A Bit of Historyby Myron A Tisdel, PM #254

Reading Lodge #254 in Redding and Trinity Lodge #27 in Weaverville have each formed a committee to explore the feasibility of consolidation. It is most ap-propriate then to learn more about each lodge and how they are similar yet unique. I bring forth the fol-lowing for just such purpose as an example of one stone being added to others in the erection of this newly formed structure. As I write this article the Carr fire which has ravaged the western part of Shasta County and some of the eastern part of Trinity County is still not contained. Now we also have the Hirz Fire by Lake Shasta and the Hat Fire by the Fall River area of eastern Shasta County. Our deepest sympathy goes to those who have lost loved ones to the Carr Fire and our hearts go out to those who have lost their homes to fire. We extend our thanks to all those who have and are risking their lives working on these fires and those working to make things normal again. Northern Lights chapter will resume its meetings on Fri-day, September 7th. This will be our Friendship Night and our theme is “Northern Lights Cookout”. Dinner will be served at 6pm. PLEASE RSVP by September 4th to Marian @ 241-7065 or John @ 778-3603. We will also be honoring our 25 and 50 year members and will be presenting 25 year pins to Sisters Judy Phelps, Carla Zoelmer, and Kathy Grayson. 50 year pins will be given to Brother Cecil Stinson and Ernest Bock and to Sister Marie Rob-erts. Sister Barbara Blake and Brother Robert Metcalf cannot be with us so their pins were sent to them. Congratulations Sis-ter Barbara and Brother Robert on your 50 years of member-ship in the order of Eastern Star. It is almost time to learn who our new Deputy Grand Ma-tron will be. On Saturday October 13th the Associate Matrons and Patrons of District 4 will be hosting our annual luncheon honoring our outgoing and incoming deputy grand matrons. The luncheon will be held at the Country Waffles in Redding and will begin at 11:30. Please see the invitation in this Trestleboard for more information including who to RSVP to. There will also be an association meeting at the luncheon with an election of officers for the coming year. As a reminder to our members we are still collecting canned food items for the food pantries. Happy Birthday to all our July, August and September ba-bies and a Happy Anniversary to those who married in July, Au-gust or September.

Sisters & Brothers: Hope everyone had a great summer. Now it is back to business as usual! Thanks everyone for volunteering at the 4th of July BBQ (especially OES), the guard duty for St. Germainne, the Sheriff Association Convention, and the 30th Annual Mt. Shasta Car Show-n-Shine. Degree work has continued thru out the summer and your help with that is greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Brother Dick Hughes, PM and his valuable as-sistance as well as the Brothers from Howard Lodge #37 and their support. Brother Hamedo has volunteered to as-sist Glen Kaufman after he receives his entered apprentice degree. Date is forthcoming. Looking forward to seeing Brother Veltri back in Lodge after his knee surgery. Hope all goes well! This years’ Christmas Party will be Saturday, December 15th. Please mark your calendars. Don’t be late as the “Bell Ringers” start at 5 p.m. We are contemplating restarting the 1st Sunday Break-fast. Would you be willing to help? Please contact me with your ideas. Fort Crook #250Fall River Mills, California

Greetings from Fort Crook, like most of the North State we are trying to survive the

summer unscathed. At the time I am writing this, we are celebrating the defeat of the Hat Fire that threat-ened the Fall River Mills area and caused the post-ponement of our August stated meeting, as well as the cancellation of our annual picnic at the Intermountain Fairgrounds. The whole Fall River valley last power for several days, but things are starting to come back on line. All that, of course pales in comparison to what our Brothers in Redding had to endure with the Carr Fire. Our thoughts and prayers were with you as that fire blew up and threatened both Western Star #2 and Reading Lodge #254. I was very relieved to hear that both buildings survived, but saddened, however to hear that some Brothers lost their homes in the fire. On a better note, we are happy to say that we have elected a new candidate to receive his degrees at Fort Crook Lodge and we are scheduling practices to prepare for his First Degree ceremony. We are also putting together our Bags for Kids project in preparation for the upcoming school year. We deliver new backpacks stuffed with school sup-plies to second graders at four elementary schools from Montgomery Creek, Burney, Fall River Mills, and Big Valley. As we all look forward to the cooler days of fall, Fort Crook #250 sends its best wishes and prayers to all those Brothers, families, and friends who were impacted by the recent fires. And of course, if there is anything we can do to help in your recovery, don’t hesitate to let us know.

