Job Search Statistics

• With the economy in tough shape and with the unemployment rate exploding, the number of job related searches happening on the major search engines is exploding.

• Candidates are using a new mix of web 2.0 tools to find their next job versus simply using traditional job boards.

• The “next generation” of web users are utilizing social networks, instant messaging, SMS, and other more interactive methods to find jobs and career information.

• Companies are enhancing their online recruiting strategies to leverage these new web 2.0 technologies to decrease recruiting costs during the economic downturn.

According to Google’s keyword search tool, people searching for job related content is in the top 10 things people do on Google (even as much as sex, and more than “porn”). Interestingly enough, job seekers rarely find employers jobs directly on Google because their career sites and jobs aren’t optimized for the search engines, which hides nearly 80% of all jobs from job seekers.

What Search Engines Job Seekers Use

Jobs2Web’s network of clientsreceived over 106,000 direct career site visitorsfrom the major search engines in October of 2008who where searching for jobs online.

Google is clearly the search engine of choice for job seekers onlinefollowed by MSN/Live search and Yahoo.

Time Of Day People Do Job Searches

• Job seekers peak time of day they perform job related searches is 1PM CST (adjust for EST/PST)

• This means most people perform job searches around the lunch hour.• Search activity remains strong through the work day and into the

evening hours.

• Job seekers peak day of the week is Wednesday’s.

• However, search activity starts strong on Monday’s and is sustained through the work week, with a slight drop on Friday’s.

Key Findings:Job searches increased

over 20% for these markets in October alone.

January is typically the month when the most searches are done for jobs in all of these markets which reveals that the unemployment rate is driving significantly higher job searches within these markets.

Key Findings:Searches shot up over

20% for job titles including customer service jobs, administrative jobs, and office jobs.

Top professional job titles searched include finance jobs, attorney jobs, bank/banking jobs, technology jobs and advertising jobs.

Key Findings:Searches for student

jobs dropped over 80% in October as students returned to school, and most have found jobs.

Significant declines in searches for art, teaching, and teacher jobs was is also seen as the season for these jobs passes.

Declines in photography, internet, trucking, temporary and architecture jobs are the most noteworthy of the group with no seasonal reasons for dropping.
