NISHIL PATEL – A2 MEDIA STUDIES EVALUATION.

MAIN TASK: RESEARCH.

• The first piece of research I did for my main task was of Bill Nichols’ Modes theory. I created a short time-lapse of me creating a mind map showing the six modes of documentaries. To create the time-lapse, I attached my iPhone 6 to my tripod and positioned over where I drew my mind map. After completing the filming, I imported the video into Final Cut Pro X and cut the beginning and end of the video to remove the few seconds where I was setting up the video and preparing for the mind map. Next, I used Google to find a royalty free soundtrack which I then imported into the Final Cut and placed over the time-lapse. I lastly used YouTube to upload the video so I was able to post it to my Wordpress blog.

MAIN TASK: PLANNING.

• The first piece of planning I did for my main task was creating a mind map to determine what the subject our documentary would revolve around. I completed the mind map on paper, however I then used a scanner app on my phone to photo scan the mind map so I was able to upload it to my blog.

• Once we had decided we wanted our documentary to document the current refugee crisis, I used Google to find the image of the young Syrian boy that was found dead on a beach. This was one of the images that influenced us to choose the Asylum seeker topic.

MAIN TASK: PLANNING.

• The next piece of planning I completed for my main task was Test Shots. During one of our media lessons, Laura and I, went out to film some camera test shots. We used a Canon 6D camera on a tripod to film the shots. Due to bright natural lighting, we used settings of 1/200 shutter speed and an aperture of f/3.5.

• Once filmed, we imported the test shots on to Final Cut Pro X. We edited the shots together whilst thinking about how we edited them together. We then found some royalty free music from Google and imported the track over the video.

• Lastly, we uploaded the video on to YouTube so we were able to post the video on our blogs.

MAIN TASK: PLANNING.

• The next piece of planning I completed for my main task were lighting diagrams to plan for our lighting test shots. I found a website from Google which enabled me to create diagrams which would let me plan out where we would place lights when filming our test shots.

• Once we created the diagrams, Laura and I completed lighting and audio test shots. We again used a Canon 6D camera on a tripod, we also used a Rode DSLR microphone on a boom pole.

• Once we had filmed, we edited the shots on Final Cut Pro X. Where we keyed the backgrounds on the shots and improved the audio.

• Lastly, we uploaded the shots on to YouTube so we were able to post the video onto our blogs.

MAIN TASK: RESEARCH.

• The next piece of research I completed for my main task was on the narrative arc. I used Google to find information on the narrative arc and I also used sample narrative arc.

• The next piece of research I completed for my main task was a piece of textual analysis. I used Google to find a short documentary titled, ‘Rosa’. Using the previously found information, I applied the narrative arc to Rosa. I used the Brushes Redux app on my iPad to draw and create my own narrative arc. I then added text to the narrative arc so it would apply to Rosa.
