The dominant image is placed at the top of the page, with the masthead to the side so the reader doesn’t see it initially and so their attention is directed towards the image. The artists in the image are normally looking directly at the reader to encourage the reader to read the article about them. Their expression is normally invitational, seductive or comic. The image is taken at eye-level and, if there is only one person, the shot is either a mid-shot or a medium close-up so the face is still clear. If there is more one person then the shot is a medium long-shot or a mid-shot. The artists are typically wearing black or band shirts.

Instead of one dominant image, there are many sub-images arranged in a vertical line either on the right-hand side or in the centre. Most of the people in the images are looking directly at the camera, but if they’re not then they are looking to the side and playing instruments. Their expressions are either aggressive, comic, invitational or practical. The shots are usually medium-long shots or mid-shots, though if there is one person then the shot may be a medium close-up or a close-up.

In my own magazine I will have one dominant image placed at the and a few sub-images placed at the bottom of the page or at the side. The dominant image will be a mid-shot so the reader can see the model’s face and top-half clearly. Their expression will be chocolate box or invitational so as to draw the reader in and the camera angle will be at eye-level. My lighting will be natural though, which is different from the usual lighting used by magazines in their images.