Fraternally, Mark L. Stalcup, Master

Brethren, Dates of notable interest for the month

of August. Birthdays: Bill Fischer, 8/20, Bob Gale, 8/03, Sid Griffin, 8/08, Alex Hodges, 8/22, Terry Lee, 8/06, Gary Ramsden, 8/15, and Harold Underwood, PM, /27. Third degree anniversaries: Jamie Baudizzon, PM, 8/12, Jay Bevard, PM, 8/19, Tony Delmonico, 8/31, Phil Jones, 8/18, and Robert Whitmarsh, 8/12. A moment of silence was held for two of our de-parted Brothers. Brother George Durkee joined that celestial lodge above on June 17, 2018 while living in Acacia Creek in Union City. Brother Robert Bateman joined that celestial lodge above on June 26, 2016 while living in Weaverville. A resolution was presented by the Chairman of the Consolidation Committee that consolidation with Reading Lodge #254 is prudent and desirable; there-fore, the Worshipful Master was authorized to appoint a committee composed of members of Trinity Lodge #27 to arrange the terms of consolidation. The resolu-tion was passed by a majority vote of the members present. The Worshipful Master then appointed five members of our Lodge to sit on the committee. Dates of notable interest for the month of Sep-tember. Birthdays: Roger Moulton, 9/05. Third Degree Anniversaries: Chris Erikson, PM, 9/02 (41 yrs), Jon Wideman, PM (25) 9/10, John Hodges, 9/20 (33). The August Stated Meeting was poorly attended. Most discussion was concerning the consolidation process. A meeting was held with Reading #254 con-solidation committee on the evening of August 16, 2018 via a teleconference. More next month.

Trinity Star #650Order of the Eastern Star

Weaverville, California

Western Star #2Shasta, California

Welcome back to all those Chapters who have been on Summer vacations. We are now in the last leg of our Grand Year. Most of you know that Trinity Star in Weaverville meets during the sum-mer, and we are happy for the visits of those who traveled up the mountain during the past couple of months. Looks like Mother Nature has again made life a little dif-ficult for those of us in the Northern part of California. I am writing this on August 14th, and the story is that Highway 299 is still closed most of the day but open during the night. It’s a good thing we have a good grocery store and other shops in town. Three hours to Redding (each way) is a little much. Unless you can go down between 12:00 noon and 1:30 pm and return after 6:00 pm at night. But as always this too shall pass and the new normal will return. We keep all those who lost anything during the Carr Fire in our thoughts! In fact, we have our Friendship meeting coming up in September. And we invite any of you who are willing to take the challenge of the mountain to come share the meeting with us:Theme: Flowers of FriendshipDay/Time: Thursday, September 20 , meeting at 7:00 pm.Dinner: A pot luck dinner served at 6:00 pm.Events: We will be presenting a 50 Year in to our friend Judy Pflueger. Judy was previously a member of Eastern Star in the Northern District. But now living in Trinity Center, she and Hal are members here. Hal will be presenting her pin. Also, in September we will be serving dinner to the members of Trinity Lodge in Weaverville. Our very Own cook extraordinaire, Deanna Bradford, will be the chief cook. And others will be the servers and bottle washers. That will be at the Stated Meeting on September 10th. Check with the Master of the Lodge if you plan to attend so the tuna fish sandwiches will go around. Oops. That is not on the menu. At this point it is still being planned, but whatever it is…..Deanna is the best. Looking ahead, October 4th will be our Election Night.

Who will share in Brenda’s first year at the helm? The theme will be based around Halloween. We might even have a few spiders who missed the broom on our last clean up. Colors will be Fall Colors. If any of you are Mini-golf aficionados and enjoy a lei-surely trip to the Coast---The Order of the Amaranth of Eu-reka will be sponsoring Miniature Golf Tournament on Sep-tember 22, 2018. Hours 10AM to 2PM. It will be held in Sa-moa and the cost $10 for pre-registration, $15 for Registra-tion at the gate. All proceeds will benefit Diabetes Research. More details available from [email protected]. We hope to see you all during the last three months of the year at one of our events or yours. Wherever you are, whatever you do stay safe and healthy.

