Coming of age is what they used to call a 21st birthday. And that’s exactly what has happened to Manchester’s food and drink scene in these past two decades. We like to think MFDF has been a catalyst for our city’s explosion of culinary talent. Certainly with each passing year we have reflected and celebrated it through the prestigious Manchester Food and Drink Festival Awards handed out at our Gala Dinner – this year to be held for the first time in the spectacular Gorton Monastery.

Spectacular just about sums up the past year packed with exciting new projects and even more in the pipeline. The best year yet? We’d like to think so. Just look at the shortlists across the Awards’ 18 categories. Barely one nominee was around 20 years ago, few even five years ago.

Fine dining is represented but also street food, craft beer, cocktail bars, coffee shops, the burgeoning vegan scene, all contenders for best in the UK. The buzz is reflected across eleven action-packed days of citywide events. This year, the focus of our benchmark events is the Albert Square Hub, given a major transformation

with the addition of the Dining Dome – an impressive spherical foodie palace that will be home to so many stand-out events.

As always the UK’s largest urban food festival is all about enjoying yourself. Grab a cold beer or a welcome G&T, take in a live music gig and dine inside the pleasure dome.

We’ve filled this brochure with the meatiest bits of the Festival menu, but be sure to check out our wonderful website www.foodanddrinkfestival.com for more events and announcements.

The beating heart of the Festival is transformed this year with the addition of the Dining Dome – a fabulous spherical foodie palace that’s the location for a host of specially curated banquets, supper clubs and events. We love it so much we are concentrating most of our signature events there for our biggest programme yet.

And that’s not the only difference for Albert Square. A complete redesign allows for more foodie partners to find a home there this autumn.

Dozens of the best street food heroes will serve up gorgeous local cuisine alongside some of the most exciting restaurant brands in the city. Plus there’ll be a newly designed Festival Bar space featuring some of Manchester’s breweries; a host of new drinking

activations – from beer buses to gin containers; a better-than-ever music line up; and a non-stop calendar of the most exciting food experiences yet.

Created by Dutch twin sisters Joyce and Raissa de Haas, Double Dutch’s drinks range is developed using flavour pairing techniques to create uniquely-balanced tipples. They employ only natural ingredients blended with the highest quality water from the North of England to produce crisp and fresh mixers. This award-winning new-kid-on-the-block is bringing its colourful container bar to the Festival.

Swing by to grab a gin of your choice with gorgeous Double Dutch mixers, including the well-balanced Pomegranate & Basil and a fresh summer-infused Cucumber & Watermelon. Plus, the bar will also be serving more classic variations as well as hearty ‘Dark and Stormys’ for the rum fans.

Manchester Brew FestCelebrating the region’s beer boom – not just the high profile city centre players – the Hub offers a range of ales from the furthest flung corners of Greater Manchester and beyond. Check out Brightside Brewery from Radcliffe, Hophurst (Wigan), Irwell Works (Ramsbottom) and Seven Bro7hers (Salford) alongside Red Willow from Macclesfield, Beartown (Congleton) and Three Bs (Blackburn). Not forgetting those stalwarts of the city’s Piccadilly Beer Mile, Manchester Brewing Company. And that’s just the start.

MFDF Cider FestThe Festival’s own little cider haven, the MFDF Cider Bar will be pitching up again to bring refreshing ciders to the proceedings. From Weston’s to Addlestone’s and Sheppy’s to Bad Apple, this is a real mini fest-within-a-fest for cider enthusiasts.

There’ll also be a range of delicious flavoured ciders including lemon and lime, mango and apple, and pear.

The Brooklyn Brewery BusBrooklyn Brewery, the cult New York brewers, will be bringing a new American school bus to the Hub serving up a range of brews from their Perennials and Seasonal ranges. Favourites like Brooklyn East IPA, Brooklyn Lager and Scorcher will be on tap alongside their full range of seasonal beers, including Post Road Pumpkin Ale – the perfect seasonal accompaniment to MFDF’s autumn celebration.

There’s always Voom for improvement! Vin Van Voom’s 50s style silver van has long been a Festival Hub magnet for wine lovers. Now there’s a new look for the whole enterprise, featuring a reclaimed bar and new under cover seating.

Expect a few surprises among the wines on offer too. There was a good reason VVV owner Kate Goodman was a much-loved wine guru on BBC2’s Food and Drink programme. The bottles she sources for her day job, Reserve Wines in West Didsbury, are second to none. Look out for a fantastic, changing selection of boutique wines from Catteratto to Chablis, Malbec to Montepulciano.

