Dr. Seuss, was born in Springfield, MA. Afterattending Dartmouth and Oxford, Ted returned to Springfieldwhere he began his career as an illustrator for SaturdayEvening Post, Life, and Vanity Fair. With the release of TheCat in the Hat in 1957, he became a genre-defining children’sbook author and illustrator. His honors included two Academyawards, two Emmys, a Peabody, and the Pulitzer Prize.
The Geisel house was demolished several years agodespite its landmark status. “My children are huge fans of Dr.Seuss, and we had recently read The Lorax,” said RobertAnsin, CEO of sustainable development companyMassInnovation. “I realized that it would be wonderful to havea tangible connection to this great man and his ideas, and tobe able to share this with the public.”
The Lorax (1971) is an allegory about the conflict betweenindustry and ecology. The Lorax is a “mossy, bossy” creaturewho “speaks for the Truffula trees” because “the trees haveno voice” and the Once-ler is a short-sighted businessmanwho carelessly destroys the local environment in his quest forprofit and by doing so puts his own company out of business.
“For me, the message of The Lorax was that what’s goodfor the environment can also be good for business,” saidAnsin.
The Lorax has special resonance for Ansin, who isconverting Lawrence’s iconic Wood Mill into Monarch on theMerrimack, 600 luxury riverside lofts built on sustainabledevelopment principles. Monarch incorporates a number offeatures that would make the Lorax proud, from a ‘green roof’featuring indigenous plantings, to the transformation of thecurrent parking lot into an 8 acre waterfront park designed byCopley Wolff, who is designing the Boston’s Rose KennedyGreenway.
Monarch will be powered by geothermal exchange; nofossil fuels will be burned to heat or cool the building. Beyondthe cost savings to homeowners (it is 30-50% cheaper thanconventional systems), each loft that uses geoexchangereduces greenhouse gases by the equivalent of planting anacre of trees each year. “When Monarch is complete, theenvironmental impact of its 600 geothermal lofts will be theequivalent of planting 600 acres of trees each year,” saidAnsin.
No word on how that converts to Truffula trees.When the mill was built in 1906, it was the largest building
of its kind on the planet – almost a third of a mile long withalmost 30 acres under one roof. Even today, it is described as a‘horizontal skyscraper.’ The doors from Dr. Seuss’ childhoodhome will be incorporated into Monarch’s art gallery space,where there are monthly cultural and environmental events.Ansin will hold a reading of The Lorax at the Mill as part ofthe events to be held at Monarch on Earth Day 2007.

Snow was not a deterrent for LieutenantGovernor Timothy P. Murray to participate atthe Annual Merrimack Valley Mayors andTown Managers Breakfast, presented by theMerrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce. Itwas a concern that the first snow of theseason might force him to cancel, but beingfrom Worcester, “we are used to be buriedwith snow; a couple of inches meantnothing”, expressed the Lt. Governor in hisopening remarks.
This was the fourth trip to the area forMurray. His first was when he was introducedas a candidate by his old friend, Councilor at-Large and City Council President Patrick J.Blanchette. His second, as Lt. Governor-elect,he paid a brief thank-you visit duringBlanchette’s last fundraising event, and ofcourse, he participated with Governor DevalPatrick in the Victory Party held at MerrimackCollege.
Murray was impressed with the crowd.More than 300 showed to the AndoverCountry Club on Friday, January 19, 2007, on awintry weather morning to listen to theirmayors and town managers to what the Lt.Governor called -partnership. “Is an importantword, is the only way which things get doneat any level, household, business and ingovernment, and involves communication andinteraction”, said Murray.
Murray was pleased with the work of theMVCC in getting the business communitytogether and communicating among eachother and above all, being enthusiastic, whilerecognizing that while we have real financialchallenges, we do have tremendousopportunities in the Merrimack Valley and inthe state.

