2 Spring 2012

Dear Bishop Gorman Alumni,

Moving full speed into 2012, it’s hard to believe that spring has already arrived. As we finish up the last events of the 2011-2012 school year - spring musical, Knight of the Gael, Easter, prom, Third Thursday, Service Day, and graduation, just to name a few… it seems that there is never a dull moment at Bishop Gorman High School. Yet isn’t that what makes this place so special? That our students, teachers, parents, and alumni continue to take part in creating and recreating what it means to be a member of the Bishop Gorman community.

Even as we expand our campus and student body, improving the facilities and opportunities for those who attend, Bishop Gorman will always remain “home” for our students, alumni, and friends. I encourage you to look through this Gazette and remember the traditions you shared as a high school student.

I hope you’ll find fond memories and a sense of pride in being a Gael – I’m sure you’ll see that whether it was 1954 or 2012, Bishop Gorman is a place where students grow in their faith, excel in their academic endeavors and create lasting friendships, old and new.

All the Best, Carli Portz ‘06 Alumni & Parent Relations Coordinator

Alumni and Friends,

As you know, we are blessed to have a rich tradition of excellence at Bishop Gorman High School. The dedication and talent of our student body is truly amazing. I can’t tell you how proud I am to be associated with a school that excels in so many different areas. Our success would not be possible without the support of our community. Thank you for following our activities and teams and being loyal fans of the Gaels.

We hope that you continue to help tell our story and share your positive experiences about Bishop Gorman High School with others. In doing so, please remember that we do not recruit individual students for specific programs and it is never acceptable to offer any type of incentives or benefits to prospective student-athletes. When a parent or student expresses to you an interest in attending Bishop Gorman, please direct them to Ann Wozniak, the Director of Admissions (476-4008).

As Bishop Gorman High School continues to grow and prosper we look forward to all the exciting things the future holds. Thank you for being a part of our team.

Go Gaels, Sally Nieman Athletic Director

On January 17th the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto opened to the Bishop Gorman community during a dedication ceremony to honor the legacy of Frank J. Fertitta, Jr. Bishop Joseph A. Pepe presided over the ceremony, blessing the Grotto and recalling a few of his many memories with Mr. Fertitta. The gorgeous structure includes a small inlet that features a hand-carved marble statue of the Virgin Mary. The Grotto provides a peaceful space for meditation and reflection, enhancing the spiritual lives of our students on campus.

honoringThe Engelstad Family Foundation

KnIgHt oF tHe gaeLOn Thursday, March 22nd nearly 600 parents, alumni and friends gathered to honor a very special family of the Bishop Gorman community, Betty and Ralph Engelstad and their daughter Kris (Engelstad) McGarry '76.

The generosity and commitment the Engelstad Family Foundation has shown to Bishop Gorman has resulted in our ability to offer a Catholic education to a more diverse population; provide state of the art facilities for students to gather, worship and learn as a faith-filled community; and afford countless opportunities to thousands of students. This year’s Knight of the Gael was about honoring a family that has changed the future for so many students and made Bishop Gorman High School a special place for all.

We could not have had such a wonderful evening without the help of our partners, Red Rock Resort Casino and Spa, Station Casinos, Wirtz Beverage of Nevada, Destination by Design, Bernhard & Williams Photography and Five Star Creative.

New to the event this year was our silent auction. Many thanks to our auction donors Jodie & Stu Berger, Denise (Koval) '78 & Tim Cashman '78, Lorenzo J. Fertitta '87, DeMarco Murray '06, Michael Gaughan '61, Michael Mack, Milo Kostelky '94, Piero’s, Fr. Joe O’Brien and the Mandarin Oriental.

We had many volunteers and student performers who helped to make the evening truly memorable. Thank you to Mrs. Elena Ferrante-Martin and the cast of Viva Las Vegas; Mrs. Chrissie Ramos and the Flash Mob; Mr. Steve Purifoy and the drum line; Ms. Sandy (Sagel) Young '75 and the senior varsity cheerleaders and especially, Joe Manfredi '12 and Nathan Hill '15.

Cheer! Cheer! For Old Gorman High!

Last year we began to discuss the hope for expansion on the Bishop Gorman campus. Since then, we have acquired 16 acres of land adjacent to the existing campus.

November 2011 began construction on land just south of the football stadium for the Fertitta Athletic Training Center. Construction is on schedule and the facility will be completed by June.

The first floor (image A) of this new facility will provide strength conditioning for our students-athletes, a fitness center for all our students and faculty, trainer’s room, lecture hall, nutrition bar, offices and locker rooms. The second floor (image B) will be a fully-equipped reception center for the Bishop Gorman community to gather for meetings and banquets.

Additionally, as a result of some very generous initial commitments to our capital campaign we are now in a position to start construction of the expansion to the north of the campus in May, with completion by August of next year (image C). This phase will include expansion of the Commons to accommodate 750 students, two additional lecture halls, an education building with 10 classrooms, two science labs and two computer labs which will enable us to increase enrollment to 1,500 students, a lighted practice field for football, soccer and lacrosse, additional student parking and a landscaped park-like quadrangle (image D) where our students can gather to express and exchange ideas.

In the near future you will be hearing from us as to how you can help to ensure the successful completion of this project. We are confident that with your generosity and the leadership of our chairperson, Mr. Anthony Marnell '92, we will reach our goal.

We are so blessed to have a community that is committed to Bishop Gorman. You can be very proud of what you have accomplished as alumni, parents, and members of this Bishop Gorman family.
