FOOTY IS BACK...ALIVE AND WELL!!
I hope you all had a lovely Easter break and long
weekend without football and netball (except
Heatherton and Chelsea Heights).
What a brilliant weekend of football and netball we
had prior to Easter! The weekend weather forecast
at team selection on Thursday night would have
created plenty of robust discussion on who to ‘pick’
for the imminent wet conditions. The weather we
actually had couldn’t have been more further from
that forecast with the reality being light winds, the
mercury reading low to mid 20s and sun beaming
down, warranting a light cover of zinc on the each
player’s nose.
I had the pleasure of being a special guest on
the SFL Sunday Radio Show on 88.3 Southern
FM from 10:30am to 12pm at Hurlingham Park
while waiting for the anticipated Foundation 49
Cup between East Brighton and St Pauls. I then
ventured into the East Brighton social rooms
where East Brighton Football Club hosted their
annual Foundation 49 Cup luncheon where over
80 people attended and men’s health was front of
mind and important engaging discussion was had
on the importance of regular health checkups and
healthy lifestyle. The luncheon was followed by the
mouth-watering 2013 Division 1 Grand Final replay
and it lived up to the expectation. The respect
amongst these two clubs is exemplary and both
clubs look likely to feature deep into September.
Well done to East Brighton on hosting such a
fantastic day and also to St Pauls for continuing to
support the concept.
For the fi rst time in SFL history we had football
on Good Friday and what an innovative move by
both Heatherton and Chelsea Heights. The match
was extremely well attended and what a fantastic
endorsement it was for the SFL. Well done to both
clubs in collaborating and pulling together such a
wonderful day.
This week we have a very special round with East
Malvern hosting Clayton, playing off for the John
Monash Cup. Their match is on Anzac Day in a
mark of respect to those Australian and New
Zealand Army Corps soldiers who fought and died
at Gallipoli in 1915. It is also a day of remembrance
for all soldiers who died while fi ghting for their
country. Clayton hosted the game in 2013 and now
East Malvern get their chance to host in what will
be an appropriate commemorative event.
Lest We Forget.

division 1: FRONT & CENTRE / WILL HUNTER
East Brighton avenged its 2013 Grand Final
defeat and claimed the annual Foundation 49
Cup with a hard-fought 12-point win over arch
rivals St Pauls at Hurlingham Park. Little
separated these two sides all afternoon in
what was a low-scoring contest, but a terrifi c
performance from skipper Ben Douthie
and four goals from Toby Mahoney got the
Vampires over the line. Peter Mercoulia was
the standout for the Doggies.
Cheltenham also started the new year in
style with a come-from-behind victory over
Clayton at Meade Reserve. The Clays led at
every change before a six-goal-to-one fi nal
term saw the visitors home by 23 points. Tom
Donnell starred for the Rosellas while Jesse
Henderson was solid in the ruck for Clayton.
There was no joy for Division One newcomers
Bentleigh, however, with a fi rst up loss to
St Kilda City at Peanut Farm. Although Dale
Hynes fought valiantly for the Demons, the
home side were always in control of the match
before running out 22-point winners. Tim
Sullivan was the match-winner, bagging fi ve
majors in a best-afi eld display for the Saints.
Meanwhile four goals from spearhead Dean
Francis helped Dingley to an impressive
57-point win over East Malvern at Souter Oval.
The Dingoes fl exed their muscle with a seven-
goal second term before cruising to victory
in the second half. Andrew Johnson led the
resistance for the Panthers.
The fi nal game saw Chelsea Heights record
a big win over Heatherton in their Good
Friday clash at Ross Street Reserve. The two
sides traded goals in the fi rst term before
the Heighters gained the ascendancy in the
second, booting seven of the next eight goals
after the fi rst change to blow the game open.
Although Kane Tucker fought hard for the
Tunners, a sublime performance from Michael
O’Driscoll and seven majors from Luke
Manders stretched the fi nal margin out to 54
points.
Round two this week is Community Umpire
Round, a round in which we acknowledge and
celebrate the contributions of umpires to local
football.
East Malvern v Clayton
East Malvern and Clayton kick off the round
this Friday arvo with the big ANZAC Day
blockbuster at Dunlop Reserve. With both
teams coming off a loss, you would expect
a fi red up performance. The Clays won the
corresponding fi xture last year and I’m tipping
them to get the chocolates here, too.
Chelsea Heights v East Brighton
This clash at Beazley Reserve will be the game
of the round. The Heighters looked impressive
last Friday with their physicality around
the ball while the Vampires’ strong-bodied
midfi elders are among the league’s best at
winning the contested footy. It will be a hard-
fought contest, but I reckon East Brighton will
get up in a close one.
St Pauls v St Kilda City
The reigning premiers will fi nally unfurl their
fl ag at McKinnon Reserve this week, but the
Saints will be looking to spoil the party. I
expect a solid performance from the visitors,
but the stellar form of ruckman Andy Gilbert
should see the Doggies get the points.
Bentleigh v Dingley
The Demons also get to show off their Division
Two premiership fl ag at home this week. They
were commendable in their Division One debut
two weeks ago, but the Dingoes look the goods
this season and with Francis fi ring they will be
too strong here.
Cheltenham v Heatherton
Heatherton were disappointing last Friday and
it doesn’t get any easier this week as they face
Cheltenham at Jack Barker Oval. The Rosellas
look fi nals-bound and the Tunners’ defence
will struggle to contain their key forwards,
who should kick a winning score.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Division 1: Club NotesBENTLEIGH The club’s football
season openers proved to be a mixture of
results so far as the scoreboard goes. The
day started off in terrifi c fashion with the
under 19’s having a comprehensive win over
Carrum Patterson Lakes. As the coaching
staff put it, it was not the size of the win that
was important, it was the way the players
went about their game putting into place the
structures and game style that was prac-
tised over a preseason of training sessions
and practice matches.
A new look Reserves team comprising a
number of the club’s former under 19’s and
many new recruits gave the new Reserves
coaching panel and supporters many rea-
sons to smile throughout the game against
St Kilda City. At the fi nal siren the score-
board showed a commanding Bentleigh
win. This win was particularly pleasing as
the emphasis on the Reserves this season
is to prepare players for senior football and
having on fi eld success on the way is icing
on the cake.
The seniors took on last season’s Seniors
Division 1 fi nalist, St Kilda City in what
proved to be an entertaining and hard fought
contest. Although not in front at the fi nal
siren there was a great deal for the coaching
panel to be satisfi ed with in the club’s return
to Division 1 football. The endeavour could
not be questioned against a team that was
hard at it and just a little bit more polished
with their skills when it counted. There was
a lot of upside to our performance given the
number of former under 19’s and new play-
ers in the side who are still getting to know
each other as teammates.
All in all a defi nite pass mark for the football
department in our return to division one and
our rebuilt side competing in the under 19’s.
In the second week of competition for our
three netball teams, the girls had mixed
scorebook success with a win and a couple
of losses. Congratulations to our Division 1
team who had an exciting 1 goal win over St
Kilda City whilst our Division 2 and 3 teams
toiled hard without getting the results that
they would have wanted. It is only early days
in the netball season so there is plenty of
time to turn results around and have many
enjoyable afternoons on the court.
Our Round 2 football contests will all be
against Dingley at home with a triple header.
An extremely accomplished outfi t who had
fi nals success last year will give us a good
indication of where we are out as a Division 1
club. We should all be looking forward with
confi dence re how the club will conduct itself
on the fi eld.
As part of the ANZAC round we will conduct
a minutes silence before the bounce of
the seniors game. As was the case with
last year, medals will be presented to a
player in each of our three teams who best
demonstrates the ANZAC spirit of courage,
mateship and never say die attitude in their
performance on the fi eld. The club will also
prevent medals to the opposition in each of
the games.
A very proud moment for our club will be the
unfurling of our fi rst Seniors Premiership
fl ag in the SFL.
Another proud moment will be the achieve-
ment of triple premiership player Amir,
“Banga” Banks who plays his 200th game for
the club. Amir last year’s Division 2 Reserves
leading goal scorer was for many years a
key ruckman for the seniors. A great effort
considering he is only 5’ 11” tall. Congratula-
tions from all your teammates. Enjoy the
occasion.
SOCIAL: Our fi rst function for the year will
be the “Annual Dimattinas Lunch” on Sunday
May 4th at Dimattinas Restaurant, Lygon
St Carlton. Always a great day of food and
drinks for all players, offi cials and support-
ers. Please see Robbo to make your booking
SPONSORS: The club would like to wel-
come Brighton Toyota to its group of Major
Sponsors. We encourage all members
and supporters to make Brighton Toyota
your dealer of choice when considering
purchasing a car. Remember to mention
the Bentleigh Football Netball Club .Not
only will it help you in getting a good deal it
will also help your club.
EAST MALVERN On behalf of the
Committee for 2014 I would like to welcome
you all to the upcoming season for the East
Malvern Football Club.
It’s been a busy off-season for the Panthers
with a number of new recruits joining
the Club from various leagues around
Melbourne and Victoria. The Club also
welcomes a new senior coach, Justin
Cowell, who joins the Panthers after an
already distinguished playing and coaching
career with his most recent stints being
at Foster and Meeniyan Dumbalk United
Football Clubs in South Gippsland.
The Club would like to take this opportunity
to thank Matt Carroll for a super effort
as senior coach over the past two years
which included a Division 2 fl ag in 2012 and
consolidating the Club’s position in Division
1 last season. Although Matt has stepped
down from the senior coaching position
due to increased work commitments, he
remains a crucial component in what is
shaping up to be a new and exciting East
Malvern midfi eld.
Looking back at the Round 1 results, the
Club faced its fi rst big test of the year as it
ventured down to the Dingo Den to take on a
strong Dingley outfi t which are expected to
feature prominently in the fi nals this season.
RESERVES: In a disappointing start to the
season, the Reserves suffered a heavy
defeat going down by over 100 points. The
boys showed plenty of endeavour and
intensity but Dingley simply had more
class when it counted, a clear sign that
the opposition had played signifi cantly
more football together as a unit compared
to the Panthers. Some of East Malvern’s
better players included Jason Stewart,
Tim Jansen, Ronan Fenton and new West
Australian recruit Benny Taylor. The form
of several key players including big man
Sammy Pitman and coach-full forward
Benny Padula was also a positive.
SENIORS: The Seniors also went down
against a solid Dingley side. However,
despite the defeat there were a number
of really good signs for the team which
we can build on over the next few weeks.
In particular, the brand of football we
showed in the fi rst quarter was exactly
what we expect –running and tackling and
plenty of contested footy. Unfortunately,
we weren’t able to stay on top as Dingley
gained control through the second and
third quarters, eventually running out
comfortable 57 point winners. Crimmo,
Benji and Chinga battled hard all day in the
middle. Hotto was the pick of the forwards
picking up 4 majors, Tractor the next best
with 2. Clint’s job in the ruck was one of the
highlights for the Club whilst the backline
were workmanlike with Blanks and Johno
both solid.
ANZAC DAY: A massive day for the East
Malvern Football Club on Friday 25 April
2014. The Club is excited to be hosting the
Clayton Football Club in both the Reserves
and Seniors games in what is the opening
home game for the Panthers for 2014. The
East Malvern Junior Football Club will also
be playing a game at 11.30am followed
by another game at half-time during the
Seniors fi xture. There will also be a special
Anzac Day Luncheon in the Clubrooms.
Keep an eye out for updates on www.emfc.
com.au and on Facebook.

