INTRODUCTION

• The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based satellite

navigation system that provides location and time information in all

weather conditions, anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an

unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites.

• The system provides critical capabilities to military, civil and

commercial users around the world. It is maintained by the United

States government and is freely accessible to anyone with a GPS

receiver.

Advantages Of GPS Technology

• Gps works in all weather so you need not to worry of the

climate.

• 100% coverage on the planet

• The GPS costs you very low.

• accuracy can be achieved in millimeters to few meters

depending on the technique that is used

• Due to its low cost, it is very easy to integrate into other

technologies like cell phone, PDA. Etc…

Advantages Of GPS Technology

• Navigate - it tells you to the direction for each turns you have

to take to reach to your destination.

• Tracking - it gives you the pinpoint location of the

Vehicle/Pets/Child having GPS Receiver or phone containing

GPS module and it also gives you the direction and speed on

which Object is moving.

• Water navigation – GPS devices are perfect for water

navigation.

LIMITATIONS OF GPS

• Requires Line of sight to sky, Doesn’t works well in-door.

• Metal & Concrete - GPS signals can penetrate plastic, fiberglass and glass. However, metal and concrete are twomaterials GPS signals cannot penetrate.

• If you are using GPS on a battery operated device, there maybe a battery drain or failure and you may need a externalpower supply which is not always possible.

• In extreme atmospheric conditions Satellite can be slow asignal.

• GPS cannot be used for Underground Positioning

PENETRATION OF GPS ENABLED PHONES IN INDIA

• The Indian mobile phone market is worth up to 8-10 million

handsets a month. Although the GPS-enabled phones'

segment is Approx. 25-30% of this at present,

• The space is already flooded many such phones, with So Many

options across Price-point of Rs.5000-50,000. Also the prices of

the phones having GPS come down sharply, which is helping

the growth of GPS-enabled phones

• Realizing the fact that this feature is the next attraction for

urban buyers Many companies had tied up with map-making

companies for providing stocked “Navigation and Find Near

Me” type Of applications.