Greetings My Brothers Wow what a summer it has been! Some good times and some not so good, the fire is on everyone mind at this time and I’m the bearer of sad news that two of our broth-ers have lost their homes to the firestorm. Wor. Chris Word-low and Brother Dave Eppley both lost all to the fire, and Wor. John Murray was called home by the. Supreme Archi-tect of the Universe. But looking forward to better times our historic building came through in good shape, and many thanks to Wor. Uriah and Brother Matt Larsen who rushed out to the lodge to grab as many artifacts as they could. While our lodge is being cleaned and brought back up to par, Wor. Uriah has offered us the use of the Reading # 254’s temple. I am looking forward to a much happier re-port in next month’s Trestleboard.

Greetings Nobles, It is our most sincere hope that all of our Nobles and Brothers in the North State have escaped the devastating fires that have ravaged our area this summer. If any of you or your loved ones were impacted by the devastation, you have our deepest condolences. I am sure that this summer is one that everyone can’t wait to see the books closed on! It was sure heartening to see the picture that was passed on of “The Oldest Lodge in California” still standing tall and proud! Our regularly scheduled meeting for August 14th was moved to August 21st due to the power outage caused by the Hat Fire just west of Fall River Mills. We will have infor-mation from that meeting in the next issue. We would like to report that Noble Brian “buz” Hembling is feeling much better after having his hip replaced. A speedy recovery to you “buz”! Potentate David Barnekoff will be visiting our club on Sunday September 2nd for the 100th Anniversary of the In-termountain Fair in McArthur to march in the parade. We anticipate having between 25 – 30 Shriners from all over Northern California and Southern Oregon in the parade. In light of that, we will be having a reception for the Po-tentate and his Divan, all visiting out of town Shriners and their wives as well as our own club members and wives on Saturday September 1st. We are looking forward to seeing everyone. The reception and BBQ will be at the Fort Crook F&AM Hall in Fall River Mills starting @ 4:30 PM. At the re-ception we will be presenting Potentate David with checks totaling approximately $3000 for the Shrine Hospital, Hos-pital Transportation Fund, the Potentate’s Project and his Lady’s Project. All of this money was raised thru generous community donations and our Famous Gin Fizz Breakfasts that we held in the spring. Thanks to everyone for helping to make this possible. Let’s all continue to do our part make 2018 a banner year as we . . . .

Welcome Redding #17Order of the Eastern Star

Redding, California

What can we say?....This past month has been cruel, stressful, and yet, productive!

The Carr Fire tore up our community, took lives, homes, jobs and peace from all of us, in one way or another. But the peo-ple of this beautiful area came together – in a million differ-ent ways – and will rebuild, repopulate and regrow the entire area. The generosity and compassion still being shown ev-erywhere you look- is AWESOME! God Bless! Special prayers and good karma wishes for our members, Debbie Hartig and Dave Eppley on the loss of their home in Shasta. Worthy Ma-tron’s daughter, Hillary lost her home, also. So life goes on …and Welcome-Redding Chapter will start back into session on September 11th. The Worthy Pa-tron just told me that “Celebrity Chefs” will be there on that Tuesday night and start serving at 6:00 p.m.! RESERVA-TIONS ARE A MUST! Please let him know 275-5934. This fine meal will be a Post-Labor Day feast, and as this is our an-nual Brothers’ Night event, we look forward to having some brothers from the other chapters in the area – Northern Lights, Trinity Star and/or Fidelity??? A note from the Secretary Desk: All Officers – please bring your books to the September meeting so Sister Caro-lyn can update with all the changes in Ritual, Instruction and Constitution/By-laws’ books. If you are excited or even interested in becoming an elected officer for our fun-filled Chapter, you must present a ‘declaration of intent to run’ on the dais at the October meeting, so think about it and help out the success of our Order, by participating in any way you feel able….there is al-ways help with any thing you might want. By the way, October 9th will be our Friendship Night and the secretary will have a list of all corresponding officers and their addresses to send invitations out in a timely manner. This always makes for a laugh-filled meeting – to share the good times, as well as the sad! Don’t forget the Rainbow Girls are still collecting for their Yard Sale…DTBA…and the Mother Advisor/Deputy said she would make arrangements for anything to be picked up, if needed. The HOT weather and fires may be in our memories, but we can gather together and share our lives with each other and bring some peace and contentment through our fellow-ship and dedication. Don’t forget the Port Pals workshops and quilting classes – contact is still -J.J. Jensen 241-1413. Star love and Birthday/Anniversary hugs and wishes to those who like to celebrate - May you be the best you are!