Division 1: Club Notes
CHELTENHAM Seniors:
Clayton hasn’t traditionally been
a happy hunting ground over the
past decade so it was a relief to
escape with a good win – albeit
one that was looking shaky for
long periods. With a few miss-
ing and a few more well held,
the Clays took the game right up
to us and led at each of the fi rst
three breaks. However after a big
rev from Butts, a six goal to one
fi nal term saw us home. Bulldog
and Tommy kept us in it for three
quarters, before Matty, Bert and
Perko won it. Congrats to TJ and
Ash on their senior debuts.
Reserves: A good hard fought win
over a team that we had had some
ding-dong battle against in the
past few years in September. To-
bes, Nano and Benno led the way
along with Matty Z and each put
their hand up for a senior call up,
which is a great sign for the club.
Thirds: With 19 players just
before the bounce, the Chiefs
were slightly undermanned, but
they way they played their footy,
you would never have known. A fantastic fi rst up win, especially keeping Clayton goalless on their home turf is something to really build the year around. Nautilus Marine Under 19s: The boys came up against a larger, more mature outfi t. We were slow out of the blocks and the opposi-tion had three unanswered goals in quick time before we managed to put the brakes on. To the boys credit they listened to the coaching staff and the second half was a far more competitive game. The lads tried there hearts out and with experi-ence will make huge improvements throughout the year. Netball: The girls backed up their big win in Round 1 with another dominant effort against Bentleigh. A great team effort by all involved but as these are just grading games, maybe we should have just tanked! Nope, always good to test yourself against the best. This week: Welcome back to the newly resurfaced Jack Barker Oval for season 2014. Our fi rst home game of the season is also
our annual ANZAC Game with a
luncheon to be held in the club-
rooms prior to the senior match. A
big thank you to Bayside Council,
and all those fellow clubs, sup-
porters and local residents for
making the re-surfacing and new
light towers a reality.

EAST BRIGHTONReservesSome good signs but overall a lot of work to do but the basic fundamentals need to be applied. Not often can you give an opponent a 3 metre start and hope he makes a mistake. Overall the team needs to work harder on the track but there was not a lot to be positive about. Too often players are reactive as opposed to proactive and more initiative is required to move things our way. Admittedly we were undermanned and missed those players that ended up unavailable but that shouldn’t prevent the basic fundamentals being applied.SeniorsThe Foundation 49 Cup encounter and Grand Final Replay against the arch rival ended up a dour
defensive slog and it was going to
be a battle of the fi ttest as both
teams simply refused to yield.
Scoring was diffi cult as both
defences controlled the action.
Purists would have loved this
encounter as it was good, hard,
uncompromising, tough footy
played in the right spirit. It took
until around the 20 minute mark of
the last quarter for the Vampires
to feel somewhat safe but it was
never home and hosed. Credit to
the St.Pauls boys, they’re going
to be around the mark as usual
and much appreciation for the
club supporting the F49 concept
and the Sunday Fixture. At the
end of the day it was 4 points in
the bank and a 4-2 advantage in
the F49 Cup clashes. Great crowd
and spectacle, excellent lunch and
a great day all round. This week
we travel down to the Beazley
Reserve and take on Chelsea
Heights. Our record at this venue
has never been good so it would
be nice to chalk up another win.

