FERNANDO EIMBCKEHe studied film direction at the Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematográficos of the UNAM (1992-1996). He started his career directing music videoclips and short films. His feature debut in Mexican cinema was Temporada de patos (Duck Season) in 2004, which won several awards including the Ariel Award (Mexican Oscar) for Best Film. His latest film, Lake Tahoe was received positively at Berlin International Film Festival, winning the FIPRESCI award and the Alfred Bauer Award, at Cartagena International Film Festival he received the India Catalina Award, winner of the Semilla Award for Best Feature Film at Cero Latitud in Ecuador. Winner for Best Direction at Guadalajara
International Film Festival.

This is the story of Elisa, whose father’s last wish is to be buried in Mexico. Elisa, an American citizen, doesn’t understand why her father wants to be buried in a country that forced him to emigrate in order to survive. Upon Elisa’s arrival to her father’s village she understands how little is left from the Mexican Revolution in which her grandfather fought, however she discovers the value of the homeland and why it is worth it to go back.

PATRICIA RIGGENShe was born in Guadalajara, México, and holds an MFA in Film Direction from Columbia University. Her first short film La Milpa, screened in more than 30 film festivals and won the Mexican Academy Award, the DGA East Coast Student Filmmaker Award and the Gold Medal from the Student Academy Awards. Her next short, Family Portrait, won the Jury Price in Short Filmmaking at Sundance in 2005 and was named Best Documentary Film at the Aspen Short Film Festival. In 2007 she released her first film La Misma Luna at Sundance Film Festival, which became a huge box office success in Mexico and USA.
LUCIOLucio spends the weekend with his grandmother and his cousins preparing his flag salute for school. The visit of his rebellious cousin Omar will make him reflect on the true meaning of patriotic actions and symbols.

GAEL GARCÍA BERNALAt age 19 he left Mexico’s television world to study acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Director Alejandro González Iñárritu tracked him down and offered him a part in Amores Perros. Subsequently, García Bernal starred in some of Mexico’s most celebrated recent films, including Y tu mamá también (2001) and El crimen del Padre Amaro (2002). In 2004 he starred as a young Che Guevara (Argentinian Marxist Revolutionary) in The Motorcycle Diaries. García Bernal also directed his first feature film, Déficit, which premiered at Semaine International de la Critique Cannes 2007. He participated as one of the directors in the project 8 along with Mira Nair, Gus Van Sant and Wim Wenders which premiered as an Opening Film at the Rome International Film Festival. He most recently starred in Rudo y Cursi (2008) with Diego Luna, directed by Carlos Cuarón.

AMAT ESCALANTEHe is a self-taught filmmaker from the city of Guanajuato, Mexico. He began to devote himself completely to cinema at the age of 15. After completing two short films, he wrote and directed his first feature, Sangre, a film shot in his native Gua-najuato that premiered in the Official Selection Un Certain Regard of the Cannes Film Festival in 2005, where it received the FIPRESCI Prize (award). His second film Los Bastardos premiered at the Official Selection Un Certain Regard Cannes in 2008. He also won the New Visions Award at the Catalonian International Film Festival, Feature Film Competition Award at the Morelia International Film Fes-tival, won the Best Ibero-American Film Award at Mar del Plata Film Festival, the Critics Award at Lima Latin American Film Festival, won the Student Jury Award and Best Director at Bratislava International Film Festival.

CARLOS REYGADASHe studied Law in Mexico, afterwards he specialized in Armed Conflicts in London and worked for the United Nations. In 1997 Reygadas participated in a film competition in Belgium with his first short film, Maxhumain. Shortly after that, in 1999, he began writing his first long film, Japón. The film was presented at the Rotterdam Film Festival and received a special mention for the Caméra d’Or award at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival as well as the Coral Award of the Havana Film Festival. He directed Batalla en el Cielo in 2005 which was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes and won the FIPRESCI Prize at Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival. In 2007 his film Stellet Licht competed once more for the Palme d’Or at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival winning the Jury Award, he also won the Grand Prize at Riga International Film Forum ‘Arsenals’, the Golden Colón at Huelva Latin

MARIANA CHENILLOShe graduated from the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC) of Mexico City in 1995, where she specialized in film directing. Since 2005 she has taught at CCC and has also served as a counselor in the area of direction and direction assistance. Cinco días sin Nora (2008) was her first feature film as director and writer, winner of the Audience Award at Morelia International Film Festival, Miami International Film Festival, Best Direction Award at Moscu International Film Festival, Best Script Award at the Skip City Festival in Japan, Best First Feature Award at Expresión en Corto Festival in Guanajuato, Selected as an Opening Film for Latin Beat Festival in New York, winner of “El Abrazo” award for the best feature film in Biarritz, France and winner of the Best Feature Film and Best Direction at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival.

GERARDO NARANJOHe began working on film criticism and in 1997 directed his first short Perro Negro. From there Gerardo went on to pursue a Masters in Directing at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. His Masters thesis The Last Attack of the Beast won several awards and much critical acclaim and acted as a springboard for his debut feature film Malachance (2004). The next year he co-wrote and starred in Azazel Jacobs’ The Good Times Kid (2005). His sophomore effort, Drama/Mex, premiered at Cannes in May 2006 for the “Semaine de la Critique” before going on to screen at fifty more festivals around the world. Gerardo’s new film I’m Gonna Explode premiered at the 65th Venice Biennale in 2008 and was officially selected for the 46th New York Film Festival, Toronto Film Festival, Berlinale (Generation Program) and won the FIPRESCI award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival.

RODRIGO PLÁFilm director and screenwriter, he studied at the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica in Mexico. He won a student Oscar for his short film Eyes in the Back of One’s Head. His feature debut, the thriller The Zone, won Best Debut at the Venice festival and was awarded by the FIPRESCI jury in Toronto that same year. The second feature film by this Mexican director, the drama The Desert Within, was selected as the closing film of Critics’ Week at the Cannes IFF 2008, it received eight Ariel Awards from the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences, also won Best Film Award at Mar del Plata Film Festival, Audience Award, Mezcal Award and Mayahuel Award at Guadalajara Mexican Film Festival and the Special Jury Award at
Amiens International Film Festival.

DIEGO LUNADiego Luna was introduced to worldwide audiences with his starring role in the award-winning Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001), alongside life-long friend Gael Garcia Bernal for director Alfonso Cuarón. Luna’s addition-al feature films include Harmony Korine’s Mister Lonely, Before Night Falls for director Julian Schnabel, Criminal for Stephen Soderbergh and George Clooney’s Section Eight Productions, The Terminal for director Steven Spielberg, Frida opposite Salma Hayek for director Julie Taymor. Luna most recently reunited as an actor with Gael Garcia Bernal in Carlos Cuaron’s Rudo y Cursi. Last year, he starred in award-winning Milk op-posite Sean Penn for director Gus Van Saint. He goes behind the camera as a director for a second time with Abel this year, his fictional directorial debut. Previously, he directed the documentary Chavez that premiered at 2007 Tribeca Film Festival.
