Vulcan Bomber LeafletJune 2008

Rock Kitchen HarrisTri-fold information leaflet

Following the Second World War, the Brit-ish Air Ministry took the decision to replace its ageing propeller-driven bomber fl eet with a new generation of aircraft. The “Future Bomber Requirements” study was presented to the nation’s aviation engineers demanding a four-engined jet bomber that could fl y higher (over 50,000 feet), faster (up to 500 knots) and further (3,000 miles) than anything they had ever built, whilst also carrying the huge British nuclear bomb.

The fi rst Vulcan was delivered to the RAF on 20th July 1956; alongside the Valiants and Victors, the Vulcan fl eet went on to become the leading component of the Britain’s Cold War strategic deterrent in the 1950’s and 60’s, the RAF’s “V-Force”.

The Vulcan unleashed its power in anger only once during its thirty-year career, during the famous ‘Black Buck’ raids on the Falkands in 1982. The Black Buck One mission was carried out by Vulcan XM607, captained by Flt Lt Martin Withers, and set a world record at the time for the longest bombing mission ever - nearly sixteen hours and 8000 miles!

The aircraft became a true British icon, yet was retired from active RAF service on 31st March 1984..

THE HISTORY OF

THE AVRO VULCANTHE

VULCAN TO THE SKYCLUB

The Vulcan to the Sky Club was registered as funding sponsor of the Vulcan Operating Company in 2000. Its members enjoy regular updates on XH558 and have a dedicated section on www.vulcantothesky.com. The Club is vital to the ongoing success of the Trust, not only by continuing to raise funds but also by providing volunteers to support hangar work, look after visitors, help with the Education Programme and go out-and-about during the airshow season.

Vulcan XH558 was the fi rst B.Mk2 to be delivered to the RAF, in June 1960. During her life in the RAF, she served as nuclear deterrent, maritime reconnaissance, air-to-air refueling tanker and fi nally from 1986 to 1992, providing awesome air displays as the RAF’s Vulcan Display Flight aircraft. Flown by Sqn Ldr David Thomas, she arrived at Brunting-thorpe Airfi eld in Leicestershire in March 1993, and starting in 1997, became the target of one of the largest and most complex aircraft restoration projects ever undertaken.

The Vulcan to the Sky Trust, a Registered Charity including the Vulcan Operating Company, was set up in 2002 to raise the funds so that the extensive engineering work needed to gain a Civil Aviation Authority Permit to Fly could go ahead.

In 2003, in recognition of the Vulcan’s his-torical importance, the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded a £2.7million grant towards the costs of its restoration; public support at an unprecedented level has brought in the same amount again, and that support continues as the aircraft moves into its second fl ying career.