Division 1: Club Notes
ST PAULSRound 1, St Pauls V East Brighton SENIORS – Sponsored by Merkon ConstructionsThe 2013 premiership rematch in pure footy terms didn’t live up to expectations with a low scoring affair seeing the Vampires hold on for a 2 goal win. Injuries to key players marred the match with Cal Cathcart and Jarryd Allan both off early leaving a depleted bench for the second half. Levi 501 was showing them How with a solid debut and his confi dence should increase on the back of his clean ball use under pressure. Junior Mercoulia was outstanding through the middle and the O dog made the most of every opportunity kicking 2 goals. In a hard fought slog the boys will still take plenty of positives away from the game.RESERVES – Sponsored by Remezzo’s Restaurant
A solid performance by a well drilled
team that proved too fi t and too polished
for East Brighton running away with a 92
point victory. Knoxy showed his obvious
class and was a stand out. He was well
supported by Dan East doing the bulk of
the ruck work and Pauly Tolongs running
hard on-ball all game. Chrissy Vail at
full back did a great job as did the ever
reliable skipper Glenny Balmforth. On the
scoreboard B Raff and Whispers Walton
got amongst them snagging 2 each.
Under 19’s Vs Highett – Sponsored by the
Bentleigh RSL
The boys did themselves proud with a 13
goal victory to open our 2014 campaign.
A brilliant 4 quarter performance by 1st
game skipper Braggers ensured the
boys stayed on top throughout. It was a
super impressive debut from the Jenkins
boys, Fred and Victor as they combined
brilliantly and linked up selfl essly all
game. Gianni Mercuri was very good
with his attack on the footy and Numbers
was tricky up forward. It was a great
performance by our elevated under 17
boys in particular Saxon in the ruck and
Harry up forward who both really slotted
in well.
Netballers
The netballers both had great wins, but
they must be still celebrating because
they didn’t submit any notes. I believe they
might have won the week before also.

ST KILDA CITY A good crowd
helped kick off the season against

the day with a mixed bag of results. A big
thumbs-up to the players and supporters
from Bentleigh for staying back for a drink

a huge test as we head to St Pauls to take
on the Doggies who will again be one of the
benchmark teams in the competition.

A solid start to the season with a good

game could have gone either way but in
the end our commitment was rewarded.

Reserves report by Blunners – Sponsored by The Inkerman Hotel A solid fi rst half saw the reserves keeping touch in a low-scoring match. DINGLEY Eight sides took the
competitive fi eld last round for a return
of 8 wins, probably some sort of record,
and one to crow about. The four netball
teams did us proud, and U19s, Thirds and
Reserves all prevailed by massive mar-
gins. In the headline act, we were pushed
early as a result of East Malvern’s com-
petitiveness, but once our noses were
in front they stayed there until the fi nal
siren. Cult hero Noodles led the way with
a typically fearless, BOG performance,
Boyle and Peet were sensational, and
you’d struggle to fi nd a more honest
footballer than Jimmy Ball. And not
since the days of Quinny have we boasted
a genuine forward target who can kick
goals and dish off assists as well. Dean
will no doubt attract attention, so caution
needs to be taken to ensure the boys up fi eld don’t focus too much on him as our only avenue to goal. “The Hill” have asked me to convey to Dean Francis that we already have one “Disco” at the club, so, in regard to his size, his number and his gait, he will now be known as and referred to as “Buddy”.As expected, the loss of Morgan has left a weakness in our ruck division, a hole Patto tried valiantly to fi ll on Saturday, but to the detriment of his undoubted valued presence in other parts of the ground. It is an Achilles’ heel that may be exposed throughout the year. Today we head to Arthur St to be welcomed by Divvy One newcomers Bentleigh, a challenge we won’t be taking lightly considering their spirited fi rst-up showing vs St Kilda City.

perspicacity to purchase a membership

Division 1: Club NotesCHELSEA HEIGHTS This week
we welcome East Brighton to Beazley
Reserve for our fi rst game on our brand
new ground. Good luck to all, in what could
be named the Puppet – Hill Cup, two very
passionate, long serving presidents of the
SFL.
General Notes
Good season opener for the fi rst function.
We had apprx 100 throughout the night, with
a good mix of new and old.
Next function is the Player auction, this will be
held after the St Paul’s Home game, Saturday
week. This year the Netballers will be included,
bring your cash and get your syndicates
organized early.
On a serious note, for our fi rst home game
all players will be wearing blue arm bands
in respect of young Justin Hulland. To
Daz, Graham & family our thoughts and
support will always be with you and your
family. Justin will be sadly missed by his
team mates, the club and his friends from
the area.
Colts Match Report
The Colts travelled to Skye Football Club
to take on a powerhouse of the competition
over the past few years. Kicking with the aid
of a breeze in the fi rst ¼ we jumped away
to a fast start with young Rhodesy leading
the way with his hard attack on the footy.
This was followed by the class of Erish up
forward and Loch Dobson in the middle.
The second ¼ saw Skye fi ght their way back
into the game, however to our boys credit
we were able to kick a couple of goals late to
keep our noses in front at ½ time.
The second half followed much as the fi rst
with our boys putting in real effort at every
contest and standing up to the physical
Challenges thrown our way by the Skye
boys. Erish, Cal Dodson and Lochie Dobson
were outstanding in the second half, with
Erish kicking a freak goal in the last plus
what would have been mark of the year
from Lochie, somehow disallowed being the
highlights.
All in all a great start for the season by
Manders and the boys.
Seconds Report
With a long list to pick form there were
some unlucky fellas who missed out on
selection in the seconds, however with
a couple of late changes in the seniors a
couple of emergencies got a late call up. The
2nds started slowly, however really hit their
straps in the second half and played a clean
good style of football.
Was great to see Noddles back from Bunyip,
looking more and more like Ben Cousins
every day, 6 of the best, could have been
double fi gures. Also, good games from the
younger guy’s, Cal Hall, Daz Hulland, Ethan
Duell, Jai in the ruck to name a few.
Senior Report
Good Friday footy for the first time saw us take
in Heatherton Football Club, the first thing to
notice for the day was the magnificent facilities
at Heatherton. The away rooms were fantastic,
no more portables, the umpires rooms were
first class and the hospitality was as usual
very good.
It was a scrappy affair, with the conditions
fairly tough, we were good enough in patches
through the day to get the result we wanted.
18 out of the 22 players representing the
Heights on the weekend were under 23 years
of age which is a huge turnaround from
previous years. No doubt we are a work in
progress and will have our good days and
not so good, however we have a good list
through the Colts and depth with the two’s to
be competitive throughout the year. We were
able to win each of quarter for the game and
we fi nished the game off in the last. There
were many sore and sorry boys after the
game.
We had solid performers throughout the
day and better players in no real order
were Micky O’Driscoll, Joel Williams,
Luke Manders (7 goals), Cal Dodson, Loch
Dobson, Josh Bennett and Jordy Peryman.
The new guys to the club in Boof Davison,
Morgs, Cal, Loch, Joel Williams, Jaggsy and
Beasa all went well in their fi rst hit out, a
couple returning for their second coming.
Netball Report
We are now entering a third side as the
numbers have grown in a few weeks. Last
grading games for the girls good luck hope
to see you back at the ground cheering on
the footballers.
Club Person of the Week
Kelly Peryman, all the work done in the
preseason with the re registration of all
the players on our list, as usual Kel well
done and thanks. Special Mention to Trev
Peryman, always solid with the umpiring
escorting for the Colts and the 2nds for
Round1.