Reading #254Redding, California

Hello family; I Hope all is well with you and your loved ones. We have had a dry, powerful, and windy

fire here in Redding, with many of our own being pushed out of their homes and away from what they hold dear. As of the date of this article, however, all appears to be well with our brothers and sisters. To our knowledge no Mason or family member has been injured. Some, however, have actually had their homes or other structures burned to the ground. It was a very moving sight to see all the Masons from many lodges pour in support of all kinds. Brothers pushed hard to get other brothers safe and to keep everyone hap-py. Brothers Scott McMillan, and Matt Larson are just a couple of our Masonic Heroes that helped out, and handed out over 24 cases of water and countless snacks to law en-forcement and fire crews. As we get more information on who needs help we will keep you updated. We have also had brothers from other lodges open up their doors to our local brothers in a time of need. Thank you to all that helped out, and continue to help in this time of need. We have had and will have Degree activity very soon. Despite the temporary Temple closure, I am pleased to say that by the time you read this, we will have conferred the 2nd Degree on Brother Chris Hall and also on Brother David Kirk. Our newest elected candidate, Mr. Justin Arendt will receive his 1st Degree on September 19th, and Brother Gary McPhetridge will be raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason on October 10th. Please come out and sup-port these Brothers on their journey.

Fidelity #131Order of the Eastern Star

Mt. Shasta, California

A Bit of History(cont. from page 1)

Sisters & Brothers: WOW and that was summer and two months dark!! Many thanks to all that attended the Official Visit of the WGM & WGP and for the great work done by all. Special thanks to everyone that helped Siskiyou Lodge with the 4th of July booth. Also thanks to Leo, John and Paula for manning the food booth at the Mt. Shasta Car Show-n-Shine. At our meeting in September 13th we will hopefullybe having a 50 year presentation. Please plan on attending. Brother Brian had his right hip replaced (not the wrong one he says) and is in rehab learning to walk again but is in great spirits. Hope to see him back in Chapter soon. Broth-er Ralph is in Medford and doing well. Do stop by or drop him a line if you have a minute. Sister Kathleen Suvia is re-locating to Redding after her retirement, and we wish her and Bill all the best. We still have one more event this summer in McCloud at the BLue’s Festival. Sisters Annemarie & Coleen will be handling all arrangements and will need your help. Hope to see everyone on the 13th.

Star Love,Anne Murphy, WM & Leo Sartor, WP

From the Editor(cont. from page 1)

were carried on floats to Red Bluff, and thence by land to Weaverville’.” Trinity Lodge has produced two Grand Masters, first, in 1885 Most Worshipful Wiley J. Tinnin, a Trin-ity County Superior Court Judge, and in 1950 another distinguished jurist, Most Worshipful Brother Charles Arthur Paulsen. Another well-known Trinity Brother was William S. Lowden who constructed a moun-tain road between Buckhorn Valley and Weaverville in 1857 that, at that time, was a marvel to engineers because he constructed it for less than $30,000 over two mountain ridges.” Other historical brothers were John C. Burch, Dr. William Ware and John Carr. Trinity and Reading Lodge each have a rich Ma-sonic history that is evidenced in the development of this beautiful part of the Great Bear State. If you have a chance to read Gold Dust and Trowels I recommend you take the time to do so as it is most informative.

For all of that 35 years, I have served as your Editor and Sally as your layout artist. It’s time to say goodbye folks, I have assumed other responsibilities in our fraternity and along with those, age has made me realize that I need to lighten the load up a bit. I have promised the Redding Masonic Association (RMA) (they govern the Trestleboard) that the transition will be seamless and smooth. Actually it already has been. Gary has printed the last year’s volume (ten issues). Now I’m handing over two more hats EDITOR & LAYOUT and the email address for submitting articles will still be [email protected]. Brother Gary McPhetridge will be on the receiving end of your articles. He will typeset and layout the magazine. For a few months, I will assist him in proofing the final draft prior to his printing & mailing it. I will continue to maintain the mailing list and handle the advertisers and donations (the last two hats) at the will and pleasure of the RMA. Your donations will still come to the PO Box as always along with sponsor dollars. Secretar-ies will still contact Circulation to make address changes and the advertisers will still send their changes to the PO Box of the Trestleboard. Sally and I have enjoyed making this a labor of love, but it’s now time to let someone else go forward. Gary will do a fine job. Once or twice in the past 35 years, we have asked him to typeset for us and his work has met the standards that we have always looked for and that you have grown to enjoy and expect.

With fraternal thanks and love,Mike Sanders (Editor)Sally Sanders (The REAL Editor)
