WHAT MAKES A BAD CHECKLIST?

They are too long. They are hard to use. They are impractical.

They are made by people with little awareness of the situations in which they are to be deployed.

They treat the people using the tools as dumb and try to spell out every step.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD CHECKLIST?

They are precise. They are efficient. They are to the point. They do NOT try to spell everything out. They are the reminders of only the most

critical and important steps.

Above all, they are practical.

THE POWER OF CHECKLISTS

The power of checklists is limited.

They can help experts remember how to manage a complex process or complex machine.

They can make priorities clear and prompt people to function better.

HOWEVER

Checklists cannot make anyone follow them!

CHECKLIST OF CHECKLISTS

The following checklist is designed to aid the checklist creation process and ensure that your checklist helps instead of hurts.  It was created by Dr. Atul Gawande, the Brigham and Women's Hospital Center for Surgery and Public Health Dissemination Team, and Dan Boorman of Boeing.