HEATHERTON HFNC Tunner Reserves
The Heatherton reserves faced off in
round 1 against formidable opposition
and perennial Grand Finalists in Chelsea
Heights. Under the leadership of Alan
Brudar this year, the task was always
going to be a diffi cult one. An even
fi rst quarter where the Tunners had
just as much footy as the opposition.
Mark “Gomma” Gomizeil appeared to
have taken his own footy out onto the
ground as he racked up possessions and
numerous clearances. Captain Paddy
S was also getting a bit of it and a big
target up forward in Vinnie (Alphabet),
made the Tunner army look dangerous.
Unfortunately that was where it ended as
the Heighters piled on goals and eventually
blew the boys away in a polished display.
HFNC Bendigo Bank SeniorsGood Friday at Ross Street saw a big crowd venture down to see the new club rooms and a new season fi nally unfold. Both teams have multiple changes to their playing personnel. The Heighters have lost a few and the Tunners had picked a couple of youthful players. Still being led by the experienced Clint Einsedel, the Tunners were looking forward to an improved performance. Grazer looked dangerous up forward and the younger guys in Moon, Tosin and Donaldson soon found their feet. The young guys led the way around the ground and showed many others that a thorough preseason will make a huge difference to performances. The Heighters forward line looked dangerous all day and it was pure weight of numbers which eventually
saw them dominate. While it was a
good day off fi eld, on fi eld many should
be disappointed in their output. Huge
thanks to Chelsea Heights for supporting
the day. Thanks to Beany and of course
the ‘Mrs Beany’, Dale for all the work
they did to ensure a great day. Also the
committee and workers for contributing
and getting things done to the standard
that is expected. You all know who you
are. We hope the players can repay you
on fi eld in the not too distant future
instead of just another good effort.

division 2: THE INNER SANCTUM / JASON BARBIN
The 2014 season is underway and round 1 saw a few surprise results but also laid the foundation for an exciting season.
After an unbeaten 2013 season, the Doveton Eagles suffered their fi rst loss in a year when they went down to the Caulfi eld Bears by 24 points. Despite leading by 35 points at quarter time, the Eagles were outscored 13 goals to 4 the rest of the way to see their unbeaten streak end. The class of the Bears midfi eld shone and they showed that they are potentially a side to watch out for. New Bears recruit Joel Butler was among the best with 2 goals.
In recent years, Oakleigh have had the wood over Springvale in the battle of the districts but the Demons got one back after fi ghting off a late surge from Oakleigh to win by 4 points at Princess Highway Reserve. The Demons lead by 24 points at the third quarter break but a 4 goal to 1 fi nal quarter by the Oaks nearly stole them the game. Dylan Bramble was among the best for Springvale with 4 goals while ever reliable Paul Fermanis was the best for Oakleigh.
In one of the few blowouts in round 1, Murrumbeena had a resounding 59 point victory over Moorabbin at Widdop Crescent Reserve on Saturday. After spearhead Daniel Willis left the club, questions were raised about the Beena’s ability to kick a high score. Those questions were answered as the team piled on 12.26 with 10 different goalkickers. Mitch Walder led the charge with 3 goals.
In a match-up of two of the premiership favourites, the Bloods put their foot down and declared themselves early favourites for the 2014 fl ag with a comfortable 41 point victory over Highett at Turner Road Reserve. The Bloods lead from start to fi nish as their midfi eld dominated all day and new recruit James Morris having the perfect start to the season bagging 6 goals.
In a battle between two clubs destined for fi nals contention, the Skye Bombers took out a close round 1 match-up against Hampton at Carrum Downs Reserve. A close contest all day, the game was tied going into the fi nal quarter but a strong defensive effort from Skye saw them victorious by 13 points. Ben Walker was the best for Skye with 2 goals while Brendan Bennett had one of his better games as a Hammer booting 5 goals.
After the Easter Break, round 2 continues with some exciting contests ahead.
Mordialloc vs Caulfi eld
Both sides will be full of confi dence after
victories in round 1 but the Bloods look to be in
superb form as they look to win their fi rst home
game of the season. Lead by gun midfi elder Sam
Anstey and James Morris up forward, the Bloods
should be too strong at home.
Mordialloc by 35 points
Murrumbeena vs Oakleigh District
Oakleigh will be looking to get on the winners
board when they travel to the Beena in round 2.
Murrumbeena will need to rely on another team
effort in front of goal if they are going to win this
one as the Oaks midfi eld might be a little too
classy. Should be a close one.
Oakleigh by 19 points
Hampton vs Highett
These two teams once shared an Under 19’s side
but that alliance will mean nothing to either side
as they do battle in round 2. The Hammers were
somewhat impressive in their loss to Skye while
the Dogs will be looking to bounce back after a
lacklustre effort against Mordialloc. The dogs
might be too strong in the midfi eld but an upset
could be on the cards.
Hampton by 4 points
Doveton Eagles vs Moorabbin
18 months ago these two sides played off in a grand
fi nal and now the last 2 division 3 premiers take
battle in division 2. Both teams will be disappointed
with their round 1 performance and will come
out fi ghting for their fi rst victory of the season.
Potentially one of the games of the round.
Doveton Eagles by 15 points
Springvale Districts vs Skye
Another exciting match-up between the Demons
and the Bombers take place in round 2 as both
sides look for back to back victories to open
the season. Both sides will be hungry for fi nals
action this year and this looms as a game that
could potentially shape the top 5 down the
stretch. This game will be one and lost in the
midfi eld. Springvale should have a slight edge.
Springvale by 10 points

