collection begins with Catherine II soon after assuming the throne. She started collecting works of Art. She made her first acquisition in 1764- 225 Dutch and Flemish paintings were bought from the Berlin merchant Gotzkowsky.

As for me I can’t help admiring Rembrandt’s painting “The return of the Prodigal son” I could just look at it for ages, because there is so much to see, so many emotions such intensity in the moment when the father welcomes the son back from his wanderings.

Standing in front of the picture I always feel the witness of this human tragedy: the meeting of an old man for whom the death is probably near and his son who has lost faith in his happiness and the future .

Here Rembrandt is proclaiming the humanist idea of people closeness, their readiness to help one another at the most difficult times and the dignity of a man. This picture arouses strong feelings and emotions. It’s worth seeing.
