The trailer to hunger games starts off with the main character running through a village for a few seconds, then going under what looks like a barbed wire fence and then running through a forest, already we get to see the scenery and everything looks destroyed and ruined because of this we believe that a war has gone on or a natural disaster of sorts. Also we find out that the main character Katniss doesn’t follow rules because it seems like the reason the barbed wire fence is there is to keep people out. We also get to see other people in the first two seconds in the village so we know she is not along in this world. There is non-diegetic ambient music as well as some diegetic birds chirping in the background. This goes on until 10 seconds into the trailer where we hear what seems to be a voice over of a male character. Then it cuts to the male character continuing talking but talking to the female character who was originally running. The male character, Peeta, tells Katniss that they could run away and hide but then Katniss says that they would catch them. This instantly hooks us into the movie because we don’t know who ‘they’ are or why Katniss and Peeta want to run away in the first place. After this the trailer cuts to Peeta throwing rocks and Katniss shooting them with a bow. From this one scene we can assume that there will be fighting in this movie. Then there is a quick cut to a worm’s eye view of a giant airship in the sky. After that there is a bird’s eye view of Katniss and Peeta hiding in a bush. This represents the character as either being related or romantically linked this is because they seem to want to run away together and Peeta seems to protect Katniss when the airship fly’s overhead. This part of the trailer is diegetic with the sound of the airship being the only sound heard at this part. The trailer then quickly switches to the Lionsgate logo being displayed in the movie. This is very important to the status of the movie because Lionsgate are very famous distributes of horror and thriller movies and have a very high reputation for releasing good movies. Some people would go see the movie alone knowing Lionsgate released it because they are knows for releasing high status movies. The movie then has non-diegetic slow music of what seems to be a death camp and people walking. Over the

Over the next 5 seconds of the trailer there is a bird’s eye view, establishing shot and a medium shot of different inmates showing the sheer capacity of people who seem to be trapped here. Then a diegetic woman is heard talking to the crowd through a microphone and the trailer cuts to her. She is highly done up in make-up as if she is circus ringmaster. She also seems to be dressed as if she is a mayor or is in charge of the people in the camp. This ring master then announces that one man and woman will be selected for the 74th annual Hunger Games. As she is announcing this we get close ups of Katniss, Peeta and a little girl looking worried. The trailer cuts away from everyone lined up listening to the woman to Katniss talking to the little girl who seems to be her little sister hugging and Katniss telling here that they won’t pick her. The trailer then cuts back to everyone lined up and then a close up shot of a bowl with lots of people names it in. With suspenseful non-diegetic music being played. The woman then reaches into the bowl and announces the name ‘Primrose Everdeen’ we then get a close up of her looking worried and then a quick cut to a medium shot of her walking up to the woman. Katniss then tries to fight some police and cries at the fact that her little sister has been chosen. From this the audience automatically has as emotional attachment to these characters and the use of it being announced by a character that seems to be a bad character makes us instantly hate this woman who announced the names. Katniss then volunteers to be tribute for the hunger games and the music climaxes into a big

crash and then goes back into slow suspenseful music. We then learn that the other tribute will be Peeta the man with Katniss at the beginning of the trailer. Then there is a 180 degree shot of Peeta and Katniss talking that out of 24 people only one gets out alive. Text then crashes onto the screen saying the movies is based on the bestselling book and a different toned more Arabian music is played. We then get different cuts to the main characters and a quick overview of the main city where the movie is set. We learn that this movie is set in the future and everywhere is very advanced but people still use trains. We then see Katniss getting dolled up for her time in the hunger games and different shots of her dancing with random men and then shots of her training. This is accompanied by a non-diegetic voice over of an old man who seem to know a lot of what’s going on talking about what happening in the hunger games saying they have to be prepared to fight to the death. Then three different title sequences pop up saying ‘The games’ ‘will change’ ‘everyone’ with non-diegetic suspenseful music being played. Then finally the hunger games logo crashes onto the screen and the trailer slowly fades out with the music fading out also.