Division 2: Club NotesMURRUMBEENA ON THE FIELDThe Beena took the fi eld on Saturday wearing double black arm bands. These were in honour of two Beena stalwarts who have passed on. They are Kevin Owen and of course our sadly missed Ross Gould.Saturday was a good day for the Beena as we played two games for two wins against MoorabbinTHE SECONDSThe 2s had a good win after a rather slow start. Both of our sides may be rather small compared to other sides, but what they lack in height the make up for in speed. This was well shown in the seconds’ game where Murrumbeena ran Moorabbin off their feet after the fi rst quarter. The chief goal kickers were Chris Kirk-Williams and Shaun Thompson, both with 4 goals. The fi erce tackling of the Beena boys, exem-plifi ed by Andy Ellis bringing down the tallest opponent, rattled the Moorabbin men. Overall this was a good team win by the seconds.THE FIRSTSThe fi rst game was once again a good arm wrestle between the two sides with Murrumbeena breaking away in the second half. The fi rst quarter was a struggle with our backline holding Moorabbin to 1 goal. The second quarter was one with some wasted opportuni-
ties and a Moorabbin come back. Some inaccurate kicking left the game in the balance at half time. The third quarter was once again hard fought with the Beena starting to pull away by the end of the quarter. Tom “The Sauce” Valenta, was steady as a rock in defence, leading by example. In the fi nal quarter our speed and agility started to show out. The backline was again solid and our forward started the fi nd space. 10 separate goal kickers to kick 12 goals tells the story of the forwards. With 26 points scored, when Beena gets accurate we will really shine. Overall the fi rsts win was a good team effort, with special mentions for The Sauce, Mitch Walder (We must fi nd a way of stopping Mitch going overseas) Dean Spanos, Jackson Meredith (he is small and light but they can’t catch him) and Michael Farthing.OFF THE FIELDRoss Gould’s funeral was held at Mel-bourne High School on Sunday the 6th of April. Many people from Murrumbeena Football Club and the SFL attended. This was a witness to the high esteem that Ross was held in by the whole football community. John Coulson spoke pas-sionately about Ross and his infl uence on our club. Well done John. The Beena faithful joined together at the arena to have a few drinks and remember Ross Gould on Tuesday night the 15th of April. It was great to see so
many from the Murrumbeena commu-
nity joining us to honour the great man.
The Murrumbeena Football club Cote-
rie is back in action for another year. We
had our annual dinner on Wednesday
9th of April. The coterie was addressed
by Alan Wickes, who talked to us about
his lifelong experience in the VFL/AFL,
as well as his experience at local club
level.
This week is our fi rst home game. We
will be raising the under 19s premier-
ship pennant from last year. And once
again remembering Ross. If you have
a weird or wonderful hat, in fact if you
have any hat, wear it on Saturday as we
remember Ross Gould’s great collec-
tion of hats.

OAKLEIGH DISTRICT First of all to our reserves side, we know it was a tough day for all but with a few players coming back this week and as we all get to know each other, days like this will be few and far between. Let’s stick together, get to training, improve our skills and fi tness and just watch how we improve. Congrats to Matt Jolly clearly our bog on the dayTo our seniors, we played catch up most of the game but clearly we got better as the game went on. We think that will also be the story in the coming weeks.
The improvement will come in the next few weeks as the new guys settle in and get to know each other. Having said that, we have a big challenge this week against the always dangerous Murrumbeena, a challenge for us to meet head on. Congrats to Matt Hackett for an outstanding best on and to lucky Phill who drew him in the swindle.Well done to Pat Carroll for organising a fun night. Congrats to Teabag for getting the readies and to Scott C for one of the great early crows of all time. Massive fi ne mate!

HIGHETT Our Under 19s were
quick off the mark and going goal
for goal with St Paul’s thanks to
our fast fl owing football. Despite
some glimpses of good play, we
gradually slipped behind as the
game went on, the more we get
to know each other, the longer we
will be able to stay in the contest.
A big thank you to all the helpers
for allowing us to fi eld an Under
19’s team!
The Reserves were overpowered
by a stronger opposition but it was
great to see the youngsters play-
ing well thanks to the guidance
of our older players. It’s impor-
tant we get as many to training
as possible to help improve our
performances.
Seniors got off to a slow start &
kicked inaccurately, resulting in
an early 7 goal defi cit we were
unable to peg back. We showed
glimpses of good football and if
the hard work on the track contin-
ues the results will go our way!
Great to see a lot of past players
& offi cials as well as the diehards
down supporting the teams.
CAULFIELD What a fantastic
day last Saturday was for the
Bears!
Two hard-fought wins over last
year’s Division 3 premiers Doveton
was the perfect start to season 2014.
It was certainly a long time
between drinks for the reserves
after having gone winless through
2013. It was a pulsating contest
all day with the lead frequently
changing. Warren Davie provided
the highlight with an early
contender for goal of the year,
threading the needle from an
impossible angle in the third term.
But after a frantic fi nal few minutes
the boys held on to win by the
barest of margins. Tom Cotter, Alex
Hill and skipper Chris Todd were
the standouts.
The seniors got off to a horrifi c
start, conceding nine goals in the
fi rst term to trail by plenty at the
fi rst change. But a six-goal-to-one
second term saw the defi cit cut
back to less than a kick at the long
break.
From there it was just one-way
traffi c as the Bears overwhelmed
Doveton in the second half to run
out 24-point winners.
Colin Trigellis-Smith and Joel
Butler starred up forward with fi ve
goals between them, while Jason
Twirdy and Jake Buggy won plenty
of the footy.
The Bears’ annual Wimbledon
table-tennis tournament was
run and won on Saturday night
and it was fantastic to see such
a big turnout. Congratulations to
co-captain Tim Kennedy for taking
out the title for a third consecutive
year, defeating Johnny Eierweis in
the fi nal. Thanks to all that did a
tremendous job in helped set up
and run the night.
Let’s make sure we put in the hard
yards on the track this week and
show Mordialloc what Bears Footy
is all about.

Division 2: Club NotesHAMPTON The Seniors and
Reserves headed to the Hangar
to take on Skye which is always a
tough ask. The Reserves were blown
out of the water early and never
recovered. Finishing with only 2 goals
for the day summed up our day. Our
competitiveness at times was there
but our turnovers cost us as Skye were
more clinical when it mattered. Great
to see Josh Lewtas take the fi eld for his
fi rst game for the club and he shows
a promise for things to come. Rigga,
Johnny Margetis and Chicken battled
hard all day.
A new look Seniors team took it right
up to Skye from the start and after
fi nding themselves 20 points down
at half time managed to claw their
way back to level pegging at the fi nal
break. The last quarter was an arm
wrestle with the Hammers fi nding
themselves on the wrong side of the
ledger going down by a couple of
kicks. There were some great signs
with high expectations of what is to
come. Barney showed his class up
forward with 5 majors and Armo down
back gave us some drive with Pinko
playing his fi rst game for the club
showed some poise and class.
The Under 19s came up against a
very good unit in Dingley and were
no match for their class. To the boys
credit we never gave in with some
promising signs from some of our
newer players in Liam Timms, Pear-
son and Stephens. We re-group and
look forward to the next contest.
The Hammerbirds took on Lyndale
this weekend with a terrifi c effort
from all players. Centre position was
well controlled by Jade, with Tess cov-
ering her 2/3’s and Rachel slamming
plenty of goals but just not enough to
top Lyndale with a fi nal score of 30 –
18. Good game to watch ‘birds’!!!
Congratulations to our President Al
Riddle on his 50th birthday which we
celebrated in style over the week end.
This week we have a triple header
at the Toolbox as the seniors and
reserves take on local rival Highett
and the under 19s tackle Clayton. This
weekend will also be Past Players day
and we look forward to seeing some
old faces at the Toolbox to reminisce
about past exploits! Our girls come up
against Bentleigh 12 noon on Court 8
down at Rowans Road, Dingley.

