WELCOME Welcome kids! I’m so glad you’re here! Before we get started with today’s lesson, let’s review our room rules so that we can have the most fun. RULES (Review the room rules.) Now it’s time for us to stand up and worship God together! Let’s sing to God and let him know how much we love him. WORSHIP (Play a few worship songs for kids to sing and dance to.) Great job singing. INTRO (You need: The camping set with tent, campfire, camping chair, rainbow-colored sleeping bag rolled up, and bag filled with Bible, rainbow-colored coat, and shredded coat.) Guess what I’m doing today? I’m going camping. How many of you have ever been camping before? Cool! Well, it’s my first time and I am so excited. I have my tent, camping chair, and my campfire. Ooooh so bright and warm! Great for hot dogs and marshmallows—and for hearing campfire stories. Do you like to hear stories? Me too. I happen to have my Bible right here. (Pull Bible put of bag.) And did you know that the Bible has some of the best stories ever?! This is going to be perfect for our campfire time. Let me just set up my sleeping bag. (Unroll it, hold it up and lay it down.) See it has all the colors of the rainbow on it. Hey! The Bible story I’m going to share with you today has a coat in it that has all the colors of the rainbow, too. And boy is it fancy. I wonder who the coat belongs to. Let me get cozy in my camping chair, open the Bible, and find out. (Sit in camping chair.) BIBLE TRUTH (During the story you will be going to be getting in and out of a sleeping bag. You should practice this before telling story.) (Open Bible.) There once was a man named Jacob and he had 12 sons! Can you count to 12 with me? (1, 2, 3…12.) Great job! That’s a lot of sons! But you know what? (Bring your voice down low and quieter.) Of all of those sons, there was one that was Jacob’s favorite. He was the No. 1 son. (Hold up pointer finger.) His name was Joseph. Can you say Joseph? Good! One day, Jacob gave Joseph a brand new, fancy and terrific, great and fantastic, coat. Would you like to see it? (Pull rainbow-colored coat out of bag and put it on.) Isn’t it amazing? Joseph’s coat was beautiful! It had all the colors of the rainbow! Just like my sleeping bag. And guess what Joseph’s brothers got? Nothing! That made Joseph’s brothers upset. They wanted rich, rainbow-colored coats too! But they didn’t get any. They started to see that their dad liked Joseph more than he liked them and that made them mad. (Make an angry face and cross your arms. Get in sleeping bag.)

And things didn’t get any better. (Shake your head.) One morning Joseph woke up and as he was making breakfast … (Get out of sleeping bag.) He announced in a loud voice, “I had a dream last night brothers! I dreamed I was the greatest of us all.” When the brothers heard that, they got even more upset with Joseph. They didn’t talk to him all day. (Make an angry face and cross your arms.) And things didn’t get any better. (Lay down and cover up with sleeping bag.) The next morning Joseph woke up and as he was making breakfast … (Stand back up.) he announced again in a loud voice: “I had another dream last night brothers! I dreamed I was the king and all of you bowed down to me!” When the brothers heard that they were so upset that they wanted to kill Joseph. They made a bad plan. The next day Joseph went out to where his brothers were finding good grass for their sheep to eat to see how they were doing. He was wearing his beautiful, amazing coat. (Walk across stage strutting in coat.) And his brothers saw him coming a long ways off. (Use a mad voice.) They said, “Look at that dreamer Joseph coming with his fancy, new coat. Let’s get him.” And that’s just what they did. When Joseph came closer all those brothers jumped on Joseph and wrestled him to the ground. (Fall on ground.) They ripped off his coat. They tore the amazing and beautiful colors of the rainbow all to shreds. (Take off coat and put it back in the bag and pull out shredded coat.) Just then a parade of camels came walking by with some men on their way to sell things in a far, far, far away place called Egypt. The brothers decided to sell Joseph to be a slave in Egypt. They watched Joseph go until they could no longer could see him or the camels. (Put your hand up to your forehead as though you’re looking into the distance.) (Use sly voice.) “That’s the end of that dreamer Joseph,” they thought. They brought Joseph’s ripped up coat back to their dad. (Pick up the shredded coat.) They lied and said a wild animal ate Joseph. But is that really what happened? No. And even thought Joseph had to go far, far away—God was still with him. APPLICATION (Close Bible.) Oops, I think we better stop reading the story now. Looks like I have to go get more wood for my campfire. We can read some more next week. (Put Bible and props back into bag.)

Can you believe how upset those brothers were and what they did to Joseph? That wasn’t very nice and didn’t seem fair. Sometimes things don’t seem very fair. But God is still there. God was with Joseph and God is always with us. God is always with us! Woo hoo! (Wave arms back and forth above head.) Say that with me. (Kids repeat.) God is always with us! Woo hoo! (Wave arms back & forth above head.) One more time. (Kids repeat.) God is always with us! Woo hoo! (Wave arms back & forth above head.) Show Bible Verse Slide That sounds like our Bible verse. Listen to this: “God was with Joseph and things went very well with him.” Let’s learn that together. “God (Point up, arm extended.) was with Joseph (Cross your arms to hug yourself.) and things went very well with him, (Hands on hips and nodding.)” Genesis 39:2. (Open your palms in front of you like you’re opening a book.) (Practice verse a couple times using whisper voices, silly voices, loud voices, slow, fast, etc. Then have kids sit back down, get quiet, fold hands, and close eyes to pray.) PRAYER Dear God, thank you for being with Joseph even when his brothers were upset and hurt him. And thanks for being with us, always. Amen. SMALL GROUPS Ok kids are you ready? It’s small group time!
