But in the midst of it all, may we stay true to the call of Advent. Let us take time to reflect on the Scriptures, as they invite us to remember God’s fulfillment of promises made by the early prophets. The scriptures invite us to focus on the work of the Holy Spirit in the story of Jesus, Mary’s openness to the annunciation, the visitation of Mary to Elizabeth, the humble birth, the adoration of the shepherds, the presentation of the infant Jesus in the Temple and to remember God’s fulfillment of promises made long ago by the prophets. Like Mary, may we ponder these miraculous events deeply in our hearts. Let us mindfully reflect on the humility of the Lord, who chose to be with us, taking flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary. This day our loving God seeks to dwell in our community and find a home in our hearts. As we prepare ourselves for the celebration of Jesus’ birth, let us make room for Him, remove everything from our lives that is contrary to love. 4th Week of Advent

As the Solemnity of the Nativity nears, there is much to do and many demands on our time. But in the midst of it all, may we stay true to the call of Advent. Let us take time to reflect on the Scriptures, as they invite us to remember God’s fulfillment of promises made by the early prophets.

Confirmation On Wednesday, January 13, 2021, at 6:00 p. m., 16 students will receive the sacrament of Confirmation. Please remember these candidates in your daily prayer. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.

Have you at times found yourself, thinking I can’t focus at Mass? I try, but my mind wanders. Why?

We are human. The human brain is constantly working. Concentrating on one thing for an hour is difficult. Distractions easily enter into our minds. With distractions come another thought. Challenge: direct your thoughts in the path you would like them to go.

As we settle into prayer, at Mass, it is less like a perfectly calm pond and more like sailing a boat on the lake. Awareness is essential: God’s grace is the wind that moves. We on the sailboat must be aware of the wind, where we are on the lake and where we are headed.

How do we clear our mind and calm our thoughts? Our goal is being attentive to whatever God is doing. In the holy sacrifice of the Mass, God is doing something incredible. When we are at Mass, it is important that we understand what is happening. If we do not clearly understand what is happening, the Mass will be either an unnecessary relic of the past or an interesting diversion.

At the heart of the Mass, Jesus’ saving action of pouring his life out to the Father is made present. His body, blood, soul and divinity are made present in the Eucharist. The Eucharist is an action. It is the action of God, the Son, pouring Himself out in love to God the Father.

The Mass is an action, not merely words. Jesus pours Himself out. The priest who speaks the words of consecration pours himself out with Jesus, in the person of Christ. He does not merely say the words. He is called to do what the words do, make the sacrificial offering of Jesus, the sinless Lamb of God, the sacrificial offering with Jesus. The priest offers up the great once-for-all sacrifice of Jesus as well as offering himself with Jesus.

When we were baptized, we were baptized into the priesthood of Christ. This means that all Christians are called to offer the sacrifice and to be the sacrifice. As the priest prays the Eucharistic Prayer, we are called to be united with each word he speaks. We are called to exercise our priesthood and with the priest, offer-up the Son, to the Father. At Mass, as a baptized Christian, we are called to pour ourselves out with the priest and with the Son to the Father. We are not just spectators. We are being conformed to the image of the Son with the priest. Focusing at Mass means one is attentive and becoming aware of what we are called to do and doing it. Remember, while the words of the holy sacrifice of the Mass are essential, the Mass is an action.

We must realize, that our distractions and services are meant to be united with Christ’s sacrifice and offered to the Father. The Mass never ends.

We bring that attitude out into the world, becoming conformed to Christ’s self-sacrificial love. Fr. Mike Schmitz, UMD Newman

Christmas Prayer

Lord, we worship and adore You. You are our wonderful

Counselor, mighty God, everlasting Father, and Prince

of Peace. As we celebrate Your birth, may we always place

You as the center of our life. Bestow upon us the gifts of

wisdom and fortitude. Thank you for being Immanuel, “God

with us.” Help us to be kind and compassionate to one

another, forgiving one another, just as You forgive us. Open our hearts to Your great love

for each other. Help us to share Your Truth and be Your light. In the Holy name of Jesus, we

pray. Amen.