Now, it’s HAMMER TIME!!
SKYE It was a fantastic day for round 1 at the hangar! The rain held off for the sun to shine all day. As a result, a great crowd turned up to see all four sides kick-off the 2014 season. It was great to see some of our spon-sors and club members attend our annual sponsor’s day. A big thank you to Heath and his team at the Albion Hotel in Dandenong for supplying us with the meals for the event. It is safe to say that they were enjoyed by all.The day started with the Thirds getting a win over Cerberus and un-
fortunately the under 19s going down
to Chelsea Heights. Our netballers
also managed a great win against Mt
Waverley over at the SDNA courts.
In a great moment for the club, both
Skye and Hampton reserves lined up
to see the unfurling of the 2013 Divi-
sion 2 Reserves Premiership fl ag. The
reserves then took the fi eld and came
away with an excellent win against
Hampton.
To round out the day, the crowd was
treated to a superb game of senior
footy. The game began with ANZAC
Day traditions, but then it was game
on! The score was close throughout
but a couple of late goals saw our
boys get over the line.
All in all, it was a very successful day
for our club. We’d like to take this
opportunity to thank everyone who
was involved in setting up and helping
out during the day. We cannot thank
you enough.
We are looking forward to the week
off, but are equally as keen to get back
on the track and keep rolling with the
momentum!
DOVETON EAGLES The new
season has begun and it was a disap-
pointing start with 3 losses. With lots
of new players joining the club and
new coaches at the helm we can only
get better. After a very successful
2013, senior coach Paul Davis and
reserves coaches Mick Labinski and
Wormy decided to step aside. Taking
over on the seniors is Clint (bull)
Wilson, who was a major part in last
season’s success and capped it off
with bog in the granny. He will be sure
to have the boys fi t and more than
competitive.
Shane (Cody) McGrath takes over the
reserves after playing in the premier-
ship last season. Along with Catto
coaching the thirds again we need to
all get behind them for a big season.
The club has done well to get a netball
side up and running and the girls have
started great with two wins. Melinda
Wilson is coaching and has done
an excellent job in getting the girls
together.
It will be a huge weekend for the
Eagles this week with having a past
players day and the unfurling of our
two premiership fl ags. There will also
be fun for the kids with a jumping
castle and face painting. Our new
rooms are complete and look amazing
so come down and enjoy a great day at
the Doveton Eagles.
After a near perfect season in 2013,
we have a new challenge ahead of us.
We need to continue to be disciplined
on and off the fi eld and show everyone
we belong in the higher standard.

division 3: man on the mark / Andrew Paloczi
Endeavour Hills made it two wins in a row,
allowing Hallam only three behinds in the
fi nal quarter at Barry Simon Reserve. This
was the only close result in this round of
lopsided matches. The Falcons’ winning
margin was 10 points, over a Hawks side
that has been competitive in both its
matches. Shane Peake booted three goals
for the Falcons, adding to his fi ve last week,
and Neil Peake was their best.
At home, Lyndale has kept second spot
on the ladder, comfortably accounting for
Dandenong. Like last week, the Redlegs
were close until the fi rst change and then
fell away, losing by 52 points. Brad Carroll
put through fi ve goals for the Pumas and
was named their best player.
After the excitement of an away win, South
Yarra failed to maintain its momentum at
home, despite being within a point of Black
Rock at three quarter time. The Jets took
off in the fi nal term, unleashing a nine-
goal assault, whilst the Lions managed
a miserable two behinds, with the fi nal
margin blowing out to 55 points. Tom
Dewar kicked fi ve goals for the Jets and
was named as one of their best, behind Jay
Williams.
Following a round 1 scare, Carrum
Patterson Lakes left nothing to chance
this time, jumping out of the blocks with
six goals before the fi rst change, whilst
Sandown managed one. The Lions were
never challenged and claimed a 64-point
victory. Trevor March had a day out at Roy
Dore Reserve, falling only a goal short of
double fi gures, and was not surprisingly
named their best player.
National Geographic’s website warns,
“mountain lions do not like to share their
territory and are constantly on the look
out for invaders.” Unfortunately, Ashwood
discovered what happens when invaders
visit Mt Waverley’s home ground. The
Mountain Lions had 11 goal kickers
including James Gough, who booted seven.
He was also named in their best, behind Ben
Stacey and Ben Beecroft. The Magpies were
left 115 points adrift, and the Mountain Lions
boast an astounding percentage of 515.25.
In round 3, Ashwood hosts the only team
below it on the ladder as Dandenong makes
an appearance at Essex Heights Reserve.
Both teams will be desperate to show
renewed vigour after the Easter break.
Edinburgh Reserve is the venue for what
promises to be an interesting battle
between Sandown and South Yarra. The
Cobras will be disappointed with two
uncompetitive efforts and should push the
Lions.
The good news for Hallam is that it is
playing at Hallam Reserve. Unfortunately
for the Hawks, Mt Waverley is paying a visit,
and the Mountain Lions have the chance to
achieve a hat trick after scoring 152 in each
of their fi rst two rounds.
Two undefeated teams clash at Roy Dore
Reserve and this showdown between
Carrum Patterson Lakes and Lyndale
should be an entertaining one. A win here
would give the Pumas confi dence that
they can improve substantially on last
season’s seventh place, but the Lions are a
formidable team and will be hard to stop at
home.
The much-improved Endeavour Hills travels
to McDonald Reserve to take on Black Rock.
This will be a good test for the Falcons.

