"Why are there so many misconceptions about the Immaculate Concep-tion?

Tuesday, December 8th is the Solemn Feast of the Immaculate Concep-tion, which Catholics everywhere observe as a holy day of obligation. This feast marks the conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary through her parents, Ann and Joachim, by natural means. What is "immaculate" is that God preserved her from Original Sin and all of its effects from the first moment of her conception.

This freedom from sin is important for two reasons: it was fitting that our Lord Jesus Christ should have an Immaculate Mother to bear him and because her freedom from sin allowed her to give a full "yes" to God's plan throughout her life.

It is fitting that our Lady be a Glorious Mother to the only Begotten Son. In the Old Testament the signs of the Old Cove-nant was an amazing ark, covered in gold and carefully arranged by Moses (Exodus 25:10-22). This earthly splendor of golden design honored the Old Covenant, which could only make humanity aware of their sins. How fitting is it that the Blessed Virgin Mary, who carried Jesus, our New and Eternal Covenant, be adorned- not with gold- but with virtue, purity, sanctity, faith, hope, and love? How fitting is it that the Covenant that Saves be even more splendorous?

The Father's gift of the Immaculate Conception to Our Lady was not just freedom from sin as a legal distinction. The Im-maculate Conception was freedom from sin AND the presence of virtue, interior strength and purity, all things necessary to serve God with an undivided heart.

There are many misconceptions about the Immaculate Conception, but make no mistake, it is a singular gift from God to Mary, our Mother, from which we benefit. Let us give thanks to God for such a great gift!"

Advent Candles The parish office has Advent candles and rings available for purchase. The set of 4 candles is $4, the ring is $6, or both as a set for $10. Please stop in the parish office if you would like to purchase these items. Happy Advent!!!

PASTORAL & HOMEBOUND CORNER

With great joy, we celebrate the Solemnity of Immaculate Conception Tuesday this week. Saint Luke records Mary’s words to the angel Gabriel, ‘Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” I met a few parishioners who are witnessing Mary's FIAT every day in their homes or nursing homes. Moreover, the bishops of the United States proclaimed Mary, under the title of her Immaculate Conception, the principal patroness of the country in 1846. Let us continue to ask Our Lady to be our special protectress and intercessor, and let us show our love to her in ingenious ways. Happy Feast Day! Chiara

SACRED HEART CEMETERY CORNER

With Advent upon us, thoughts turn to Christmas decorations. Please remember two things when placing wreaths and such on your loved ones gravesites, first this is SD, and we have wind in December, secondly, our cemetery is home to a growing family of deer, so please secure any decorations and do not be surprised if fresh flowers and those that look real are tasted by the wildlife. Please continue to pray for Sacred Heart Ceme-tery, and all of the deceased of our Parish. Thanks, Jeff Swank