1.00pm Joudie Kalla – chef/authorLeith’s School of Food and Wine trained Joudie Kalla has been a chef for over 16 years – at restaurants such as Gordon Ramsay’s Pengelley’s, Daphne’s and Papillon, and latterly as an acclaimed supper club host. Joudie’s food is inspired by her Palestinian family heritage – vibrant, healthy dishes that are easy to make. Her first book, Palestine on a Plate, was an instant best seller and critical hit, praised by Nigella Lawson. She will be signing copies of her new book, Baladi, which roughly translates from Arabic as ‘My Country’. The book takes the reader on a journey through Palestinian food and culture. Its imagery has been captured by Palestinian locals – giving the book the feel of a community project. The recipes are veggie and vegan friendly but cater to every palate – influenced by the diversity of food from the fields, markets, orchards and sea.

2.15pm Simon Wood – Masterchef winner/restaurateurOver the past year, WOOD Manchester, the eponymous First Street restaurant of 2015 Masterchef winner Simon, has made quite a stir, culminating in it making the shortlist for Best Newcomer in the

2018 Manchester Food and Drink Festival Awards. The Chadderton-born former data manager fulfilled a childhood dream when he won the fearsomely competitive telly cook-off. His areas of passion include fine dining, the art of plating, and teaching – encapsulated in his debut cookbook At Home with Simon Wood – Fine Dining Made Simple. The food at WOOD, from elaborate tasting menus to tomahawk steak evenings, takes all this to a different level.

3.30pm Jack Monroe – blogger/campaignerJack Monroe was awarded the 2013 Fortnum and Mason Judges’ Choice Award for the impact her blog, A Girl Called Jack, has had. She is now a well-known campaigner against hunger and poverty in the UK, regular recipe contributor to The Guardian and winner of a Women of the Year award in 2014. She is author of bestselling cookbooks A Girl Called Jack and A Year in 120 Recipes and her budget-conscious, vegan-led recipes are instantly available on her website cookingonabootsrap.com.

All three chefs will be signing copies of their new books after their respective demos.

A treat for all wine lovers. Fiona Beckett is an award-winning food and drink journalist, author and web publisher with over 25 years’ experience of writing for the UK’s top newspapers and magazines. She is currently wine columnist for The Guardian and National Geographic Traveller Food magazine and restaurant critic for Decanter, while publishing her own website www.matchingfoodandwine.com, which helps you find the perfect pairing for your favourite dishes.

Cult beers, fabulous street food providers and comedy – sounds like the perfect recipe for a great night in most people’s books. Add to this an ethical slant and you’ve got yourself an evening of food, fun and debate, too. New York’s Brooklyn Brewery has led the field in highlighting how the food and drink industry can decrease its environmental impact.

On the night the likes of Bundobust and Wholesome Junkies will be among those providing delicious, ethically sourced vegan produce, matched by a range of Brooklyn beers, while comedian/electronic musician Fat Roland will be entertaining the crowd. All proceeds will go to Festival charity Action Against Hunger. All tickets include a 3 course dinner, and a range of Brooklyn Beers.

The country’s most famous restaurant critic, Jay Rayner, rather liked Albert’s Schloss when he visited earlier this year for his Observer restaurant column. So much so that the big bad wolf of the dining world has agreed to bring his Jazz Quartet to the venue for a night of music, storytelling, food and drink.

As well as being an award-winning writer, journalist and broadcaster, Jay is now a successful recording artist and performer. Made up of some of Britain’s best musicians, including Jay’s wife who is an accomplished jazz singer, the quartet will be performing a repertoire from the great American songbook with special attention paid to numbers about food and drink. Plus a special Jay Rayner menu will be served throughout.

Foodies are challenged to try out as many Manchester restaurants as they can during the Festival as dozens of the finest establishments in the city offer up a signature small plate along with a beer, wine or spirit for just £5. All you need to do is reference ‘MFDF Small Plate Safari’ when ordering.

Participating restaurants include Automatic Cafe, Harvey Nichols, HOME, Iberica, Tapeo & Wine, The Clarence, The Grill On The Alley, Opium Lounge, All Star Lanes, Platzki, Banyan, Cosy Club, Pho, Alston Bar & Beef, Almost Famous, Home Sweet Home, Luck Lust Liquor & Burn, Lunya, Asha’s, Grafene, Proove and Beastro.