Division 3: Club NotesASHWOOD Reserves – Round 2
This week saw us head to Mt.
Waverley. After a win the week
before, the boys were confi dent
of continued success. The siren
sounded and we were confronted
with fast moving players from Mt.
Waverley determined to play true to
their game plan and structures much
like we did the week before. Unable
to contain their run in the short term,
we ended the fi rst break with their 7
scoring shots to our 2. After words
from Crock we were able to slow
them down in the second quarter,
but after half time, once again, they
showed a fast running style that we
were unable to match. Jake Noble,
Nick Ignatenko, Churchy, to name a
few, showed that straight at the ball
and clean skills are so important in
any given game, and as such, we as a
group have to ensure that these skills
are enhanced. This happens with
training. Get around at training fells
and let’s start a great push towards
the end of the home and away.
Seniors – Round 2
Where does one start, looking from
the outside in, before the game is as
good a place as any. Players turning
up out of uniform in singlets, players
not prepared to follow team rules
before the game because that’s how
they have always prepared is just not
good enough. We knew it was going
to be a hard day at the offi ce & as it
turned out we weren’t wrong going
down by over a 100 points. As hard
as it might sound some players need
to understand IF YOU ALWAYS DO
WHAT YOU HAVE ALWAYS DONE YOU
WILL ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU HAVE
ALWAYS GOT. Every Ashwood player
should think about that, things must
change now otherwise it’s a long
season. However on a bright note SA
did a great job negating one of their
better player’s as did Nick Parry.
Congratulations to Fig on his 100th
game for the club. Let’s hit the track
this week & bounce back after Easter
with some welcome inclusions.
MT WAVERLEYCELLARBRATIONS SENIORS
REPORT: Another strong win, beating
our cross-town rivals Ashwood by
115pts!
The Big Joff kicked 7 leading our
forward line with all our small
forwards chipping in as well:
PattyKins 3, Bean 2, Gaz 2, Minnerz
2, CommSec 2.
A plethora of our midfi elders playing
and chiming in with a goal each:
BeezaB dominating in the ruck and
kicking 1, Ranger getting heaps of
it and kicking 1, Uncle Toby a jet on
the wing and kicking 1, Joey Dickard
racking it up and kicking 1 and Coach
Jizzle duking it everywhere and
leading by example.
#DERBYWIN
NOTTINGHILL PUB RESERVES
REPORT: Great fi rst win for the
season, defeating Ashwood by 53 pts!
Gargoyle & Cammo kicking 5
between them, The Aikworm
Bro’s racking it up in the middle,
Wadam putting in another class
performance, Pure Waters of
Tasmania Kicking 2 and running
amok, MayDay providing a strong
contest and Charolotte’s Webb
competing hard in defense!
#ASHWYN
GET WET POOLS THIRDS REPORT:
Awesome fi rst up win against long-
time rival defeating them by 148pts!
Doveton’s side included ex-2’s
Captain and 2007 Reserves League
B&F Dean Leask, but he wasn’t
enough to stop our Thirds perform a
fi rst class display.
Nangleberries was dominant in the
middle getting possessions at will,
J-Curve & Rodman combined with 12
goals between up forward, Smooth
kicked 3 and provided good run,
Irish import Gav Stone kicked 2 and
dominated at CHB and in the ruck for
his fi rst game ever of AFL footy.
Mr Burns and Jez dominated down
back, repelling many Doveton attacks
and BIRDDOG WOOF WOOF provided
clean disposal in the contested
possessions.
New kid Matty & BIRDDOG provided
some LOLz for the crowds with their
shots on the run at goal, but at least
Matty kicked 1.
Good to see the better Godders back
with a polished performance.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Division 3: Club NotesCARRUM PATTERSON LAKES
Saturday down at the Lion’s Den, was
bathed in glorious sunshine after the
week long rain, but the ground and
surrounds were in great shape for
the fi rst real footy to be played at Roy
Dore for this new season.
The Young Lions, our 19’s, had their
fi rst real hit-out and it was against
the polished
Bentleigh young guns. Our boys were
jumped at the start, slotted into gear
for the next
2 quarters but ran out of legs in the
last and ended up being beaten by a
fi tter and well drilled team. There
were some promising signs from our
lads, and with some more fi tness and
personnel to come into the side, the
season can only be an exciting one.
Our Reserves had a “battle royal”
on their hands all match, but in the
end held on bravely to a narrow lead
to be now 2 from 2. Both teams left
everything out on the park and were
spent at games end. Our Coach
Omar Ak and crew did a great job
considering the amount of players
not available, but this is also shows
the club has some real depth.
The Seniors, which were impacted
from quite a few injuries and late
withdrawals due to the dreaded
man fl u, ran out onto the park and
from the word go, looked a far more
polished outfi t than that which
played the week prior. We put in
a fantastic performance against
a gallant side to notch up a great
victory, to also leave 2 from 2. Well
done to Andrew Lucas and crew,
considering all the selection dramas!
Netball: Our girls battled hard again
but unfortunately didn’t come home
with any points. If the girls keep up
with the hard work, and all get to
know each other better and settle
into 2 teams, we won’t be far from
snatching our fi rst victories!
We would like to thank all of our
fantastic sponsors and of course all
our volunteers for all their support and
work not only on the game day, but
during the build-up and season so far.
The Club is now selling tickets to
a fantastic and our Major Social
Function for the year,
The “Bizarre Gazzard” Stage
Hypnotism Show. This is on 21st June
and will be a hilarious night, so get on
board, support the club at the same
time. Please contact the club for all
the details. Go Lions!

at Concourse Restaurant and Bar on
Saturday May 3rd, $20 per person
and include fi nger food.
The Mentone Hotel Coaches Report:
Having taken confi dence from
our round 1 performance against
Carrum Patterson Lakes, the team
knew it was vital to notch our fi rst
victory of the season, but knew our
opponent wouldn’t make it easy.
Key contributors throughout the
day were Vice Captain Jay Williams,
running a muck in the midfi eld
(2 goals) and Tommy Dewar
unstoppable up forward with 5 goals.
Young players Daniel Kick and Sam
Maitland (2 goals) continue to show
improvement and were infl uential in
the victory.
TWB Reserves Report: Disappointing
day for the boys chasing their fi rst
win in a long time. We led by a few
goals on a couple of occasions, yet let
ourselves down with poor kicking and
not playing as a team. Once again we
were able to blood a few more of the
guys who are new to the club, and we
had a number of positive contributors
across the board. Ultimately we went
down by a point and still have plenty
of improving to do.
Anytime Fitness Thirds Report: Was
a special and proud day with Black
Rock having 3 sides in the SFL for
the fi rst time ever. After half time the
game started to open up with Bobby
starting to show his dominance
around the ground. We started to
convert the effort we gave and kicked
away kicking 9 goals to 1 after half
time and run out convincing 77pt
winners.

ENDEAVOUR HILLS The
Falcons 1st eighteen go into the break
2-0 a position never seen before in its
4 year infancy. Hallam provided quite
the challenge and pushed hard all day
but the new found resolve and belief
from the falcons saw them rise to the
challenge to win by 10 points after seeing
off a 7 point deficit at 3 quarter time
break. Best players once again Mitch
Whatman, Neil Peake, Ben Swift and
Aaron Brooks. Shane Peake kicked 3
goals and Alan Mcpherson 2 goals.
The 2nd Eighteen still have a bit of work ahead of themselves but when they get going they will prove to challenge anyone, if they keep their heads in the game the results will come. Hallam took the points this time. Best players for the falcons Jarryd Burke on way back from injury, Jake Daly, Hayden Favero and Harry Denopoulos. The 3rds kicked off the fi rst ever triple header which saw them get the win by 19 points with a 7 goal last term. Setting up a buzz for the rest of the day.The club is fl ying and we urge all
supporters to get down and show their support. Thank you to all who helped out on Saturday for our fi rst 2014 home game. We need more people to put their hand up on game day for jobs, without volunteers its makes it harder to get the team on the park and be successful like we deserve to be. Thank you to Bakers Delight (Endeavour Hills), Lynbrook Hotel, Johnny Boys, Advanced Shades, First National Real Estate and Boags. We next travel down to Black Rock and look to extend to 3-0. Go Falcons.
SOUTH YARRA The Thirds
matched the Jets for intensity but were
down by four goals at quarter time. SYFC
shifted gears in the second quarter and by
combining vicious attack on the ball and
some brilliant link up play were awarded
goals from Mingos, Zach, Tyssen and 12th
hour deserter Barnes. Although the boys
showed the same endeavour in the second
half highlighted by some Bell twists, turns
and candy sales it was the fitter Jets side
that won.
The reserves had a poor start and gave the
Jets an early lead. SYFC were down at all the
breaks. SYFC had 10 different goal kickers.
Dell’orso was good under the packs. C. Dore
snapped a great goal across his shoulder.
Tidmarsh launched one from 60m. Jobe had
sticky hands and marked everything. The
reserves ended up taking home the All For
Pets doggy biscuits by one point in a thriller.
The Seniors had a ‘see-sawing’ game. Down
at quarter time by 4 points, up at half time
by 5 points and down by a point at the last
change. Gledhill tried his ‘heart out’ to take
a slips catch by diving at everything. MJ
showed his magic kickeing two. Cellini tried
to take on the entire opposition with little
success. Jets dominated the hard ball gets
and the clearances to run away with it. SYFC
are hoping for three late Easter presents
against Sandown.