There have already been discussionsamong the mayors in the region to start a
Merrimack Valley Mayors Coalition, modeledon the very successful Metropolitan MayorsCoalition representing the mayors and citymanagers of the metropolitan Boston regionthat he and others started in 2001. Thepurpose of the coalition would be to startdeveloping greater coordination and resourcesharing of the municipalities in the MerrimackValley, and also to pool our political clout aselected officials to fight for and obtain theresources we need to meet our collectivechallenges.
We would coordinate our activities withthe Merrimack Valley Economic DevelopmentCouncil and this group, the Merrimack ValleyChamber of Commerce to collaborate andcoordinate the resources in the valley tomaintain our economic vitality and strength.
Consider this, imagine combining thepolitical clout of a mayors coalition, with thetechnical planning abilities of the MerrimackValley Planning Commission, along with theMerrimack Valley Economic DevelopmentCouncil’s ability to bring to bear the economicresources needed and the networking abilityof the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerceto ensure the economic benefits spread out tothe entire region. We will light up this cornerof Massachusetts.
I am confident that if we do this, theMerrimack Valley will be the shining economicsuccess story of Massachusetts over the nextfive to ten years.”

To the Editor,
Recently a local Latino publicationbemoaned in inflammatory racist terms thedevelopment of the Wood Mill by RobertAnsin. The writer speculated that thedevelopment would lead to an influx of500-600 white residents into Lawrence.The writer was rather upset that thisanticipated white migration into our citywould greatly offset Latino participationin future elections, thereby ensuringvictory for white candidates and defeatfor Latino candidates. Further, the writerinsinuated that the residential units at theWood Mill are priced at a level to keepLatinos out, because, as the writer stated,Latinos cannot afford to buy at suchprices. Amazingly these sentiments wereechoed on local Spanish radioprogramming after their publication.
I am always bemused at the racistrantings of a Latino writer like this whofeel there is some grand conspiracyamongst whites to shut Latinos out ofthe political process. Apparently the lackof political success at the polls is due tonot a lack of qualified candidates but tosome Klan-like master plan cooked up andput into motion by the white overseers atCity Hall and in our neighborhoods. (I amsure the sarcasm here will be lost on them.)
I read the printed comments severaltimes and had others read it as well tomake sure I saw things correctly. Onlythe howling of a bitter, brain addled bigotcould equate one of the most ambitiouseconomic development projects our cityhas seen in some time with an overt racistattempt to disembowel Latinoparticipation in the electoral process.
Only in Lawrence could we find
attacks on a privately funded, multi-milliondollar economic project that one hopeswill revitalize our city’s economy, albeitwith no guarantee of success, stated interms designed to inflame and fan racistemotions within the Latino communityagainst their white neighbors. This in acity that helped our state elect the firstblack governor in our history. This in acity that bends over backwards to complywith federal and state mandates onassisting Latino voters in the electionprocess. This in a city that has witnesseda large jump in Latino homeownershipdue to the expansion of the city andstate’s first-time homebuyer programs.
Even more astounding is the silencefrom the Latino community in denouncingthese remarks. I am struck by the apparentacceptance of such racially motivatedinvective, stated not to unite us in acommon purpose to improve our city butdesigned merely to split our communityfurther apart. Imagine the reaction if awhite proffered the idea that we cannothave more Latinos moving in becausethey will take over our politics.

Emmanuel Vasquez, Sheila Schlesinger,Christopher Poe and Dyanna Ortega, along with Service Cluster Leader Heidi Riccio,traveled to the State House on January 4 to serve pastries to hundreds of constituentswho stood in line to shake the hand of newly elected Governor Deval Patrick.The Greater Lawrence students got the chance to meet the new Governor, and have theirphoto taken with the governor’s wife, Mrs. Diane Patrick, and state representative BarbaraL’Italien (D- 18th Essex).Greater Lawrence Technical School was one of 16 technical schools throughout theCommonwealth that participated in the gubernatorial event.

