BCU Men’s Rugby 1sts v Warwick Men’s Rugby 2s

What a game, what a win!Having been plagued by injuries and players having to go to Uni on Wednesday afternoons, we didn’t know how the game was going to go. We were playing the unbeaten league leaders, who had the best defensive record in the league. We started the game with only 4 out of 15 fully fit players on the pitch. It was a nervous and cagey start to the game, both teams swapped penalties to leave it at 3-3 half way through the first half. The first break of the game came from the BCU forwards as they drove the Warwick forwards backwards, with Dominic Barnes crashing over for the first score of the game to lead 8-3. With 10 minutes left of the first half Warwick struck back with not one but two tries scored by their Wingers in the corner. The score at half time was 15-8 to Warwick, which deflated the players and heads were starting to drop but we knew we were still in the game at this point but needed to get the first score in the 2nd half. The second half started with BCU upping the intensity, every tackle was massive, fighting for every scrap of ball we could get, and this was duly paid off as Warwick got caught offside and Elgan Hughes slotted over the resulting penalty to bring us to within 4 points.

This is when our forwards turned up the heat and the game started to swing our way. The Warwick pack couldn’t handle the intensity and pressure that our front 8 were putting on them. The next score of the game showed this as BCU got awarded a scrum 15 metres from the line; the pack knew this was their chance, they pushed and heaved themselves over the line to give our Captain Luke Hickey the easiest of tries, but what an epic one it was, this was bullying at it’s finest form. The conversion was good, leaving BCU leading 18-15. Warwick struck back again shortly after, with their impressive backs cutting our line and going over in the corner again. The conversion was missed, they led by 2. We knew what we had to do to win the game and we stuck to our game plan, a clever kick to the corner gave Warwick a lineout 5 metre from their own line. The ever impressive Ben Parker took the lineout against the head, the forwards set up for a drive and fresh legs of Munya Chirapa bulldozed himself over the line with his first touch of the game, what an inspired substitution, 23-18 to BCU with 15 minutes remaining.

The remainder of the game was played down in Warwick’s 22, with the teams epic work rate keeping them pinned down there. The forwards played out the rest of the time just taking it in and recycling it phase after phase. The last score of the game, came in the last play of the game as Warwick again succumbed to the immense pressure our forwards put them under, with the ball bobbling about in their own try area, the impressive Jim Goulding was the first to react and pounced on the lose ball, giving the mighty BCU a deserved 28-20 win, ending Warwick’s unbeaten streak and ending the Year of 2009 on a massive high. Now the boys can’t wait to get their teeth into all the teams again as the return fixtures get played come January.

Birmingham City University Climbing ClubThe Year started off with a massive amount of interest from everyone at fresher’s fair and after miss spelt email addresses, loss of Fresher excitement and a realisation that you might be eternally cold while climbing resulted in us having a sign up number of about 18 - with a few more of you still to pay the membership fee!

This year the club was fully re-established after about 15 years of absence so it was a hectic start that involved purchasing lots of climbing gear and kit and getting our name out there with the local climbing walls and other university clubs.

In late November we finally got 12 of our members out on the first outdoor climbing trip for the club and everyone braved two days of wind and cold to eventually get a full day of climbing on the Sunday out in the Peak District. It was a great success despite the weather, with some people even smiling by the end!

We have a strong and consistent turn out of members at the Red Point Climbing centre on a Wednesday and a Saturday, which is were everyone learns the basic climbing knots and techniques and gains a good level of fitness. We are planning future outdoor trips in the New Year and hope to introduce some team building sessions to other clubs in the Uni.

The few of us who run the club are keen climbers who are trying to get this club up and running and to make it the best it can be. We shall hopefully see some of you soon!

BCU Men’s Hockey 1sts v De Montford Men’s Hockey 1sts

Both teams headed into the game knowing only a win would give them a good chance to win the league, and from previous results on paper this was always set out to be a close game. BCU soon found themselves 2 - 0 down, but with true BCU spirit they fought back to level 3 - 3 at half time. Some dubious decisions from the umpires went for and against both the teams but BCU quickly learned to pick up the pieces and adapt to the game, and with 10 minutes left BCU lead 6 - 4 thanks to fine finishes from Scott Mahoney taking his total for the season to 10. Outstanding defensive performances go to Rahul Raikhy and Nate Warmington. The midfield was held tight with some good movement and passing thanks to Taz Chowdhury, however, Man of The Match went to Mike Cartledge in goal for his never say die attitude to the game, even making a save with his head to ensure BCU come away with the spoils.

The men face tough opposition next week away to Wolverhampton, riding on the success of this win things look promising for the new year.

FINAL SCORE  : Birmingham City University 6 - 5 De Montford University

RAG (Raise and Give)On the Tuesday 17th November RAG held their first event of

the year, Under Water Carnage, a bar crawl in the Arcadian finishing at Oceana.

The Bar crawl sold about 650 t-shirts and managed to help raise money towards the Movember campaign. They

produced a cheque of £2000 for the cause on Friday 27th November at the Mexican themed Bonkers.

They're all really happy with the results; everyone had an awesome night and the money raised is going to a good

cause to promote prostate and testicular awareness.

Another event is in the pipeline for Beginning of February so watch this space, mean while, click here to see what else