under 19’s: breaking the lines / Josh SchoNAfinger
2014 certainly began with a bang in the
Under 19 competition, with fi ve teams
having convincing round one victories.
Bentleigh had no troubles dismantling
Carrum Patterson Lakes, fi nishing 97
point winners. The Demons kicked eight
goals to none in the fi rst quarter, and
Nicholas Lowrie fi nished with six for the
day.
St Pauls travelled to Turner Road to face
Highett, and the teams were locked at
three goals apiece at the fi rst change.
The Doggies however, proved to be
too strong, getting off the leash and
running away with a 12 goal victory. Carl
Herbstreit and Connor Wilson were the
best on the day for St Pauls.
In what was perhaps the closest match
of the round, Chelsea Heights held off
a determined Skye outfi t to record a
40 point victory. Skye had brought to
margin to only 21 at the fi nal break, but
outstanding performances from Erish
Uthayakumar and Lachlan Dobson
ensured that the Heighters went home
with the four points.
It was a real war of attrition at
Meade Reserve as Clayton defeated
Cheltenham by 45 points. Goals were
fl owing in the fi rst half and the Clays
took a 34 point lead into the major
change, but only two goals were kicked
in the second half, both to Clayton. The
Clays had eight separate goal kickers
and Billy Van Den Ham was best afi eld.
Finally Dingley kept Hampton goalless
for the entire day, and Warwick Nichols
kicked fi ve in a big 128 point win for the
Dingoes.
Good luck to all the teams for their
round two clashes.

UNDER 19s: ROUND 1
The Leader Shooting Star of the Week Award
returns for 2014. Each week a player from
the Under 19 competition is awarded the
“Leader Shooting Star of the Week”.
The Round 1 Leader Shooting Star Award
Nomination goes to Carl Herbstreit of the
St.Pauls Football Club.
Carl has very much hit the ground running
in season 2014. With his ability to win the
contested football and reading of the game,
Carl is always in the right position on the
ground. Carl’s contested marking and ability
to bring his teammates into the game is
valuable, and he is very dangerous in front
of goals, and will prove a headache for
opposition backlines as the season develops.
CARL HERBSTREIT

Skye and Cerberus fought out a close one, with Skye
eventually holding out as nine point victors. Only one
point separated the teams at three-quarter time, but a
great display from Matthew Chaplin ensured victory for
the Bombers.
Cheltenham had a big victory away from home as
Clayton couldn’t kick a major. 70 points was the fi nal
margin; Tim Lawson and Brenton Poole were the best
on the day for Cheltenham.
Ten individual goal-kickers for Dingley resulted
in a huge win over Dandenong at Souter Oval. The
Redlegs’ only goal came in the fi nal quarter, and the
115 point fi nal margin would have delighted Dingoes
fans.
There was another massive win at Mayfi eld Reserve;
Mount Waverley kicked 24 to Doveton’s two. Despite
displaying dominance all day, Mount Waverley never
took their foot off the gas, with eight goals in the last
quarter.
A superb fi nal quarter delivered Endeavour Hills the
perfect start to 2014, over-running Hallam by 19 points.
The Falcons trailed by 11 points at three-quarter time,
but seven last quarter goals brought home the points.
Black Rock recorded a comfortable victory over South
Yarra, however the margin could have been larger
had the Jets kicked more accurately. 14 goals and 20
behinds meant the margin was limited to 77 points.
Finally Sandown held off a fast fi nishing Moorabbin
to record their fi rst victory of the season. The Roos
kicked fi ve goals to none in the last term, but it was too
little, too late, the Cobras would hold on. Four goals to
Matthew Mccormick was a highlight for Sandown.
Best of luck to everyone for the round two match-ups.

Anzac day is the day on which we remember those who have served and sadly passed away as a result
of wars, confl icts, and peacekeeping operations. The bravery shown by all servicemen and women is
something that should never be forgotten, nor taken for granted, so while you’re enjoying your day at the
football, please take a moment to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifi ce for our country.
Lest We Forget
The East Malvern Football Club will play host to the Clayton Football club as the two clubs battle it out for

The ANZAC Day match between the East Malvern and Clayton football club pays tribute to the sacrifi ce of the
servicemen and women of Australia and celebrates the ANZAC spirit - courage, sacrifi ce, endurance and
mateship. Offi cial Anzac Day formalities will accompany the action on the fi eld.
East Malvern Junior Football Club will play matches either side of the senior and reserves games. A carvery

UMPIRE’S CORNER / the white knightThe Bricker Reserve pavilion was packed two weeks ago as SFL
Football Operations Manager Matt Duck welcomed the largest
group of umpires ever seen at a pre Round 1 meeting, with lots of
old faces and many new faces there.
We welcomed back Jon Auditore, who commenced his umpiring
career with us 20 years ago, and is currently the fi eld umpires’
coach for the SMJFL. Older umpires will remember a very cheeky
teenager, who, when he wasn’t playing practical jokes, showed
lots of potential on the fi eld. He is a little quieter these days! Jon
has umpired very successfully in the VAFA and has even umpired
fi nals in the British league (the BARFL). As well as strengthening
our senior ranks, Jon’s return will allow us to strengthen our
already strong links with the MSJFL umpiring group. Jon
encourages SFL Senior Umpires to run with junior umpires on a
Sunday to assist them in transitioning into senior football in the
next year or so. If you are interested in passing on your senior
knowledge to junior umpires please speak to Jon on Thursday
night at training
Many SMJFJ umpiring recruits, such as Luke Porter, have done
very well since joining the SFLUA. Luke began umpiring Colts
two years ago, and already a regular member of the senior
panel. However, he needs to learn that, if his umpiring partner
is 45 years older than him and has already umpired the Ressies,
tapping him through fi fteen times a quarter will not earn him a
Xmas present (don’t worry, Luke, we believe that with the Easter
break, your Round 1 partner may have recovered by now).
Another successful pathway into umpiring is transitioning from
a successful playing career, Illya Fridman has joined us this
year after a successful playing career in the VFL and SFL and
early reports are that he looks like having a long and successful
umpiring career. Ilie has a real presence on a football fi eld,
perhaps because he has followed a similar career path to our
President, Ross McNeill.
Jack Thompson is also transitioning from a playing career back
into umpiring, although he hasn’t achieved quite as many playing
milestones as Ilie. Welcome home, Jack!
Please make sure that you have registered on our appointments
package, Schedula, and that you accept your match appointment
on the Schedula website each Thursday. Failure to accept
your match appointment leads to confusion for the umpiring
department and may result in non-payment for that appointment.
You should also regularly check the Umpiring tab on the SFL
website to keep up to date with the latest umpiring news.
A reminder that the bar is open after training on Thursday nights
– grab a drink and a bite to eat while at the same time supporting
the Association. Carmel’s famous dim sims are back along with a
range of other nibblies. While on the subject of having a drink, the
White Knight encourages all umpires to stay back each Saturday
and have a drink after your match.
The White Knight passes his condolences to SFL legend (and
former SFL goal umpire) Steve Barnes on the recent passing of
his brother Graeme.