Niurka Aybar has been named to thenewly created position of assistant directorfor community relations for Northern EssexCommunity College in Lawrence.
Aybar, who is bilingual and biculturaland has extensive experience in communityoutreach in Lawrence, is working withindividuals, businesses, organizations andagencies to identify educational needs inthe community and determine how NorthernEssex can address them.
“My goal is to get connected withpeople who can benefit from the college,”said Aybar. “I’m working with the college’slongtime partners to strengthen and growour relationships. I’m also creating newpartnerships that will benefit the city ofLawrence and its residents, whether theyare high school students, newly arrivedimmigrants, or longtime residents.”
Aybar promotes and facilitatesworkshops on Intro to college and financialaid for community based organizations,represents the college at cultural andcommunity events, serves on a number oflocal community boards, and works withlocal neighborhood associations. She wasrecently elected secretary of the board ofdirectors of the Lawrence Cultural Allianceand is coordinating new initiatives for thecollege with community agencies such asthe Boys and Girls Club, HERC (HigherEducation Resource Center), LawrenceCommunity Works, and GEAR UP.
Aybar is well aware of Northern EssexCommunity College and the benefits itprovides. A native of the DominicanRepublic, she enrolled in developmentalEnglish courses at the college aftergraduating from Lawrence High School.After receiving an associate degree inbusiness transfer from Northern Essex, shetransferred to Merrimack College where sheearned a bachelor degree in businessadministration with a concentration inaccounting. She is currently working onher master’s in economic and socialdevelopment at U.Mass/Lowell.
“Like many immigrants, I needed todevelop my language skills before I couldmove forward with my education,” saysAybar. “I will always be grateful thatNorthern Essex gave me that opportunity.It was a great place to start on my degree as

Last December12 my mother wouldhave celebrated her 94th
b i r t h d a y .Unfortunately shedidn’t. On that sameday forty one yearsago, at a relativelyyoung age of 53, she
was rolled out of an operating room in aBoston hospital where they had found anovarian tumor that killed her almost ninemonths to the day of that discovery. Ofcourse, that is the stuff that life is made of.We are used to it; don’t like it but have toaccept it. No one is immune to that reality.You move on with your life and yourmemories until one day both go awaythemselves. That is what we call existence.
This past week though, I had anopportunity to remember my mother in adifferent sort of way. On a short family visitto Miami, Florida, I found that a maternalfirst cousin I had known and being close tofor many years was in the hospital. Sherecently was diagnosed with lung cancerand had suffered a serious episode of herchronic epilepsy that landed her in theintensive care unit of the hospital.
Meeting this elderly woman again wasquite an emotional experience. She hasalways been a vivacious, friendly happy golucky type of person who displayed a brightsmile under big sweet blue eyes, a rarity inour family of brown eyes. She helpedanyone who needed it without hesitationand has been married to the same man forthe past fifty three years, a husband who isnow contemplating with a bit of despair thepossibility of placing his beloved wife on asupport system to a life that will certainlyextent its length at a high cost to its quality.
When my wife and I were allowed in fora short visit, we and the nurse had to checkher ID bracelet to make sure that she wasthe same person we were looking for.Neither my wife nor I could recognize onthat frail expression the lively relative weused to party with in yesteryear. She lookedat us with intense curiosity and finally,opening her tired blue eyes with intensity,was able to recognize us and called us by
our names. Under such conditions of painand sadness began an uncomfortable visitwith someone who had been quite anotherperson in a distant happy past.
After we left the hospital I thoughtabout the person who had started thatrelationship with this cousin who isobviously at the end of her road: my mother.But that was the mother I did not know, notthe mother I did. Almost by gravity I thendecided to delve into the memories I had ofwho my mother was, where she had comefrom in life and how much of that earlyperson is in the success I now enjoy. Hardand difficult to do, but I invite my readers tolook into yourselves and perhaps find asimilar person you may have been in touchwith in your life but whose heroism didn’treally know directly. A bit of history mighthelp me explain.
My mother was the youngest of fivebrothers and sisters who lost her fatherwhen she was only six years old. The manwas in his forties and had died suddenly.He was a grandfather person I know existedbefore my time but can’t relate to. Neithercould I do with my maternal grandmother.She remarried and went to have two morechildren until she also died unexpectedly.My mother was only eleven then. At thatpoint the older siblings, with the help of thesurviving spouse, hang together trying tokeep the whole flock including the twoyounger toddlers, close to each other. I amsure other folks, perhaps you as well, havedone the same throughout the years, but Ifind a special admiration, pride andinspiration for what those seven childrendid to remain one against all odds.
In these recent musings andspeculations triggered by the bewilderingvisit to my only maternal cousin, Ienvisioned my six year old mother lookingwith fear at the unfairness of a life without afather and a mother and becoming aware ofthat inequity perhaps accepting it withouteven questioning it. And I also imaginedher getting close to her brothers and sistersfor support and solace to face a life wherethe main older pillars had disappeared fromher existence. That was a time when peoplebanded together with each other because
all they had was each other and I am surethat her stepfather did all he could not tofail those orphans and stepped up to theplate, although the details of how he did itwas never available to me or this story.
Years have gone by, my mother’sunfortunately too fast. My life with her earlylove and support at my side has reachedpinnacles that I have always looked at withpride. But thinking about that fearful littlegirl of six and then eleven I never met whoobviously made simple decisions of hopeand love to live a life of dedication as amother that eventually touched me and myonly sister made me realize that we are notalone in this world; that we are not only themakers but also the beneficiaries of ourdestiny. I smile when I think of the fragilelittle fingers of a scared six year old that stillcould have played such a role on moldingthe clay that is today the sculpture of mylife.
I left my cousin behind convinced thatI will never see her again; not alive anyway.However, for a brief moment, a fleetinginstant, she and I got in touch with the bondthat had been established by our uncles andaunts many years before and was nowdissolving or, was it? Looking at her lively

