Introduction to Human’s Requirements
Human needs diverse requirements in his living environment; which all
of his requirements should be answered in the built environment.
Principles of Building Design Performance (BDP) are used in
architecture to organize or arrange structures and to create a successful
building or environment.
Based on research of CUFF, D. (1991), the built architectural environment is a
place that able to address
Human’s
Requirements/Motivation
Physical and Functional
Attributes
It is conducted six month preliminary study to define the proposal:
Introduction to BDP
In the past architects used to mainly focus on functionality and aesthetics.
Building design has evolved to also include ergonomic and sustainable
design principles.
Institutions teach different sets of principles regarding building
design, but all of them have the same goals in mind: (Weston, 2000)
Visually Attractive Environment-friendlyUser-friendly

Introduction to Self-Selection
There are lots of definition on
self-selection in the field of
Travel Behavior research, argued
by Cao, X., Handy, S. and
Mokhtarian, P.L. (2006) and
Bagley, M.N., and
Mokhtarian, P.L. (2002).
In this research, we argue that Self-selection may be a key for better
understanding of people’s choices that are relevant for human behavior
in building design.

of self-selection
Problem Statement
Preliminary investigation on human
values shows the absence of
assessment consideration of self-
respect in building design.
The architects of Intelligent
Building, Green Building and so on
have designed them without any
concentrating on effects of human
values as one of the important
criteria in their design.(Hakim et al.
2011)
It neglected to study self-selection as
self-respect criteria in a scientific
method in BDP assessment.
This research has focused on
Self-selection to enhance
Building Design Performance
(BDP) in consideration of human
values.
Needs In Practice
Aim & Research Question
The aim of this research is:
To assess consideration of self-selection in Building Design
Performance (BDP)
At the end of this research the question of below should be
answered:
How to assess consideration of self-selection in Building Design
Performance (BDP)?
To investigate Building Design Performance (BDP) criteria
Objectives
To investigate measurement metrics of self-selection
To evaluate correlation between self-selection with
Building Design Performance (BDP)
To establish design assessment model based on
consideration of self-selection

Scope ... Up to Now
By considering Johor Bahru in Malaysia as the research area, the
focus is on the local culture
The Scope of this study has several limitations
Any specific country has individuality of building design
Time limit will be the beginning of the 21st century
Assuming all the physical and psychological aspects are covered in
residential buildings design
Schwartz's (2005a)twelve types of universal values are:
Power, Achievement, Hedonism, Stimulation, Self-
direction, Universalism, Benevolence, Tradition, Conformity, Security, Financial
Success and Respect.
It is all to manage “Human Values” in “Building Performance Criteria”
Research Gap
Since 1980’s, the operational based future generation of buildings
introduced; IB, GB, LEB, ZEB and HPB.
Rokeach’s (1973) seven factors in values are: Immediate
gratification, Competence, Self-Constriction, Social orientation, Respect
(Social recognition, Self-respect), Inner-directed.

Building Performance Criteria includes:

Economics , Flexibility , Accessibility, Culture.

Research Gap
Consequently, there is lack of consideration of Self-respect as well as
Self-selection.
Concluding purview BPE criteria, there is lack of consideration of human
values in BDP also.
