The Whisperings2105 S. McDowell Ext. Petaluma, Ca 94954 (707) 763-0901 June 2014 Issue 6, Volume 110
Hello Fellow Elks. There have been a lot of hap-
penings since my last news-letter. First of all the Ritual competition is over and done. You can be very proud of the Petaluma 901 team. They brought home 2 first Place, 1 Second Place, and 2 Third Place trophies. Plus we also brought home the Second Place trophy for the District. San Rafael’s team won First Place and represented the
“Great” Northwest District at the State competition. They did very well and came in Fourth in their division. Well done San Rafael you did the District proud.
If you missed the Mother’s Day Breakfast, you missed a very wonder-ful event. Ted O’Shea and his crew did a fabulous job. Irma Wilson out did herself this year with three gift baskets. A Giants / 49er theme basket, a pamper yourself basket, and a garden basket. (Who by the way our own Myrna Bellovich, wife of our Lead-ing Knight, won) We also had a beautiful BBQ with supplies donated by Duane Miles and Dennis Hogan-son. Congratulations to all the winners; enjoy your prizes.
Wayne Wilson, Jim Cavellini, Bobbi Galbraith, and I attended the 99th
California-Hawaii State Convention, in Palm Springs. Beautiful place but I think we were all glad to be home. We picked the HOTTEST week to be there, just a balmy 107, whew!!!! We all attended several seminars and picked up a lot of very good informa-tion and some new con-tacts. We also attended the Installation of Pete Day, the new State Vice-President for the Great Northwest District. Pete is from the Eureka Lodge.
There are a couple of upcoming events that you might be interested in. The first one will be the visi-tation of the State VP on June 28th. We are looking forward to welcoming him and his family to our lodge. Hope to see everyone in attendance to give Pete and family one of our famous Petaluma welcomes.
The second event is
Rich Simmons putting on an impressive GNWD Flag Day Ceremony at the Napa Lodge on June 12th. If you have never been to one of these flag ceremonies you have missed a very special event. To see the veterans from the Yountville Vet-erans Home is very heart rendering. Plus Rich could use some help assisting the veterans that will be in at-tendance.
Then on July 5th Carl Bellovich, Lecturing Knight, will be hosting our annual 4th of July Family Picnic. In the morning, Esquire, Casey Sullivan, will be holding our own beautiful flag ceremony with the Boy Scouts & Lodge Officers. Please come and join us for a day of fun and to cel-ebrate out Nations birth. And to acknowledge all the men and women that have given their lives to keep us free.w

TOTALLY FUN!!
Flag Day, June 14th, commemorates the birth of Old Glory, the adop-tion of the flag of the United States by resolution of the Second Conti-
nental Congress in 1777.The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of
America has celebrated the holiday since the early days of the organiza-tion. Patriotism has characterized the BPOE and allegiance to the flag of our country is a requirement of every member.
In 1907, the Grand Lodge designated by resolution June 14th as Flag Day. The Grand Lodge of the Order adopted mandatory observance of the occasion by every Lodge in 1911, which continues today. The Elks Flag Day Service is very special as it not only covers the history of our flag, but many of the flags of the earlier colonies are displayed for the audience.
The Elks prompted President Woodrow Wilson to recognize the Order’s observance of Flag Day for its patriotic expression. In May 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14th as Flag Day.
On August 3rd, 1949, President Harry Truman, himself a member of the Elks, made the proclamation that thereafter June 14th would be a day of national observance for the symbol of our country and National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.

The California Hawaii Elks Association (CHEA) convention was held in Palm Springs May 14th to May 17th. Over 1200 representa-tives from throughout the state attended this informa-tive, enlightening, & enter-taining event. In attendance from our lodge were Lodge officers ER Marilyn Bar-tow, Leading Knight Wayne Wilson, Secretary Bobbi Galbraith, & myself. Also attending were Lodge 1st Dude, photographer, & chauffeur Fred Bartow, Irma Wilson, my wife Mary, DD Tim Jaeger & wife Sandy, & PDDGER Rich Simmons & wife Carolyn.
The convention is an oc-casion to not only meet our counterparts from around the state & learn how they conduct business, but it also affords an opportunity to find new ways to provide for our members & our community through the discussions at the business sessions & the workshops presented each day. Some of the subjects presented at the workshops were:
-being certain our lodge carries enough insurance to cover loss of business because of a prolonged clo-sure due to some catastro-phe such as a fire, broken plumbing, etc.
-other insurance mat-ters regarding employee liability & other liability issues,
-the pros & cons of us-ing independent contractors as opposed to employees to provide member services,
-maintaining detailed records regarding employee supervision, time rolls, & the confidentiality of em-ployee records,
-recruitment & reten-tion of members including methods of attracting new members & ways of publi-cizing our programs & inter-action with our community.
All of these subjects were of great interest & educa-tional value. I know I came home with many new ideas about recruitment of new members & how to more ef-fectively manage our lodge.
From my perspective the highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the California Hawaii Elks Ma-jor Projects, Inc. (CHEMPI) 2014 Theme Child. Ethan Kempton is a seven year old child who was born with ex-treme disabilities because of oxygen deprivation caused by the umbilical cord wrap-ping around his neck while in the womb. Ethan was unable to do the things we take for granted such as picking up a pencil, learn-ing to speak, & many other relatively simple tasks. Three years ago CHEMPI began providing the special assistance of occupational & speech therapy Ethan re-quired, but was beyond his family’s means. Ethan still has many goals to accom-plish, but his improvement is unbelievable. Ethan gave a short speech of thanks & he, his two brothers, & their mother performed a dance routine that was truly inspi-rational. Of importance to
901 TRUSTEE’S & HOUSE COMMITTEEELKS 99th STATE CONVENTION
-By Jim Cavellini, Chairmanme beyond the miraculous improvement was the fact that Ethan brought to mind that the Elks Club is much more than a social club, we are in fact an organization that provides outstanding service to the neediest of our community.
The final bit of business was also very interest-ing... the ER’s Piggy Bank March. Each lodge, from throughout the state, an-nounces the amount they have raised for the Purple Pig program. This year our lodge donated over $25,000 to help CHEA raise a total of $3,234,413.53. Amazing & unbelievable. Many unfor-tunate families are going to benefit because of the unselfishness of the Elks of California & Hawaii. While the cost of sending our delegation has its impact on our budget, the knowledge we gain, the contacts we make, & the understanding of what the Elks do for our communities is priceless.
All members are welcome to the T /HC meetings. But to be placed on the agenda of a T/HC meeting please send your request into the lodge office no later than the Wednesday before the meet-ing. Members wishing to speak at the T/HC meetings but not on the agenda will be heard on a time available basis. Remember all mem-bers are invited to the T/HC meetings & we need to hear from all of our brothers & sisters.
We have an opening on the Board of Trustees. If inter-ested in the position of the3 Year Trustee contact the office ASAP at 707-763-0901 #0.