blue eyes now hidden by the tiredexpression of her illness I was sure that shefelt better in a different kind of better. So didI for different reasons. I believe those littlefingers I never met were touching someonewith love one more time. Metaphorically,like the fireflies, she produced her own lightnot only for herself then but also for usnow. And I will never know how she did it,but she did.
And that is my point of view today.

City launches 10-year plan toend homelessness, but nocommitment yet to inclusionof affordable housing indowntown development
Last Sunday, January 28th, the daybefore Lowell City Manager Bernie Lynchand other city leaders launched the City’s10-year plan to end homelessness, over 100local clergy and lay leaders from theMerrimack Valley Project (MVP) gatheredfrom 6 to 7 PM on the lawn at St. Anne’sEpiscopal Church in downtown Lowell inan outdoor candlelight prayer service. Theservice was held to support the CityManager’s goal of ending homelessness,while challenging him to ensure inclusionof affordable housing units as plans are laidfor the redevelopment of the downtownHamilton Canal District this February.
“We share the City Manager’s goal ofending homelessness in Lowell, and we prayfor the success of his plan,” said Gail Frace,Chair of the MVP Housing Team. “But webelieve that for this goal to be met, the citymust ensure that the Hamilton Canal Districtincludes an affordable housing component.Not to do so would only make thehomelessness and housing problems in ourcity worse.”
The City of Lowell is currently workingon plans for redevelopment of the Jackson/Appleton/Middlesex Street (JAM Plan) areaof the downtown, including the 15-acreHamilton Canal District on Jackson Street.The original JAM Plan calls for mixed-usedevelopment with up to 1000 market-ratecondominiums and no inclusion ofaffordable housing.
There are nearly a dozen single-room-occupancy rooming houses in the JAM Planarea. Many residents from these houseshave said that if they are displaced by theredevelopment—if their landlords sell or iftheir rents go up because of gentrification—they will have nowhere else to go but theshelters or “Tent City,” a community ofhomeless living in tents on the bank of theMerrimack River.
“My church serves food at the St.Paul’s Kitchen at Elliot Church, where many
Lowell clergy held prayer service calling on cityto include affordable workforce housing in newdevelopment
people who live in the JAM Plan area comefor meals,” said Rev. Sharon Jones ofAldersgate Methodist Church inChelmsford. “Over time we have gotten toknow these clients well and have learnedabout their difficulty finding decent housing.I am concerned that if the Hamilton CanalDistrict and JAM Plan redevelopment moveforward without proper inclusion ofaffordable units, these developments couldexacerbate rather than alleviate housingproblems in the city.”
Clergy and leaders from the MerrimackValley Project have met twice with CityManager Bernie Lynch to ask that he beginthe application process for a Chapter 40R(Smart Growth) zoning overlay for the JAMPlan area before the master developer forthe Hamilton Canal District is chosen in thenext few weeks. In December MVP leadersdelivered 500 letters from members of faithcongregations and labor unions calling onthe City Manager to begin the 40Rapplication process.
“We are not just calling on the city todo more affordable housing,” Frace said,“we are proposing a win-win situation,where the people of the city could get moreaffordable housing, and through 40Rfunding, the city could get more money forthe JAM Plan development.”
The overlay would require that 20% ofall new housing units be affordable, andbased on the original JAM Plan with 1000new housing units that would bring up to$3.6 million in state funds to the City. Othercities and towns in the Merrimack Valley,including Haverhill and North Andover,have applied for the overlay for similarredevelopment projects.
The City is currently $8 million in thered for this fiscal year, and is faced withcutting critical services, including police,to balance the budget. But even with thefinancial incentives, the City Manager hasnot yet committed to applying for a 40R

