DESCRIPTION

You joined an electronics company and you were asked to redesign the layout of the remote control for a window-mounted air conditioner. The current layout is very poor and it is in Traditional Chinese. Your task is to re-design the remote control so that it is easier to use and anyone from Taiwan, Japan or the US could use the same remote control with the following design constraints: 1. You cannot remove any of the buttons 2. You cannot change the feature associated with a button 3. You cannot change the LCD 4. You can remove a LED 5. You cannot change the feature associated with a LED 6. A LED can either be on, off or flashing

Problem 1

The display features are not in the same priority. They should be re-arranged with hierarchy

Priority 1Priority 2Priority 3Priority 4

Page 3: Exercise: Redesigning a remote control

Problem 2The position of each button is too far to reach its own display features. It not easy for users to figure out the relationship between each other.

* The blocks in same colors means their functions sync to each other

Page 4: Exercise: Redesigning a remote control

Problem 3

It’s hard to reach the main function buttons for users’ fingers such as “Power on/off” button.

Problem 4

The layout is in Traditional Chinese, so it’s not easy to use for users who don’t understand Chinese.

the control remote I re-designed..

Solution 1

According to the priority of each button and its feature, re-arrange their position and size.

Priority 1: the sizes are the biggest, and the positions are the easiest for fingers to reach.

Priority 2: the sizes are smaller than red blocks, and the positions are beside them.

Priority 3: these two functions are used to adjust air, so I put them together. Their position are lower than red and yellow blocks.

Priority 4: the sizes are the smallest, and the positions are also the lowest.

Solution 2Put each button and its own display feature on the same side to let users connect them more directly.

* The blocks in same colors means their functions sync to each other

Page 9: Exercise: Redesigning a remote control

Solution 3

Move the main function buttons such as "Power on/off" to the place which is easy to reach for fingers.

Solution 4

Replace Traditional Chinese with some universal patterns of graphic icons to be the new GUI. It’s easier to let people in different countries to use the same remote control.
