When you hear the word “heater”, you may think of the water heater in your

However, when a “process air heater” or even an “air heater” is mentioned, the

heater being discussed is an industrial air heater, used to heat process air streams

in a manufacturing facility.

In any application, direct fired heaters heat directly via a flame and

generate by-products. Indirect fired heaters implement a heat transfer

mechanism, such as a heat exchanger, and thus the process air stream does not

contain any combustion by-products.

Process air heaters are used in industries such as food, chemical,

pharmaceutical and ceramics. If the end product cannot be contaminated by the

by-products of combustion, the manufacturing process will require an indirect

fired air heater. Such industries include: chemical production, tobacco

manufacturing, food processing, grain/fiber drying, milk drying, print drying,

pharmaceutical manufacturing, ect. Industries that generally use direct fired air

heaters include: ceramics, laminated curing, printing, coating, cement production,

composite curing, fertilizer production, ect.