So far CouncilorsRita Mercier, Bud Caulfield and Jim Milinazzohave committed to supporting 20%affordable housing in the JAM Plan.Councilor George Ramirez said he does notbelieve there should be any housing in theJAM Plan, but if there is housing he willsupport setting aside 20% of the units asaffordable units to make the project eligiblefor a 40R zoning overlay.
On January 30th the City of LowellDepartment of Planning & Developmentreceived final applications from threepotential master developers of the HamiltonCanal District: Trinity Financial of Boston;Struever Brothers, Eccles & Rouse ofBaltimore; and a joint proposal by LeylandAlliance and Cornish Associates. MVPleaders believe it will be easier to getaffordable housing in the District if the Citynegotiates this as part of the sale to themaster developer in the next few weeks.

EMILIJA PLIATERYTE: A HEROINEOF 1831 UPRISING
Emilija Plateryte (Emilia Plater) (1806-1831) acquired world fame as a militaryheroine. She became one of the symbols ofthe armed uprising of 1831 against Russia’srule in Lithuania and Poland. The symbol ofthe fighting girl became quite widespreadboth in Poland, Lithuania and abroad.
Countess Emilija Pliateryte (EmiliaPlater) was born November 13, 1806 inVilnius (Wilno), to a notable aristocraticfamily of (Pranciskus Ksaveras Pliateris)Franciszek Ksawery Plater and Anna neeMohl.
She also collected and transcribed textsand tunes of folk songs. In 1823 she stayedin Dusetos and studied the conditions ofpeasants’ life. At the same time she saw theplight of the Polish-LithuanianCommonwealth under the heel of Russia shewondered why her countrymen were notrising up to throw the oppressor out.
She was also a fan of Bobolina, awoman who became one of the icons of theGreek uprising against the Ottomans, andJoan of Arc.
In 1829 Emilija started to travelthroughout Poland, but had to return homedue to the death of her mother. After the

outbreak of the November Uprising againstImperial Russia, lands of the former GrandDuchy of Lithuania were initially unaffected
by fighting and during theopening stages there were stillno Polish units formed there.Emilija decided to form one ofthe first such partisanLithuanians units herself. Shecut her hair, prepared a uniformfor herself and organized andequipped a group of volunteers.The unit was composed ofroughly 280 infantry, 60 cavalryand several hundred peasantsarmed with war scythes.
Emilija was namedCommander of the 1st Companyof the 1st Lithuanian Regiment,known later as the 25th InfantryRegiment of the Line. Shedistinguished herself in thebattles at Kaunas and Siauliaiand was given the rank ofCaptain in the field.
She died at Justinavamanor on the 23rd of December
1831 and was buried in an unused cemeteryat Kapciamiestis, in a tomb which is still inexistence today.

