Imagineering, a word coined by

Walt Disney stands for a combination of

imagination and engineering.

Imagination which is unconstrained

thought process and the one which

evolves new ideas. These new ideas

needs to be supported by knowledge.

We are where we are because of the

different choices that we have made.

Some choses made out of compulsion,

some deliberately and some because of

our luck. However, Imagineering is that

thought process which could catapult

one to a path that he had dreamt of. As

quoted by Einstein “Imagination is more

important than knowledge. For

knowledge is limited to all we now know

and understand, while imagination

embraces the entire world, and all there

ever will be to know and understand.”

Imagination is that which has led to

many wonderful inventions in the

world. Inventions like the pace maker

which keeps people with heart ailment

going or be it breakthrough

technologies like the stem cells. All of

which could not have been possible

without Imagination. However just

imagination does not suffice for ideas to

become reality. Imagination needs to be

backed by knowledge. Knowledge is

that which brings the fruit fallen out of

imagination to reality.

We have learned to put together our

skills, knowledge and capabilities in our

approach towards life. Being equipped

with knowledge and the burden of

responsibilities, shatters one’s ability to

imagine and come out with new ideas.

However one should realize the

immense happiness that he gets when

he follows his dream. This opportunity

could be yielded by Imagineering which

could help one fire his thoughts, achieve

his goals and live his dream. We have

got one life and it is up to us to choose

how to take it forward.

How do we go for Imagineering?

Imagineering could be performed by

following three steps. Creating an idea

which is the process of imagination.

Which is then followed by preparation.

Then one should enlist support.

Ideas could be generated by various

methods. Ideas could be generated in

the process of speaking to colleagues,

friends or may be just an outcome of

continuous thought process which is

result of knowledge we possess. A good

example to this is the creation of a

computer and the coding which

challenges human brain in its

capabilities of playing chess. The

machine is capable of processing 1.8

billion moves and also is anticipate the

strategy of its opponent. Another good

example is Leonardo’s projections of

technologies related to air and

underwater travel that have become

reality only in the 21 century.

The next step would be to prepare

the idea. The various steps involved in

the preparation are validation of the

idea, brainstorming and then

performing primary and secondary

research. An example of the next

generation technology is the bionic arm.

A technology that lets machine to read

the control signals and activating

the robotic arm accordingly.

Finally in order to be persistent

in his efforts he needs to enlist

support from the people

around. This would ensure he

does not become tired of

failure and backs out. One

should also look for mentors

who could encourage him

and keep him on his toes.

It’s always good to consult

when proceeding with a

plan.

There are an array of opportunities

for Imagineering. Be it in creating a

shuttle to Mars, or the topic of science

fiction - telepathy or in creation of next

generation flying cars, there is a lot of

ideas for new generation to explore.

However the new generation should

come out of the clutches of knowledge

and responsibilities in order to

successfully come up and implement

these new ideas.

Student Feedback:

The session was easy to

comprehend and gave us a

lot insight on how

Imagineering could make our

make our dreams come true

The session evoked the

thought in us that we should

do something new which

would bring the change in

our life

Very thought provoking

session. Life is a long way to

go and the session showed

us how important is it to

imagineer at this age to live

our dreams for the rest of

our life
