The 10 most common timewasters from Employers, Recruiters and Jobseekers
and how to avoid them
Don’t complain, don’t drag your heels and don’t treat your counterpart poorly because you are working on a bad deal. Don’t waste anyone’s time because you have failed to negotiate properly. Stop accepting bad deals – get organised – or walk away
from the deal. There are tonnes of better deals out there.
Be clear about your seeking goals
Be clear about your seeking goals Keep it simple, reduce it to the max and stop wasting time with fluffy jargon and copy and
paste lingo. Job ads and selection criteria should be genuine.
The same applies to resumes. Nobody minds a bit of marketing and it’s normal that you are proud of your achievements, but don’t waste people’s time seeking a Mercedes when
it’s obvious that you are specialised in Volkswagen. Get the drift?...
I know it’s an old one but it’s so true. Everyone wants the most efficient pricing in the industry but there is a difference between trying to keep costs low and paying peanuts.
It goes back to what I said in No. 1. So don’t hire recruiters or candidates for peanuts because you will get rookies and don’t accept clients for peanuts
because you’ll get monkey business.

Employment is about real people. If your only driver is money, then don’t complain if the job you accepted is too hard, the client is too demanding or the
recruiter too focused on the ‘Midas’ touch.
You are going to burn out sooner or later and all the money in the world won’t give you back the time you wasted.
Whether you’re a recruiter, hiring manager or job seeker, good communication is the part that allows everyone to make the right decisions.
If you use a CMS and ATS, surely you can kick-start the communication module and provide your clients and jobseekers with decent and updated feedback. Automated emails are lame but better than nothing and no feedback is unacceptable.
If, on the other hand, you are a job seeker then practice acceptable, professional communication both on the phone and in writing and don’t resort to stalking to vent your frustrations.
Employment is not the right place for gambling
Why take a gamble on a client, recruiter, employer or a candidate? There is a fine line between holding your cards close to your chest and gambling with the future of a company or a candidate. If you can’t make a decision because the cards in your hand are bad, leave the game and start over. Note that I’m not talking about taking calculated, reasonable risks such as giving a good candidate a shot despite them not ticking all the boxes in your dream list of qualifications or trying an alternative method of recruiting that really seems to make sense.
Employment is not the right place for gambling
Treat everyone like a customer
Treat everyone like a customer Everyone is somebody’s customer in the game of employment so why not apply some customer service, clear marketing and reasonable pricing or pay.
Don’t lure with unrealistic promises or OTE figures.
It really doesn’t matter what industry you’re in. I am sure you know how expensive it is to find a new customer, so why not invest in a bit of service. It doesn’t take much. See also point 5 and 8.
Hire fast – fire or quit faster
Hire fast – fire or quit faster
No one is interested in buying a complicated story. It’s painful to deal with complicated slow processes and most recruiters and candidates move on if they encounter tire kickers, unless they are desperate. If your most recent hire turns out to be a bad deal, fire fast,
don’t waste your precious time and money. Similarly, if you find that you’ve entered into an unworkable situation, think about finding something else and quitting fast rather than wasting time doing something you really don’t want to do.
It’s all about people
not commodities
It’s all about people
not commodities
If you organise your business like a commodity trader then don’t be surprised if all you get is off the line, out of the box, flat pack results.
If you want real people, delivering real results, treat them like real people not like commodities. It doesn’t matter which side of the table you’re on, engage, communicate and spice it up with a bit of human touch and customer service and your chances of securing a good deal increase immensely.
What we really want is Matchmaking
The name of the game is recruiting but what most of us really want is matchmaking. If that sounds too involved and personal for you than it’s probably better if you just continue to waste your time. Just pick a client or get yourself a low cost rookie recruiter and if you are a candidate just grab the next best job, but don’t complain or finger point if it turns out to be a bad deal and you wasted lots of time.