The Andover/North AndoverYMCA’s Synchers synchronized swimteam dominated their season openingevent in Worcester, Massachusetts, atthe Junior/Senior Championship meetheld Sunday January 21, 2007. Thisstrong and talented team showed thefruit of their pre-season dedicationcoming home with a total of 9 gold, 5silver and 6 bronze medals in the 12events they entered.
The coveted New England SeniorTrophy returns to the Andover/NorthBranch of the Merrimack Valley YMCAfor the fifth consecutive year in a row.Sixteen experienced senior swimmerstallied the most points for a senior teamonce again securing the trophy for theSynchers.
Four Gold Medals, the Grand Slamof Synchronized Swimming, was earnedwith grace and ease by two ANASynchers; Stephanie Garcia Restrepo,17, of Billerica and Jessica Mancini, 14,of Andover. Stephanie, a seasonedcompetitor, took gold in Senior Solo,Trio, Team and Figures. Jessica, new tothis level of competition, showed herskill winning the gold in Junior Soloand Figures, as well as Senior Duet andTeam.
Showing great promise the youngand talented 13-15 Age Groupswimmers placed tops in Team and Trioevents. The 13-15 Trio of CaitlynMacGregor, 14, Alyson Ziel, 13, of NorthAndover, and Candace Ju, 13, ofAndover earned gold for their teamroutine, and were joined by teammatesAlice Rodgers, 13, Laina Grey, 12, SarahHiggins, 12, Elizabeth Gardell, 12, all ofNorth Andover and Marian Crockett,12, of Andover, to bring home the goldfor the Team routine.
As the team heads into thecompetition season Head CoachEugenia Gillan is confident of theirposition to excel at the Junior and SeniorZone meets scheduled for February andMarch. North Essex District of Yankee Clipper Council Boy Scoutsof America seeks gently used Cub Scout and Boy Scout shirts,uniforms, and equipment to help disadvantaged youth withinthe Merrimack Valley.
Over the past few years, the Council placed great emphasison delivering its programs and expanding Scoutingopportunities for inner-city youth. The community outreachhas been successful with dozens of children entering Scoutingprograms. Unfortunately, many new members cannot affordthe cost of Scout uniforms and equipment to allow them tocamp and otherwise participate in the programs.

The greater LawrenceFast Pitch SoftballLeague Staged its annualbanquet at the popularSavastanos Hall that waswhere the O’Neil Parkstands today and justbehind the Oliver School.
The park is named after the popular formerAlderman of Parks and Properties andformer softball player and Little Leaguebooster for many years, Jimmy O’Neil. Hisson Jimmy Jr., a fine athlete himself, ownsthe former Magoons sports store on So.Broadway and also is an officer in the SouthLawrence West Little League.
Tommy Di Resta probably the mostversatile player in the league won thePrestigious Player of the Year Award. Tommya likeable and furious competitor was a greatlittle righthanded pitcher and when nottoeing the rubber he could and would gobehind the plate and his catlike quicknessaided him when he played the outfield. Hewas one of this area’s most respected hittersand could go long or drop a bunt and hisspeed would make it hard to catch him.Tommy was good enough to play for thevaunted Monument Club of Lowell one ofthe Valley’s first traveling teams. He cameto play for me when I managed in the leagueand was the ultimate team player. He ledthe De Lucas to the league title and followedwith the winning of the playoffs.
Last season this award went to thefabled Wes Kooken who was a servicemanstationed in the area and was the firstpitcher to throw the rise ball in our area.Tom was presented the most versatile playerin the league behind Wes in that balloting.Oh, by the way, Tom’s team from Raytheonfinally beat the Kooken team with Tommyon the mound in the playoffs, it seems withDi Resta and his tantalizing motion andchange ups holding the Kooken men at bayand the Raytheon players finally adjustingto the rise ball after playing back to back toback games it was considered a big upsetand Di Resta’s team were the champs withthe playoffs victory that was in 1958.
Ted Golas won the Ed Niziak Memorialaward for sportsmanship. The commissionpresented all the awards as a crowd of over150 attended. The De Luca’s team waspresented a trophy in memory of JackLawlor, Toby Lyons and Bill Higgins for theirchampionship win. The Pontiac Club, Dan’sand the Holihans received trophies forfinishing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, in that order. TheDe Luca’s and the Pontiacs receivedindividual trophies for their winning season.
A special award went to crowd favoritewho received a standing “O” from thecrowd. Joe Abdinoor or Jojo the ball boy ashe was known was elated to get anotherbaseball jacket from his league and theplayers that he loved so much. The jackethad his name on it and the name of theleague and every banquet the commissionswould hold his award till the last and try tomake him think he wasn’t going to getsomething this time, it was comical to allwho attended to see him impatiently waitingto be called up to the head table for whatwas nor a surprise gift to him a jacket wasthe yearly prize for him.
One year someone thought that maybewith him having so many jackets that maybea change of his award would be in orderand so they got him a wristwatch which hepromptly gave to the league president andwalked away in dismay, it was the first timethis writer ever saw a voiceless man tellanyone to “stick it”. A few days later theswitch to jacket was made and Jojo wore itwith great pride.
Seated at the head table were many ofthe city’s sport luminaries including theA.S.A. area commissioner “Nick” Carter whohas since had the tennis courts on LawrenceSt. named in his memory, his son Joe was agreat sport star at LHS and later in softball,he’s retired from the L.H.A. and resides inNH these days. He can still be foundrefereeing some hoop games these days.

Joe Creeley a former player and firstbaseman in the league worked for theKenney Meat Company on Lowell St. beforegoing to and retiring from the L.H.A. HaroldWhitworth ran a very successful sportinggoods store in the area on Essex Streetwhere the Essex Towers now stands.
Alex MacBeth was the voice of sportswhen Lawrence was a loud and clear stationon W.C.C.M. owned by the legendary CurtGowdy and was famous for its clear signalon radio 800 AM, a signal that everyone inthe area could tune into and could hear.
Tom O’Neill and Jim Noble whose sonBuddy and his sister Betty are still avid highschool sports fans to this day rounded outthe head table. Sprinkled throughout thehall were many political dignitaries whocould often be seen watching these gamesat the Hayden Schofield on Lawrence St.Tom Samartaro, Joe Niziak, Emil Petralia andJohn W. Kennedy the LHS athletic directorwere invited guests.
Movies of the day were at theMerrimack Park Drive-in on the LowellBoulevard had Darby O’Gill and the Littlepeople, and Rock Hudson in Never SayGoodbye. The route 114 Drive-in where themall is today featured I’ll Cry Tomorrow withSusan Hayworth and a carnival of cartoons.The Riverview drive-in was on route 110 inHaverhill and Featured Burt Lancaster, KirkDouglas, and Laurence Oliver in The DevilsDisciple and the Fear makers with DanaAndrews and Mel Torme.
In Georgetown at the route 133 drive inBecause of Eve a story of life booked asbold and violent teens will not be admittedwith out a parent. In person was oneAlexander Leeds a noted hygienecommentator was on board to answerquestions and address the attendees. TheWamesit drive-in on Route 38 in Tewksburyhad the movie The Big Circus starring VictorMature and Rhonda Fleming and RedButtons.

An endearing young man,Joshua is eager to find a family and issure to bring years of joy to any home.
Born in November of 1990, Joshua isa confident young Latino. He lovesreading, writing, watching movies,listening to rap music and playing thedrums. In school, Joshua interacts wellwith his peers and teachers. Academically,Joshua performs at grade level and excelsin English, showing creativity andinsightfulness. Being a positive rolemodel to his friends is important toJoshua, and he has used therapy todevelop effective coping skills inaddressing his past issues.

“You will not be rewarded for enduringa greater burden than necessary whilepreparing your tax return. Using thesimplest allowable form will reduce thechance of an error that may cost you moneyor delay the processing of your return,” saidIRS spokesperson Sara Eguren.
1040EZ You may qualify touse Form 1040EZ, thesimplest form, if:• Your taxable income is below $100,000• Your filing status is Single or Married
Filing Jointly• You are under age 65• You are not claiming any dependents• Your interest income is $1,500 or less
1040A You may be able to useForm 1040A if:• Your taxable income is below $100,000• You have capital gain distributions• You claim certain tax credits• You claim deductions for IRA
contributions or student loan interest

1040 If you cannot use eithera 1040EZ or 1040A, youprobably need to use Form1040. You must file form1040 if:
